Obama by proxy
posted at 3:00 pm on March 13, 2010 by Doctor Zero
What’s your favorite example of mindless, slavering Palin hatred? The following excerpt comes from a review of Big Love, HBO’s lurid soap opera about a polygamist family:
What’s taking the Sissy Spacek and Perry King characters so long to discover Bill’s a polygamist? Hundreds of people in Greater Salt Lake City – polygamist and non-polygamist, Juniper Creek residents, law enforcement officials, drive-in attendants, neighbors – must know by now, no? At the end of season one, Barb admitted to an assistant to the governor’s wife that she was “involved in a polygamist lifestyle.” (But then again, nobody seemed to catch on to what a petty little idiot Sarah Palin was before John McCain snatched her from obscurity. Maybe a Utah state senate race simply doesn’t invite a ton of scrutiny.)
It may not be as flashy as Kathy Griffin grunting about her primitive urge to push the former governor of Alaska down a flight of stairs, but I like the sheer drive-by stupidity of it. There are plenty of other lefties out there, shivering with an anger so intense they can’t help vomiting it into movie reviews, fashion articles, sports stories, and other inappropriate venues, to the discomfort of readers who weren’t looking for crazy sandwich-board rants about Sarah Palin.
What drives Palin Derangement Syndrome to such intensity? Did anyone except John Edwards feel this passionately about John Edwards after he concluded a losing campaign as a vice-presidential candidate? Certainly Palin has remained more prominent than most such candidates, writing a blockbuster autobiography and launching a daring raid against the Death Panel Star from her Facebook page on Yavin-4… but has she really done anything to inspire this level of personal venom?
Few of the people issuing these lowbrow fatwas against her are residents of Alaska, so they’ve never lived under her authority, and know little about her actions as governor. They’re not having policy arguments with her, or rebelling against something she did in office. She was pretty tough on Obama during the latter days of the campaign, but that’s a role traditionally filled by all veep candidates, and it didn’t work – he still got elected. She’s not a feisty provocateur like Ann Coulter, striking a kung fu stance after every trenchant column and beckoning liberals to take their best shot at her. Palin’s speeches and writing are forceful and confident, but liberals respond as if she were screaming insults at them, or maybe hunting them for sport with her rifle.
Many of these vitriolic attacks are threads in the Shroud of Contempt, which the Left uses to smother opponents through its media and cultural influence, by constructing a common perception of them as too stupid or crazy to take seriously. Some of the animosity is born from fear that Palin might successfully re-enter politics. Listening to the criticism mixed in with the insults, I wonder if there might be another, more subtle reason behind the level of rage directed at John McCain’s affable running mate:
Sarah Palin is Obama by proxy.
Palin’s admirers often marvel at how the charges leveled against her are far more applicable to the current President. People who voted for an undistinguished junior senator from Illinois with few accomplishments are quick to assault Palin’s “lack of experience.” The same folks who instruct us that Barack Obama is a physical paragon, and Michelle Obama is the most beautiful woman in the world – a goddess who causes fashion models to slink from her path in shame – belittle Palin for her good looks. Defenders of the most fabulously corrupt administration in modern history mumble about the murky details of obscure “scandals” manufactured by Alaskan bloggers. They turn away from the sad spectacle of a manifestly incompetent President to sneer that a woman who alters the course of legislative battles with blog posts is some kind of an idiot.
They dismiss Going Rogue as “ghost written” while ignoring the specter of Bill Ayers plodding through Obama’s books, a sputtering bomb clutched in its skeletal fingers. A few lines scribbled on Palin’s palm glow more brightly in their imaginations than terabytes of data flowing across the screen of Obama’s teleprompter. They accuse Palin of being a “divisive” and “polarizing” figure, while Obama launches Taxi Driver rants against evil insurance companies, cops acting stupidly, tonsil-stealing doctors, and everyone else who crosses his path.
I used to dismiss these contradictions as simply hypocrisy, but perhaps these people are angry at Palin because of her perceived similarities to Barack Obama, not in spite of them. They need someplace to ground the lightning of their frustration and disappointment, and they’re not allowed to be angry at Obama. They wear a set of rusty intellectual chains that require them to believe all criticism of Obama is racist, or paid for by his fat-cat arch-enemies. Accepting the notion that government power is morally superior to free enterprise, and a virtuous nation therefore has a very large government, requires belief in the masters of the State as titans of mind and spirit. How could a gigantic State be morally defensible, if its leaders aren’t supermen? If you find yourself suspecting the architect of the largest, most expensive government America has ever known might not be as smart or wise as you were led to believe last November, your entire world-view is threatened.
It’s very important for liberals to deflect those suspicions onto a designated, culturally approved target. Sarah Palin is a convenient hate fetish for increasingly nervous and confused Left, because she embodies the qualities of the red-state America they loathe… and serves as a voodoo doll for uncomfortable criticisms of Obama, which they project onto her. As events continue to demonstrate those criticisms were far more important than any of the superficial or imaginary reasons they voted for him, they’ll jab pins into that voodoo doll with increasing fury, even though the object of their anger now spends her days working for a news network none of them would be caught dead watching.
The pitfall of an insular, heavily biased media culture is that it doesn’t process negative feedback well. Those of us who never joined the Obama cult can only frown at the chunks of bile strewn through discourse that should have nothing to do with politics, and laugh when people who voted Joe Biden into office sputter about what a lousy vice-president Sarah Palin would have made.

