ObamaCare whip count(s): Pelosi in trouble?
posted at 4:10 pm on March 17, 2010 by Allahpundit
I’ve got a not-so-crazy hunch that the undecideds are simply waiting for their “deficit reduction” fig leaf from CBO to tumble towards yes, so let’s play pretend optimists while we can. Four whip counts for you to choose from:
1. WaPo sees 149 leaning yes, 205 leaning no, and fully 77 Democrats technically undecided. That’s an absurd number — surely Pelosi’s in the ballpark of 200 private commitments — but it does show you how reluctant House Dems are to embrace this thing until the last possible moment.
2. The Hill has 50 undecideds and 36 Democrats leaning no, which puts opponents within two of killing it. How firm are those no’s, though? Included among the leaners is Luis Gutierrez, who’s talking tough about walking away over amnesty but whom everyone but everyone expects will cave by Saturday. Even so, if their numbers are right and undecideds all vote the same way they did in November, Jeffrey Anderson calculates a final tally of … 207-224.
3. Gabriel Malor, more realistically, claims the true number of undecideds is 26, 16 of whom voted no last time and 10 of whom voted yes. Per his calculation Pelosi needs 24 of them, which puts him in line with The Hill’s shaky assessment that opponents could be as close as two votes away.
4. The lefties at Firedoglake think the real count, including leaners, stands dead even at 208-208 with O-Care in the hands of 15 centrist Democrats. Behold:
Lincoln Davis, Jim Matheson, Harry Teague, Travis Childers, John Barrow, Zack Space, Chris Carney, Brad Ellsworth, Jerry Costello, Henry Cuellar, Nick Rahall, Solomon Ortiz, Earl Pomeroy, Bill Foster, Harry Mitchell.
That’s quite a conservative group, all on the right side of the caucus. I don’t think Kucinich’s announcement really sways any of them; Kirkpatrick, a freshman from a swing district, would actually do more. And as I’ve said repeatedly, it’s the Stupak bloc, or members from it who split off, who will ultimately be in the position to decide this thing.
If they’re right, the actual tally is now 208-209 since Jerry Costello reaffirmed his no vote just within the past few hours. Jim Oberstar, who used to be part of Stupak’s bloc, defected to become a yes within the past few hours too but that was expected and reflected in all of the preceding numbers.
So there you have it. The CBO numbers should be out by tonight and the dominoes falling by tomorrow morning, leading to a heart-achey day indeed at the ol’ Hot Air homestead. Anything the GOP can do in a last-ditch bid to sway some fencesitters, aside from reminding them that the dopey polls warning of liberal anger if this thing fails don’t really apply in swing districts? Well, here’s video of Pence from this morning halfheartedly trying to assure Democrats that this isn’t a now-or-never vote and that bipartisan reform is on tap if they torpedo the Senate bill. I’ve been after the GOP leadership all week to issue make some sort of formal pledge in that regard, but I guess this’ll have to do. Forward the clip to a wavering Blue Dog of your choice.

Got this off another post. Don’t know if it is true:
Congressman Joe Barton(R) just wrote on his Facebook page that the CBO scored the house fix OVER $1 trillion.
“health care issue is still up in the air…..the Congressional budget office score has come in at over 1 trillion $..yes …..1 trillion……if the bill is not posted by 6 pm today< we cant vote on it saturday…stay tunedabout" an hour ago

I so want to see this worthless, waste of skin Pelosi try to smile and spin away a crushing defeat on this bill.
That the Democrats wasted more than a year on this idiocy and that it failed miserably, would just be so tasty.
Victory is almost at hand.

Rep. Jason Altmire is going to be on Hannity tonight!!!
Did anyone hear his interview with Sean yesterday on the radio? It was clear that Altmire doesn’t want to vote for the bill. I wish Hannity would have badgered him less. He wanted to admit the process has been corrupt, etc. That’s putting him on the spot too much. All we need is a NO from him, not a confession.
Oink on March 17, 2010 at 4:22 PM
Take it or leave it, and it’s not exactly a revelation. But one of my friends on the Hill (low or mid-level) emailed that CBO was over $1 trillion. Which is what Barton said, too.

I’m a bit confused as to these whip counts. What are they counts for? What is the CBO doing the scoring for? Does anyone know what might be voted on? The Slaughter coup d’etat? The Senate bill? The reconciliation package coup d’etat for a non-existent law?
neurosculptor on March 17, 2010 at 4:24 PM
OK so let’s say CBO says it’s a no-go for reconciliation. So what? What makes you think Harry will abide by that rule? Shit, he’s pretty much said rules be damned, what’s another rule to break in the quest to enslave us?

A couple of things:
1) The Precedent’s illegal campaign funding (allowing anonymous donations from anywhere) was orders of magnitude worse than Watergate.
2) Nixon resigned to save the nation the turmoil. The Indonesian Imbecile wants to destroy this nation, so any thought of him resigning should be put to rest. And Congress would never impeach the traitor. They just don’t have the brains or the courage – and I’m talking about a coming GOP controlled House and Senate. The current Dem junta, of course, would never impeach The Precedent. They are complicit with him.

Arrgh. Don’t promise Democrats a bipartisan anything. Promise the people to kill this abomination and let the People pressure the Democrats.
And no, it’s not worth it to kill this bill. You gotta orient your tactics to the strategic goal– killing this bill in all its forms. Bear in mind that they can vote again and again and again on a shell before they’re turned out next year.
Chris_Balsz on March 17, 2010 at 4:35 PM
Zero just turned on the water for the Calif farmers to get 2 more yes votes. He has crushed more lives, jobs and dreams in his 1st year, what has he got up his sleeve for the next 3. Um, that would be cap & tax, amnesty and taking our 401K’s away.
Kissmygrits on March 17, 2010 at 4:36 PM
Is that what the CBO is supposed to be scoring, even though the exact Senate bill is what must become law, first? I can’t see how the CBO is even allowed to score reconciliation for a non-existent law.

Call your Congressional Representatives!
Call them now, and use their local numbers. Tell everyone you know to call them now! This is a fight for the soul and future of the United States of America; for the country we all love, and have inherited and preserved out of the blood and treasure of our forefathers.
Will the American citizens stand and fight as our great Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Guardsmen, and United States Marines, past and present, always stand and fight for our sacred liberty? This is a seminole moment in American history. We will live as one nation under God, or under government? Now is the time of decision! You must act now! Now is the time to let your voices be heard as never before. Where is the march on Washington? Where is the American spirit that never quits? Where is the American spirit that says “no” and “never again” to our enemies, and backs it up at all costs? Our soldiers are willing to die for this country’s preservation. Shall we not stand up on their behalf while they face bullets and bombs so we do not have to?
If you called already, call them again! If you have e-mailed them, do it again. If you have told your relatives, friends, neighbors, and co-workers, tell them to call and email, and fax them again! Stop what you’re doing and do it now! Our great republic is at stake!
Think of your children; and do it for them. Look into their faces; and then pick-up the phone and get on your computer, and let them know, we are still Americans, and we will not accept tyranny from anyone – foreign or domestic. We will never surrender to state control of our lives. Tell them that when you call and email them. Tell them we are not socialists, and we will not live under it now or ever. Tell them like Churchill “We will fight them in the air; on the land; and on the seas. We will never surrender.” Tell them like John Paul Jones, “We have not yet begun to fight.” Call them now! E-mail them now! Fax them now! Let them feel the people’s power. Do it now!
