Stupak: Dems told me they want to fund abortions because more kids mean higher health-care costs; Update: Waxman?
posted at 4:37 pm on March 12, 2010 by Allahpundit
I don’t quite believe it, although that’s partly because I don’t want to believe it. It’s the abortion equivalent of death panels, essentially. It’s so sinister, and so perfectly matches the most ogrish caricatures of the pro-choice left, that it’s almost too bad to check. It’d be like Ron Paul claiming that pro-war Republicans told him to vote for Iraq because they were dying to get their hands on all that oil. They simply can’t be this cold-blooded.
Well, actually … sure they can. But would they cop to it?
Sitting in an airport, on his way home to Michigan, Rep. Bart Stupak, a pro-life Democrat, is chagrined. “They’re ignoring me,” he says, in a phone interview with National Review Online. “That’s their strategy now. The House Democratic leaders think they have the votes to pass the Senate’s health-care bill without us. At this point, there is no doubt that they’ve been able to peel off one or two of my twelve. And even if they don’t have the votes, it’s been made clear to us that they won’t insert our language on the abortion issue.”…
What are Democratic leaders saying? “If you pass the Stupak amendment, more children will be born, and therefore it will cost us millions more. That’s one of the arguments I’ve been hearing,” Stupak says. “Money is their hang-up. Is this how we now value life in America? If money is the issue — come on, we can find room in the budget. This is life we’re talking about.”
If Obamacare passes, Stupak says, it could signal the end of any meaningful role for pro-life Democrats within their own party. “It would be very, very hard for someone who is a right-to-life Democrat to run for office,” he says. “I won’t leave the party. I’m more comfortable here and still believe in a role within it for the right-to-life cause, but this bill will make being a pro-life Democrat much more difficult. They don’t even want to debate this issue. We’ll probably have to wait until the Republicans take back the majority to fix this.”
Let’s think about this. Imagine you’re a pro-choice Democrat. You know Stupak is passionately opposed to funding abortion. You know he’s willing to chat with any conservative media outlet that’ll have him. You also know that Pelosi’s coalition is extremely fragile. Knowing all that, why would you hand him a political grenade this explosive? You’re not going to flip him; you know he’s going to run to NRO or Fox News to tell them what you said; and you know that it’s going to electrify opposition to the bill. Now imagine that you’re Stupak. You’ve been cut out of negotiations. Your bloc is fracturing. You need something to put it back together. Tossing this out there will have every anti-abortion advocacy group in America pounding on the doors of pro-life Dems on Monday to make sure they vote the right way. I don’t want to call the guy a liar — he’s been admirably constant under incredible pressure — but given the scenario I’ve presented, which is more likely to be true? That some sub-moronic pro-choicer really said this to him or that he’s claiming they did to resuscitate opposition to Reid’s bill? Can he give us the name, at least, of one of the Democrats who said it? (Prime suspect!)
For what it’s worth, Open Left claims there are now at least four members of the Stupak bloc who are suddenly undecided on the bill. Ace says he heard a report on Fox News earlier that Pelosi was … four votes short. Gulp.
Update: Another possible reason for skepticism: Universal health care may mean fewer abortions.
Update: Via Philip Klein, a snippet from a radio interview Stupak gave this morning. He says Waxman told him “we want to pay for abortions,” but he doesn’t give a reason. As far as I know, though, Waxman and Hoyer are the two Democrats in the leadership he’s been dealing with the most, so if someone really did say this, it’s likely one of them. And Waxman’s considerably further left than Hoyer is.

The number one priority is power for them. They really do not care about the enviroment. Their constant lies in that regard should tell you something else is at work. It is just a weapon to attack the industrial west.
They are ‘special’ and just like the Soviets had special stores for the party elite, they will retain their perks. Al Gore the Green High Priest with his mansion and barrels of cash is a good example of this. One rule for them and another for the little people.

Another thing I don’t get is the MSM and its stinking backing of the leftist government now and they don’t even hide it. When They destroy the constitution won’t the media worry about the gov’t telling them what to print and air? Even determined leftists media would balk at the gov’t telling them what to publish? Even Castro and Chavez had to shut down his opposition media so he would not have roadblocks to his agenda. Sometimes I wish it was back in the 50′s life seemed so simple back then.