Dr. Zero’s threads on Sarah Palin make so much sense as opposed to those at HA whose primary mission seems to be to discredit Palin and promote a plastic “flim-flam” man who says whetever he thinks voters want to hear that day.

The whole SP “thing” is actually quite entertaining!
It’s not as though she’s another Cindy Sheehan…traipsing around the country, using a bull-horn to make outlandish statements. The woman packs them in wherever she goes and they’re always on their feet applauding as she leaves the stage.
The Liberal’s full-bore effort to minimize Sarah Palin has blown back in their faces at every turn. She’s more relevant now than she was a year ago.
And she’s nowhere near done, yet.
You go, girl.

The left is always terrified of strong conservatives, women especially because they have none on their side. Same for blacks, hispanics or gays.

The under current of liberalism is hate. Without racial hatred and class envy the elitests would be such a minority their mere existence would not be relevant. As long as they can convince the underprivileged and intellectually challenged that they will protect them from the evil conservatives, they can revel in thinking they are “loved” by their followers and their egos are nourished by their meaningless charade. When the goal is to control those less fortunate because that is their purpose in life.

What’s truly credible here is that all politicians, with a few rare exceptions, use ghostwriters. Why did her use cause such a stir?

You’re right, but my God, I’ve never seen any DS as vile, intense and widespread as with SP! The shear hatred being spewed is just off the charts. And she’s not even holding any office now!
bernzright777 on March 13, 2010 at 3:19 PM
Its related to why they hate Dick Cheney much more than they hated George Bush. Unlike Bush, Cheney and Palin did not start out rich. They got rich outside the Left’s approved routes, i.e. the entertainment industry, banking, or lawyering. The Left hates the newly wealthy much more than old families like the Bushes or Kennedys.

Sarah connects with common people. She is honest and is a fantastic example of what people can achieve if they set their mind to it. She scares the left because she inspires so much passion in people. She is capable of moving people.

I don’t think that the country is quite ready to admit the truth, which is what Ferarro innocently pointed out in an innocuous talk and ended up being banged up over: People voted for Obama due, in large part, over white guilt.

He went on to say — and if you can prove it, we can split the royalties. So I said, stop pulling my leg. Horrible thought. But he came again — I really wrote it, the wording was similar. I said I believe you probably heavily edited it. He said — I wrote it. I said — why would I believe you, you’re a liar.
He had no answer to that. Just looked at me. Then he turned and walked off, and said again his bit about my proving it and splitting the proceeds.

I think if the idiot Kathy Griffin tried to push Sarah Palin down a flight of stairs, she would probably get her ass kicked by Palin just for the effort. Griffin’s c**t like mouth has made her wealthy by she has really accomplished little save for the demeaning of others. Palin on the other hand has accomplished much as a PTA mother. Obama by proxy… Brilliant.
That’s is exactly right.
And as the mask continues to be slowly ripped off of Obama, revealing the malignant, narcissistic Marxist that he has always been (no surprise to readers of Stanley Fish, et al), Sarah slowly builds her credentials, one brick at a time.
Eventually, the two trajectories will cross. Obama will become the Democratic albatross that Louise Slaughter could beat for the nomination. Sarah will have a record of pointing out the folly of the Marxist-in-chief while contrasting it with her own approach – all easily accessible on her facebook page.
She will be ready for battle in 2011 and will be

But that means I also don’t buy blogger tales about Obama, either.

