Paul Ryan: This entire process has been a disgrace

posted at 6:21 pm on March 15, 2010 by Allahpundit

Eight minutes from this afternoon’s Budget Committee charade, at which the “shell bill” was duly passed and sent to Madam Speaker so that she can start adding all the happy little backroom deals she’s making with wavering Democrats to get to 216. I’m paraphrasing when I call it a “disgrace,” but only very slightly: This is an attack on both the process of the bill and the substance, with fiscal minutiae set in a broader ideological context (note the bit about the dependency culture around four minutes in). My hunch is that Pelosi’s going to abandon the Slaughter strategy in the end as there’s already enough anxiety among fencesitters about public perceptions of dealmaking that they won’t want to compound it with a dubious procedural move. But for now, everything’s on the table:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is leaving the door open on using a controversial procedure to move healthcare through the House.

The process would allow the House to “deem” the Senate bill passed when it votes on a package of changes to that legislation, perhaps as early as this weekend…

Pelosi said at a Monday press conference that no final decisions have been made, but that having the Rules Committee write such a rule for the reconciliation bill is “one option.”

“When we get our CBO score and our decisions from the Senate Parliamentarian, when we have the substance, then we will decide on the process,” Pelosi said.

The One admitted tonight to Jake Tapper that they don’t have the votes yet, which I guess explains why he had to needle Kucinich — a rare liberal no vote thus far — from the podium today in Ohio. Believe it or not, single-payer advocate Dizzy Denny really could be the tiebreaking vote on this one. As goes Dennis Kucinich, so goes the Republic.

We’re screwed

Guests aboard Air Force One included Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich, the local congressman, who voted against the administration-backed health care bill that cleared the House late last year.

There was no word on whether Obama lobbied for his vote en route to Ohio. But shortly after the president began his public remarks, someone in the crowd yelled, “Vote yes,” to Kucinich.

William Amos on March 15, 2010 at 6:26 PM

I don’t agree with Kucinich on ANYTHING, but you cannot say he is not prinicpled. He is a true hard core liberal and he admits it. The rest are weasels who try to lie to people and not admit what they really want to do to this country. I have some respect for Kucinich, as an enemy that is worthy o respect but that has to be defeated in terms of ideology.

Mojave Mark on March 15, 2010 at 6:33 PM

The senate bill has the forced payments to private insurance companies, which is anathema to liberals like Kucinich. A half-baked procedural end-run around the constitution will inevitably lead to the senate bill passing and all the “fixes” in a smoldering heap. I think he will vote no on that.

pedestrian on March 15, 2010 at 6:33 PM

I just don’t see this happening. There is so much more to gain by voting no. Dennis will hold out, because he knows his voters want a “better” bill. Why tie yourself to a sinking ship? When you can say you tried, and will keep trying until the right bill comes along.

A lot of Darwinists are going to have to start rethinking that whole “evolution” thing, and not just on a spiritual level.

The greatest trick of socialists/collectivists was convincing the feeble-minded pseudo-intellectuals of the world that their ideology represents “progress”, when in fact it’s actually a return to a more primitive form of social organization, prior to the emergence of individualism.

Ryan was far too soft in his description of the “process” – to the point of being plain wrong. He called it “the Washington way”. That is just not even close to reality. Never before has Washington taken to this sort of assault on America and transparent flouting of law in order to shove a very unpopular and un-Constitutional piece of legislation through. Ryan needs to get his bearings straight. In any other country, we’d call this “process” a coup.

We’d be six years closer to seeing “Lefty-land” implode under the weight of its own stupidity if we’d split in 2004. I wouldn’t give two sh!ts if it turned into “Cambodia, Part Deux”. Let them kill each other over who’s more left-wing than whom, which is how you know it would end, rather than bleeding me dry.

WitchDoctor on March 15, 2010 at 7:37 PM

I started to make this point once before and i feel that i should complete it.

In the history of our nation we have always relied on the consent of the people to give our government the power to enact the laws meant to rule us. This consent is an essential component to our government in order to give it legitimacy. It is realized by our representatives in government serving the will of the people. That is the heart of a republic. When the representatives who are entrusted to be the arm of the people decide to enact law that does not express the will of the people we have betrayed the very soul of our system of government. We will have ceased to be a republic and dictate to the very people that have entrusted us to represent them. The decision that is before the House of Representative in this bill is not about health care at all. It is about whether we will continue to be a republic or descend into a dictatorship.

Hawthorne on March 15, 2010 at 7:37 PM

I HATE this about Repblicans!!!!!!!!!!

Please, oh please, stop trashing Washington!

A) George Washington was a great man and I consider it an insult.

B) It diverts the cause of the problems from the nature of individual humans (including their group behavior…as so well understood by the Founding Fathers) to a place.

C) It fosters the “hate government” mindlessness, which B.1) plays into the Left’s emotional advantage, and B.2) turns off good conservatives from participating in legitimate governance.

D) It’s as bad as letting the Left define the terminology…e.g. calling all scandals “X-gate”, “progressives”, how they define “freedom” etc. etc….

Washington, D.C. is a great and must be seen as a grand city; it was established as the place to limit and exercise our great government.