If health cost are going to go down, what difference would it make.
If they know they are lying through there teeth about cost going down, that prices are going up, not just a bit, but skyrocket high, then it makes a difference. Especially when it becomes rationed basic medical care.
Franklyn on March 12, 2010 at 7:42 PM
That would only be true if the kids paying for health care in the future had a school drop out rate of 30%-50%…Oh, wait.

Don’t you blind dupes get it? What’s the common denominator here? They are EVIL, as in Godless, atheistic, amoral EVIL PEOPLE. They are united in their opposition to what is truly good. They make deals with their OWN kind. But if you are not part of the light of Christ, you have nothing to stand on against them. It won’t be you taking on this power of darkness… they will simply roll right over you. Only Christ’s power as revealed in the scripture you find so out of date will turn things around.
Now go ahead and flame me, but it’s the truth.

There’s a simple way to find out. Stupak could simply name names. After all, any leader of any party who would say such an outrageous thing deserves to be exposed.
What do you think the chances are Stupak will do that? Hint: don’t hold your breath.

Reconciliation is a distraction, at this point. What part of, “When the senate bill passes the house, it will be signed into law.” do these idiots not understand?
Reconciliation–or stopping it–is critically important. But, if Reid knows he doesn’t have the votes for it…well tough toenails. They don’t need it once it passes the house. Game. Set. Match.
They (senate)can get lots of signatures (wink, wink, nod, nod)on a promise to reconcile. Means nuttin. And when they include the “carrot” for these dems of the Sallie Mae schtick???
It’s truly evil, but it’s enough to make a pro-life dem throw its principles (such as they are)to the wind.
Hope this isn’t too redundant of other posts. Have been out with clients all day.

Paul shared Plato’s dualism and contempt for the world of the senses in favor of the world of the ideal. In both writers, man can not know God until freed from his fleshy senses.
Paul’s famous verse on love in Corinthians reads similar to Plato’s writing on the same topic in the Symposium.

Anyone who doubts Stupak’s claim has no idea what the true battle is about – this is the Culture of Death. It goes way beyond Margaret Sanger but that is a good place to start. We are sliding into a eugenic nightmare and Obamacare will put these horrors out in the open. Maybe sunlight will be the disinfectant but by that time I doubt we’ll have a “republic” anymore. It will be too late.

Constitutional protection for life-from-conception would require much greater government intrusion into the family than the current abortion laws. Perhaps it would be the right thing to do but it would be a big government project to be effective at protecting all unborn life.

How in the name of God have we gotten to the point where we will allow these rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth-evil people to be the ones who will literally wield the power of life and death over everyone of us, born and unborn?
Because the demon of MURDER, who has been feasting and growing strong on the blood of 48 million unborn and the misery of their parents, is now coming for us, riding on the backs of BerriNancy&Harry, the unholy three.
FAST & PRAY & FIGHT & ASK the Lord to forgive us for forgetting the preborn for all of these years. Where were the tea parties and town halls for them? In fact, the tea parties and town halls don’t even talk about them now. I have not seen one sign acknowledging the 48 million dead or demanding an end to the slaughter at any march or tea party.
If “We Want Our Country Back” means a return to life before obama, but with abortion, we can forget it. The evil that brought us obama IS the same evil that brought us abortion. And it will continue to grow; berri and obamacare are only another step down the cliffside, until we remove abortion root and branch to, “Get Our Country Back, Clean”.
This is why, imo, we cannot prevail, because how can God be with us if we don’t defend his little ones? And without God, we are not going to win against the devil, who is the one in charge of the monster in the White House and the rest of the filthy cabal.
How eerie or perhaps the word is prophetic, that the killing of the unborn is the thing most lusted after by the Left, and even more horrific, something they hope to make us accomplices to w/ obamacare. These people are the ultimate violators. They make a garden variety rape look like a picnic in the park.
The result that they are after is that participation in paying for abortion will surely kill consciences and forge the chains around us in unbreakable links.
I’ve said this before, sorry if you’ve read a variation previously, but I think this is a foundational flaw in our attack. Our victory is tied to our righteousness in Christ, without Him we can do nothing.
We are now afraid for ourselves, that we will be helpless and under the control of very evil men, which is much like the infants, left for a full generation now, to the killing hands of the abortionist, no?
Ask not for whom the bell tolls.

