Open thread: Massa chats with Glenn Beck

posted at 4:52 pm on March 9, 2010 by Allahpundit

A must-see, not only because of the potential for dirt-dishing about the Democratic caucus but to watch how Beck handles the clamor among righties that Massa can’t be trusted. It ain’t just Bob Lonsberry and the boss emeritus now: Rush Limbaugh dismissed Massa earlier today as a “legitimate kook” and the Standard warned this morning that its sources on the Hill say the ethics report will be damning. And no wonder. Just across the wire at Politico:

The House ethics committee has received allegations that former Rep. Eric Massa groped at least three male staffers and conducted himself improperly with interns as well as full-time aides, a source familiar with the matter tells POLITICO.

One incident allegedly occurred when Massa traveled to San Francisco with an aide for a fundraising trip, a second source said.

WaPo reported a few hours ago that the allegations date back at least a year and involve a “pattern of behavior.” Lonsberry also claimed to have heard of Massa touching at least two men inappropriately during his naval career — and that was before any of the congressional accusations surfaced. Shrewd move by House Democrats to get ahead of the news cycle and leak this stuff shortly before Massa sits down with Beck — doubtless the new groping claims will dominate the coverage of the interview afterward — but don’t let Ace’s point slip by the boards:

Beck sort of has a point here, if he can manage it without giving credence to Massa’s convoluted claims: We would never see these leaks against Massa if he were a Democrat in Good Standing.

It’s not so much that Massa is innocent so much as his guilt would be entirely irrelevant to the Democrats and the media if he were voting the right way.

Yeah, in Bizarro World the lefty outcry over Republican homophobia for criticizing this proud ObamaCare supporter shakes the very earth beneath our feet.

Here’s your thread. I’m assuming Beck will be appropriately skeptical of this guy’s shpiel in light of the new harassment details, but for a guy who famously (and appropriately) mistrusts politicians, he sure did seem a little less mistrustful than usual for awhile.

About what I expected. Beck didn’t let him get away with any bs, to his benefit. I would have questioned him hard on why he ever decided to become a congressman in the first place.

Most Americans don’t personally know anyone as worthless as an elected Democrat.

Buddahpundit on March 9, 2010 at 6:02 PM

Bet Ailes is laughing his a.s.s. off about this. From now on, they’ll be razzing him at Fox and calling this Beck’s Massa Moment.

TXUS on March 9, 2010 at 6:02 PM

Well, maybe this was useful…if finishes off Massa as anything but a corrupt lefty Dem hack who got thrown under the bus by his party. Now there is no question in anybody’s mind about it.

AUINSC on March 9, 2010 at 6:00 PM

Add that someone must have gotten to him with the “keep yer piehole shut, you have a nice family there, shame if something……”

tru2tx on March 9, 2010 at 6:02 PM

Jon Stewart is gonna have a field day with this interview

TruUSA on March 9, 2010 at 6:02 PM

This will not hurt Beck in my opinion.

It really showcased what scummy liars we have in Congress.

Was that Becks point in all of this?

Knucklehead on March 9, 2010 at 6:03 PM

Well, this was a complete waste of time, but I don’t think it’ll have any long-term bad effect on Glenn.

Emily M. on March 9, 2010 at 6:01 PM

I dont think so either. Levin will have fun with this tonight with his regular Glenn hate. Rush and a few others will take their usual stabs at him. Glenn will continue to be successful. Im sure he learned somethign from this. Im still surprised he devoted a full hour without knowing what he was going to get. I was sure Glenn knew he was going to get something specific. Like I said earlier, GB shouldve started this off with just a segment or two, and only went the full hour if we was actually getting stuff out of Massa.

bucsox79 on March 9, 2010 at 6:03 PM

O’Reilly will have the body language expert on to dissect Masssa’s wide stance during the interview.

portlandon on March 9, 2010 at 6:05 PM

Don’t know why I have to put in periods to write what a word that I’ve written or seen a 1000 times here, meaning rear end or butt. Let’s see if that can get through.

TXUS on March 9, 2010 at 6:05 PM

Big deal…Geraldo had Al Capone’s vault…Beck has this.

