Quotes of the day
posted at 10:40 pm on March 10, 2010 by Allahpundit
“I am thoroughly convinced that while Obama is somewhat vulnerable (if the economy improves, he wins big, if it stays the same, he wins very small, if it gets worse, he loses big), Sarah Palin has less of a chance to beat him than just about anyone else who is currently considered in contention…
“By joining Fox News Channel and fully embracing the Tea Party movement (both of which are fantastic in concept but far less than perfect in practice) I believe she has sealed herself off from having any chance to change the minds that she would have to persuade to be viable against Obama. This includes the vast majority of the over seventy percent of voters which polls show think she is ‘not qualified’ to be president, as well as numerous die-hard Republicans who have unfortunately (and despite my best efforts) already completely bought into the media’s negative view of her…
“[U]nder the ‘economic doom’ scenario, Palin might very be the only mainstream Republican Obama could beat. Think of it this way, if things are truly that desperate in 2012, is America really going to dump a guy who at least has four years of Presidential experience for a person who has none, who ‘quit’ her job as Governor of a small state, and who they have been told over and over is not very bright?…
“Of course, it is very important to point out that something like this may already be Palin’s plan (for the record, I have shared almost all of these thoughts with her via her personal e-mail but have received no response). So far, I have not seen one shred of legitimate evidence indicating that she has decided to run and some serious indications that she won’t. If she really possesses the personal qualities that I have been claiming she does, then she will realize that it is not in her, her party’s, or her country’s interest for her to do so.”
***
“In 2012, Palin would control what she wanted to talk about and would be a proactive campaigner dictating what the media was forced to cover.
“Mitt Romney, or the rest of the stale, tired, losers RedState and other ‘Romney guy’ sites keep pushing would just follow the standard GOP model of reacting to whatever the MSM is pushing…and since the MSM would be pushing whatever made Dr. Utopia look best, the campaign dynamic would be completely different.
“Palin would be in charge by the very nature of who she is, and the massive response she gets to every little thing she does. Romney and the others would be at the mercy of fate and media whims, forever tilting the way the wind blew against them, never gaining traction, losing to Dr. Utopia’s re-election machine…of which the media is not just a part, but the core and engine.
“We will endeavor for the next two years to make sure we do everything we can to help Sarah Palin.”

Nov 2010..we take back the government!

“Freedom” isn’t permissiveness, or, vice-versa, nor is Freedom eradication of Liberty. I mean, the very notion that one “believes” one thing (“personally”) but then votes to support the opposite is an indication of duplicity. One would then be believing the one and lying about the other.
That’s not an indication of “Freedom,” that’s an indication of anarchy, just as I earlier noted many Libertarians such as yourself promote.

Neither. They are called “drug addicts.”
The irritating thing about social conservatives is they can be just as bad as the socialists in wanting to legislate their version of morality and intrude on the private lives of the individual.

Last Friday night, I met Sarah in Columbus, OH for the Ohio Right to Life event. I handed her a copy of Russell Kirk’s “The Conservative Mind” on behalf of C4P. Sarah already walks prudent conservatism in her life so if she has not read Kirk’s movement book …well…she really doesn’t have to does she. I would guess she has read Kirk’s ten principles from his book “The Politics of Prudence” based on past speeches and columns.
If I handed that book to Mitt, Romney would have simply acknowledged Kirk’s intellectual depth but that’s it, no respect for the ‘timeless truths’. He is a finger-in-the-wind type of guy and doesn’t deserve the respect or our efforts. Nice guy, but not Presidential material.

There are reasons conservatives are not as trusting of Libertarians virtue as you would like.
Murray Rothbard’s… Ethics of Liberty
CHILDREN AND RIGHTS
For the child has his full rights of self-ownership when he demonstrates that he has them in nature—in short, when he leaves or “runs away” from home. Regardless of his age, we must grant to every child the absolute right to runaway and to find new foster parents who will voluntarily adopt him, or to try to exist on his own. Parents may try to persuade the runaway child to return, but it is totally impermissible enslavement and an aggression upon his right of self-ownership for them to use force to compel him to return. The absolute right to run away is the child’s ultimate expression of his right of self-ownership, regardless of age.
Now if a parent may own his child (within the framework of non-aggression and runaway-freedom), then he may also transfer that ownership to someone else. He may give the child out for adoption, or he may sell the rights to the child in a voluntary contract. In short, we must face the fact that the purely free society will have a flourishing free market in children.
So if a ten year old runs away, which she has an absolute right to do, to exist on her own, she could take up the newly legalized profession of prostitution as a good career move! At least according to the Murray Rothbard’s of the world. That is in addition to being bought and sold by her parents, or current owner.
As Murray Rothbard said…REGARDLESS OF AGE!
Libertarian presidential candidate Mary Ruwart
From her book…
Short Answers to the Tough Questions.
Ruwart’s response to the question “How can a libertarian argue against child pornography?”
Children who willingly participate in sexual acts have the right to make that decision as well, even if it’s distasteful to us personally. Some children will make poor choices just as some adults do in smoking and drinking to excess. When we outlaw child pornography, the prices paid for child performers rise, increasing the incentives for parents to use children against their will.
Robert Nozick, in Anarchy, State, and Utopia, maintained that slavery contracts were permissible and indeed enforceable.
The comparable question about an individual is whether a free system will allow him to sell himself into slavery. I believe that it would. [Nozick 1974, 331]

