Florida: Romney 52, Huckabee 21, Palin 18

posted at 7:19 pm on March 11, 2010 by Allahpundit

We’ve done a million posts about this three-way match-up but I don’t think we’ve done one yet about a key swing state.

Not what I would have predicted.

Florida’s the first really important stop on the GOP calendar that we’ve looked at, and Romney’s lead there is overwhelming. He gets 52% to 21% for Huckabee and 18% for Palin. It’s closer, but still a double digit advantage, in Colorado. There Romney gets 44% to 25% for Palin and 17% for Huckabee.

In each state Romney has a big advantage with both moderates and conservatives, although he is particularly strong at this point with the center of his party. In Florida he leads Huckabee by 28 with conservatives and has a 36 point advantage over both Huckabee and Palin with moderates. In Colorado he’s up 8 on Palin with conservatives, but leads her by 41 with moderates.

One particular source of strength for Romney at this very early stage is that he’s doing even better with senior citizens than the overall electorate. In Florida he’s up 47 with voters over 65 and in Colorado it’s a 21 point margin.

The same poll has Rubio up 33 points on Crist, which is right in line with other recent polls. The sample appears to skew a bit old — 52 percent of respondents are 46 to 65 and another 23 percent are over 65 — but that’s actually not far off from the age split in the 2008 Florida primary exit poll. The most shocking data set:

fl

The same poll has Rubio leading Crist 72/15 among conservatives, which sounds about right. The question: What on earth happened to Sarahcuda? Third in Florida, behind even Huckabee — among conservatives, no less — when the other tea-party darling is crushing the sitting governor in the same demographic? Part of this may be due to her greater name recognition; her flaws are well known compared to Mitt’s and Huck’s so they benefit temporarily from public ignorance. But even if that’s true, it means a good-sized chunk of primary voters are already sufficiently ill disposed towards her that they’re opting for Romney or Huckabee more or less sight unseen. Even with Mitt’s book tour and Huck’s Fox show, they don’t have remotely as high a profile as she does after landing a spot on the ticket, selling an enormous volume of books, and being covered around the clock by the media. And yet, somehow, she trails both of them. Advantage: Ziegler.

Exit question: Is there any way at all that Romney doesn’t run after a poll like this? All he needs is one early state win — New Hampshire or Michigan — to give him a little mo heading into Florida into 2012. In fact, he might end up thinking of Florida as his firewall: Even if a social con takes South Carolina, Mitt’s still got Miami ahead to kill his opponent’s momentum.

I’ve got her acceptance speech bookmarked. I like her politics, I like her principles, I like her family, I like her accent, I like the fact that she’s from a small town and proud of it, and I think she’s a total babe.

I also like Rush Limbaugh, a lot. Based on his politics, principles, raw brainpower, speaking ability and wit, he’d be a better president than anyone I can think of. But just like Palin, there’s no way in hell he’d ever be elected. I can say the same for a number of other very, very good people.

It’s not disrespectful to state a political reality.

…and a million like you. Again, fight it in the primaries. Get a truly conservative candidate…game, set, match.

We’ve let the other side select our candidate for us for too long (Operation Chaos was brilliant, but should have been a primary campaign).

Regardless, in hindsight…if I could take the “Wayback” machine…I’d cast my vote for McCain again in a heartbeat. But today? Real time? I am contributing to Hayworth’s campaign cuz’ I think it’s time for Johnny to get some serious front porch time.

But for me, staying home is not an option. We gots-ta pick from what wez got. Just don’t let the dems pick our candidate EVER AGAIN.

PrezHussein on March 11, 2010 at 9:01 PM

I hate anecdotal evidence, but in this case, I’ll provide some: I work in D.C. The VAST majority of….well, of the entire number of human beings I know (as friends, co-workers or just acquaintances) are on the left-side of the political spectrum, ranging from moderate-Democrat to kool-aid drinking Kossified nutroots.

