Obama: “The Louisiana Purchase would cover an earthquake in Hawaii”?

posted at 10:20 pm on March 17, 2010 by Cassy Fiano

This moment, from Bret Baier’s interview on Fox News with Obama, might just be one of the biggest “WTF?!” moments from Obama’s presidency yet. Obama is either completely making things up, living in an alternate reality, or really, really confused.

Actually, my guess is that’s it’s probably a combination of all three.

Apparently, there was a devastating earthquake in Hawaii that we all somehow missed.

Oh, wait, no. That’s right. There was no earthquake, and Obama is just totally clueless, as usual. In fact, the last earthquake in Hawaii to cause any deaths at all was in 1975, and two people died.

In any case, why is he using this argument, anyways? He’s turned this health care bill into a one-size-fits-all solution for everything. Not only will it fix our health care, but it will apparently create jobs and give disaster relief around the country!

Maybe I’m the only person who doesn’t get it, but I just don’t see how disaster relief has anything to do with health care. This is just more evidence that Obama is just talking out of his you-know-where now. He’s become this desperate. And you know, I say good. That means we’re getting to him, and now’s the time to push even harder.

And, Obama? Just a tip. Someone that you supposedly look up to once gave some pretty good advice, someone named Abraham Lincoln. Read this quote. Memorize it. Repeat it to yourself before you ever choose to open your mouth ever again.

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.

Update (AP): Tapper noticed this earlier too. My guess is Obama meant to say that Hawaii went through a tsunami caused by the quake in Chile and got distracted in his irritation at Baier. But who knows what goes on in his mind at this point? This is a guy who thinks universal health care is going to reduce the deficit.

No but neither do I offer baseless speculation as facts.

Bradky on March 17, 2010 at 11:07 PM

“Baseless”?? Watch the friggin video above, again. And then I have a thousand other videos of him saying equally moronic things. His stupidity is BASED on the clear evidence available to all. I don’t need to really see his SATs to know that he scored around a 400 on his math section. Just listen to him. I mean, come on. The guy obviously can’t handle fractions, and he gives a good amount of evidence that he’s a disaster at mathematical word problems, too.

You are obviously hung up on color of a person’s skin. Wow. I don’t follow the news in NO. Could care less about the city really. Got enough problems in the city where I live…and the leadership isn’t black (since you are so hung up on color). Glad Nagin was out…he had poor leadership. Nagin had one play in his playbook: whine.

I believe BO would be first to say he got the earthquake in HI all wrong. The real point here is that when the president gets flustered he says crazy off the cuff stuff. Does that exhibit strong, calm, confident leadership? Imagine him sitting across from Putin. That’s enough to keep you awake at night.

Bradky on March 17, 2010 at 11:11 PM

So, have you named another city still a disaster after 6 years? San Fran. 1906.

# shack-type cottages were built six months after to replace tents in the refugee camps at the Presidio, Fort Point, Golden Gate Park, and elsewhere.
# relief cottages were available to earthquake refugees who were:
# first, permanent camp residents
# second, in tents and makeshift buildings
# third, in cellars or staying with friends and
# last, San Franciscans forced to live outside the city.

jbh45 on March 17, 2010 at 11:01 PM

One black mayor’s comments cannot be pasted onto every black citizen of NO, nor can the comments and actions of some people seen in television coverage. And perhaps you didn’t see it in the news but Nagin lost the election to Mitch Landrieu, a white guy, in a majority black city.
Like I said one person’s utterings don’t represent an entire population any more than Robert Byrd’s actions represent your beliefs.

BobMbx on March 17, 2010 at 11:10 PM

Yes, but it will be based on some premise like FEMA can’t have a huge presence on the island so they need the money to take care of their own emergencies which we can predict will become more frequent because of global warming and the rising seas and more frequent earthquakes based on recent activity in the Pacific basin and how that will mean more tsunami threats for Hawaii. Maybe.

