Lindsey Graham to Obama: Let’s “step it up” and get to work on amnesty already

posted at 9:33 pm on March 10, 2010 by Allahpundit

I’m trying hard to convince myself that this is actually a devilishly clever scheme by Graham to set a political trap for Democrats by pushing the issue now.

But I’m losing the argument.

“At the end of the day, the president needs to step it up a little bit,” Graham told POLITICO on Tuesday. “One line in the State of the Union is not going to do it.”

For the past six months, Graham and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) — who meet with Obama at 3 p.m. Thursday — have worked on a reform framework. Their plan, which hasn’t been introduced yet, includes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants (a liberal must-have) while sweetening the pot for moderates by proposing tough new safeguards, including a biometric national ID card for workers…

Graham said he wants a greater sense of direction to break the cycle of distrust that doomed comprehensive immigration reform during the Bush administration, despite the support of a Republican president and major party figures like Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

I think moderate Democrats have to come on board before you get Republicans, and Republicans have to come on board before you get Democrats,” said Graham…

The hope … is to build a consensus around a measure that could pass sometime in the not too distant, non-election-year future.

They know they’ll never get Blue Dogs to commit this year, so the idea is … what? To woo a bunch of centrist Democrats now who might very well end up being tossed out in November anyway? Even if they brought a few around, is there even a single Republican who’d move an inch on this with the tea party crowd watching suspiciously? McCain supposedly hasn’t so much as spoken to Graham about it and top RINO Susan Collins says she’s “not even thinking about it.” The best I can do to justify Graham’s lobbying is to imagine that it’s kabuki designed to impress upon Latino voters how reluctant The One is to fulfill his promise to them. (“[D]elay obviously adds to disillusionment,” says amnesty shill Robert Menendez.) See, it’s the Republicans who want to get to work on this, so open-borders advocates should vote (or rather, not vote) accordingly in November — never mind the fact that watching the GOP inevitably backtrack from that posture if/when the bill does come to the floor next year will only irritate amnesty supporters more. Is that what he’s up to, or is he … really this intent on cramming legalization down America’s piehole? I want to believe.

Oh yeah…I already called and left a message AND spoke with a staffer.
Goober needs to act like a republican with values and ideals that reflect the people that elected him.
AMNESTY IS NOT GOOD FOR THE AMERICAN CITIZENS!
Let’s party like it’s 2007!

They won’t debate this thing until after the elections, that’s for sure.

SoulGlo on March 10, 2010 at 9:36 PM

Maybe he’s trying to make this an election issue. ‘I begged the President to get moving on this issue, but he couldn’t lead, and nothing got done’. Who knows. These days, nothing makes sense.

joejm65 on March 10, 2010 at 9:37 PM

Graham needs to be tossed for the GOP caucus. I can’t think of anything else that can be done to get it through his thick head that he is a pariah and should be shunned by anyone with a brain.

It won’t change any of his votes, so I don’t see any downside for the GOP. Graham must be tossed out of the caucus. Nothing else gets through to this treasonous retard.

neurosculptor on March 10, 2010 at 9:37 PM

There needs to be attrition before there is amnesty. If Democrats are so into Darwinism, then shut off every immigrant revenue stream, tax the hell out of the billions that fly south every year, nix healthcare and schooling stuff for them and turn up the pain train for a good five years—-if there are any illegal aliens remaining after that, hell, let ‘em stay, they’re certainly survivors.

Everyone else, line up at the gate. Recruit talent. Show your passport and pay the fee. Stay away from the fence.

Policy.

ted c on March 10, 2010 at 9:38 PM

Er .. I meant “tossed from the GOP caucus”.

neurosculptor on March 10, 2010 at 9:38 PM

WHAT IS WRONG WITH HIM!? SHUT UP, LINDSEY!

I can’t take much more. First the mind-effing with ObamaCare and now they want to throw freaking amnesty in the works too, now that they’ve come up with all these “clever” schemes to pass massively unpopular legislation and give us commoners the middle finger in the process?

Tipping point…it’s coming. SOON.

If McCain could not get the latino votes, how can any other republican? A republican who believes in pulling yourself up by your booth straps and not relying on government freebies will NEVER win the latino vote, EVER.

I’m trying hard to convince myself that this is actually a devilishly clever scheme by Graham to set a political trap for Democrats by pushing the issue now.

If it is a trap, it’s a brilliant one. Grahamnesty is the perfect guy for the job since he has a track record of supporting amnesty(as if the nickname didn’t already make that clear). Plus he isn’t up for reelection til 2014 so he has nothing to fear in terms of backlash from his constituents.

