Video: Coffee Party group therapy session

posted at 2:20 pm on March 15, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Lee Doren does a hilarious deconstruction of the Coffee Party, mainly by letting the Klatschers talk for themselves. Sounding as though they are attending a 12-step program for grief resolution, the activists mouth banalities about agreement and democracy, but appearances can be deceptive. While posing as centrists looking for a little peace in the valley, Lee does a little research on the leaders of this nascent movement and discovers … Obama activists:

Their idea of democracy is also interesting. “Democracy isn’t supposed to be about two teams fighting … it is about [a] community of people advancing common good.” Besides the fact that we’re a representative republic (with democratic processes), the notion that democracy is all about agreement certainly has the virtue of novelty. After all, if everyone agreed on how to advance the common good, you wouldn’t need democracy.  This sounds very similar to Barack Obama’s continued insistence that people need to stop talking about health-care reform and just accept his proposal.

Besides, why does the Coffee Party need to “restore democracy in America”?  The candidate they backed won the last election, as did the party they backed for Congress.  Do the Klatschers believe that Democrats have destroyed democracy in America?  Maybe they have more in common with the Tea Party than people think!

Dissent Is Only Patriotic When We Do It Party

Christien on March 15, 2010 at 3:12 PM

I’m missing the connection between Coffee Party and an event in American history…..or maybe they just aren’t very creative?

Hening on March 15, 2010 at 3:12 PM

Yeah, we know their ideas for liberty and peoples’ individual rights: it’s the democrat way or nothing – liberty and rights for all (as long as it’s their rights and priorities first).

mozalf on March 15, 2010 at 3:18 PM

the saddest thing about this group is that they are prime examples of the current public education system. I would suspect that a majority are twenty or thirty somethings with a college education. Yet they neither understand what a democracy is nor what form of government we actually have.
For the NTS idea we already have the interstate system and the money guzzling Amtrak why do we need more?

As for what to call the CPers…i like Java the Lump

JKotthoff on March 15, 2010 at 3:18 PM

I can’t wait for the weather to be perfect enough for these folks to strike out in the public view with their cool signs. I hope I don’t miss it.

When this Coffee Party thing first started, I thought maybe they were just stretching from the tea thing, because after the tea tax was when Americans first started drinking coffee more…but, nope, apparently not. :-/

Emily M. on March 15, 2010 at 3:23 PM

Thats why we don’t have a democracy, we have a REPUBLIC.

Osis on March 15, 2010 at 3:29 PM

No passion in their convictions. No fiery discourse. Only tedium and coffee.

RAB on March 15, 2010 at 3:30 PM

I’m starting a new party called The Why Can’t Stupid Liberals Just Adopt Conservative Principles and Shut Up About It Party. I will be holding the first meeting in a Quickie Mart with free Slurpees for all attendees. I have absolutely no doubt that CNN will be providing live coverage.

Bummer that their ideology and domain name are already taken;

I think you’re jumping to a conclusion.

I would assume that the only place you’ll see these protest signs are inside the coffee shops themselves. …Which shouldn’t be too much of a problem–I bet there’s more than enough room in a coffee shop for all 3 or 4 of those people who would actually show up with a sign in-hand.

What a sad, listless group of people. Makes me very confident about November.

scullymj on March 15, 2010 at 3:34 PM

The first mistake these idiots made was calling their movement the “coffee party.” They’ve defined themselves, through their name, as a snide parody of the Tea Party movement, instead of a movement in its own right. It’s like dating someone just to make your ex jealous – how long is THAT relationship going to last?

They don’t stand for anything except taking a swipe at the Tea Party. That’s why it’ll never go anywhere. People want solid action, not petty smugness.

Sharke on March 15, 2010 at 3:34 PM

My cat Bette is a Tea Partier and she would NOT agree.

I am guessing the Coffee Klatch Clan is laying the foundations for their upcoming turn as the minority voice, only this time they’ll be even less relevant.

“Democracy isn’t supposed to be about two teams fighting … it is about [a] community of people advancing common good.”

She left out the part where she concludes, “And we in this room know what’s best for the community, while the tea-baggers remain clueless. They just have to stop fighting us.”

shick on March 15, 2010 at 3:41 PM

Whoa…feel the uprising. Nothing scarier than a couple dozen Birkenstock wearing hippies amped up on caffene.