Buddahpundit on March 17, 2010 at 11:19 PM

Come on Bradky… You must have all sorts of examples of one-time disasters that lasted 6 years… Other than the 4 year disaster of Barry, and 6 year disasters of Pelosi and, Reid.

TTheoLogan on March 17, 2010 at 11:16 PM

Louisiana was pretty much “The State that Time Forgot” — or, more to the point, the state that hadn’t realized what had happened with the national Democratic Patry until after Katrina, since it was typically the most solid Democratic state over the past quarter-century while the rest of the south was shifting to Red.

The voters woke up to the fact that the Long family was no longer running Louisiana in the wake of Gov. Blanco’s foul-ups, and treated her accordingly by electing Jindal, something the big media likes to avoid mentioning when they attempt to put all the blame on Bush.

GWB’s biggest fault, along with Brown and others in the administration who came from Texas, was that there’s no way you could grow up in the state and then become governor and not know what a dysfunctional basket case Louisana was going to be in a disaster with that group of politicians in charge. Even though the Democrats would have howled about it being a fascist takeover by Chimpy McBusHitler, he really should have pulled an Ike and nationalized the Guard units to handle evacuation and relief efforts when Blanco refused to do so.

jbh45 on March 17, 2010 at 11:20 PM

The Louisiana purchase didn’t obtain the funds for Katrina damage.

Mrs. Landrieu’s big payday shows how useless the Congressional Budget Office’s cost estimates are. Right now, each dollar that Louisiana’s Medicaid program spends is matched by $1 in federal funds. If Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s bill passes, each $1 Louisiana spends will be matched by $4 in federal funds. The CBO, falling back on its typical static analysis, assumes that both population coverage and Medicaid payments per beneficiary will remain unchanged. Neither assumption is reasonable.

Before breaking out your etch a sketch to draw a picture that you don’t understand I’d recommend a little more reading into the issue.

BobMbx on March 17, 2010 at 11:33 PM

Actually, the entire fiasco in NO was to me a testament to what happens when you have communities of people, white, black or brown, who have lived on entitlements for years. When disaster struck, they lacked the individualism and “pull up your bootstraps” mentality that make folks help themselves first, then their neighbors, the way I saw the people of Mississippi doing. When your first thought is to look to the government to do everything for you, the disaster that is still NO is the result.

Is your reading comprehension that bad. Landrieu didn’t obtain the money for NO or Katrina related things. I paid tax dollars to pay for the idiots in Florida and gulf coast areas who insist on rebuilding year after year. yes they pay high insurance premiums but at the end of the day the feds always chip in.

Bradky on March 17, 2010 at 11:39 PM

Now I’m confused.

Doesn’t the Constitution (I know but stay with me here) say that BOTH houses must pass the SAME bill for it to be sent to the President? What is he talking about that this part’s in and that part’s out business? This should be left in but not that? You can’t do that to the Senate bill and it still be the Senate bill… in which case, they are not voting for the same bill, or even “deeming” the same bill.

Or is this stuff what they are supposedly “fixing” in the “reconciliation” bill? And doesn’t that go through the Senate, NOT the House?

And has anyone else noticed that ALL taxation bills are supposed to be started in the House, but this monstrosity was started in the Senate and then sent to the House?

They have stepped on and tramped so many laws, precedents, and Constitutional provisions that anyone who votes for this thing (either directly or through the “Slaughter” rule) is a traitor and should be tried for treason!

Jeff2161 on March 17, 2010 at 11:31 PM

The masses who support the social ideology of liberals need to study the fate of similar groups in states where the socialists took over.

The sick, lame, lazy, un-productive, and the disabled, among others, always get killed first. Why? Because they don’t contribute to the collective. They only consume resources and wealth produced by the healthy, ambitious and able.

