Quotes of the day
posted at 9:30 pm on March 13, 2010 by Allahpundit
“This weekend marks the kick-off of the Coffee Parties across the country— which has been billed as the liberal response to the Tea Party movement — and I stopped by one of the Washington D.C. area gatherings Saturday morning at Peregrine Espresso in the Eastern Market area — only to find a small gathering of five activists huddled at a small table.
“Kathleen Frydl, a professor on sabbatical from Berkeley, led the discussion on topics ranging from Tea Partiers to the media. Frydl said that even though she finds parts of the Tea Party movement to be ‘nuts,’ there are a couple of things she agrees with the conservative activists on, like adopting a simpler tax code. She took issue with a recent Tea Party document of legislative demands called the ‘Contract from America’ as an example of how Tea Partiers are trying to ‘speak for America.’…
“They spoke mostly in generalities — not diving into the specifics of policy or really asserting positions on any topic — about health care, energy, poverty and climate change, though one participant said he feels strongly about immigration reform, explaining ‘everyone should live where they want to live.’”
***
“The approximately 50 people in attendance ranged from students, young people in their 20s, a female military officer in her upper 50s who was an ardent pacifist, and many middle-aged people like myself who weren’t sure what they were walking into but were open to a new paradigm. Led by activist and entrepreneur Andy Shallal and CodePink founder Medea Benjamin, the meeting’s rules were clear: No bashing of the Tea Party and a willingness to talk and listen. The presence of a CNN crew lent a festive air as did the free (organic, free trade) coffee…
“I recalled the first time I voted in an election. I’ll never forget the excitement — even though I was out of the country and voted absentee. It was a seminal moment for me, the time I realized I played a part in the direction of my country. It was my Patriot Moment. Today was my second Patriot Moment. If ever there were a grassroots movement, this is it. But it can’t be portrayed as elitist or against anything because today I was part of something that had no boundaries. We may not have created an agenda for the future or a manifesto or a slogan. But we did create a sense of hope and purpose and conciliation.
“In the coming months, the Coffee Party may even begin talking to the Tea Party; perhaps we can jointly attend a Caffeine Party.”
***
“‘Frankly, we are petrified by the tea party and what they stand for and what they’re talking about,’ said Monte Carmel, a retired business executive from West Palm Beach.
“‘I’m tired of all the misinformation, the cute little labels the fright-wing has thrown on everything,’ said a man named Russ.
“‘To me, government is the answer. I’m really sort of perplexed,’ said a man named Joe who said he had been a teacher for 44 years…
“Brownstein, who is white, said ‘white southerners in this country are going nuts’ because of the popularity of black figures like President Obama and Oprah Winfrey. He said he raised the issue because ‘you have to know who your enemy is.’”

Aggie95 on March 13, 2010 at 11:17 PM
Tea Party has direct historical grounding. Also “TEA” itself, as many of us know, is a great acronym that can stand for “Taxed Enough Already.”
Coffee Party? Good grief, what an ersatz, half-baked, unimaginative, doofus-esque, entirely reactive name.
MSM reporters are all too eager to take it seriously, since they are leftists, but the idiocy is stacked about a hundred miles high with lame-o’s like those.
Edouard on March 13, 2010 at 11:18 PM
Goodness sakes — blushing — Stevie Ray! And one of his best albums was Texas Flood.
John the Libertarian on March 13, 2010 at 11:19 PM
Would that be the reconstruction of the fables or was that the fables of the reconscruction?

Another piece of Monkees trivia.. Michael Nesmith is a millionaire without the music and TV contract. His mother invented Liquid Paper.

CNN thinks that 5 flannel-clad people with questionable hygiene drinking coffee is newsworthy?
I guess I should be ready for all-network coverage when 10 of my girlfriends and I get together for margaritas next week.

In my defense, he died twenty years ago and I was 16 and into country music.
TXMomof3 on March 13, 2010 at 11:22 PM
Well, I personally liked your first and third albums best, but it’s hard to do battle with Brothers In Arms.
John the Libertarian on March 13, 2010 at 11:22 PM
O.K. guess who wrote some of the songs for the monkee’s ….hint …. TR

How about damitohell? Is that a Texas cuss word?
And Toyota cars rank well over other makes in terms of reliability and low maintenance regardless of which module they are. I’ve own them for years with absolutely no problems.