In my experience, “social conservatives” “legislate” to protect their liberties, or, those Constitutional Rights so easily overrun by Libertarians.
There’s that Freedom of Religion one especially, that’s likely the most reviled by the Liberals. Most social conservatives support the limits of government defined by our Constitutional as much as the Freedoms we’re provided.

The thing is… a lot of Libertarians are not bad sorts, but I think they haven’t really thought through what they are saying, or the implications.
Others simply haven’t been told about a lot of these things as they actually have lives, and cannot be bothered to read and absorb what leading Libertarian thinkers believe.

Well, you know, I think it’s the same thing socially (in the social sense, socially, as in, “society”) as the term, “Progressive.”
Some people find the WORDS attractive, like, well, hey, Libertarian, Progressive, Progressivism…it’s as if they’re wearing a label, buying a new CD with that “catchy title” thing, their friends are all saying the word, it’s new, sets them apart: they’re “not old people”…
But without regard for the legacy and specific implications and associations of what those words actually involve.

Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.
Thomas Paine
what makes government intolerable? When our leaders forget this:
Now, no one expects us to agree on everything, whether in Juneau or in Washington. But we are expected to govern with integrity and good will and clear convictions and a servant’s heart.

If Sarah runs and wins the nomination, it will be because she will have survived
the primary process. While not perfect, that process *will* produce the best Republican for 2012.
If she is deserving, she will get it, and even folks not so in tune with here will get behind her.
Don’t let the elites tell you who the GOP candidate must be. Let the primary process determine that.
Oh, and if the economy is still in the tank in 2012, the country would rather elect Bin Laden than reelect Barry.
datadriver on March 11, 2010 at 1:13 AM
Well I have read the Soviet constitution and the American constitution and they both sound swell. You need to look deeper than that to really understand what is actually going on.
Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don’t mean to do harm– but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

that depends. If the GOp has congress the people may elect to keep obama in the whitehouse and the government gridlocked so they can’t screw it up anymore. that thought of a rino congress with Mitt at the helm sends shivers down my spine. It would be worse than Obama with a GOp congress by many times as bush and his rino congress showed and may allow the dems to get back into unlimited power.

I love Zig Zag Man. All the Palin People do. He was one of the first guys who unmasked the Obamist Propaganda Campaign.
His problem is that he comes off as a loose cannon on the Gun Deck. Sarah can’t have that as part of her operation. Ziegler desperately wants to be on the inside, but Sarah can’t afford to have a guy who gets himself arrested at Katie Couric’s Emmy Event, as one of her Made Guys!
Zig Zag wants the best for Sarah, but part of this is him being upset with being on the Outside and being kept there. You send emails to The Goddess that you sincerely believe are in her best interest and she doesn’t even ANSWER YOU, after you made that film about how she was wronged?