The fact that she really does have “common sense” values and solutions is attractive. Probably her most attractive trait of all is her willingness to fight and say what needs to be said. Everything else about her is icing on the cake.

That is some fancy extrapolating of an Alaskan conservative as identical to a Internationalist Marxist. But like AGW theory, the timing is off. She was mass slandered before anyone knew what her voice sounded like, or what her life narrative was. The Targeting of Sarah Palin is not explainable by disappointment in Obama 18 months later. Sorry. Her immunity to the fiercest attacks was what confirmed her as the Chosen Obama destroyer, and the Obama gang sensed she was their nemisis way back then.
jimw on March 13, 2010 at 3:31 PM
I agree. That aspect of her I do relate to, frankly. I also found her to be tremendously appealing when she was probably the most vulnerable, when she resigned.
I related a lot then, too. I could easily picture myself needing to back off, take a deep breath, and not matching the “guy” version, where you never let anyone see your insecurities.
Her emotions showed. She’s not a robot.
AnninCA on March 13, 2010 at 3:33 PM

Sarah is the heart of America.
All of the slurs and insults that Sarah has endured, I have heard myself. As an ordinary American I can only say that, “This is my world.”
Obama is failure, but he was meant to be. Pelosi and Reid never cared about him. He was simply a tool for their use.
This is Pelosi’s game. Listen to what she says.
Cody1991 on March 13, 2010 at 3:46 PM
Expanding my thoughts on William Amon’s post, I have tinkered a lot here with the differences between women and men.
So much focus is on how women get attacked in politics. Not a lot has been focused on how women truly differ.
Women, by cultural training, I think, are often very content when we see our efforts come to fruition without the usual back-slapping/credit/ego-puffing.
So far, I see Sarah totally dictating the messages from the GOP. I see the GOP regular types denying that. I see the left attack that. And I see her completely being successful.
In my own opinion?
That’s actual real success.

Another part of the anger is that the left’s core ideology is built on the idea that most of what America has done over the past 223 years basically sucks, and the people who support what America as done suck, too.
But as the bile aimed at the Tea Partiers during the past year has shown, you really don’t get very far with the swing voters by telling them that it’s not just Politician X, Y or Z who is an evil, racist, homophobe, bigoted fundamentalist, etc. It didn’t even work for Jimmy Carter, when he couched his anger at the public in the much calmer terms of the (Chris Matthews-helmed) “Malaise” speech.
They’ve got to have a specific target to demonize, because negative campaigning has to be the base on which any political effort to get their agenda passed is set on — the alternative is to revert to the bitter “Jesusland” attacks the left spouted in the wake of the Bush win over Kerry in 2004. With no Republican in any position of power in Washington, and the current GOP leadership basically as bland as baby food, Palin is the target of choice when it comes to politicians, amplified by the fact that in their moral superiority, the idea that the first woman president might be a conservative Republican drives the left up a wall, in the same way the left in Britain went wild 30 years ago over Margaret Thatcher becoming that nation’s first female prime minister.
jon1979 on March 13, 2010 at 4:04 PM
Isn’t it interesting that the left will belittle one conservative woman for her good looks, and fault another for being (in their eyes) ugly? Anyone remember Katharine Harris?