Stay strong, TL, I’m there with you in prayer and fasting. The left have revealed their true colors after all these years of having to hide themselves from us: they have come out into the open and revealed their wickedness to all the world. Their sole goal, as revealed in healthcare, in cap ‘n trade, global warming, is death. That is it; they simply cannot bear to be in the presence of life, and so must do all in their power to try to eliminate it.
But they will fail, because life always wins; rather, life has already won. Death is swallowed up in victory.
Fallen Sparrow on March 12, 2010 at 10:30 PM
This is not an exaggeration. I lived in Canada under their socialized medical system and neonatologists often pressured parents with “defective” babies to abort them due to the cost to the system. I know it happens here to a degree, but the excuse here has not been the “burden” on the system.

Liberals have called marriage rape, child molestation not rape rape, said some people should die to save the environment, go to jail for expressing an opinion about a foreign leader, want to tax soda and ban salt to force their food choices on us.
I can believe Stupak’s claim with great credulity.

I wouldn’t be so surprised if this kind of comment is true. You’d be astonished at some of the incredible crap I’ve heard from liberals in unguarded moments. Even when I was on staff with a city council- so this means actual politicians and their staff.
Usually it was the environmentalists who made the most callus comments. I remember once when there were a rash of fatal cougar attacks in California that one fellow suggested that a few deaths was a small price to pay for the revival of the cougar population as cougars are “good for the earth” while “humans are harmful”.

What Stupak’s saying doesn’t seem at all unbelievable.
Many of these congress critters receive funding and campaign support from pro-abortion groups, and being amoral politicians, it’s simply a matter of maintaining power. No surprise that they adopt the rhetoric of those groups in the heat of battle.
Add to that a president who vigorously opposed a late-term abortion ban in the Illinois senate, and whose only (supposed) contribution to the Harvard Law Review was on the subject of fetal death.
Stupak may be telling tales out of school, but can anyone but the naive believe that this type of nitty-gritty talk doesn’t happen in the current Congress of the United States?

American women can already get free healthcare during pregnancy. Prenatal Chip allows a single woman to make 2000/month. The quote I got from my doctor was “pretty much everyone could qualify for medicaid while pregnant, they just don’t know it.”
So the argument that women decide to have abortions based on lack of healthcare options is just idiotic. Of course, planned parenthood doesn’t tell women they qualify for these programs. If they go there instead of a real doctor I guess I could see why they would be misled. Regardless, the answer is not a generalized takeover of healthcare.

Just because it makes you uncomfortable to be associated with “those people” like Waxman, doesn’t mean you aren’t.
Vera on March 13, 2010 at 9:25 AM
There is something very familiar about this story…
I recall Pelosi made some comment during the Porkulus debates, when there was a $200M earmark for condoms – she made some comment that it is cheaper to pay for the condoms then the health care in the long run.
Going to look for it now.
sarainitaly on March 13, 2010 at 11:12 AM
When ABC’s George Stephanopolous asked Pelosi to explain how birth control helps the economy, here’s what the speaker said: “The family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now, and part of what we do for children’s health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those — one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.”
Video of Neil Cavuto talking about this last January:
http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/2009/01/200-million-for-condoms.html
So…it sure seems as though the Dems are thinking in terms of controlling population, whether it by contraception or abortion, as a way to save states/federal money.

jeanie on March 13, 2010 at 11:47 AM
Yet they want millions of illegal immigrants to keep coming here and they want us to pay for their babies. There is so much internal contradiction within the Left on this issue it is ridiculous.
My view is it isn’t about the babies, or even about Planned Parenthood’s financial survival (though there is some of that, especially with Pelosi), it is about a liberal viewpoint that sexual license is the most important thing in life, and people should be able to have sex whenever and wherever and with whom or what they wish, with no consequences, financial or moral. If you get pregnant, or get AIDS or an STD, that’s OK, we will pay to get it “fixed” for you so you don’t have to change your lifestyle.
Their ultimate goal is a totalitarian system of government and business, but individuals can have all the sex and drugs and entertainment they want so they won’t notice the loss of freedom.