TheAlamos on March 11, 2010 at 2:10 AM
Folks, I know it is difficult to reconcile yourself to a scenario that involves only two viable candidates for the GOP nomination but it appears now it will either be Romney or Palin as the 2012 GOP nominee. Of course the counterargument is that it is still early and a dark horse could emerge to pass them both. To me that is wishful thinking. That may occur at a horse race or a track meet but in politics that just does not happen, unless someone enters the race with such a venerable stature that he becomes an overwhelming favorite from day one. Eisenhower and Reagan are dead. Cheney’s health won’t permit him to run, and Jeb Bush would be shunned by voters because of his last name. Do you really believe Pawlenty, Thune, Jindal, Barbour, Daniels, Pence etc could beat both Romney and Palin in the same contest? No way. It is what it is. You have to play the cards that you are dealt.
So what about Huckabee you say. As of now, he has given word that he will not be attending the SRLC, a launching pad for future GOP presidential aspirants, that is held only once every 4 years. In addition Huck gave an interview last fall in which he said he would not run if he could not get more support from the GOP establishment. I don’t see that coming Huck’s way anytime soon. And of course there is the clemency issue hanging over Huck’s head. Then you add in Huck’s poor record of fundraising and Huck’s current price on Intrade at 1.7 and you can figure pretty well that Huck is not going to throw his hat into the ring in 2012.
Now that leaves Romney and Palin.
We all know that Mitt will throw his hat into the ring. All there is left is the press conference.
As for Palin, tell me why she is receiving daily briefings from Washington, tell me why she has such an intensive schedule in the works in visiting all over the lower 48 in the coming months, tell me why she is endorsing Congressional candidates for the 2010 midterms, tell me why she is writing another book, tell me why she hasn’t accepted an offer to host her own TV show or retired to Alaska to become full-time housewife, and if you are convinced all Palin wants to become is a celebretard, why has she chosen to visit such hotspots as Tulsa, OK, Orlando, Fla, and Selina, Kansas and shunned LA, SF, NYC and Washington DC? Could it be that Palin, like candidates of the past is busy getting her ducks in a row, building the foundation of an organization, and essentially preparing herself for the long presidential marathon ahead?
And for those familiar with sports, if you are a playoff team and you feel you are that close to winning a championship, do you as an organization go out of your way to pick up or trade for the “missing piece of the puzzle” or do you say I’ll wait till next year? The answer is obvious. Use common sense. With Palin’s current standing in the polls as a major contender, why would she not run in 2012? Because she didn’t think she could win the GOP nomination. The polls currently don’t show that and I don’t think they ever will.
So again if it comes down to Romney or Palin who will you vote for? If you are a Romney supporter, you are expected to vote for your man. But if you are a conservative and believe in the Constitution and conservative principles be followed in government are you really not going to vote for Sarah Palin but instead give your vote to Romney who is not a conservative or a fringe candidate who has no chance of prevailing? And when Romney wins the GOP nomination will you be representative of the people who always complain that the MSM chose the GOP candidate again?
I predict in 2012 it will be put up of shut up time for conservatives. How badly do you want a Reagan conservative in the White House and are you all talk and no action?
technopeasant on March 11, 2010 at 2:25 AM
Just about every prominent Repub is backing McCain from Scott Brown (who did some fundraisers this week in AZ with McCain) to Mitt Romney to Jeb Bush. Sarah would look like an ungrateful backstabbing fool if she didn’t support him.
She campaigned for him to be Prez but now won’t endorse him. Even JD Hayworth says he will back McCain in the General election if McCain wins. You guys need to get over this obsession of singling out and bashing Palin for supporting her former running mate. Rush and Mark Levin have said over and over that was her only option and they don’t hold it against her. Sheesh!

sarahpalinfan99 on March 11, 2010 at 2:29 AM
Well said. I really doubt that any of the ‘blank slate’ candidates will get any traction. I do fear that Romney will win, but Sarah Palin has a decent chance.
My guess is 65-35 chance for Romney-Palin. I hope Sarah Palin wins, but the GOP and the DC insiders are dead set against her
sharrukin on March 11, 2010 at 2:33 AM
Screw that. Keep the media guessing and floundering for as long as possible.
LibTired on March 11, 2010 at 2:33 AM
Bottom line: Are you going to vote for Romney because Palin endorsed McCain?
I seem to remember Romney endorsed McCain as well. Seems like a wash to me.
Conservatives, stop with the purity garbage. Palin is going to Searchlight, Nevada, Harry Reid’s stomping grounds, ath the end of this month on behalf of the TP movement, without fee, to help take the majority leader of the Senate down. And this is on the same day she does an event for McCain.
Palin is not perfect, but again conservatives are you really going to vote for Romney because Palin endorsed her former running mate? Do you really believe that Palin has turned RINO? Please get a life if you do.
technopeasant on March 11, 2010 at 2:35 AM
Thread winner for me!
Although, I do think Huck will run and some others who have no chance. Look at last time when McCain ran. He had no money, no staff and almost no support when the primaries started. Yet he went for it. I remember stories about McCain having to carry his own luggage from place to place. Blind ambition leads people to seek the brass ring. Ron Paul, Hunter, Tancredo (I think) even though they had little chance of winning too.

