Oh my: Dems ask Obama to delay trip for O-Care again

posted at 4:30 pm on March 16, 2010 by Allahpundit

The spin here is that he’s been so goshdarned effective in twisting arms that they simply can’t bear to be without him. Which is another way of saying (a) they don’t have the votes, (b) they’re seriously afraid they can’t get the votes, and (c) they’re so low on sticks and carrots that they need to leverage the persuasive power of a guy who’s 0 for 3 in his last three times out on the stump. Never mind this Telegraph story: At this point, if The One wants to terrify Democratic fencesitters into voting yes, the threat should be that he will campaign for them, not that he won’t.

The White House has been bringing its A game in a final push to get health care passed — and some House Democrats are so pleased with the shift they want President Obama to postpone his planned Asia trip if a deal isn’t sealed by his planned departure time on Sunday…

“For the first time in eight months the president is finally getting his hands dirty, and now he’s going to hop on the plane? Please,” said a Democratic congressman, who requested anonymity.

“These deadlines are sort of silly,” the member added. “Remember the first one? March 18th? That was sort of like putting a calendar on Rahm’s back and inviting members to throw darts at him.”

Another Democrat told POLITICO that “this trip is really getting in the way of things.”

He’s bringing his A game and yet, by Hoyer’s own admission, they’re still short. How short? Stupak claims he’d be surprised if they had even 200 commitments, which may be technically true but likely has less to do with fear of voting yes than holding out for some kind of deal. My whip count guesstimate is that they’ve got 200 reluctant yeses, 190 hard no’s, and another 41 Dems just chilling and waiting to get paid. Pelosi, mindful of how toxic Reid’s bill became due to backroom deals, is now vowing that there won’t be any buy-offs in this one, but note the fine print: That doesn’t mean there won’t be a buy-off in some future bill as thanks for their “cooperation” on ObamaCare. No Cornhusker Kickbacks this time, in other words, but count on plenty of Cornhusker IOUs being passed quietly under the table.

While I’m still heavily inclined to think they’ll pass this abortion, there are reasons to Hope for Change. Stupak told reporters today that he’s actually picked up a few new no votes for his bloc after losing some members, and Blue Dog Jason Altmire says the House leadership has been forced to start recruiting among even the hard no’s to try to get to 216. If, as I suspect, the votes are there and are waiting for the right bribe to shake them loose, they shouldn’t need to go digging in the “no” column, should they? This is, perhaps, a lot harder than it looks.

What a pickle. Stay home and get picketed, or go to Indonesia and get picketed. I sure hope Brett Baier doesn’t softball O’Bozo tomorrow.

Just keep reminding House members who are still uncommitted what a nice reception has been waiting for Senator Ben Nelson and his wife back in Nebraska, ever since he sold their state down the river. Then ask them if they have purchased a retirement home in a different state….

It’s easier to dispatch the Army for ‘riot control’ at home than abroad.

Another Indonesia bowing trip delay? This will not do! Is it possible to have a POTUS lurch into fits and withdrawals if a bow or bows do not occur on schedule? Is there a patch to suppress discomfort for that? Are medical teams prepared for this kind of a crisis. Rahm would not let this go to waste that’s for sure.

What are the telltale signs that would indicate anxiety due to this so called delayed bowing syndrome? Here are some possibilities, 1. Invoking false claims of 3000 percent savings in health care coverage? Oh yeah, there’s one. 2. Yelling out code words in St Louis like, “medic,” just to have five or six police show up and drag out someone who calls you out on your lies. Now that’s a very big maybe? and finally, 3. Reluctantly going on Fox News Channel to try to sell what over 50 speeches couldn’t do? Definately!

Inexperienced reporters are delving deep into to congressional library archives as we speak to see if this type of conundrum has ever occurred before. What is the cure for this kind of disfunction, *cough* excuse me, I meant to say, ailment?

How dare you? Okay, did I hear somebody repeat what they said in St Louis?

did someone already mention that Perriello (5th CD, Va, DEM) is voting YES because the Hyde amendment spirit has been adhered to in the Senate bill.

er, Tom. The Senate bill has one program that specifically covers abortions. and guess who pays? the Feds.

Tom Perriello is a Dem. he is a true believer. he went to Yale. Robert Hurt will beat him in November.

I don’t see how they can guarantee ANY payoffs to anyone. The sidecar bill is already coming back bad from the CBO, they can’t include any kickbacks there as anything they put in it would not reduce the deficit by 1 Billion dollars. Kickbacks would increase the deficit. And if they pass it without kickbacks, this congress is lame duck immediately. When does Nancy pass ANYTHING with kickbacks to these Congressman? What am I missing?

You’re very sweet, but I think you are the one that actually came up with the term in describing my query about peeps opinions of whether this thing getting passed, and if they felt at all schitzoid with the yo-yo nature of yes they do! No they don’t!…but maybe that was the “too-much-wine” night!

I was really on the ledge, ready to swan dive off! (Rhetorically, I might add.)

The White House has been bringing its A game in a final push to get health care passed

That’s his “A Game”? That’s all he’s got? Really? No wonder he gave himself a B+. His sense of accomplishment is less than pathetic.

Guardian on March 16, 2010 at 8:21 PM

Barack Obama has said he will not campaign for any Democratic congressmen who fails to support health care reform.

It’s not a bug, it’s a feature!

if they had the votes, they would have had the vote; the longer it goes without the vote, the tougher it is going to be to get a vote;
Keep on keeping on, that is how we will prevail

TeresainFortWorth on March 16, 2010 at 5:48 PM

How many times do I have to say this, there are NO uncommitted house members!!! They have the votes, they will get it passed, they just need to focus-group the spin a little more.

I can’t tell you all how much I desperately want to be wrong about this, but I was right about the senate vote and every other time anyone said “IT’S DEAD”. So far, I’ve been right every single time, and for the right reason. They are not going to give this up, they have never been this close, this is their time.

That’s why they’re blatantly (as opposed to covertly) trashing the Constitution this time. They don’t care what the rules are, they want a socialist America at all costs. We will not stop them, no matter what we do, and we don’t have the will to do what would stop them.
