NYT’s great moment in objective journalism

posted at 12:55 pm on March 15, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Via CentristNet, an image that has to be seen to be believed. What do you think the New York Times had in mind with this imagery?

But the plan’s fate could depend on how a couple dozen Democratic congressmen answer the questions Mr. McConnell and Mr. Obama raised: Would passing health care devastate Democratic chances in the fall? Would rejecting it devastate a Democratic presidency?

In other words, will the Obama presidency become a political martyr for the progressive agenda?  It’s not terribly difficult to discern the subtext, if it can even really be called that, from the Times’ article.  What’s rather amazing is that the Paper of Record puts this in its news section rather than Opinion.

Next time, use a photograph.  Leave the Nola Lopez “illustrations” for the cartoon section, unless the Times wants to leave the impression that its entire paper is a cartoon … a strategy that, in this case, would be considered a success.

I thought all crosses had to be covered in His presence.

Did He just finish picking his nose?

The NYT could have related that to healthcare.

IlikedAUH2O on March 15, 2010 at 4:00 PM

Actually, no. As long as HE doesn’t specifically reject Islam, other Muslims may not necessarily think he’s apostate. He’s allowed to lie about his being Muslim to the Kuffar. (that would be us.)

Even his attendance in Rev. Jeremiah’s Church might not count as that so called church struck me as being more a cross between prayer meeting and a Black Muslim Mosque than a Christian Church.

Notice how Hussein has yet to find a local church to attend. It took him less time to find a dog. (that took awhile too. Maybe because dogs are Haram?)

Although it can be very difficult to be certain what another person’s religion might or might not be, it’s beginning to appear certain that Barack is not a born again Christian.

jcw46 on March 15, 2010 at 4:02 PM

jcw46, you wrote,

…it’s beginning to appear certain that Barack is not a born again Christian.

In fairness to President Obama, he never claimed to be a born-again Christian. He claims to be a Christian, plain and simple, as I do, as many do. I personally doubt his religious beliefs, such as they are, translate into actual convictions, but insinuations the President is a super-seekrit undercover Muslim are fringe-worthy and over-the-top.

troyriser_gopftw on March 15, 2010 at 4:13 PM

The NYT had lost its credibility long before they became an absolute tool to spread the lies and deceptions of Obama and his progressive obsession. That is why they don’t even own the building their operations are housed in. Liars and deceivers usually lose the only thing that substantiates their existence and that is the ignorance of the lemmings that subcribe to their madness. With the internet it is obvious that the truth is beyond their comprehension. Now, even the most brainwsashed lemmings know that.

volsense on March 15, 2010 at 4:40 PM

Ahhdunno. That looks like a “Red Cross” cross and so is referential to the current health care debate. The halo however…?

This inspired me to call my congressman Bill Foster (IL) and let him know that my family and I don’t support this. I feel better now. :) My wife and I haven’t worked for anyone local before but if Foster votes for it, this will be our first time.

Aha!

I think I found the image that inspired this-the photographer was simply trying to re-create this classic picture of Bob Dylan that ended up on the cover of his Greatest Hits album! You decide!

Move along, folks, nothing to see here.

Del Dolemonte on March 15, 2010 at 6:03 PM

Blasphemous. And right before Easter. It makes my blood boil. time to defeat this false messiah. If people are so taken with this loser, can you imagine what will happen when the real Anti-Christ finally comes along. You think people are fainting now? WOW, people are easily led to slaughter, aren’t they.

immigrantchick on March 15, 2010 at 6:11 PM

The pathetic masquerade photo didn’t even make it a Red Cross.

The NYT is certainly egging on the public during Lent by illustrating their atheist-socialist deceiver anti-christ posing with the resurrection of “this temple” White House to be rebuilt in 3 days after passing unconstitutional authoritarianism that will destroy our entire nation. Relegate a hate crime “with all the best intentions” committed by the free to lie NYT press. Statist-Care is a hate crime against the Constitution and every citizen’s Liberty. Why persist in this ludicrous agenda? It isn’t as if these affecting scribes and pharisees have influence outside of socialist havens.

They want a crucifixion, not I.

Organize Obama’s impeachment for ordering unconstitutional measures against this nation of American citizens.

I never hear the drive by media talk about what’s IN the bill, only the implications for O & the Ds (love their music) if it doesn’t pass. This healthcare atrocity will be the media’s Waterloo as well.

How can the atheists and agnostics in the Democratic party possibly approve of this kind of iconic imagery?

It would be humorous if it weren’t so absurd.

stevezilla on March 15, 2010 at 6:33 PM

I thought it looked a bit more like the one here.

Doubtless it’s supposed to be a mimicry of holy symbols, but it’s still stupid imagery that belies their archliberal bias.

azkag on March 15, 2010 at 6:19 PM

Sure you do. Read any AP or Reuters report and you walk away thinking the bill will provide coverage to “low income” families, give tax credits to businesses and contain health care costs, while also magically reducing the deficit.