PALIN SHOULD ANNOUNCE HER PLANS AT THE START OF 2011
What gives you any indication that she wouldn’t? Please don’t fall for the female stereotype of Palin being whimsical or not level-headed. Palin knows what she is doing and is getting good advice from her “kitchen cabinet’ who she communicates with consistently on her blackberry and over the Internet. Tell me where she has really gone off track since her resignation.
Don’t fall for the media BS that Palin doesn’t know what she is doing and has a game plan in place. She knows exactly what she is doing and if there are any missing pieces she knows where to go to secure them. Don’t forget Palin has the Reagan ‘Wilderness’ playbook to fall back on.

An excellent post over at FR to the issue of Palin endorsing McCain and why the response to the endorsement by some conservatives is disproportionate to the act itself:

Allah, et al.,
First of all, I am usually absolutely hammered by the time I ever comment on a thread here (heeey…I just turned 30 this year, am single, and that’s what we do, if we’re single in the bed for the night ;) ).
Aside from being a constant lurker, I understand your need for quasi-love/hate Palin threads, because they generate the most comments, are the most controversial, and bring the most $$ to the site. Capitalism is a beautiful thing.
However, I have one point of disagreement with ya’ll. Is this the proper time for this? We’re looking at the transformation of the American Republic into a European-style socialistic democracy, and you know these bills WILL complete it. It’s time to organize the people who are willing, and quit feeding the troll fodder. Ya’ll know what’s at stake here, c’mon.
The one thing that I want, along with my friends my age, is to be able to pass on our life/knowledge/sh!t we’ve been thru to the next generation. I don’t have kids right now, but I do plan on it eventually (if, G-d forbid, i ever settle down). These bills that they’re trying to get through (health care, federal student loan take over, cap and trade, etc..) prevent us from even really being able to do that. How the hell are we as a generation going to teach our kids how to live a life as an individual when the government controls everything from vehicles, education, (soon to be) health, (soon to be) energy, and G-d knows what’s else? Many of my close friends just started families – we’re all worried about how this is going to end.
Anyway…please forgive me for the long rant – I know long posts are kinda taboo in the comments ;). Saki bombs and Bud Light pitchers all night will bring it out of a man. It’s just that many times ya’ll seem to focus on b.s. that brings you traffic/comment wars. It’s your prerogative, and I respect that, but if we’re going to win this war against the backward/progressive/Marxist/evil ideologies, we have to stop tearing down people who actually step up to the plate and bear the brunt.

“…IF WE’RE GOING TO WIN THIS WAR AGAINST THE BACKWARD/PROGRESSIVE/MARXIST/EVIL IDEOLOGIES, WE HAVE TO STOP TEARING DOWN PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND BEAR THE BRUNT.”
The most difficult thing you will have to face and your conservative friends will have to face and I cannot overestimate how difficult it is to face this fact but simply America is now an “occupied” country, ruled by a Marxist ideologue whose only goal is to deliberately tear down its social, economic and political foundation and send all phases of American life into bankruptcy and to erect in its place a socialist Utopia that will enslave most of us and reward the few. Do you really think Obama and his Marxist czars and Leftist followers think like you and I do? They call themselves Americans, but are they really in terms of their values, beliefs and what makes them happy?
Obama is evil. I knew he was evil before he was elected. Just because he wears a $1000 suit, gets a fantastic haircut, wear a white shirt and tie and wears expensive shoes doesn’t make him any less evil than Lenin or Castro.
But much of America still refuses to acknowledge the true nature of the Messiah. Many think he is misguided, others accuse him of overreaching and then there are some who still blame George Bush.
Remember the adage we learned in school: Birds of a feather flock together. Do the research yourself or ask your conservative friends to do the research of who Obama has flocked with since his teen years and you are left with one conclusion: this is one mean SOB who knows what he wants and is prepared to do whatever it takes to attain it.
And finally to your point. Who has invoked the most hostility, condemnation and wrath from the MSM in the past year-the POTUS who has threatened to take America off a cliff or a private citizen from Wasilla, Alaska who has used her Facebook as a free citizen of a supposed free country to bring attention to issues which she felt would be of interest to conservatives and the American people? We both know the answer to that question. That we on our side would criticize the one person who has short-circuited the Messiah and his agenda the most is imho highly counterproductive and sheer lunacy.

The term “Vichy Republicans” comes to mind! We all know how things turned out for the Vichy French.

That’s the question I have been asking. Why don’t Americans see the threat that Obama poses? Even I can see that from Australia.
Can America afford 8 years of Obama and what are you doing to stop this from happening.

Palin has as much a chance of being President as an African-American.
