CNN: ObamaCare opponents 11 votes away from killing the bill
posted at 9:21 pm on March 16, 2010 by Allahpundit
I maintain that whip counts are worthless, but (a) the GOP has the same count and (b) since we’re probably headed for a bitter defeat this weekend, we should enjoy our illusions of hope while we can.
Feel the nomentum. Can you feel it?
Five more House Democrats said Tuesday that they will vote against Senate health care legislation, which puts opponents of reform just 11 votes shy of the 216 needed to prevent President Obama from scoring a major victory on his top domestic priority…
A total of 27 House Democrats, including nine who supported the House plan in November, have indicated that they would join a unified Republican caucus in opposing the Senate plan, which passed in that chamber December 24 with the minimum required 60 votes…
Of the 39 Democrats who voted against the House plan in November, 17 have indicated that they will vote against the Senate plan as written, 11 remain uncommitted, and nine did not return repeated calls for comment.
One member, Parker Griffith of Alabama, became a Republican in December. An additional member, Rep. Eric Massa of New York, resigned his seat last week.
If the reports tonight are true, Kucinich will be a no-to-yes flip tomorrow. Even so, all we need are 11 of the 19 undecided Dems who hated this thing enough to vote no on the House bill way back in November? Granted, the Senate bill is kinda sorta more fiscally conservative than Pelosi’s bill was (no public option, for starters), but the political climate is more toxic now too. Eleven seems … possible, especially with the phones melting down. No wonder The One feels obliged to crawl to Fox News tomorrow to try to make the case to centrist Dems and independents, in case they didn’t grasp it the previous nine thousand times he made it.
Here’s a scene from the Hill captured by CBS this afternoon; note the line near the end about a “Chavez” taking over the country. As I’m writing this, Ed forwards me this mysterious link along with a reminder of comments from Democrat Carol Shea-Porter from January. Dude — the women are plotting.

To all those that still hold on to a hope in “We the People”, remember that it is that People that elected Barack Hussein Obama to the White Hpuse with a supermajority in the Senate and an overwhelming majority in the House.
If the People don’t care enough to vet Obama, what makes you sure they care enough to replace him and his Congress with something better?
We are missing more than a Reagan. We are missing a nation that would see a Reagan if he even existed.

Honestly, I still blame Olympia Snowe for allowing the genie out of the bottle when she allowed it out of committee, but that was like bills ago…remember the “Baucus bill”,anyone?
On that topic, what bill, exactly, are they voting on? There isn’t one. None of this is even close to being constitutional.
SouthernGent on March 16, 2010 at 9:36 PM
I’ve been saying something similar to myself about Senate minority “leader” Bitch McConnell (who plotted with Reid to get the bill passed in the Senate on Christmas Eve)and how no one in the Senate used the Parliamentary maneuvers available, such as having the bill read outloud, all 2700 pages, twice. If the senate GOP had done their jobs this bill would NEVER HAVE BEEN PASSED OUT OF THE SENATE AS OF THIS DATE!!!
If we get shanked by obamacare, we can thank the senate GOP.
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.

Uh… that is how the man makes his living: melodrama, on both sides of the fence. Post an “Endgame” story, followed soon after by “It’s Toast!” then back again.
I would feel sorry for him, on the grounds that one way or another, he’ll have to pick a new storyline soon. But with Dodd’s nationalization of finance gearing up and carbon control legislation in the wings, his gig is secure for some time to come.
JDPerren on March 16, 2010 at 10:51 PM
There is plenty of reason to believe this will be undone by the next congress if it is enacted. The people so far have kept if from becoming law. The people being against it is the only reason it is not law now. What is happening in congress is the democrat leadership is doing everything possible to pull this out before the easter break. They know once the congress critters get back home to face thier constituents all hope of passage will be lost. This week is the most important week in our history politically. When this week is over we will know whether “we the people” means anything anymore.

I think kanda was talking about the Slaughter solution, which would be more easily undone than overturning it with the necessary supermajority. Either way, they’re on the record with their vote, Slaughter House Rules or no. They don’t like it, though, so kanda’s point about keeping the pressure on this week is correct.

Yeah what the hell has gotten into you guys? Look at that Reagan billboard. Why is he smiling? Why aren’t you smiling?
Pelosi and her crew are hated by 80% of adults. Get in there and tear them up! Get a Republican Speaker banging on the desk in the Oval Office that if Obama won’t repeal, delay, postpone, sunset Obamacare–whatever, if he won’t help kill it then he can’t get anything through! That would not pass muster in the SCOTUS since the congress can change any law by (supermajority in the senate)majority votes in both houses of congress and the president signs it. Reid can’t make a law that supercedes the constitution.