Wyznowski on March 15, 2010 at 3:43 PM

Do the Klatschers believe that Democrats have destroyed democracy in America?

They are po’d because the dems haven’t gone far enough in destroying our country.

jbh45 on March 15, 2010 at 3:45 PM

It’s hilarious how the left just cannot resist inserting the word “collective” into everything.

Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

The coffee houses of Europe during the 19th century were infamous meeting places for revolutionary radicals.

Skandia Recluse on March 15, 2010 at 3:57 PM

Democracy … it is about [a] community of people advancing common good.

Individual liberty, individual responsibility is NOT a ‘common good’? We have to surrender our individuality to the collective for the common good?

Resistance is futile?

Skandia Recluse on March 15, 2010 at 4:00 PM

Wasting time in a “meeting” to vote on what makes your heart pitter-patter… and then making a sign for it…?

Wasn’t this idea taken from the Saudis?

SnowSun on March 15, 2010 at 4:02 PM

I love how interested they are all of the sudden in “talking” and being civil to one another. Did they really expect that after 8 years of the most heinous accusations against the GOP and W.? How stupid to think that people would just join hands and sing now that Barry O. is president. But honestly – this is the la la land they live in.

I am struck by how incredibly passive the attendees were. It reminded me of a middle school class.

ronsfi on March 15, 2010 at 4:14 PM

“Democracy isn’t supposed to be about two teams fighting … it is about [a] community of people advancing common good.”

Congratulations, you’re already wrong.

Although I’m sure by disagreeing with you I’m a bad person who doesn’t deserve a vote in this “democracy” to profit the common good at the expense of the individual… weird that the expense column wasn’t mentioned in that statement until now.

Oddly I’m almost never part of the “common good” and almost always part of the “individuals” who meed to fund the “common good”.

I’ve learned that what is good for the “common good” is downright expensive and unavailable for me… except to pay for it.

Maybe we should call this “common good” something else. Maybe the “recipients of government largess”?

it is about [a] community of people advancing common good recipients of government largess .

Yeah, that works better; more accurate too.

gekkobear on March 15, 2010 at 4:19 PM

WoW!!!! The excitement!!!!

Maybe they can put the COFFEE part of their party to better use by filling enema bags with it.

It might help them get away from their CRAPPY views of America.

American Power tracked-back with, ‘The Coffee Party War!’.

exception on March 15, 2010 at 2:23 PM

..valid point. But, that having been said, can we start ignoring them now so the CP will just die a natural death instead of screaming in agony with rectal cancer?

jeanneb on March 15, 2010 at 5:53 PM

“Bloodsuckers” pretty well says it all.

jeanneb on March 15, 2010 at 5:55 PM

“Democracy isn’t supposed to be about two teams fighting … it is about [a] community of people advancing common good.”

Our problem seem to be we disagree on the defintion of “common good”.

Left common good: Take as much money from people as possible, grow the government as big as possible, take away freedom and liberty, control the population, ban guns.

Right common good: Freedom, liberty and equal opportunity (not outcome) for all.

darwin on March 15, 2010 at 5:58 PM

I prefer to call them Dregs and not klatschers. You know the stuff that is left over when you are done with the pot.

vinceautmorire on March 15, 2010 at 6:01 PM

Fortunately, you don’t. And neither does the government.

Hooray for the balance of power.

Dark-Star on March 15, 2010 at 10:01 PM

One of the concerns listed was copyright and patents. The far left lunatics actually want to rescind copyright and patents since all intellectual products belong to the people, and are not intellectual property.

They really want this!

Dhuka on March 15, 2010 at 11:29 PM

Dark-Star on March 15, 2010 at 10:01 PM

By “guns” here, I mean the most persuasive arguments. You need to get out and think occasionally. I’m not meaning real firearms.

View the video. What kind of energy did you see at the Coffee Party?

These people are totally demoralized. They’re trying to find a reason to keep fighting, when they view as far too right the group we view as far too left.

I think we’ve got all the guns. And they know it.

unclesmrgol on March 16, 2010 at 11:38 AM

“Democracy isn’t supposed to be about two teams fighting … it is about [a] community of people advancing common good.”

“Many of you are well enough off that … the tax cuts may have helped you,” Sen. Clinton said. “We’re saying that for America to get back on track, we’re probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We’re going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good.”-Hillary Clinton

“In order to get things like universal health care and a revamped education system, then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more.”-Michelle Obama
