Oh my: Dems ask Obama to delay trip for O-Care again
posted at 4:30 pm on March 16, 2010 by Allahpundit
The spin here is that he’s been so goshdarned effective in twisting arms that they simply can’t bear to be without him. Which is another way of saying (a) they don’t have the votes, (b) they’re seriously afraid they can’t get the votes, and (c) they’re so low on sticks and carrots that they need to leverage the persuasive power of a guy who’s 0 for 3 in his last three times out on the stump. Never mind this Telegraph story: At this point, if The One wants to terrify Democratic fencesitters into voting yes, the threat should be that he will campaign for them, not that he won’t.
The White House has been bringing its A game in a final push to get health care passed — and some House Democrats are so pleased with the shift they want President Obama to postpone his planned Asia trip if a deal isn’t sealed by his planned departure time on Sunday…
“For the first time in eight months the president is finally getting his hands dirty, and now he’s going to hop on the plane? Please,” said a Democratic congressman, who requested anonymity.
“These deadlines are sort of silly,” the member added. “Remember the first one? March 18th? That was sort of like putting a calendar on Rahm’s back and inviting members to throw darts at him.”
Another Democrat told POLITICO that “this trip is really getting in the way of things.”
He’s bringing his A game and yet, by Hoyer’s own admission, they’re still short. How short? Stupak claims he’d be surprised if they had even 200 commitments, which may be technically true but likely has less to do with fear of voting yes than holding out for some kind of deal. My whip count guesstimate is that they’ve got 200 reluctant yeses, 190 hard no’s, and another 41 Dems just chilling and waiting to get paid. Pelosi, mindful of how toxic Reid’s bill became due to backroom deals, is now vowing that there won’t be any buy-offs in this one, but note the fine print: That doesn’t mean there won’t be a buy-off in some future bill as thanks for their “cooperation” on ObamaCare. No Cornhusker Kickbacks this time, in other words, but count on plenty of Cornhusker IOUs being passed quietly under the table.
While I’m still heavily inclined to think they’ll pass this abortion, there are reasons to Hope for Change. Stupak told reporters today that he’s actually picked up a few new no votes for his bloc after losing some members, and Blue Dog Jason Altmire says the House leadership has been forced to start recruiting among even the hard no’s to try to get to 216. If, as I suspect, the votes are there and are waiting for the right bribe to shake them loose, they shouldn’t need to go digging in the “no” column, should they? This is, perhaps, a lot harder than it looks.

Of course they have to rely on both Nancy and Harry to ensure that their bribe is actually added to a future bill, and not removed by the Senate.
In other words, they’d be fools to rely on these promises.
Fortunately for Nancy, most Democrats are fools.

I dunno… spin to save health care? Or is Obama postponing his trip because the Asians don’t WANT HIM THERE and it would serve as more negative publicity he doesn’t need right now?

I wondered if the first trip was postponed when it leaked out it was scheduled to take the kids to Indonesia for spring break at the taxpayers’ expense. After the fuss over the cost of the NYC date, maybe they needed an excuse to reschedule during school time, and healthcare was it.

Obama: “Our deadline is March 18″
Pelosi: “There is no deadline, we can do it whenever we feel it’s ready”
Gibbs: “Of course the legislature is completely in charge here and no date is set in stone”
Obama: “Absolutely, this will pass whenever it’s really ready which is why I’m postponing my trip to make sure this is done this week.”
Pelosi: “Not a problem, I can have the votes for you Monday, Tuesday tops… I’m just waiting for the CBO figures.”
Obama: “Of course, that’s why I’m here”
Pelosi: “Actually… could you stay through Sunday… not that there’s a deadline or anything and we have plenty of time to pass this bill”
Obama: “Sure… I can postpone my trip… I can see I’m needed here in this non-rush to get things done.”

Pelosi. She’s the true believer here. Obama is playing politics and wants to be seen as the “Lightworker” but doesn’t understand how to lead (think of the new boss brought in to save the company because he back stabbed his way to the top of the old one). He ignored Rahm’s advice (which as much as I dislike his goals, was strategically sound) and told Pelosi to go for it. So now Obama’s doing whatever Pelosi tells him to do to get the votes. He doesn’t know what’s in the bill. He doesn’t CARE what’s in the bill so long as he can say “A> he gave healthcare to the poor and B> It didn’t cost an extra dime to the budget”.
He THINKS he’s leading because that’s what all the super-important books he read in college about leadership says he should do but he’s off the beaten path of those books and he’s floundering and his ego won’t let him concede for the sake of others.
Note to the GOP. Give him an out. Give him ANY out that lets him save face and he’ll take it… even throwing Pelosi under the bus to do so.
Skywise on March 16, 2010 at 4:51 PM