If you consider yourself a liberal supporter because of some special class (minority, disabled, etc..), everytime you vote for a liberal, you’re only hastening the purge. Its the bitter-clingers who are the prized members of capitalists and communists.

oldoldbabs on March 17, 2010 at 11:34 PM

You hit it right on. My 20 something godson went to New Orleans to help. He was busting his hump shoveling debris in the Sept. heat. There was a NO resident (about 30) sitting on the stoop and whining and complaining that the government wasn’t doing enough to help. He never picked up a shovel, offered a glass of lemonade or helped clean up in any way, just sat and whined.

We were vacationing in Mobile when Katrina hit (we flew into NO and drove to AL) Because NO was closed we had to drive to Birmingham to catch our flight home. We met a family from NO and when we left, I gave them some kids clothes, toiletries and food… the response I got? “gee do you have anything else??”

In AL there was a lot of devasation in Bayou La Batre but you never heard about it on the news… a lot of the people rolled up their sleeves and got to work. Same with MS.

Good examples. I always wonder why the news anchors didn’t make it to the communities in Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri after the flooding along the Mississippi river in 2009 (I think it was 2009). There were literally 1000’s of families left homeless. No self pity, no whining. They just got dirty, pitched in, and cleaned up.

jbh45 on March 17, 2010 at 11:51 PM

II don’t remember Obama trotting around in his waders either do you?

kringeesmom on March 17, 2010 at 11:54 PM

There was that ice storm in Kentucky too, no one from the MSM covered it so, it did not happen.

Jeff2161 on March 17, 2010 at 11:56 PM

Well he is white as well so looks like your side of the tree as well bubba

Bradky on March 17, 2010 at 10:32 PM

What’s up, dude? Fun to see one of the old-timers; all the rest are gone or rendered mute by the noise here.

(As for O’Bozo being white – sshhh! It’s a secret, you know…)

kringeesmom on March 17, 2010 at 11:54 PM

Nope. He didn’t make it. Its okay though because the US flag was flying high and he seems to be ashamed by a show of patriotism.

jbh45 on March 17, 2010 at 11:56 PM

Bradky on March 17, 2010 at 10:32 PM

PS You still have that special way of bringing out the nuttiness. I don’t know of these two guys, but they seem to like you. A lot.

Jaibones on March 17, 2010 at 11:57 PM

Perhaps Obama’s remembering the earthquake-caused tsunami of 1946. 159 people killed in Hilo. But more likely he’s just been watching Mega-Quakes! on the “Science Channel”.

Ralph64 on March 17, 2010 at 11:59 PM

How did he get through Harvard mis-pronouncing “Corps”?

BobMbx on March 17, 2010 at 11:13 PM

A. Why on earth would anyone at Harvard know how to pronounce “corps”?!

2. The smart Jewish kids in the law school were so pissed that someone decided to elect Barry the Nothing as Law Review Editor that they played a prank on him and pronounced it “corpse” all year. It worked.

Jaibones on March 18, 2010 at 12:02 AM

Obama’s latest stratagem seems to be to keep us all in a state of confusion trying to figure out whether he is a psychopath or a moron.

MB4 on March 18, 2010 at 12:03 AM

As for you guys trying to figure out what Barry was blathering about, give it up. He wasn’t talking about anything. He was just talking. People tell him he sounds smart when he talks.

Bradky, if you read Section 2 of Presidential Executive Order 13489, signed on January 19th, 2009, and entitled Presidential Records, it basically states that only the records Obama chooses to be made public will be released. With all the financial turmoil surrounding him at this early stage in his Presidency, and with all the unrest in the rest of the world, don’t you find it odd that this was one of the first of his priorities when assuming the presidency?

He is such a small man. Did he even get out of the second grade?

Bret started by quoting letters that asked “If the bill is so great why do you have to bribe people to vite for it?”

Obama didn’t answer he just said something like “Well I get a lot of letters too, so there, stupid head!”