QUESTION FOR EVERYONE AT HOTAIR,
If you are calling these congressmen to tell them to vote NO, what do you say when they ask if you are from their state? Do you tell them the truth that you are calling from another state? Or do you find some city from their state and say you are from that city?
What about on emails? Some congressmen’s websites will kickback your email if you are not from their district. How do you get the email through to them?
texasconserv on March 16, 2010 at 11:12 PM
Unfortunately, president has been not to interfere in the congress setting of rules by which they operate. This can be construed as a rule change. This being struck down by SCOTUS is far from guaranteed.

Please do not forget that 59 million did vet him and voted NO! I am not knocking you but you are talking about people that were only listening to one side before they voted. Many of those same people have no choice but to see what the real thing is now. I know many, many, people that ignorantly voted for him and have changed their minds now. Those same people are very vociferous about it I might add. You may be right, I just think that people have woken up ,finally!
bluemarlin on March 16, 2010 at 11:17 PM
1) Only tell them you’re not a constituent if they ask. If they do ask, remind them that this bill affects all Americans and urge them to do the right thing. Additionally, tell them that if they vote for the bill, you will do all you can to defeat them in the midterms by contributing money to and phone banking for their opponent.
2) This site has a workaround for the e-mails. (I got to it from HughHewitt.com so it’s legit)
darii on March 16, 2010 at 11:19 PM
Of course, if you’re not intending to donate to their opponent or phonebank, you shouldn’t say those things, natch.
darii on March 16, 2010 at 11:20 PM
You only have one congressperson and two senators. You should call your own congressperson. Make your view known. If they are against it already, tell them you support them. If they are undecided, urge then to vote against it. If they are a yes vote, let them know you don’t support this and a yes vote by them will cost them your vote come November but always urge them to vote no. You should expect they will check your voter registration in their district when you give your name so don’t try to scam them. They have online access to the voter registration lists. You will just be wasting your time. Play by the rules. Be honest.

Once a bill becomes law it is not a rule change it is law. Don’t confuse house and senate rules with a bill or a law. Once law the consitution applies.
kanda on March 16, 2010 at 11:22 PM
Well, yeah. Although would you agree telling them you will contribute to their midterm opponent if they vote yes and will contribute to them if they vote no (as long as you do it) is ok even if you’re not from their district?

That’s what PAC’s do. Personally, I would only contribute to my own candidates in my district and state. Contributing to an opponent outside my district is not as powerful as a vote against them in November would be IMHO.

I think Nancy Pelosi needs to be removed from office. Not just because I loathe her but because she has obviously violated her oath of office. Not only has she not upheld and defended the Constitution but she has actively worked to undermine it. The woman is evil IMO. She is extremely wealthy and able to shield herself from the Marxist legislation she tries to force on the rest of us. Strip of her wealth and make her live like the rest of us. I would advocate a life sentence for her and much of the Leftists for the willful destruction of our nation and the impoverishment of millions of American citizens.

In fact the passing of this bill, despite the thunderous opposition to it, will give the Dems a level of audacity never seen before in history. I should imagine they’ll want to do something about all of this evil right wing disinformation that’s flying around, so perhaps we’ll start hearing about the Fairness Doctrine again.
Sharke on March 17, 2010 at 1:16 AM
Once they’ve socialized health care and passed cap and trade, they’ll be inclined to do something about the unacceptable carbon footprint of energy guzzling hospitals. Surely some of those power-hungry life support machines can be switched off. And do the lights in operating theaters need to be so bright?

I filled out my survey today. I was surprised the questions are very limited. Name, birthdate, age, own/rent/whatever your dwelling, if you own it, do you have a mortgage, phone number and race.
I didn’t put in the phone number, I reflexively answered the dwelling questions, I wished I had skipped them.
Race, I put AMERICAN (checked the “other” box and wrote in American).
Wonder what they will do with that one!!!

What had crept up to the 70% mark (70% chance of passage) has collapsed to 35%.
I don’t know any details about the volume or any of that. It’s a significant drop for sure, and one promising sign that this debacle fails.