The majority of them are EXTREMELY nervous about Mitt getting the nomination.

The person they’d love to see get the GOP nom? Sarah Palin. They do not view her as threat. And they have no reason to.

Vyce on March 11, 2010 at 8:04 PM

Before Romney, it was Jon Huntsman and apparently Obamites were so shaking with fear over him that they offered him an ambassadorship. Remember? Does anyone seriously think Jon Huntsman would have beaten Obama?

Fact is Obama people live in a bubble, bitter gun clingers is how they look at us, they have no respect and they think Romney will beat them because he’s an elitist white snob part of their crowd. But once the brasstacks, Romney will cave under pressure, Palin will not. They know that too subconsciously.

This is what will happen if Mittens gets the nomination.

The minute Mitten get the nomination the ads start running that Mittens is Pro-choice. The ads start running about Mittens religion. The LSM starts attacking Mittens for being pro-choice and for his religion. The LSM will do what they always do. The LSM will turn it into social issues.

The conservative base will stay home and there will be 4 fricken more years of Obama. The trashing will start again that you can’t win without the base and without conservative values.

But on a brighter side thank GOD will have over two years to get it right.

The LSM wants Romney because of religion and pro-choice.

You have been warned.

If you live in Florida could you tell me how 51% of Florida’s GOP conservative primary voters surveyed could give the thumbs up to Romney who is not a conservative and only 18% would give the thumbs up to Palin who is a conservative.

And is this poll completely bogus? After all only 492 GOP primary voters were surveyed.

You left off one ingredient:

I’ll do what I always do: bring a barf bag into the booth and pull the lever for the Republican, and the moderates will do what they almost always do: vote for the real Democrat rather than the lite version proposed by the GOP.

Kensington on March 11, 2010 at 9:11 PM

Romney will never be elected President. Too many folks remember his disaster of a governorship in Massachusetts.

He is the GOP’s version of John Edwards, the right’s “Breck Girl”. He’s as big a narcissist as Obama, and he will get his @ss handed to him in the primaries when all the rest of his baggage shows up.

heshtesh on March 11, 2010 at 9:18 PM

Personally, I think the GOP is torn between who they would LIKE to see win if they had their druthers, and who they think CAN win. Palin is probably the most popular person in the party, certainly more popular than Mittens. She is perceived as strong, principled, and charismatic by most of the base. But, for whatever reason, resignation, concerns about knowledge, electability, whatever, they don’t think she can pull it off and the other alternative, Huckster, is just….God help us. That leaves Mittens as the current default position. He is also off the radar right now. Few saw the disaster that was the Fox News interview and have forgotten the used car salesman persona he exudes. The will be reminded.

Palin has about a year or so to convince the electorate otherwise. If she can demonstrate a solid grasp of the issues and can get people past her early resignation, she will be unstoppable. If not…

AP is looking to fill in for Hugh Hewitt’s role as the “Do you know who this helps???? Romney!” deal.

Mitt still has major problems, like Romneycare.

Not being able to figure out his own tax returns and VC funding… plus his off-shore accounts started to be tax shelters and then complains about MA residents with off-shore accounts because he can’t tax them.

Then all the fees he instituted plus ‘closing tax loopholes’.

Nothing says ‘successful small businessman’ like multiple accounts in the Cayman Islands.

But I’m sure that all of that adds up to ‘advantage… ROMNEY!’

If that is what the GOP is going to offer, I’ll pass, thanks. A free spending, government expanding, tax enhancing, fee-charging Republican… is a functional Democrat. Sorry, no more Big Government Conservatives, I’ve had my fill for a lifetime.

Now if only we had ‘Chainsaw’ Al Dunlap around.

rob verdi on March 11, 2010 at 9:26 PM

Huck is out, Mitt is too because he is not a conservative and
Romneycare is his loadstone.

If Sarah runs, she’ll win the GOP nomination. She might pick Mitt or someone like him as Veep to unite the party behind her to get the establishment support. It will be 1980 all over again.

