Lindsey Graham to Obama: Let’s “step it up” and get to work on amnesty already

posted at 9:33 pm on March 10, 2010 by Allahpundit

I’m trying hard to convince myself that this is actually a devilishly clever scheme by Graham to set a political trap for Democrats by pushing the issue now.

But I’m losing the argument.

“At the end of the day, the president needs to step it up a little bit,” Graham told POLITICO on Tuesday. “One line in the State of the Union is not going to do it.”

For the past six months, Graham and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) — who meet with Obama at 3 p.m. Thursday — have worked on a reform framework. Their plan, which hasn’t been introduced yet, includes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants (a liberal must-have) while sweetening the pot for moderates by proposing tough new safeguards, including a biometric national ID card for workers…

Graham said he wants a greater sense of direction to break the cycle of distrust that doomed comprehensive immigration reform during the Bush administration, despite the support of a Republican president and major party figures like Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

I think moderate Democrats have to come on board before you get Republicans, and Republicans have to come on board before you get Democrats,” said Graham…

The hope … is to build a consensus around a measure that could pass sometime in the not too distant, non-election-year future.

They know they’ll never get Blue Dogs to commit this year, so the idea is … what? To woo a bunch of centrist Democrats now who might very well end up being tossed out in November anyway? Even if they brought a few around, is there even a single Republican who’d move an inch on this with the tea party crowd watching suspiciously? McCain supposedly hasn’t so much as spoken to Graham about it and top RINO Susan Collins says she’s “not even thinking about it.” The best I can do to justify Graham’s lobbying is to imagine that it’s kabuki designed to impress upon Latino voters how reluctant The One is to fulfill his promise to them. (“[D]elay obviously adds to disillusionment,” says amnesty shill Robert Menendez.) See, it’s the Republicans who want to get to work on this, so open-borders advocates should vote (or rather, not vote) accordingly in November — never mind the fact that watching the GOP inevitably backtrack from that posture if/when the bill does come to the floor next year will only irritate amnesty supporters more. Is that what he’s up to, or is he … really this intent on cramming legalization down America’s piehole? I want to believe.

You honestly have to wonder if this clown ever takes the time to stop and listen to the utter nonsense and sheer stupidity that comes flying out of his pie hole!

What? Not enough illegals to mow his lawn?

Dandapani on March 11, 2010 at 6:18 AM

Grahamnesty reminds me of one of those kids in the Ally Bank commercials.

I’d love to see the look on Grahamnesty’s face when Obama gives him the fine print.

kevinkristy on March 11, 2010 at 6:29 AM

He seems to pop up at the most inopportune times, which leads me to believe he is just a spoiled, repellent attention whore who cannot stand to be out of the spotlight for very long.

One of those dipsh!ts who think that even negative attention is better than no attention.

You people in South Carolina need to RECALL IODINEHEAD Graham…

My new nickname comes from the notion South Carolina produced Iodine. One of SC’s nicknames was Wonderful Iodine State, where TV station WIS-TV Channel 10 Columbia got its call letters.

If y’all ask me, Grahmnesty has gotten some SEVERE Iodine poisoning…it’s rotting his mind!

RINO’s – use them (to DUMP the Marxists) and then lose them.

Betrayal from inside is the most deadly

There was this Juadas fellow

Then there was this Brutus fellow

Then this Obamaclan

And the most dangerous -RINOs

Notice the one often belived by conservatives to be on their side – Joe Lieberman – is behind this also. Moderates are people wtih shify values and principles – sold on the spot to the highest bidder! You can bet that McCain (Graham’s mentor and soulmate) is pushing this covertly also, but because he’s wearing his conservative cloak till November – he can’t say anything out loud.

First dump the Obamacrats, then dump the RINOS, then dump the corrupt porkulus folks in the party and watch America return to greatness.