Hmmm*
Hadn’t even thought of that one.
AnninCA on March 13, 2010 at 4:12 PM
Here is my take on the basis of Palin Derangement Syndrome:
1) Do you remember in 1976 that Moslems staged protests in NYC and elsewhere when a movie about Mohammad, Messenger of God was unveiled that they claimed defiled Mohammad and the religion of Islam? Moslems claim that no film can be allowed to depict him on-screen or allow his voice to be heard. Anybody who does not comply with this tenet of Muslim law will be subject to the wrath of his followers.
Similarly anyone who directly casts aspersions on Barack Hussein Obama, otherwise knows as the Messiah or the Anointed One, will receive similiar contempt and scorn from his Fascist followers and future punishment that they will pursue religiously.
Sarah Palin is an affront to their “God” and insulted and mocked him in a most outrageous fashion in her convention speech and several times thereafter. She cannot be allowed to go unpunished from such an act of political blasphemy. Thus we have an unremitting religiosity that keeps PDS alive and well.
2) Palin is also a threat to the billion dollar abortion industry and as it is a huge donor to the Democratic party a huge threat to Democratic fundraising. And as someone also pointed out there are billions and billions of dollars of profit hanging in the balance for Obama supporters with the passage of cap and trade. Sarah Palin, as we know is four-square against AGW and cap and trade. So there definitely is a financial basis to PDS as well.
3)And then we have a purely selfish basis for PDS-Beltway politicos, elitists, pundits, staffers, lobbyists, operatives, entrenched interests etc. who like the system the way it is and feel threatened by Sarah Palin, realizing she cleaned up Alaska and made it less corrupt and more transparent when she was governor. PDS therefore becomes a product of enlightened self-interest and self-preservation.
4)And PDS is a deliberate political or propaganda tool used by the Obama war room and the MSM to keep its followers in line and to energize the base when you feel it is flagging or losing interest. And in bringing this tool out of their bag of tricks the Democratic Party is admitting that Palin is not as inconsequential or politically insignificant as they make her out to be. And as a by-product of PDS it hopes to convince GOP members that Palin is too damaged to become a viable candidate for the presidency in 2012 and to marginalize her from potential GOP supporters.
And finally of course PDS is a tool to keep Obama in power and his radical agenda forging ahead to transform America.

The spoiled brats of the left love to play the role of the cheating husband – one who spends his every moment home accusing his wife of cheating. The fear and guilt eat at them so viciously that only scapegoating others will allow them a moment’s peace.

First of all, Big Love is a show about religious people that has always been over-the-top stupid. It’s basically a liberal version of religion the same way 24 is a liberal version of terrorism. It’s basically pretty stupid in a very entertaining sort of way.
At least until this season. Both shows have sucked this year but Big Love sucked big time. This season was an absolute disaster. From Alby’s gay affair that ended exactly how any idiot could have seen coming a mile away, to the Mexico fiasco, to the JJ incoherant egg story… to everything. What a total waste of Sissy Spacek. I still have no clue what her part was about.
I didn’t bother reading the review, but Palin may have been thrown in due to one particularly stupid plot line. The casino that Barb and Bill co-own was the victim of a bomb threat by “evangelicals”. Who were all in a meeting with Sissy Spacek in Scotland. Or something.
Bill was in Mexico trying trying to find his dumb son, who had gone there, after kissing Margene, with his demented parents who were trying to buy birds for smuggling back into the States but were captured by the Greene’s who were going to execute them after a trial…. oh, nevermind.

I think that’s why the public polls low on both parties. It’s the same on both sides.
And most real people aren’t interested in the hair-splitting going on between the far-right and far-left.
I personally think that the majority of voters are absolutely fed up with both far-right and far-left.
It’s as though partisanship is some kind of morality story.
No, the far-right and far-left are predictable. They can’t get anything really accomplished because they are both so darn radical, and they care a lot more about their precious principles than about real people.
These are people in real life whose closest relatives avoid them, even at holidays.
And they are, unfortunately, controlling the conversation.
Meanwhile, back in real life, regular people who are sometimes liberal, sometimes conservative, etc., are totally about to reject BOTH sides.
We’re just so done with the extremists.
Enuf already.

OK, now don’t make fun of me. Do you really post from the Blue Ridge mountain area? Where this type of hunting is truly common?

Superb analysis, superbly written, especially this paragraph:

I just never even met too many people in rural Arkansas who cooked wild boar. That’s why I asked.

Have you ever listened to Barry’s street slang?
I find it offensive that a president should ever resort to such cheap pandering. I guess, your boy Barry, can pass this bull$hiite off without notice.
Not so.
When I hear the President of this great country speaking I want to hear him speaking to ALL people of this country – not his ‘homies’ hanging out on the South Side of Chicago.
Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.
But that’s all Barry’s got. Samo-samo- crap.

I bet you really pack them in on your national speaking tours. Gonna be in Ohio any time soon? I can’t wait to hear you.