Yeah, I was a youngin too and didn’t realize him until well after his death.
John the Libertarian on March 13, 2010 at 11:23 PM
Another piece of trivia: Neil Young played guitar on one of the Monkees songs.
Bishop on March 13, 2010 at 11:23 PM
yep but its spelled damnittahell
Aggie95 on March 13, 2010 at 11:24 PM
That would be correct.

I was eating pizza in my Camaro when I heard that SRV had died in a helo crash.
Bishop on March 13, 2010 at 11:28 PM
Brother in Arms was great but I take more of a shine to On Every Streetalbumn. Calling Elvis is a classic. Knopfler is one of the best guitarist to ever pick one up.
Dire Straits on March 13, 2010 at 11:30 PM
I don’t branch out much beyond country music.

TXMomof3 on March 13, 2010 at 11:36 PM

Dire Straits on March 13, 2010 at 11:37 PM

Aggie95 on March 13, 2010 at 11:38 PM
I included Ed to see if anyone would say “WTF”?
Let’s face it, “Drivin’ My Life Away” and “I Love A Rainy Night” do not a star make.
Bishop on March 13, 2010 at 11:43 PM
LOL. I can see it now: “Christine’s Back!!!” Just when you thot that Plymouth was dead, she reincarnated herself as a Prius.
I had an idle thot the other day, but may as well mention it here. Remember when Goracle Jr got busted driving his Prius faster than believed possible – maybe that was actually the earliest report of a runaway Prius — but we all thot it was just a pothead acting stupidly. Things that make you go hmmm. Hehehe.
AH_C on March 13, 2010 at 11:45 PM
Ha! That is the only one I agreed with you on!
TXMomof3 on March 13, 2010 at 11:45 PM
’bout yer age
John the Libertarian on March 13, 2010 at 11:49 PM
Agreed. I’ve got Calling Elvis on my iPod when I run in the hills — that lick in the middle where he drops you into the driving beat of the verse is truly inspired.
John the Libertarian on March 13, 2010 at 11:51 PM
I bet you liked this Classic. This is one of my favorite Country music artist. I think he got me into beer drinking. :)

TXMomof3 on March 13, 2010 at 11:56 PM

TXMomof3 on March 14, 2010 at 12:09 AM
Good one. I know some women who were “rockers” who would fight you for George Strait. Particularly his older music.
Dire Straits on March 14, 2010 at 12:11 AM
From that tune, it was an easy branch into George Strait “I’ve Come To Expect It From You” and Clint Black “Put Yourself In My Shoes”.
John the Libertarian on March 14, 2010 at 12:12 AM
George is the man.

She was (maybe still is) a hottie but I wasn’t a big fan.
Dire Straits on March 14, 2010 at 12:20 AM
I love Keith Urban. Making Memories of Us and Raining on Sunday are great.
It is 1400 miles from home and all I have ever known. I am a novelty up here. One guy asked me to talk about anything so that he could hear me talk. You’re not from around here, are you? I get that a lot.

We’ll be at the Buffalo Chip campground, plan on seeing Kid Rock on August 10th just for the ambiance.
I might enter a bike in the Burnout Drag competition but still waiting to see. Look for anyone wearing a “Bishop Racing” shirt on that day (guys who look as if they should be playing for the Steelers O-line) and you will eventually find me.
Bishop on March 14, 2010 at 12:31 AM
Texas is a huge state. For you to pick out East Texas kind of surprised me. I am from a little town near Tyler.

Halfway between Athens and Canton. Nowhere to be precise.
TXMomof3 on March 14, 2010 at 12:36 AM
Nope we go to Jacks (One Eyed Jacks) because FT is starting to have that ‘Hard Rock Cafe’ feel to it; people show up to get their picture taken and post it on Facebook, IMHO. Besides, Johnny Law loves to monitor the place.