Florida has now got Rubio up 30% over Crist. Once Sarah is unleashed in FL, she will catapult past Romney just like Rubio has to Crist.

It’s very early still, but once Sarah’s inferno begins, it will torch Florida too.

And boy oh boy I hope they’ll love the 24/7 reality show that will be the Romney Boys, as well.

The point is, whoever emerges as the high profile Republican will get the 24/7 anal exam, and so will their family. No one will be spared, unless, perhaps, it will be unavoidably obvious to everyone that they don’t stand a chance of winning.

The LSM and Obama already have a large folder on Romney. They expected Romney to be McCain’s pick.

Tell me that the LSM is not treating Romney the same way they treated McCain?

People are worried about Palin running. Palin probably won’t even run but there is no reason for her to show her hand yet. Nobody else would this early out.

She can match her record against ANY other GOP politician and she by far is selfless, loves this country, and has proven she can bloody the Progs like no other.

Her ‘death panels’ Facebook was like cavalry general Buford at Gettysburg recognizing the opportunity and holding off the reb infantry until Reynold’s Corp arrived and from there they delayed Lee long enough for Meade to take the high ground.

The push for Obamacare by Obama, Pelosi and Reid will fail and will be the Dem’s Pickett’s Charge like Day 3 of the battle.

We like Sarah because she sounds the most like Reagan and she’s actually walked the walk.
This bullsh!t from the media always yapping about ‘Americans tired of the partisanship’ and all that rot. I mean, how freakin’ stupid is that statement??
You’re damn right I’m partisan or I wouldn’t bother voting. And I don’t want the democrats ‘gotten along with’. I want them destroyed. Because that’s what they will do to America and the traditional way of American life.

Lanceman on March 11, 2010 at 10:03 PM

The reality: MSMs are and will be against ANY republican, the dems are willing to lie, cheat and steal and that is another strike against the republican candidate. Therefore, whoever is nominated will have to be 10 times better, smarter, quicker, savvier, braver, etc., than BO. It is just not good enough to be as good, or even a bit better. It is just the reality of an enemy MSM who will push BO again, with vitrial and lies. So, who will be the nominee? I really have no clue, but I do hope it becomes anyone but BO by that time because we really do not have great choices to win the popular vote and electoral vote. I just wish folks who support one candidate over another do not get all personal. It is so useless and reminds me of the liberal wack jobs on lib sites. I trully thought much more of conservatives, I still do for the most part, but this ” throll” accusation thing, calling folks names is not a good thing. It only alienates fellow conservatives who have someone of a different opinion but who will likely come together and support your nominee if that person wins. So, let’s discuss the issues, the candidates and be rational fellow conservaives, help each other know the facts and give each other information. Let’s not be like the liberal Obama worshipers. Also, let’s not forget, we still have 2010 and let’s not make the mistake of Ross Perot, i.e., 3d parties. I have raised certain issues about Palin’s electablity by the whole country in the past and have been called names, never attacked on facts, just called names. Same thing happened to me when I was against McCain. I voted for MCCAin because he picked Palin, I even put a sticker of MCCAin Palin but I cut out McCAin’s name. People loved it. Since that time, I have had certain concerns with Palin’s general election chances. I don’t know what will happen, I hope she does succeed. However, my concenrs do not make me a throll or any other idiotic name. As is obvious, many conservatives have concerns about the general election in a country that VOTED FOR BO in 2008 after al, a country where we have a finiky middle of th road electorate (the independents) that seem to control too much. Anyway, let’s get along people, not trying to sound a lib, but we need to unite!!!! Whoever we pick adn fight for them. Good night, that is all I have time for. Wish I could stck around.

No they just need to be genuine and connect with real life human beings. Not “polished” career politicians.

From your posts I get the impression you’re more concerned with appearance in a candidate then in their values and if they’ve the backbone/record to stand up for American values.