I wouldn’t doubt that they are discussing the ramifications of no abortions. A lot of abortions are performed in high-risk pregnancies, which do lead to more birth defects, which drive up neo-natal care and ongoing health costs.
Someone is bound to be discussing that reality.

That smacks of conspiracy thinking, to me. I simply don’t buy that.
AnninCA on March 13, 2010 at 2:18 PM
Ann, you may think it smacks of conspiracy thinking, but PP was founded on just such thinking and many leftists have written about how sterilization/birthcontrol/abortion all reduce population and are thus a good thing.
Vera on March 13, 2010 at 2:40 PM
Well, we’ll have to agree to disagree. I believe giving women control over birthcontrol was the primary goal of Planned Parenthood.
Until the 1960′s, women were truly unable to do that.
AnninCA on March 13, 2010 at 2:53 PM
Ann, you can believe whatever you want to believe. That doesn’t change the established fact that PP was a racist organization started by a woman who openly supported and campaigned for eugenics.
Margaret Sanger – Founder of Planned Parenthood “. . .we prefer the policy of immediate sterilizarion, of making sure that parenthood is ‘ absolutely prohibited ‘ to the feeble-minded.” The Pivot of Civilization, p102
From A Plan for Peace”, Margaret Sanger was published in Birth Control Review (April 1932, pp. 107-108):
“apply a stern and rigid policy of sterilization and segregation to that grade of population whose progeny is tainted, or whose inheritance is such that objectionable traits may be transmitted to offspring.”
“to give certain dysgenic groups in our population their choice of segregation or sterilization.”
From An Essay on the Principle of Population
“All children born, beyond what would be required to keep up the population to a desired level, must necessarily perish, unless room is made for them by the deaths of grown persons. We should facilitate, instead of foolishly and vainly endeavoring to impede, the operations of nature in producing this mortality.”

I will never forget this interview I saw-I think it was conducted by Mike Wallace sometime in the 1960′s-given by former followers of Margaret Sanger who supported her efforts to come up with a “pill” to prevent mothers who had borne too many children to care for from having more children, but now were horrified that the “pill” was being exploited by young women to have “promiscuous” sex without having to face the consequences.
It appeared that these women were so naive or had such noble intentions to better the lives of mothers they had not even conceived that single women would make such of use a product designed only for married women.
And isn’t it interesting that just keeping it just in the realm of the “birth control pill” and not Margaret Sanger’s other activities that Sanger, Sarah Palin and many pro-life conservatives now share the same viewpoint about the benefits of women and young single women taking birth control pills to plan how large a family they want to raise or to prevent them from getting pregnant.

How is it “conspiracy thinking” when they have said it?
sarainitaly on March 13, 2010 at 5:58 PM
This is the same party that coddles convicted murderers, rapists and thieves.
How much do they cost, Democrats?
Oh yeah, I guess there’s a chance convicted felons will get the vote.
Since fetuses won’t, they’re disposable.
Just another reason to hate Democrats.

Anninca – throwing stuff on the wall until something sticks. Just because you think something to be true doesn’t mean IT IS. Sheesh. Why don’t libs ever grow up?
FWIW – If PP’s mission was to “free” women from the “burden” of birthing their own babies, and not population control (currently 70-80% of PP clinics are in minorty neighborhoods) and the eugenist policies of Margaret Sanger, then why have the never disavowed Sanger’s deplorable statements and beliefs? Instead they give out awards IN HER NAME to people who further their cause.

This whole thing is such a fiasco.

Mandatory abortions because of enforced limits on the number of children. ObaMao.
DANEgerus on March 14, 2010 at 2:18 PM
If I was Stupak, I would get all of the people in his group together and talk to them to make sure they were still against the bill. Then I would tell Nancy that all of his group was willing to vote for the bill. When the vote came up, we would all vote against it and kill it outright.

That’s a great plan – abort future taxpayers, who would pay into this massive deficit-generating monstrosity. Yeah, let’s wind up like the Euros, having to import people to do everything. Oh, wait, that’s already started.
