Democrats flee as Obama approaches Missouri

posted at 10:12 am on March 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, the AP attempted to use its skewed poll to argue that Barack Obama will be “an asset” on the campaign trail in the midterms.  Missouri Democrats aren’t buying it.  Most of them fled as Obama visited their state for a fundraiser for Claire McCaskill and to campaign for ObamaCare, the very reason most Democrats find themselves so unpopular this year:

The Show Me State temporarily became the No-Show State on Wednesday as some prominent Missouri Democrats decided they’d rather be somewhere else when President Obama came to push his massive health care overhaul plan.

Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, the all-but-certain Democratic nominee for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Christopher S. “Kit” Bond, was “already locked in” to meetings in Washington, D.C., on Wall Street financial reforms, said her spokesman, Linden Zakula, who downplayed her absence for Mr. Obama’s visit to St. Charles, just outside St. Louis. …

Rep. Ike Skelton, one of 39 House Democrats who voted against the party’s health care overhaul bill in December, also skipped the presidential stop in his home state. Mr. Skelton, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, was taking part in a House floor debate on the future of the war in Afghanistan.

In addition, Rep. Russ Carnahan, a Democrat from St. Louis and Mrs. Carnahan’s brother, skipped the event, even though it was in his home district.

Meetings weren’t the only events into which Robin Carnahan was “locked,” as the Washington Times notes.  Carnahan also attended a $5000-a-plate fundraiser at the home of Senator Mary Landrieu.  Zakula said that Carnahan “feels very strongly about the need for financial regulatory reform,” but it seems more likely that she feels strongly about getting a chunk of that campaign cash.  At any rate, she feels more strongly about either or both than being seen with President Obama, despite being in a tough election contest … or perhaps because of it.

Zakula didn’t have entirely positive spin for reporters, however.  Noting that McCaskill isn’t even running for re-election this cycle, reporters asked Zakula for a reaction to Obama’s fundraising for the Senator rather than Congressional candidates.  “You’ll have to ask the White House,” was the response.

How odd is it for a Congressman to play hooky when a President of his own party pays his district a visit?  Normally, elected officials flock to bask in the President’s media coverage — including some politicians of the opposition party.  Russ Carnahan’s absence speaks volumes.

The Washington Post reports that the White House sees these visits as a blessing to allies:

At the same time, Obama intends to lobby wavering House Democrats to vote for a Senate version of the legislation and to support the subsequent reconciliation process, which Republicans have characterized as an unjustified use of majority power. Among the rewards Obama is ready to offer, White House officials said, are election-year visits to competitive congressional districts, where a presidential appearance can bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds.

Maybe he’d do better by offering to stay away.

No, that was Jean Carnahan’s husband while campaigning and she was elected to the seat he was running for. McCaskill holds that seat now.

Are the Carnahan’s trying to become a modern Kennedy legacy or something?

When you get your Carnahan’s mixed up, that’s when you know there is a problem.

Ike Skelton’s a good guy.

Ed, the Same thing happened in PA on Monday: (washingtontimes.com)

The same conspicuous absences occurred Monday in Pennsylvania, a state Mr. Obama won by 10 percentage points in 2008.

While the president was accompanied by embattled Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter, Sen. Bob Casey and Rep. Chaka Fattah aboard Air Force One, several other Pennsylvania Democrats didn’t elect to join him there, including Reps. Patrick J. Murphy, Christopher Carney and Tim Holden, three incumbents facing tough re-election battles.

Maybe he’d do better by offering to stay away.

Actually, Obama is using the same strong-arm tactics he used in his days as a bagman back in Chicago.

He still issues the same threat: “Do what I say or else you might get a little visit.”

The only difference is that now he carries out the enforcement himself — and it’s a lot more painful.

Murphy, Christopher Carney and Tim Holden, three incumbents facing tough re-election battles.

Senator Bob Casey Jr, who defeated former Senator Rick Santorum in 2006, also has some problems with Obama. He appeared with Greta Van Susteren last week on Fox News, complaining that “Stimulus” money was being use to subsidize the manufacture of products in China, and wanted to introduce an amendment in the Senate which would prohibit Stimulus money from funding foreign corporations.

Casey isn’t up for re-election this year, but did he whisper something in Obama’s ear about taxpayers funding Chinese jobs?

Scranton on March 11, 2010 at 12:00 PM

Probably not. Most Republicans in 2005 agreed “in principle” to tackle Social Security reform, but Bush gave them very little guidance about the specifics of his plan. He spent too much time touring the country to talk up his plan before crowds of a few thousand people, while Democrats monopolized the airwaves telling MILLIONS of people that Bush wanted to “take away” their Social Security, and they (the Democrats) would “save” Social Security by doing nothing.

President Bush probably should have stayed in Washington, made a few televised speeches to explain his plan, then worked with Congressional leaders to work out the details of something that could pass Congress. President Bush had some good ideas, but he failed to sell them to the American people and to Congress when he had the chance (in early 2005), and after the Administration (and Louisiana Democrats) bungled the Katrina rescue, people no longer trusted him. Due to a communications failure, Bush squandered a huge opportunity (with GOP majorities in Congress) to enact much-needed reform to Social Security, which will soon run deficits.

Obama has managed to alienate the American people much faster than Bush did, despite having most of the media on his side (while Bush faced a hostile press). He has wasted far too much time pushing a health-care bill most people don’t want, while quadrupling the deficits and failing to address the issue of unemployment, and Democrats from reddish-purple districts know that health care could cost them their seats, so they flee Obama.

Steve Z on March 11, 2010 at 12:44 PM

Or, to cut expenses he could just send a DVD of his visits to New Jersey, Virginia and Massachusetts.

You know, I kind of feel sorry for him. I don’t know why. He’s got us so far in debt as a nation we might as well be playing with Monopoly money. He’s managed to insult anyone who has a scintilla of a belief different from his. He’s the big-eared, chocolate easter bunny version of a butched up Marie Antoinette telling us essentially to eat cake–just make it sugar free or he’ll tax the dookie out of it. He’s a joke and he and his ardent supporters either don’t know it or won’t acknowledge it. And for all of that supposed brilliance he supposedly exhibited during his supposed time at Harvard, he’s pretty doggone ignorant. (Supposed because no one seems to be able to locate his transcripts.) He is a pawn in someone else’s game, most likely Soros’, SEIU’s, San Fran Nan’s, and Harry “I think I need to move from Nevada–SOON!” Reid’s game. It’s really a sad thing but in a way I’m glad this all happened. The country is awake and is looking at EVERYONE running for office with a skeptical eye. We’ve got our fight back. We’re reading the founding documents. We’re being reminded of who we were meant to be as a nation. I think the founders would be proud. So thanks, Barry Hussein for being one likable, electable screw up with the trustability factor of a wolf responsible for guarding sheep. To paraphrase Rahmbo here, we haven’t let a good crisis go to waste. No wonder the Dems are fleeing in droves.