Right now Sarah Palin thanks to the constant attacks has become the most vetted politician in history.

Sharr on March 11, 2010 at 10:07 PM

Romney 2012 = McCain 2008.

Plus, he’s a mannequin. Completely plastic.

No chance.

tsj017 on March 11, 2010 at 9:51 PM
He’s wooden. I lost any interest in Romney when I was there at CPAC 2009 and he came off just so dead and just hollow. He’s not grounded properly and a strong wind could knock him over so to speak.

He is the guy you give the reigns to after the heavy lifting is done or give him a business to turn around playing numbers.

The fire is not there. It is almost like he is propped up similar to Obama.

Sapwolf on March 11, 2010 at 9:55 PM

Ever hear of ‘action speaks louder than words’? We’re looking for a person who is INTELLIGENT and EXPERIENCED who can run our country, and that is Romney. Who cares if he’s not charismatic (they ‘say’ Obama is – look where that got us), and who cares if he’s ‘boring’ or ‘hollow’ or has ‘no fire’ (again, Obama with his ‘hope’ and ‘change’ fired people up, and…again, look where THAT got us). What are you looking for – a phoney, egotistical movie star to run this country? BTW, Obama’s followers and voters think he’s a rock star…..get the picture?

brendy on March 11, 2010 at 10:07 PM

And Obama, WHO IS THE PRESIDENT, never served in our military, either! HE got elected, so why the ‘hatred’ of Romney and his boys????

brendy on March 11, 2010 at 9:55 PM

Barack Obama could have been one of the pilots on 9/11 and he would have won! He’s not a Republican, and he’s not bound by the same standards.

And I don’t hate Romney or his boys. I’m just as convinced he will go down in flames in ’12 if he’s the nominee as some of you are that Palin will.

These polls tighten up considerably when Huck is taken out the equation. Palin and Huck are splitting the Evangelicals and social conservatives….neat trick by PPP. Throw in Thune, Gingrich, Daniels, and T-paw and see where we stand. Huck probably won’t run anyway.

Disaster is in the eye of the beholder. I thought he did a masterful job. I saw it this analysis.

The one interview I did not like was his interview with Hannity where he talked about our “addiction to oil”. See – I’m fair and balanced.

Buy Danish on March 11, 2010 at 10:16 PM

All he needs is one early state win — New Hampshire or Michigan — to give him a little mo heading into Florida into 2012. In fact, he might end up thinking of Florida as his firewall: Even if a social con takes South Carolina, Mitt’s still got Miami ahead to kill his opponent’s momentum.

Without Crispy’s endorsement for McVain, Fla could have gone to Mitt or Rudy. I don’t recall Huckleberry having a real a chance. Likewise in Oklahoma, a lot of people were PO’d that Inhofe & Coburn endorsed McVain – especially on the local talk radios. But for that, we could have gone to Mitt more so than Huckster followed by Rudy.

AH_C on March 11, 2010 at 10:17 PM

That being said, the only scenario in which I don’t want Sarah to run is if HRC is the nominee.

I would actually agree with that. And I could live with it. Hillary is pushing 70. This is going to be her last go at the presidency, but Sarah is still just a spring chicken by political standards. She has many more opportunities to run if she doesn’t do it this time. Having said that, however, I still believe 2012 is her year. We need a person with her convictions and record of fiscal conservatism right now. Electing HRC or some RINO squish will just be like putting a band-aid on an amputated limb. It’s still better than another 4 years of Obama tho.

A girl I once knew said that women don’t dress to impress men. They dress to one-up other women.

I listened to a recent interview with Romney.

Romney was actually defending RomneyCare. Seriously. He could have easily said: “it was a state experiment. We thought it was worth trying. But, it’s not working out that well because costs and premiums are through the ceiling.”
Nope. He owns it.

I was profoundly disappointed. I don’t think I could vote for Romney after listening to it. I’d even find it hard to vote for Romney over Bambi because I don’t trust Romney at all.