LtE126 on March 9, 2010 at 6:05 PM

Resist the temptation, Michelle.

Beck, what was ya thinkin’?

donh525 on March 9, 2010 at 5:59 PM

Malkin was saying he shouldn’t trust the guy or it might reflect negatively on Beck if something else drops about Massa. Beck did not coddle him or treat him as some truth-teller. Beck was skeptical throughout the whole interview. So I don’t know why she should be the one to say that, considering that nothing she said happened.

Here’s Rush today on Massa:
We’re not embracing Democrat kook Massa

Jenfidel on March 9, 2010 at 6:06 PM

One thing I learned. Stupid people like Massa are running this country and think 534 other equally stupid people are qualified to budget, run business, manage the economy and health care. God help us all!

MaiDee on March 9, 2010 at 6:06 PM

Oh, the irony of this. All pols are spending half their day trying to raise money for themselves while the country is going down the tubes financially.

shomegirl on March 9, 2010 at 6:07 PM

From this mornings Beck/Michelle thread:

On the other hand, I usually turn off Beck’s show when he dedicates an entire hour to a single guest.

FloatingRock on March 9, 2010 at 1:46 PM

I wish I had taken my own advice. That was a total waste of an hour.

FloatingRock on March 9, 2010 at 6:08 PM

Great, Fox News, the only non-Internet media outlet covering Obamacare critically, gets run off the rails for two days.

Special Report is even covering this non-story.

BuckeyeSam on March 9, 2010 at 6:09 PM

If Larry King’s people are reading this… you’re not going to get an hours worth of material out of this guy… you need something on deck… hit Massa hard at first and keep going as long as it’s interesting…

ninjapirate on March 9, 2010 at 6:09 PM

I’d like to see Bill O get hold of this guy- Glenn was way too softball, let him make it all about himself …. He had no specific information on the corruption and btw when constituents write to a member of congress saying they supported them and expected them to vote a certain way on a bill, after all they are supposed to be representing their constituents- YEEEEEESSSSHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!Michelle nailed this one, Glenn has some sucking up to do!

huskerdiva on March 9, 2010 at 6:09 PM

There was “supposedly” debate on whether to trust Massa. I think Glenn cleared that up. Not a total loss for some perhaps.

Ronnie on March 9, 2010 at 6:09 PM

What I walked away from this interview is that we know that there is corruption in the beltway but would be shocked at how bad it really is as Massa appeared to present. I am sure Massa knew this as well until he became a congressman and saw it for himself. He was upset at being intimidated and molded into something that he didn’t like.

Electrongod on March 9, 2010 at 6:09 PM

Yes, that was a waste of 1 hour. I think this guy is still intimidated or bought off and won’t spill the beans. He says things but won’t back them up with specifics.

Mirimichi on March 9, 2010 at 6:09 PM

Well, this was a complete waste of time, but I don’t think it’ll have any long-term bad effect on Glenn.

A weasley, nobody politician looking for his 60 minutes of fame. Shi*, no wonder normal, everyday people are starting to run for office. How in the he!! did this guy ever get elected for anything?

Colorado Anne on March 9, 2010 at 6:10 PM

Are all of this guy’s kids accounted for?

thomasaur on March 9, 2010 at 5:53 PM

Right on. This guy’s willingness to talk certainly evaporated between yesterday and today. I should have looked to see if he was blinking “SOS” with his eye blinks.

bofh on March 9, 2010 at 6:10 PM

I think it was worthwhile. Massa was exposed as not willing to turn on his corrupt brethren. He’s been defused imo. Without Beck doing this interview, Massa could have remained the man in the shadows who might have some real inside info.
He offered nothing.

Was the show a letdown as far as entertainment expectations go?..yeah. But important things aren’t always entertaining. This is a dropped piece of paper that you pick up and drop in the trash. Move on.

Itchee Dryback on March 9, 2010 at 6:10 PM

The upshot is that Massa is pretty much a loyal Democrat. You can’t elect any of them.