Lindsey “Mini-McCain” Graham has always rubbed me the wrong way. He comes off as exactly what he is. An opportunistic schmuck and schmo. Beyond that he is a whiner who lost any support from me when he called people like me racist for not supporting the McCain-Kennedy scheme to reward millions of illegals with no-strings attached citizenship. Apparently the bastard hasn’t learned his lesson and is out there trying to launch amnesty with Chuckie Schumer. Lots a luck with that and lots of luck getting re-elected if the good people of South Carolina have any sense.

In reality Graham gives spoiled, repellent attention whores a bad name.

This guy is an absolute loose cannon. We need some leadership from the RNC here to put Graham in his place. Do you think we’ll see that? Heck no. DD

It’s funny but you could look at a photo of Lindsay Graham and, without knowing one thing about who he is and what he does and what his views are, know immediately that he is a douchebag. In fact that was precisely my experience.

No, the first thing I thought when I saw him was he was a transitioning female into male or maybe vice versa….

Apparently, the last man in South Carolina died in the Civ…er, War against Northern oppression. Looking forward to you Johnny Rebs growing a pair and dumping this useless idiot…or does he really and truly speak for you?

Why does South Carolina always return this clown, is this the best the state can do. The guy is a complete embarrassment! Thanks SC for giving us this dope.

I bet that you will find the public has as their top item AMNESTY … Just stealing the jobs Americans used to have.

The day we get a national ID card is the day the American experiment dies forever as a failure.

And yes, it does matter even though we have SS cards and passports and drivers licenses. If you don’t know why it matters then you don’t deserve to be an American anyway so show your papers and be happy.

Jaynie59 on March 11, 2010 at 8:46 AM

Graham is an embarrassment to the GOP and needs to be booted as far into the Atlantic as South Carolinians can boot him. What we need right now is a moron RINO shooting off his mouth about something that’s unneeded and something that the country wants as little as healthcare reform.

Dude…it was the “War of Northern Aggression“. Geez, don’t you yankees know anything? :-)

I share your opinion of South Carolina voters though…time for Lindsey to leave-sey.

MississippiMom on March 11, 2010 at 9:29 AM

This will get even better when it comes out that Grahamnesty’s willing to trade a vote for ObamaCare on this.

This immigration bill isn’t the only place our ruling class is preparing for Nat’l IDs, comrades. The House slipped provisions in a spending bill last week, and the Senate is set to pass it in a few days.

Tyranny’s march certainly has been swift under Chairman Obama and the 111th Council of People’s Commissars!

Rae on March 11, 2010 at 10:24 AM

There is no more racist, cynical, anti-union, anti-democratic “progressive” policy than their encouragement of illegal immigration. It has turned Mexico into a hell hole, broken the construction unions, denied African Americans the opportunity to work their way into the middle class via the laborer/carpenter/contractor/real estate developer chain, and creates a serf class that can be exploited without repercussion.

Lindsey Graham is in his second term in the Senate, first elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2008. 2008 was a tough year for conservatives, even in the South, as Elizabeth Dole lost in North Carolina, and Saxby Chambliss in Georgia was forced into a runoff after only leading the November election by 3%. South Carolinians probably didn’t have the stomach to “primary” Graham out of the Senate, so Graham got a pass in 2008.

It IS a shame that the state that gave us Jim DeMint also gave us Lindsey Graham. Hopefully, cooler heads in the Senate will prevail, and Grahamnesty with Upchuck Schumer will go nowhere.

Steve Z on March 11, 2010 at 1:01 PM

Muy Bien! Senator Graham. Healthcare is not the governments business, but immigration most certainly is. I would like to see border security reform for sure and a path to citizenship makes sense to me for a few specific cases. Nobody in Washington has the balls to demand immediate deportation, so obstructing reform really is an offense to our founders intent. Calling any reform amnesty period end of the discussion makes no sense. Unless you are satisfied with the status quo which is only going to worsen with a vengeance when the economy starts growing again. Immigration threads are so predictable and bring out the absolute hate in some people. Shame.
