Democrats flee as Obama approaches Missouri

posted at 10:12 am on March 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, the AP attempted to use its skewed poll to argue that Barack Obama will be “an asset” on the campaign trail in the midterms.  Missouri Democrats aren’t buying it.  Most of them fled as Obama visited their state for a fundraiser for Claire McCaskill and to campaign for ObamaCare, the very reason most Democrats find themselves so unpopular this year:

The Show Me State temporarily became the No-Show State on Wednesday as some prominent Missouri Democrats decided they’d rather be somewhere else when President Obama came to push his massive health care overhaul plan.

Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, the all-but-certain Democratic nominee for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Christopher S. “Kit” Bond, was “already locked in” to meetings in Washington, D.C., on Wall Street financial reforms, said her spokesman, Linden Zakula, who downplayed her absence for Mr. Obama’s visit to St. Charles, just outside St. Louis. …

Rep. Ike Skelton, one of 39 House Democrats who voted against the party’s health care overhaul bill in December, also skipped the presidential stop in his home state. Mr. Skelton, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, was taking part in a House floor debate on the future of the war in Afghanistan.

In addition, Rep. Russ Carnahan, a Democrat from St. Louis and Mrs. Carnahan’s brother, skipped the event, even though it was in his home district.

Meetings weren’t the only events into which Robin Carnahan was “locked,” as the Washington Times notes.  Carnahan also attended a $5000-a-plate fundraiser at the home of Senator Mary Landrieu.  Zakula said that Carnahan “feels very strongly about the need for financial regulatory reform,” but it seems more likely that she feels strongly about getting a chunk of that campaign cash.  At any rate, she feels more strongly about either or both than being seen with President Obama, despite being in a tough election contest … or perhaps because of it.

Zakula didn’t have entirely positive spin for reporters, however.  Noting that McCaskill isn’t even running for re-election this cycle, reporters asked Zakula for a reaction to Obama’s fundraising for the Senator rather than Congressional candidates.  “You’ll have to ask the White House,” was the response.

How odd is it for a Congressman to play hooky when a President of his own party pays his district a visit?  Normally, elected officials flock to bask in the President’s media coverage — including some politicians of the opposition party.  Russ Carnahan’s absence speaks volumes.

The Washington Post reports that the White House sees these visits as a blessing to allies:

At the same time, Obama intends to lobby wavering House Democrats to vote for a Senate version of the legislation and to support the subsequent reconciliation process, which Republicans have characterized as an unjustified use of majority power. Among the rewards Obama is ready to offer, White House officials said, are election-year visits to competitive congressional districts, where a presidential appearance can bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds.

Maybe he’d do better by offering to stay away.

I think the GOP should take up a collection to keep sending Obama around the country. Pretty soon, we’ll have no Democrats left in Congress!!!!

Funny, but I recall Bush campaigning for members of his party in 2002 and helping to get them elected(despite the drive-bys predicting the opposite). Yet the allegedly popular Obama is toxic to Dems seeking reelection this November.

Bravely the Dems ran away.
(“No!”)
Bravely ran away away.
(“We didn’t!”)
When danger reared it’s ugly head,
They bravely turned they’re tail and fled.
(“no!”)
Yes, brave the Dems turned about
(“We didn’t!”)
And gallantly they chickened out.

****Bravely**** taking (“We never did!”) to they’re feet,
They beat a very brave retreat.
(“all lies!”)
Bravest of the braaaave, Democrats!
(“We never!”)

Happened here in PA. When Obama spoke at Arcadia University, Dem Patrick Murphy was busy elsewhere, announcing some federal grant to a township for public services on the same day. Murphy’s event could easily have been rescheduled, but it wasn’t.

Murphy is in a Philly suburban district. He only won by about 800 votes in 2006. Close in 2008, although I don’t recall the number.

Most notably, the story about McArthur’s Bakery–apparently a successful and great place that took real issue with Cap and Tax Scheme that Mr. Carnahan apparently supported. I believe the St Louis Tea Party, and Dana Loesch have Carnahan in their sights for this fall—and for good reason.

What also speaks volumes is that the narrative includes multiple Carnahans, one of whom attended a fundraiser for Mary Landrieu whose own brother just got elected Mayor of New Orleans after a stint in LA state government. THERE ARE TOO MANY PRINCES AND PRINCESSES RUNNING AROUND IN THE POLITICAL CLASS

As to McCaskill, who needs to be told that dressing up in a pig suit doesn’t appeal to voters, her constituents got it right last August’s town hall where they responded with a thunderous NO! when she asked if they trusted her.

Trust no Democrat, leave no Democrat in office.

The mistake made here is in mixing the presiden’t popularity with his impact. In business, there’s a concept of a “creosote bush.” The bush has a broad reach, and it drips a caustic substance that kills everything underneath it. I think that’s an apt analogy, don’t you?

jdfister on March 11, 2010 at 10:49 AM

I thought the big story here (at least according to Erickson/Red State) was that Obama was so toxic he has to funnel money to candidates like Carnahan (who can’t afford to be seen with him) through more-established candidates like McCaskill.

According to this story, Obama came to appear with McCaskill, with up to a thousand ticket for sale at price tags up to $50,000. Then she acknowledged that

a large chunk of next week’s cash will be used to help the only major Missouri Democrat running for the U.S. Senate, Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan .

Meanwhile, Carnahan is conveniently out of town.

This is how Obama will have to help Democratic candidates in red/purple districts. He can’t be seen with them lest 1) it further taints him when they lose and 2) it taints the candidates in the eyes of their more conservative constituents. He’ll have to be seen with only “safe” representatives who then funnel to money out into the party. Toxic indeed.

I don’t understand how Carnahan even got elected. I know that part of his district is in the St. Louis city limits, but he also has Jefferson and Ste. Genevieve counties. Now Ste. Genevieve only has a population of 20,000 or so, but Jefferson is one of the larger counties in the state with over 200,000 people.

I live in Jefferson county and there is a huge union presence here. Gebhart was an automatic vote in this county and Carnahan ran here because of that. We might see a different result this time

Much of STL is automatic democrat lever pullers. People that have never even thought about it.

Darn. Now I won’t be able to even enjoy a good bowel movement without thinking about him.
Thanks a lot.

Unfortunately I live in North County, so unless the demographics change or the districts change, I will always be stuck with a Democrat congressman.

Well I for one am getting out in Jefferson county to change some minds. I understand what you are saying about North St. Louis county. Have to get a good Republican to run up there. Maybe the guy who got beat up at the Carnahan town hall?

Sure wish your article forcused on the hundreds and thousands of people who DID show up to his event…the protestors at the townhall in the morning and the protestors who were in front of the hotel last night.

I have been to many protests this past year against this administration, and the passion and anger last night in fromt of the hotel was the highest I have seen. We outnumbered the pro-Obama side considerably.

Missouri doesn’t want Obabmacare or McCaskill or either one of the Carnahans. He can speak and speak and speak, hoping we will “finally get it”, but he’s just wasting his breath, time and OUR money. He was able to write this fundraiser off to the taxpayers because he spoke at a high school earlier in the day. We’re not buying his schtick. He really does think we are stupid, doesn’t he?