That’s fine. You’re mostly very fair to her and that’s appreciated. ;)

It’s kind of you to portray the deranged left as having the depth for introspection, but I’m not certain it’s the case. My experiences with the lefties (and there’s more than a few here in Specterland) is that they don’t think much at all. They emote. Their fever or furor come straight from the gut. Any move to unseat a “fact” with the facts causes some sort of mental dissonance resulting what is in effect a mental “blue screen of death”. My daughter, wife and I have taken to calling it the “Philly Stare”. Truly a sight to behold.

Great article, Doc. Unfortunately I clicked on the link that the Palin-bashing quote came from only to discover it was Herc over at It-Ain’t-Cool-News who said it. I used to enjoy his commentary, but he’s been getting way too political over there lately and it’s obvious he has no clue what he’s talking about. Unless of course your idea of enlightened thinking is the Daily Kos/MSDNC crowd.
OT: I’d just like to say I’m thrilled to see that Green Zone is a box office disaster. It’ll open with 15 mil this weekend and cost 100 mil to make. Not surprisingly, Universal(part of the GE/NBC conglomerate) is behind it.
Doughboy on March 13, 2010 at 4:55 PM
Palin reminds the left of Obama?
Palin was right about global warming not being man made, Obama just banned drilling for another three years and still clings to the green jobs dogmas while covering up the Spanish results of their green efforts-about 4 jobs lost for every green job created, Lindsey Graham are you paying attention?
Palin delivers fact based research and Obama delivers the Bullshit Bingo game — http://www.poorandstupid.com/2010_02_28_chronArchive.asp#4299381096058459131
The left really wants to call her full of @@@@ but know the rest of the country knows that she is right, no one can refute her “Death Panel” analysis. Palin’s lack of experience? comparable to Obama? That’s a stretch, at least she knows how to deliver the oil and take out the corruptocrats of whatever political persuasion.

This is for Doc Zero.
I’m listening to your discussions with Rusty.
You have the same gift as Rush.
When I read your posts and now listen to you my reaction is the same as others who have said, “Wow! That’s what I have been thinking and saying to others!” The difference is that you do it so well.
Please keep going, John. We’re not all as gifted as you, but we’re on the right track. You, Rush and Levin are teachers. It’s all in delivering the message, and there are millions out here who are trying to educate our neighbors.

It does seem funny that the smarmy and dishonest adulterer Golden boy escapes any scrutiny let alone ridicule or derision by the Lame Stream Media. He was right about 2 Americas after all, perhaps?

Whipping boy comes to mind… Cause the prince must not be spanked. Only, magnified by the HATE they carry (the left loves to hate it seems).

Love to see the look on Kathy’s face if she had to be somewhere with Sarah… Like a scared rabbit.
RalphyBoy on March 13, 2010 at 5:14 PM
I believe you are over-thinking it:
Certain fads or issues define you as “progressive” or “liberal” or “caring”; hating Sarah Palin is part of the current certification.
These people are not bothered by some secret “guilt” regarding loving their BFF Obama.
They may turn on him, but they will never go through a guilt phase.
mockmook on March 13, 2010 at 5:14 PM
I think I may have shut up the anti-SP zealots in my office. I recounted the story of how John Edwards gathered his advisers together to ask them how he could benefit politically from his son’s death. I then said “Say what you want about Sarah Palin, but when it comes to a politician, I’ll take stupid over evil any day.”
Kafir on March 13, 2010 at 5:15 PM
Michelle Obama IS good looking, when compared to the rest of their crowd. In a world where a “2″ is considered hot, a “4″ is smoking.
As for Sarah’s looks, they can’t see her through their bloodshot, squinted eyes. They just infer her looks through her evil, capitalist world-view.
Squiggy on March 13, 2010 at 5:15 PM
Ted Kennedy wrote a letter to Andropov offering to help the Soviet Union defeat Reagan’s efforts to build up the nuclear deterrent in Europe. Obama announced an end to the missile defense shield plan, initiated by the Bush Administration, on the 70th Anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland. There is an uncanny resemblance between the two now that you say it.

In psychology, they call that projection. I too had noticed the liberal bend for a rather lopsided view of reality.Of course, now everything had become clear. Obama Akbar, indeed!
