Video: House Dems cancel committee meetings, go behind closed doors for ObamaCare
posted at 2:00 pm on March 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Well, as Glenn Reynolds likes to say, they told me that if I voted for John McCain, we’d get nothing but backroom deals on Capitol Hill … and they were right! Faced with caucus members who aren’t responding to the normal arm-twisting, Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer abruptly canceled scheduled committee hearings to call the party leadership into closed-door conference to plot strategy and tactics. That left Fox News with no one to discuss the events except Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), who also covered the Eric Massa controversy:
Apparently, the White House is trying to put an end to the very dealmaking Pelosi has decided to push in her off-line meetings — and Democrats resent Obama’s “grandstanding” on clean government principles:
The White House is pushing to strip out a number of “sweetheart” deals in the Senate bill as Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that Democrats are unlikely to make the March 18 deadline set by President Obama for passage, an indication the House speaker doesn’t have the votes to pass it. …
Pelosi had ordered committee chairmen to postpone their hearings Thursday so lawmakers could finish backroom negotiations.
Democratic leaders insisted a deal is near, despite several unanswered questions, whether it’s expanding Medicaid or Medicare, tax-funded abortion service, special kickbacks for resistant lawmakers or the untallied costs.
Obama already has moved to eliminate a couple of special deals in the Senate bill that turned off voters when they became public, including extra Medicaid funding for Nebraska — derided by critics as the “cornhusker kickback” and Medicare coverage for residents of Libby, Mont., who suffer from asbestos-related illnesses because of a now-closed mining operation.
“Not helpful” is how one senior congressional Democratic aide called the effort.
“This is totally not necessary,” the aide said. “We’re trying to put together a bill, while they’re just exposing more sausage-making.”
“I mean, give me a break,” the aide continued. “This is just grandstanding. We’re trying to put together a bill, while the White House plays to the good government crowd.”
Gee, would that be the same “open, honest government” that Obama, Reid, and Pelosi pledged in the 2008 campaign? Glad to hear Democrats confirm that they were just “grandstanding” at that time. We had already surmised it, of course, but it’s good to get confirmation.
Pelosi has insisted that she has the votes to pass it, but the sudden dive behind closed doors suggests otherwise. If they had the votes, they’d produce the bill and schedule the roll-call vote.

Should we be shocked? These are the people who LITERALLY changed the locks to keep Republicans out of closed door Obamacare meetings, and who’s leader Pelosi just said the other day that the reason we need to pass the bill is so that we can all see what’s in it.

B-b-b-b-but the President apologized and p-p-p-p-promised.
Ever wonder if the rest of the world looks at all of the fake apologies and promises that The One makes to us, thinks of the ones he’s made to them and says “hey, wait a minute…”?

This despite the fact that last night, she was trumpeting about all over the landscape how she had the votes needed and this horrible bill that virtually no one wants was soon to be passed and blah blah blah.
And like I said earlier, I think everyone has had more than enough of this lying, despicable, vile woman and her power-mongering ways!

Speaking of corruption…
The FBI and Department of Justice opened an investigation. However, the Obama Justice Department, while noting that ACORN had engaged in “questionable hiring and training practices,” closed down the investigation in March 2009, claiming ACORN broke no laws.

I think a lot of Dems are too attached to their jobs to vote for this. If they vote for this bill, as unpopular as it is, they are assuring themselves a lot of free time after November. They have no principles, they are all about being reelected. I think Obamacare is about to go down in flames.

Would you, or anyone, buy anything from her? On health care, she ripped the system off more than anyone. This investigation has not, yet, begun, due to media still stuck in Obama’s pants. Look into how much MO got paid, for ‘consulting’, read ripping off, the h/c system.
Schadenfreude on March 11, 2010 at 2:14 PM
I just had a scary (I think) thought: What if, by some fashion, the Dems manage to crib together enough to pass the Senate bill as is. Obama can sign it, and it will be law, reconciliation or no. Bribes, kickbacks, warts and all.
But, with the ‘grandstanding’ mentioned above, consider this: Barry O wants certain things, doesn’t want others, some are deal breakers and some not. So with the Nebraska and other deals in the Senate bill, which anyone who has been awake at all in the last couple of months knows the American people HATE, might Obama actually veto it?
If he does, there is no way they’ll get an override on it. Plus, it gives him, at least him personally, an example to trot out how he’s all for stopping wasteful spending. Then he can fully toss the entire Dem party right under that bus, berate them for playing partisan games, and gain himself a whole ton of possible waffling moderate support for 2012.
Of course, no health care reform at all costs him a lot of the hard left base. But honestly, how much of that hard left will actually abandon him when staring at that ballot on election day?

Yes, I know he’s hung up on this, and all. But what would be a bigger stroke to that ego, getting the Socialist Holy Grail, or a calculated political stance to get a large majority of the vote for a second term? I know that’s a long shot, and all, but still…
JamesLee on March 11, 2010 at 2:27 PM
The message in the Democrat meetings is, “the political decimation caused by not passing a health care bill (proof of Democrat impotence) will be even worse than the decimation caused by passing something poorly designed. If we pass something, we can always fix it later. If we don’t pass anything, there’s nothing to fix later.”

Barry has already said that getting the Socialist Holy Grail is worth being a one-term president for. Remember, his objective is power and control over the population of the U.S. Once he gets that in place, it doesn’t matter if he wins a second term — he, or his puppetmasters, can make most of us dance to any tune he cares to play whether or not he holds an actual elective office.
