Ramirez on Democrats’ ObamaCare death wish

posted at 9:08 am on March 13, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

No one can accuse two-time Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist Michael Ramirez of holding back — or of Investors Business Daily of a lack of courage in publishing him.  His latest take on the Democrats’ headlong rush to electoral oblivion in the midterms, and perhaps beyond, is dead-on accurate.  Backbenchers are being asked to blow up their political careers in order to save President Obama’s term in office.  But expect people to strongly object to the imagery and the declaration Ramirez uses:

Provocative?  Absolutely.  But this isn’t insinuating that Obama is a secret Muslim or that Democrats are terrorists.  It accuses Democrats of putting Obama the man ahead of their own Constitutional obligations, and their own careers.  Perhaps that could also have been depicted as falling on a grenade or committing seppuku, but for this age, the image instantly communicates exactly what the artist intends.

What do you think?

Ramirez has a terrific collection of his works: Everyone Has the Right to My Opinion, which covers the entire breadth of Ramirez’ career, and it gives a fascinating look at political history.  Read my review here, and watch my interviews with Ramirez here and here.  And don’t forget to check out the entire Investors.com site, which has now incorporated all of the former IBD Editorials, while individual investors still exist.

What’s “provocative” about it? What’s all the fuss about? It’s funny, period.

Shows perfectly what Obama and Obamacare are to the Democrat party.

I don’t even begin to see that this ‘toon is “over the top”, and I couldn’t understand why Ed presented it as something that some might consider over the top.

Try this lib pol-toon–and there’s thousands more like it out there. Libs are whiners.

True.

Barney Frank would definitely fall on his sword for the 72 virgins, just as long as they were the right type.

I liked it, but could understand why people would be upset.

We’d be upset if a Liberal did that to us.

nickj116 on March 13, 2010 at 5:18 PM

Ramirez got it right. To the Japanese,”seppuku” is viewed as an atonement for failure, in other words, an “honorable” way out. What the Democrats plan on doing has NOTHING to do with HONOR. Throwing one’s self on a grenade is also viewed as an honorable and self-less act. Once more, HONOR and SELFLESSNESS do NOT have anything to do with the Democrats in this situation.

Agreed, it is in no way over the top, it describes what the Dems are doing right now quite succinctly. Also that “cartoon” you linked was truly offensive, that anyone can think that way is just depressing.

SG1_Conservative on March 13, 2010 at 5:50 PM

Just don’t let Ramirez cross a DC street when a State Department vehicle makes a turn.

onlineanalyst on March 13, 2010 at 5:53 PM

It’s brilliant, no doubt.

But if it isn’t over the line, Ramirez is certainly putting his toes up against it.

JohnGalt23 on March 13, 2010 at 5:57 PM

Sorry for arriving so late to the party/ (Like y’all really care or I have anything to offer!)

Howeva…Wow, I guess I’m the only really nasty, ugly, awful, horrible hideous, baby-kitten killing, puppy torturing…well, you get the picture.

I’ll probably be drawn and quartered for this, but it seems to me, that I recall hearing that Mrs. Reid and her daughter were in a pretty scary, nasty accident yesterday.

Luckily, it appears that both will recover, with the quick and capable work from the medical professionals who attended them.
I am thankful for this. However, it can not be questioned–nor known–whether or not this would have turned out differently if (What’s the opposite of the “Wayback Machine?”)we fast forward to a similar accident in 2018, and it is Citizen Comrade Jane Doe and her daughter who are in a similar accident.
Isn’t Mrs. Reid, um pushing 70? If she had basic health care, aren’t there supposed to be equations (cost/benefit analyses), to determine what and how far treatment should progress?
This is just the tip of the iceburg, I could go on for pages.
Sigh, I’m sure our friends on the left would make sure to let us know that it isn’t even an appropriate analogy, as Mrs.Reid, as the wife of the Senate Majority Leader, doesn’t have the same health care plan!!!!

No Sheets Sherlock!!! Quick, grab the point!

“Obama akbar,” Not over the top, healthcare for all is the left’s paradise on earth, and Obama as Messiah is all the great and unmerciful towards infidels and Republicans who vote against his plan. Too bad he stays in office past 2010. But how does one draw suicide vests over all the Dems too scared to vote no on The Boondoggle. This is so apropos.
Looking forward to overriding all of his vetoes after 2010.
I can’t subscribe to IBD if the healthcare plan passes, since taxes will go up at least for the $30 per month subscription rate immediately after it passes, while the USA waits in anticipation of its free health care in 2013.

petefrt on March 14, 2010 at 8:35 AM

Suicide bombing is not a passife form of suicide like jumping on a grenade or seppuku. It is suicide/murder. Sorry if someone has already said this.

I voted for “It’s great, loved it, no problem”.

aengus on March 14, 2010 at 8:53 AM

Obamacare IS a suicide bomb. It will kill our healthcare system, and it will, in the long run, undermine the last remnants of individual freedom in this country, as once the government owns healthcare it can dictate every aspect of our lives.

And it is being pushed in a jihad manner… Think of Nancy Pelosi as the leader hiding in the cave in safety and the democrat rank and file as the homicide bombers being sent out on her orders.

They do this knowing that they will lose lots of their foot soldiers for the prospect of PERMANENT power in a decade or so.

wildcat84 on March 14, 2010 at 9:08 AM

Obummer may be just stupid but it seems like all his mistakes are in the favor of countries that can’t stand us, Iran etc. Love Ramirez’s cartoons so to me it is just truthful.

Townhall.com, owned by Hot Air’s New owner, STILL hasn’t reprinted this cartoon AS THEY NORMALLY DO along with all of Ramirez’s cartoons of this week and in the past.

I am very concerned by their apparent censorship and gutlessness and what THAT implies for their stewardship of Hot Air.

The cartoon is a bullseye. Kudo’s to Mike Ramirez.

Priceless!

Will radical islamists threaten to behead Ramirez……or will Democrats threaten to behead him?

olesparkie on March 15, 2010 at 7:43 AM

I love it. Just like the suicide bombers, how many Democrats are blowing up their poltical careers this week by signing on to Obamacare? How many of them realize that thirty pieces of silver is as mythical as 27 virgins?

olesparkie on March 15, 2010 at 7:43 AM

Dems are too damned lazy to behead dissenters. They will simply label it hate speech and demand an apology on behalf of Jihadi-Americans (a growing constituency among the Democrat party).

GarandFan on March 13, 2010 at 5:31 PM

With sepuku and throwing oneself on a grenade, the only one who dies is the person committing the act.

Passing health care will not only kill the career of many politicians, it kills the nation as a whole as well.

The image is both funny, and appropriate.

MarkTheGreat on March 15, 2010 at 9:49 AM

shaken on March 15, 2010 at 12:07 PM

Zorg on March 15, 2010 at 1:15 PM

Perhaps that could also have been depicted as falling on a grenade or committing seppuku, but for this age, the image instantly communicates exactly what the artist intends.

Falling on your grenade is viewed as a noble sacrifice for the lives of your comrades. Committing seppuku is regaining lost honor. Neither would have given the Dem-care sacrificial goats the proper connotations.