Or put another way, a wonderful bill that everyone should support but those damn Republicans won’t let it happen (never mind that Dems control everything).

I can’t believe the NYTimes would publish a picture like this. The cross, the halo. Highly inappropriate! Their hypocracy is breathtaking. Just imagine if someone had published these same symbols with a picture of GWB? Think of the uproar.

Buffalo on March 15, 2010 at 8:18 PM

And the NYT thinks anyone would be stupid enough to pay for their online content (besides a few libs)?

tbear44 on March 15, 2010 at 8:35 PM

I think the cross (mainly because of its shape) is
reminiscent more of the ‘red cross’ (and the whole medical/health-related profession and field) symbology than anything else… Thus being said I am pretty sure that NYT just loved the whole ambiguity of this pic/image (precisely because the controvery they knew it would create) and that’s why they let it go into print like that… Their tactics are pretty lame if not downright pathetic…

It’s a very timely and legitimate point. The fact is that the Dems are bullying right now. “We’ve got the votes.”

Really?

AnninCA on March 15, 2010 at 11:42 PM

And the cross simply demonstrates what everyone said, even in the election.

This was one whale of a race/personality race for the country.

Now, we’re back to issues. Different ballgame.

I will always think that Ferraro nailed it. He was the right race, the right personality, at the right time.

AnninCA on March 15, 2010 at 11:44 PM

The NYT editors may be stupid but they’re also clever. The average person looks at that photo and even hears Mr. Subliminal saying “messiah, messiah.” The editors know their cute little disclaimer could always be it’s a Red Cross cross and not the Christian cross. So nuanced…

PC14 on March 16, 2010 at 12:12 AM

Yeah, I know, don’t answer a question with questions, but to question Obambi, I must.

Recall the kerfuffle over Huckberry’s staging a cross in his campaign video, or Sarah’s “staged” cross reflecting from her glasses. While the aforementioned may have been subtle or a quirk of lighting, the NYT doubles down w/ in your face imagery. Funny that Jim Wallis also picks this time to challenge Beck on “loving Jesus”. Bah!

AH_C on March 16, 2010 at 1:40 AM

Look what our government was doing on Christmas Eve, and now, look how we must see our President portrayed before Easter. We are fighting to save our country physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

mobydutch on March 16, 2010 at 3:18 AM

Again, let’s not make this out to be more then what it is. It is the cross most associated with the Red Cross. Notice how the top, bottom, and sides are all the same length. On the Christian cross the bottom is much, much longer. Let’s not do the stupid thing here like many did with Huckabee’s book shelf (NOTE: I do NOT want Huckabee as POTUS).

DethMetalCookieMonst on March 15, 2010 at 12:58 PM

Looks to me like they have purposefully photoshopped a halo in there behind his head. The halo even serves as a “rim” light to highlight his hand, which, of course, is in teacher/lecturing pose. Also, the cross has depth, 3d, like a real cross. So, I don’t agree with you. Re Huckabee, yeah, he comes off as too much don’t rock the boat.

Hey, Barry . . . it wouldn’t bleed so much if you’d keep your fingers out of there.
As for the cross, if it had been red, they might have gotten by with plausible denial of any “religious” attributes, but a white cross coupled with the glow of his gloriousness, well, that’s a tougher one to pass off. I guess it’s a good thing that the cross wasn’t afire . . .

tpitman on March 16, 2010 at 7:14 AM

fullogas on March 16, 2010 at 4:10 AM

I took that finger to be in a reaching pose, as if to cure lepers or make the lame walk. It is a very Christ-like use of the hands. It is also akin to ET’s use of the finger but I didn’t want to go there since ET had ear buds and not dumbo-like ears.

In other words, will the Obama presidency become a political martyr for the progressive agenda?

I am at a loss of what sickens me the most; Drudge’s news articles on Catholic Church rats, or this picture w/Ed’s comments above?

Of course ever since the campaign was a 1/3 of the way in, we all saw some comparison that were attempted to be established with our dear Lord Jesus with him. The only thing that has been missed all this time were the palm tree leaves, Obama riding on a donkey waving at his people.

The NYT attempted to shove this picture with their obvious lack of objectivity to all of us, at the worst time of the year; where Christians and Catholics revive Jesus’ Passion and celebrate His Resurrection.

The NYT states in a subconscious manner, that the healthcare bill, if it passes will become O’s resurrection as a country leader, as admired “by all”, and his preaching all over the country (with his chosen people, of course) inside all his venues will be reinvidicated. This would be accomplished, after all the excoriation, protests, yelling from one huge sector of the population who don’t like what he’s doing to America.

The analogy is interesting indeed behind their agenda, but is nothing further from the truth. Elevate a mere person to saintly, mystic and sacred standards is worth spitting at, comdemnation by Rome (regardless of what we think of the HQ’s).

Those who know my Catholic beliefs know very well the way I feel. As the saying goes, “the higher up you are, the harder the fall”. Let’s just pray we all don’t fall alongside him.