Just a minor point. Don’t blame Snowe or McConnell for the bill getting our of the Senate and over to the House. Had the Republicans been able to kill the bill in the Senate, the Dems in the House would have cover in the fall and there would not be the great bloodletting that is sure to take place in November.
Am I saying that Snowe and McConnell are geniuses? Uhh, negative. They just got lucky.
BigAlSouth on March 17, 2010 at 7:15 AM
Frankly, this whole health care thing has been a virtual game of Chicken for both sides of the aisle, because no matter which way it goes, somebody is going to end up getting their clock cleaned in November.
If this thing passes, it is going to destroy the health care system in this country as we know it and the Democrats will be voted out en masse come Election Day.
It this thing fails, you better believe B.O. is going to pull out all the stops to make the Republicans look like the Bad Guys here, and the MSM will go along with it with an almost bloodthirsty maniacal sense of glee, and there will be people out there stupid to buy it, possibly leading the Democrats to retain power in November.
Meanwhile, We The People end up on the losing end either way, resulting in all of us having to deal with either a health care system gone wacky or with the system staying the way it is, with premiums continuing to skyrocket into the stratosphere and people struggling to maintain costs without going into debt.
Which is why the one thing I hope for above all else is that the entire process is just brought to a screeching halt through mutual agreement on both sides, on the basis that this thing needs to be brought back to the drawing board and rethought out one step at a time, resulting in something that everyone can agree on, and will end up being beneficial for the rest of us.
But we are talking Washington here. So fat chance that ever happening, in anyone’s lifetime!
pilamaye on March 17, 2010 at 7:20 AM
If I were an undecided Democrat, my biggest fear would be that the House will pass the Senate bill but that the reconciliation fix will die in the Senate. If President Obama tried to talk me into voting for the Senate bill, I would ask in return that he issue a public statement that, in the event the House passes the Senate bill, he will promise to veto it unless the Senate passes the reconciliation fix within 10 days (the time available to him to veto the earlier bill).
Is that a possible scenario — that someone would demand this of Obama? Is it possible that he would agree to this?

To get a hold of someone I need to write or speak to badly, I use my fax. For example, I requested something I wanted to a place in Germany, wrote the letter in English even though I could have done it in Spanish (they get letters from around the world) and sent it…$7 on the phone bill.
Same thing with Kathy Dahlkemper which is from my district, and same city just like Tom Ridge. For me the best way to communicate is via computer in a letter, “preview” the whole thing, add, delete, and fax it. It gets to a desk faster, you won’t hear a busy signal, and you won’t speak to a nobody or a clueless. Make sure you send it to BOTH the local office and the DC office!!!!!!
If it’s out of state, I don’t believe in the fact that you are not represented by them–in a collective way, they represent all Americans. You may ask a question or demand something that a constituent of his/her state is too afraid to do.
If they deny hearing your voice, come back here and email Glenn Beck, Rush, et al. If you’re on Twitter or FB do the same.

This may explain that InTrade movement in the middle of the night.
News from GretaWire:
I was tipped off to a study done by the Beacon Hill Institute. I need to read the study to get a better understanding of it (it will be released tomorrow I am told) – but I was tipped off to the conclusion about jobs..and the conclusion is grim! Here is what I received:
“…This bill will cost jobs using non-partisan numbers from CBO. This is executive summary of the study from Beacon Hill Institute at Suffolk University in Boston..”
Executive Summary
Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has urged passage of the massive health reform plan moving through Congress as a way to create up to 400,000 jobs. Speaker Pelosi bases her claim on a report by the Center for American Progress (CAP) in which the Center estimates that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) would create 250,000 to 400,000 jobs per year over 10 years.
It turns out, however, that its methodology, stripped of unsupportable claims about savings in health care costs, shows just the opposite of what CAP intended. PPACA is a job killer, not a job creator. Using the CAP methodology, we find that the bill would destroy a total of 120,000 to 700,000 jobs by 2019, a far cry from the number suggested by leading advocates.
Mr Purple on March 17, 2010 at 8:43 AM
If Obama, Pelosi, and Reid conspired to impose martial law to dictate the government takeover of healthcare, the MSM wouldn’t have any problems with that. To the MSM, only Republican governance is imperial.

Wasting my time? I think not! I’ve received email replies from every Rep I contacted OUTSIDE of my district – they all now know we’ll contribute to their opponents or walk the streets for their opponents or both if they vote for this B.S.

Any one care to guess what millions of angry Americans are going to do when their hopes are finally crushed and this is forced down their throats?
Think they’re just going to say “oh, well” and go back to watching American Idol?

That’s exactly what they’re gonna do, and I think you know it. This thing will pass, there are no “undecided democrats”, they already have the votes, they’re just trying to figure out the spin.
They have all the time in the world to get this done, and anyone who thinks the Easter break will make one bit of difference hasn’t been watching. Remember last summer? They didn’t listen then either.
Do you really want to give a name to those who think like me (and Allahpundit)? How about “realist”.

Pelosi’s next gambit: Have all the female house democrats jump up and down screaming “If you vote against this bill, you’re anti-woman!”

They have online access to the voter registration lists. You will just be wasting your time. Play by the rules. Be honest.
Some of them do have an autoresponder to send an email reply. Good luck. ;^)