Obama: “The Louisiana Purchase would cover an earthquake in Hawaii Haiti”

.
Let’s see: we’ve got a big disaster relief presence there … both are islands, both start with an ‘H’, folowed by an ‘a’, then followed by a letter waaaay down the alphabet … no teleprompter …
.
… it’s an honest mistake; anyone could make it.
.
Except that Haiti isn’t one of the 50 US states or one of the 57 Heinz varieties.
.
Mercifully, this was said on national TV. No question that the quote was not made up.

28 Amendment

Congress shall make no appropriations for a fiscal year exceeding ten percent of the gross domestic product.

29 Amendment

Congress shall pass no laws compelling states to raise revenues for compliance therewith.

Constitutional Convention. Call your state representative.

It is becoming very clear why Dennis deduced that Obama knew a lot more about alien abductions than he was willing to let on.

MB4 on March 18, 2010 at 12:34 AM

Speaking of color/race, on your census, item #9, make sure to fill in: human, Daytona 500, “yes, I like to race”, U.S. American, or some such. You don’t have to answer anything other than how many are in the household.

Schadenfreude on March 17, 2010 at 11:51 PM

I just got the form, but decided I’m not even going to fill it out. As a libertarian and Jeffersonian democrat I just don’t seem to exist as far as my representatives are concerned so why add to the weight of the PRK’s delegation?

Fighton03 on March 18, 2010 at 12:37 AM

Shades of the 10,000 dead from tornado in Kansas line from 2007: Which is whackier, the original “Hawaii” quote, ot the new and improved “Haiti” version? Any chance that “universal health care” really means “universal health care”?

Arbalest on March 18, 2010 at 12:38 AM

andy85719 on March 18, 2010 at 12:34 AM

Amendment 30: All bills of appropriation for a period greater than 2 yrs must pass with a 2/3rd majority of BOTH houses.

Fighton03 on March 18, 2010 at 12:39 AM

I can explain all this. First, Haiti is one of the 57 states, and we all know about the devastating quake there. Second, MS was directly hit by Katrina while LA only took a glancing blow. The LA Purchase is about appeasing a certain Landrieu senator and nothing more; the wording of that section of the HC bill is such that LA is the only state to possibly qualify. So it is a bribe and Teh Won is lying flat out about this.

Hope I cleared things up.

GnuBreed on March 18, 2010 at 12:40 AM

andy85719 :
.
Add the 30th Amendment, specifying that US Representatives and Senators may be recalled by popular vote of their constituencies.
.
There’s some question about this; let’s settle the question now, before we need to worry about the answer for real.

Arbalest on March 18, 2010 at 12:43 AM

When are you Americans going to realize that when the media keeps saying how smart Obama is and what a great orator he is, it is all bullcrap.
He is a dumb, smooth talking dolt who exceeded his abilities… what was that called, the Peter Principle? ever read that book? well, you got one of them in your President.
Why do you think he has Pelosi and Reid leading the charge? Because he can’t… all he knows is the low grade scrapping from Chicago, where he was coached and guided by much smarter and sleazier minds… now you have a dolt in the White House and you are living with the disaster that is Obama.
As Sarah Palin said today…. you stupid Americans voted for him and you got him…. so live with your stupidity.

PhilipJames on March 18, 2010 at 12:44 AM

Update (AP): Tapper noticed this earlier too. My guess is Obama meant to say that Hawaii went through a tsunami caused by the quake in Chile and got distracted in his irritation at Baier.
A mistake, which, had Bush made it, the left would drag out the chimp jokes and Rachel Maddow would get to smirk about while her tens of viewers high fived.

Doncha just love the “tone” of the census ads for which we are footing the bill?

“Be sure to tell the truth so you can get your Santa Claus this year” is about the sum of it. Which is more or less saying to the people, the more you give us to count, the more we can give to you. Of course they neglect to tell the good people that it’s their own shit that they’re redistributing. As always.

hillbillyjim on March 18, 2010 at 12:46 AM

“I just don’t see how disaster relief has anything to do with health care.”

Same way a takeover of the student industry is a part of health care.