Regardless of whether or not the GOP is playing Obama, I do hope he pivots to amnesty after Obamacare. At the rate he’s alienating the public, the Dems will be lucky to still be in triple digits in the House after November.

Doughboy on March 10, 2010 at 9:40 PM

Graham is a moron. McCain will be long gone, and we’ll still probably be stuck with this arsehole for many years to come.

therightwinger on March 10, 2010 at 9:40 PM

To quote a Tea Partier at a SC townhall meeting to Grahamnesty:

‘When are you gonna switch to the other side and call yourself a Democrat?’

Dick Turpin on March 10, 2010 at 9:41 PM

I think because of his girl name he is trying to act Machismo.

immigrantchick on March 10, 2010 at 9:41 PM

I hope that Graham is pushing a no-win trap. If he seriously believes in amnesty then he must be stopped. Mark Levin is convinced that Graham is working against the Constitution. We should examine Levin’s arguments, and then act accordingly.

Lindsey Graham to Obama: Let’s “step it up” and get to work on amnesty already

Of course you do…

FontanaConservative on March 10, 2010 at 9:46 PM

But the appetite for a huge new push in immigration is as weak as it has been in years, with moderates like Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) — ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee — saying it’s not even on her radar.
“I’m not even thinking about it,” she said.

And Graham’s friend McCain, now facing a tough primary challenge from anti-immigration-reform conservative J.D. Hayworth, said he hasn’t even spoken with Graham about supporting the latest proposal.

And he offered low marks for Obama’s immigration reform efforts since taking office: “I don’t know what he’s done, so I don’t know how to comment on his performance,” McCain said of his 2008 opponent, adding that any attempt at reform would be “very, very difficult in this environment.”

It’s not a trap. Grahamnesty is simply an open borders idiot.

Grahamnesty doesn’t know when to shut his pie hole.

amerpundit on March 10, 2010 at 9:46 PM

The immigration rate needs to be tied to the unemployment rate…

And if these people are put on the path of legalization, they need to be put in the back of the line… and nobody should cross the line till the virtual fence if finished…

Midas on March 10, 2010 at 9:47 PM

Graham isn’t that clever. And he wouldn’t do anything to make shamnesty fail again, because he is a true believer in shamnesty.

A second fail would doom it for years, especially if the GOP takes the House this year. He wouldn’t want that.

Wethal on March 10, 2010 at 9:47 PM

Lyndsey Graham – lion of the senate! Roar, lion, roar your brave and resounding roar!

This guy reminds me of a priggish, pious middle-school vice principal who still lives with his mother.

rrpjr on March 10, 2010 at 9:47 PM

How can there be a post about Graham talking treasonous amnesty again, without noting his tag line – delivered in a speech of his to that racist, anti-American group of slimeballs, La Raza:

“We’re gonna tell the bigots to shut up.”

Now, that is classic Graham and he has never had to pay for what he did, in his great effort to destroy the GOP (with his butt-buddy) during the shamnesty debacle.

neurosculptor on March 10, 2010 at 9:52 PM

includes a path to citizenship

Forget the millions of LEGAL immigrants that have jumped through hoops, not a fence, to come here…waiting years and years. This cheapens American citizenship.

for undocumented immigrants

Kind of like unlicensed pharmacists..oh yeah, we have those coming over the flipping border too…they’re called drug runners.
Call it what it is~illegal aliens that have broken the law to come here to suckle the teat of America….they don’t citizenship, they want a free ride.

(a liberal must-have)

Ahem, a sure guarantee that trash like Pelosi and Reid and obama will be in power forever.

This is very easy to fix~require E-Verify…if the employer is still hiring illegals, that is proof positive that THEY KNEW and they can cool their heels in prison……stop the jobs and the welfare, and the illegals will go back home!
And, quit messing with CBP and allow them to do their damn jobs.
And, Graham, this pitchfork’s for YOU!

No national ID card… GTFO… build the damn fence already, not a surveillance society…

Tie immigration to the unemployment rate… build the virtual fence… pass the start-up visa program…

A friend of mine spent time w/ SEN Graham (a COL in the SC NG) in Afghanistan last year. There’s more than meets the eye with this guy. There’s more than carte blance going “voila” –amnesty in there. Believe me, I don’t like that idea, but there has to be some reconciliation between who is here, who wants to come here, and what happens with them. IMO, there should be encouragement to return to their native country and enter legally–and it should be harsh encouragement. If not, our sovereignty suffers. That’s the biggest threat to liberty, an erosion of sovereignty and our rules of law.

LINDSAY GRAHAM……RINO AMERICAN TRAITOR!!!!

