Gibbs: What’s wrong with demagoging the Supreme Court during the State of the Union?

posted at 6:35 pm on March 11, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via Breitbart. “I don’t know why they’d feel uncomfortable,” muses Gibbsy vis-a-vis The One lying shamelessly about a Court decision during a nationally televised speech while oafish Democrats surrounding the justices exploded in in-your-face applause. And no wonder: In the aftermath, our trusty media was more concerned about Alito’s alleged breach of etiquette in silently mouthing words than in what the Lamb of God actually said from the podium. Even here, true to form, they fail to press Gibbs on the fact that Obama lied.

Jan Crawford’s had enough:

For the life of me, I just don’t get why the White House continues to try to pick a fight with the Supreme Court. I’ve suggested before that perhaps it’s a sign President Obama intends to tap an outsider when John Paul Stevens retires, so he can beat the drum that the Court is out of touch with everyday Americans.

But after Chief Justice John Roberts made some entirely reasonable remarks yesterday — and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs just had to respond — it’s now getting ridiculous.

Whether the White House has a short-term or long-term strategy or no strategy at all, it’s flat-out absurd and ill-advised for the administration to think it should always have the last word. It’s like my 6-year-old: “I don’t LIKE your idea. I like MY idea.”

Is it ill-advised? The One needs dragons to slay ahead of November to goose his base and remind the public that he’s still all about “changing Washington” or whatever. That was the point of the clumsy “fatcat bankers” populist pandering a few months ago and that’s the point of picking a fight with a right-wing Court that came down on the side of corporations in a campaign-finance case. It’s an exceedingly easy, exceedingly cheap way to score points, all the more so because the justices can’t really punch back. (Well, except Scalia.) More demagoguery, please.

Blowback

SC.Charlie on March 11, 2010 at 6:39 PM

Dr Krauthammer last night on the panel recommended 9 empty seats right in the front row next State of the Union. Said although they disagree on cases they are collegial and should get together and agree no matter who is in power you don’t humiliate or criticize them to their faces and whoop and holler when protocol says they have to remain seated and be quiet. Amen.

Marcus on March 11, 2010 at 6:40 PM

And, true to form, even here they fail to press Gibbs on the fact that Obama lied.

According to version 31.223.87 of the official rules and amendments of Affirmative Action, no Precedent can lie. He can only be viciously misled by the racist American culture and the imposition of bigoted Western civilization that our nasty, stupid Founders were so fond of.

Give The Precedent another Nobel prize to cheer him up. Let him have Literature, this time.

He won.

That means he can do whatever the hell he wants. He can encourage “deeming bills voted upon.” He can smear and besmirch ANYONE and that means ANYONE who disagrees with him. You don’t get to disagree with the Won.

He WON. He’s a god now. We’re all supposed to bow down and be happy with what he gives us… and that goes for Congress and the SCOTUS too.

Come on. Where have you been?

I’ll grant that calling Obama “the Lamb of God” is richly ironic, but I object anyway. Not only is it offensive, but it doesn’t fit. That’s a title suggesting a sacrificial lamb, and Obama is anything but.

If Obama’s a one termer, Matthews, Friedman, Krugman and the rest of the remedial punditry will be pushing the meme that Obama sacrificed his legacy to try to bring about real change towards Social Justice or some such nonsense. They’ll couch his ineptitude and failure as self sacrifice on behalf of the downtrodden and the beatification will begin continue.

Here’s what I don’t understand.

McCain-Feingold is a very recent statute. Yet, everyone out there accepts the claim that the Supreme Court has set aside some kind of longstanding precedent in the Citizens United decision. It’s not — it’s brand new. And in its first real court test, the provision was struck down. Big whoop.

Of course, the abiding mystery remains as to why the Court didn’t pitch out the whole McCain-Feingold mess in the McConnell case, or for that matter, why on God’s earth George W. Bush signed that wretched bill in the first place. This is one case where I would have to agree with the bumper sticker that says, “I blame Bush.”

It’s just another example of amateurs in the White House. These people have no clue what being a President of the United States is all about. Obama thinks he’s President of the Democrats who live in the United States and can’t get beyond that.

I’m sure there is no one in the White House that knows and understands the history of the State of the Union address, when the Supreme Court started coming, and why. What protocol is for it, etc. They don’t call it the “State of the Union” for nothing. It’s not supposed to be tearing the union apart with partisan politics.

I’ll be so glad when November is over and we get some adults back in Congress. Then, perhaps, we can get the White House to act like adults, or work on that place in 2012.

Gibbs reminds me of wierdos in elementary school that put tacks on girls chairs, tied cats tails together, pulled wings off flies and other such repulsive activities: then laugh and giggle about it or point a finger and blame someone else for it.
The arrogant empty suit needs the dog s**t slapped out of him.

Demagogues have to demagogue. It’s built in; he doesn’t know how to do anything else.

Again with the snide laughter and the non-answers. Gibbs is a disgrace, and spends more time evading and arguing than he does answering questions. And his 80% figure was interesting– the question was

“do you support or oppose the recent ruling by the Supreme Court that says corporations and unions can spend as much money as they want to help political candidates win elections?”

If the question had been

“do you support or oppose the recent ruling by the Supreme court that says that the government can’t interfere with or punish organizations that wish to openly support a political candidate,”

the numbers would have been different.

Gibbs is just a horse’s a$$, isn’t he. I don’t know how he sleeps at night.

Probably biting a pillow.

Old Gibbsy justifies the decorum breach of the callow thug by claiming that 80% of the American people agree with him. Now we all understand how those poll questions misrepresented the thrust and rationale of the ruling, but I thought via the Mouth from the South that the WH doesn’t pay attention to polls. What about the huge percentage of the American people who reject ObaMaoScare in all of its incarnations?

Who is the bigger jerk: BHO or the Press Clown?