Yes, I dread the thought of Barfy turning his attention to anything. It’s always a downer.
IF this health care bill fails, I think he will retreat into a sulk of sorts. The idea will be that he is regrouping for the next attack on the American public, but what will that be? Amnesty? Maybe. It won’t be job creation unless it’s some stupid ‘green’ garbage.
And the problem with amnesty is that it’s very unpopular not to mention that the Dems want health care passed as a double gift to illegals…. nothing like buying voting blocks with our money.
There’s a lot riding on this health care vote —– witness the appalling, galling desperation. It’s quite a show.

HONDA CALLS GRAHAM RACIST
Rep. Honda miffed at Graham’s ‘kamikaze’ statement
By Jordan Fabian – 03/16/10 04:31 PM ET
Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.) is not pleased with language Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) used that compared House Democrats’ efforts to pass healthcare reform legislation to a Japanese kamikaze mission.
Graham said Monday on a South Carolina radio program “Nancy Pelosi, I think, has got them all liquored up on sake and you know, they’re making a suicide run here.”
Honda, a Japanese-American who spent 14 months as a child in a World War II internment camp, issued a statement Tuesday, saying he was “disheartened” at Graham’s language.
“I am disheartened that Senator Graham chose to use racially tinged rhetoric to express his opposition to health care reform,” he said in a statement. “There is a way to engage in healthy debate without alienating Asian Americans, who are an important part of this democracy and healthcare reform.”

I honestly believe that if this health care bill goes down in flames the stock market will continue to rally. We might even see more hiring in the private sector.
As for PP resigning, there is an old politcal hand in Chicago that is convinced that he will be forced to resign next year. He thinks people will keep pushing about Sestak, lack of performance, questions about his rather lackluster performance and his past. As the polls drop, unemployment remains high, debt ratchets up, etc. the public will demand some answers and explanations.
One can only dream, eh? It would be interesting to see what the MSM would do. They really have some ‘splainin to do.

I heard on the news the other day, Muslims in Indonesia are protesting Obamas visit. I often wonder if this sudden cancellation by Obama, and now this plea for him to cancel again, doesn’t have more to do with giving him cover, to stay away from Indonesia, than it does this health care crap!
capejasmine on March 16, 2010 at 5:34 PM
I’d be delighted to think that this means he can’t get the votes for this ghastly bill. The one little detail he doesn’t seem to be considering is the foreign relations aspect. Foreign visits by the head of state are not casual things dreamed up when good airfare rates are available. The other countries have made plans and scheduled stuff to host Obama. If he keeps pushing back the dates to suit his domestic political agenda it inconveniences them and looks very rude. It’s one thing to delay/cancel/leave early when a crisis happens at home, but this is just politics.
Jill1066 on March 16, 2010 at 5:36 PM
Today, House sources requested that President Obama delay his planned Labor Day trip to the Middle East where he had planned to attend the dedication of the ‘Great Satan’ Museum opening in Egypt. Sources indicate that “the President is really hitting his stride’ stumping across the country for Health Care Reform. In fact, Obama this week gave his 37,000 speach on the subject to a group of coma patients assembled from the Chicago area. Said the president “I could tell they support our plan to make healthcare affordable, but they didn’t make for a very lively question and answer session’. Mr. Obama seems willing to push back this trip, just as he did back in March, again just prior to the Memorial Day congressioanl break, and yet again prior to the Summer recess just before Independence Day. This issue it ‘too important to delay any longer’ said the president. He intends to demand that Congress take a vote on the Senate bill before the Thanksgiving recess. “We don’t want to be eating turkey and talking about what might have been”, said Mr. Obama. Thought, he added, “it would make for a nice Christmas present to the American people’.
DrW on March 16, 2010 at 5:38 PM
Those protests can’t possibly be a factor. Obow is brave. Obow is strong. Not a chance some angry Asian white guys could possibly make the Brave Wun cancel his trip!
Nope–it could only be because he’s so powerful he needs to campaign and twist arms, with a bit of bribery, to mash his Health Control thing through.
God operates like this in Heaven. How could fellows in a trashed Third World country possibly press a Chicago Jesus to cancel such a trip?
(total sarc here, of course…your point is most excellent!)