PappyD61 on March 10, 2010 at 9:54 PM

A reminder about the treachery of MCCAIN-Kennedy 2007:

1. It was MCCAIN who co-authored the bill in 2006 and then brought it back in 2007 (TWICE!!)

2. In 2006 version, a generous 90 day period was allowed for DHS – ICE and FBI – to do health checks and background checks on 12 to 20 million illegal aliens who could apply for a Z visa = legalization and pathway to citizenship. If DHS didn’t reject the applicant within 90 days, the illegal alien was granted an immediate Z visa.

3. In 2007, MCCAIN changed the 90 days to ONE BUSINESS DAY!

How many illegal aliens would have been granted a Z visa simply because DHS couldn’t process 12 to 20 million applications in a single day???

MCCAIN and GRAHAMNESTY – how many???

What slimeballs.

Look, realistically, it might be hard to send ‘em all home… Hey, maybe we’ll have to have some form of amnesty… but here’s the thing… Enforce the law and re-establish our sovereignty, THEN we can talk amnesty. This is just like Obama talking about eventually cutting the spending (really freezing the spending) and then throwing gobs of money out a window.

Here’s the thing, Meat. Many, if not most, illegal aliens have allegience to their home country. They come here to work, to milk the system, to commit crimes, besides the one they committed by crossing over the border illegally. They don’t care about American citizenship. They just want to suckle from the teat, send the money home, not pay taxes, and give us the finger for our troubles.
If they really want to be here, they need to go home and fill out the paperwork and wait their turn….and, stop telling us how to run our country…fix your own first!
We DO need to work the immigration system to the employment rate…true true true. And, make it easier to come here, if we need you….and, make sure they are able to work.

Graham is worse than McCain! Amnesty for illegals? No, no, and no! I am the party of NO!

Are our Southern and Northern borders secure? No, I don’t think so. Therefore anything we implement is not going to work, but will only make thing worse in the long run. Why must Congress ALWAYS do everything ass backwards?!

How about changing the law on anchor babies first? It is a insane law, no doubt cooked up by Liberals!

No medical care, no education, no jobs, and no financial aid or support. Stop all the freebies, and they will self deport.

It has been said that it is impractical/impossible to deport them. We won’t know until we try! One at a time if we must works for me. It will take a while, but so what. Progress is progress.

Don’t give a damn about “labor” help, and sure don’t care about more voters. That in fact, is the ONLY reason both parties want them made legal. Good for the party, but not so good for the country. Gee, that sounds familiar!

No, no, no! Not now, not next week, not next year. NEVER! They broke U.S. law so why reward them.

Perhaps we would do better to look at out immigration laws, and possibly make some changes there to allow for easier immigration under controlled circumstances. I do understand and empathize with their desire to come here, but it MUST be done legally! We need someone in the White House and Congress with the stones to get it done!

Translation: McCain’s suck up to La Raza
By Michelle Malkin • July 14, 2008 12:04 PM

While John McCain’s lips move this afternoon during his speech to the Race’s open-borders lovefest, let me serve as your interpreter:

MCCAIN: My friends, you are right. Those people who killed my shamnesty bill have ill intentions. They are bigots, just like my friend Lindsay Graham told you they were when he spoke before you two years ago.

My friends, I don’t want to talk about securing the border any more than you do. But trust me, when the “border” is “secure” (wink, wink, nudge, nudge), then we’ll do what we all want to do: Formalize our Sanctuary Nation. Rejoice that illegal aliens are serving in the military. And sanctimoniously demonize and marginalize all those pesky bigots who keep obsessing about immigration enforcement and national security. I’m as committed to peddling sob-story platitudes and whitewashing your ethnic nationalism as you are! (What was that about the 15 things about The Race you should know? Shhhhhhhhhhh!)

Just work with me here, ok? Brother Obama may have marched with you at the Chicago May Day illegal alien parade. But I have a lifetime commitment to Hispandering! And you have showered with me with honors for my open-borders work.

Remember?

They don’t call me La Raza’s voice in Washington for nothing.

These are the kinds of Gringo minds that I like best. Juan and Lindsio and Barrio all have them. I can manipulate and control a sick unstable power hungry Gringo mind much better than a healthy one. That is why I will be successful and you Gringos will all have to learn to speak Spanish or be deported to New Orleans.

If they thought 80% of Americans were crazy mad before.

Go ahead, make their day.

“I think moderate Democrats have to come on board before you get Republicans, and Republicans have to come on board before you get Democrats,” said Graham…

Shmucky Schumer is a moderate democrat now?
I wish Graham would just go away already……

JeffinOrlando on March 10, 2010 at 11:08 PM

You slimy lawyer. You. It is because of people like you and John McCave that we are in this situation. You are a sucker. The most spineless and opportunistic character I have ever seen.