CatoRenasci on March 11, 2010 at 10:33 PM

Do you remember what a darling McCain was to the media before he won the nomination and then how they turned on him?

Do you remember how Hillary Clinton was savaged when it looked like she might upset the liberal applecart?

The democrats and their allies, the media has been constantly attacking Sarah Palin. They are obsessed with Palin – why is that? Almost every other day, a new, vicious, personal attack is launched – either by so-called ‘comedians’, the media, some Hollywood nut somewhere, or their useful idiots in the GOP etablishment – if Palin is NOT a threat to these people and the democrats, why do they waste their time attacking her?

Do you remember the barrage of MSM stories about Romney in the last two years?

Yeah, neither do I.

It is ABSOLUTELY OBVIOUS who they want to run, and who they are afraid of.

The GOP of course will do everything they can to nominate Romney, for them failure is always an option!

sharrukin on March 11, 2010 at 10:34 PM

We have to have a ‘winning’ candidate; we conservatives might all like Sarah very much, but the fact is – we have to appeal to independents and moderates to win. I think a lot of women depise Palin because of her pro-life stand (and MANY, I believe, esp. the moderates/liberals, may be jealous of her because of her looks, figure, nice looking husband/family, etc.) and wouldn’t vote for her. That’s why I think Romney has a better chance of winning rather than Sarah.

Of course, men, too, can be jealous of other men (good looking, wealthy, nice-looking family, etc. – HUCKABEE was no doubt JEALOUS of Romney, as was McCain – thus, their ‘ganging up’ on him during the primaries). It’s a shame that ‘jealousy’ of someone plays a part in politicis – but it does.

brendy on March 11, 2010 at 10:35 PM

depise = despise

Correction: Of course, liberal woman would NEVER vote for a republican woman, even if she were fat, old and ugly.

I just landed, so haven’t read all, but if you don’t think Mitt would have more class than the big “O”; would not bow down to foreign leaders; would not treat Israel as an enemy, nor Poland, or the Czech Republic; would never give the Queen of England a copy of his speeches on an ipod; would not call the Supreme Court out in his speech (and make them sit there and have the brainless dems leap up and clap and threaten them). He would bring class back to the White House and to the country. OH, please, take a look at him and his wife and family and see what a decent man he really is, and what a great job he would do in the White House. He saved the Olympics and it was one of the few that did not destroy the city, or the country in horrible debt. He took $1.00. Can you imagine the great people he would have on his cabinet? And most likely some of them would be willing to serve their country for $1:00. Sara could certainly be one of them and then she would get the “gravitas” (don’t you hate the word?)which they all say she needs. He is not perfect – as we as conservatives want everybody to be. But he is 1 trillion times better than that “no nothing” sitting in the White House today. Everyone says what a wonderful Constitutional teacher he was, how come we never hear from any of his students?
I like Mitt/Ryan for the ticket.

Bambi on March 11, 2010 at 10:38 PM

Thats funny because I think Palin would do better against Hillary than Obama. Blacks will not vote if Hillary somehow managed to make Obama lose the nomination. Palin already isn’t getting the liberal woman vote so replacing Hillary for Obama doesn’t hurt her.

Speedwagon82 on March 11, 2010 at 10:40 PM

As someone from Central Florida…

this poll is bogus. Romney is akin to Crist, and Palin is akin to Rubio.

About the only possible way this makes any sense is if they polled nothing but snowbirds. And even then, I find it hard to believe.

So yeah, take all of this with a large amount of salt (except for you people in NY, who are about to have it banned).

Scott H on March 11, 2010 at 10:48 PM

Palin suffers the same problem Obama does – more celebrity than experience. Yes, she has more experience than Obama did, but I think our fellow Americans figured out we need someone with a lot MORE experience.

Mitt hit a lot of good notes on economics during the primaries – it’s been a while, but I remember that being his strong suit.

My guess is the majority of voters want someone fiscally conservative – and experienced.