PS: No matter what you do, I am going to work full time to ensure that you never return to Senate again. And Yes I will say this. Even if that means electing a demoncrat.

PPS: Hey Mavericky McCave…. I just donated to JD. It is time for you to take your Jelly balls and go home.

Grahamnesty is acting as McShame’s proxy for this legislation. McShame knows that if Repubs win in Nov. then amnesty is DOA. But, if Grahamnesty can get the Dems to pass McShame’s amnesty legislation, McShame can keep his hands clean.

Grahamnesty and McShame are tighter than two peas in a pod. Grahamnesty doesn’t take a dump without Juan’s permission.

It’s not a trap. Grahamnesty is simply an open borders idiot.

He really is a ridiculous asshole.

Jaibones on March 10, 2010 at 11:38 PM

And then another one in ten years?

These people are insane.

What happened to, “first we stop the crossings at the border, and then we talk about the ones that are already here.”?

They lied. They never finished the mission.

The reason a large majority of Americans were unwilling to compromise on illegal immigration was because Congress had ZERO credibility on controlling the border. And they want to bring it up once more after proving, yet again, that they CANNOT be trusted on immigration…and this time with high unemployment?

I am beginning to believe there is a growing sentiment in this country similar to those during the days of Louis XVI. I shudder to think.

Let us stop talking like this. What great state? Shame on you South Carolina Voters. How did you send this tool to Senate? Shame on you South Carolina Republicans. Is this the best candidate that you can give?

Even Nebraskan’s are better than you. At least they chased Ben Nelson around. Come On FOLKS. DO SOMETHING. Don’t just sit on your a$$e$.

I’ll go for amnesty as long as we annex Mexico, fire every Mexican politician, and pump every last drop of oil out of her.

daesleeper on March 11, 2010 at 12:20 AM

I said it on the other Graham thread today and I’ll repeat:

I think he is setting himself up for 2012 Presidential run.

This is too scary to me for words but look at all the things he’s been taking the lead on — immigration, crap & tax, trading Gitmo closing money for KSM tribunals — and how insistent he has been and vocal in his fear of the tea party movement, Glenn Beck, and even his banshee shrieking about the GOP losing the youth vote if it doesn’t embrace AGW.

He’s all Gang of (insert your number dependent on issue) and bi-partisany and he turns up about every other day on Greta Van Susteren’s show.

This. Must. Stop. Now. Lindsey is trying out for the lead role in “The New Maverick”.

Greyledge Gal on March 11, 2010 at 12:29 AM

The last Senate RINO to totally not ‘get it’… McCain said 3 years ago ‘I hear you loud and clear’ and finally started to realizing that Dems cannot be his friends… The Lobster Twins have been fairly strong on the party line for the last 6 months… But Lindsey wants to snatch defeat from the jaws of Victory…

DIAF… and you don’t even have to take Snowe and Collins with you

phreshone on March 11, 2010 at 12:39 AM

It’s funny but you could look at a photo of Lindsay Graham and, without knowing one thing about who he is and what he does and what his views are, know immediately that he is a douchebag. In fact that was precisely my experience.

Late to the party, but we share your pain. Lindsey is no worse than Lugar, sadly.

indypat on March 11, 2010 at 12:50 AM

or is he … really this intent on cramming legalization down America’s piehole? I want to believe.

I’m not so sure it’s “cramming”. There are more than a few of us who are libertarian in the Lincolnian direction of free immigration. Let those who want to work come and work, and let them be immediate legal contributors to our economy.

unclesmrgol on March 11, 2010 at 1:38 AM

Lindsey… that milkaholic

fullogas on March 11, 2010 at 1:56 AM

What an opportunist prick whore. Lindsey Graham senses Obambi’s desperation for inflicting some grand progressive legislative catastrophe upon us. Moderates and indecisives left him like a bad smell, so they’d both be desperate for the hispanic voting bloc to shore them both up. There’s a lot of illegals in SC.

I’m calling you out, fellow South Carolinians. Sorry I haven’t lived there (Columbia) since college in 1976, but I’ll contribute to any great Tea Party-type candidate that runs against him, and help as much as I can with all my family and friends there. (as if they’ll need my encouragement ;^) Make me proud to purchase my high-class retirement home some day back in SC.

So I guess your wish is to invite a bunch of marxist in like Lincoln did, give them positions like generals, cabinets positions and let them control the media so they can start another war. GREAT PLAN, btw did you make sure you sent your donation to the socialst party this month.