JKahn913 on March 9, 2010 at 6:10 PM

Hey ya’ll, give Glenn a break. Anyone who has a liberal/lieing/democrat/moron/etc. on his show and TRIES to get some honest (cough) answers from this is a hero in my book. Glenn tried and it didn’t work out. The moron Massa brought his FAMILY on the show. We all know that Glenn is a strong family man and will not dis anyone with their family right there. I wouldn’t either. I believe that if you need to “call someone down”, you don’t do it in front of anyone. This little punk Massa just got a little more time for his memoirs. He is a….oh never mind…you know what I want to say but I don’t want to get banned.

sicoit on March 9, 2010 at 6:11 PM

I missed this thread as I was on the other one. Haven’t read the comments, but Glenn was had. This is what Michelle was trying to warn him about – he should have listened. The Dems have to be laughing right now. I think Glenn came out looking bad.

RD on March 9, 2010 at 6:11 PM

The whole country could go full to empire with a full emperor and as long as it does not affect you have at it apathy prevails. Beck wanted to wake the apathy, Massa did not do anything to change this apathy so it does not affect you or anyone else.

tjexcite on March 9, 2010 at 6:12 PM

We now know how low you have to be before the D party will go after you: damn low and actually not voting the ‘right way’.

If he had voted the ‘right way’, I have no doubt that Massa would not have been ratted out. And rats they all are.

Proud Rino on March 9, 2010 at 6:13 PM

Levin just referrer to the interview as a “train wreck” and is reading today’s new allegations. Also mentioned that he tried to get Massa on his show yesterday.

Back to “Special Report” for me, I can listen to Mark’s podcast tomorrow.

darwin-t on March 9, 2010 at 6:13 PM

Bad format for Massa. His general rhetoric would have been ok on another show. Beck wanted Massa to say ‘On January 11 at 3:57 in the afternoon, Nancy Pelosi and two union leaders offered me an envelope with $15k and told me that more would follow if I voted yes on healthcare. I saved the envelope so you can check it for prints, and I secretly recorded the conversation. Take it from here, Glenn’. Nothing short of that would have made Beck happy. And still, his ratings were probably great, and they’ll be better tomorrow, cause people will tune in to watch him have a meltdown and completely eviserate Massa. Must see TV…

joejm65 on March 9, 2010 at 6:13 PM

Shhhh. Levin is building his case ….

BrideOfRove on March 9, 2010 at 6:14 PM

Thanks Michelle . I was able to get a nap .

borntoraisehogs on March 9, 2010 at 6:14 PM

The debacle was entirely Becks fault, because he’s a lousy interviewer. A good interviewer could’ve either illuminated Massa as a truth-teller or destroyed Massa as a liar. Beck did neither, because Beck doesn’t know how to interview.

RBMN on March 9, 2010 at 6:14 PM

At least GB had the decency to apologize for the wasted hour. Maybe if Massa had a backbone or wasn’t threatened in some manner it could have been more than a snore festival.

fourdeucer on March 9, 2010 at 6:14 PM

I am a regular Beck viewer. Glenn you lost me on interviewing Massa. He was evasive and illogical. I did nothing wrong, but I am going to resign because I did not live up to my own standards? Sounds like he did something he regrets. Yet Glenn didn’t ask him that question. Total waste of my time.

Angry Dumbo on March 9, 2010 at 6:14 PM

You guys are missing the big picture. This whole episode paints the White House and Dems in a very bad light. Just what they don’t need while trying to ram Obamacare thru.

This guy can’t just name “names” and risk being sued for slander/libel, etc. Will Beck protect this guy and his family if he did? If he’s smart, he’ll save it for his book deal.

Btw – check it out – Drudge has some blazing headlines re: this whole Massa mess. This is not good PR for the Dems or Obama.

The little that Beck did get out of Massa was basically true. Massa said Congress doesn’t work because everybody is for sale, and if you’re not for sale, they don’t let you do anything. Sounds about right to me.

I don’t know if it was a complete loss. If nothing else, we were reminded that:

1. voters don’t do any research on candidates — apparently, many voters just go to the booth and vote for the (R) or (D). No way this guy could have been voted in by an “informed” electorate.

2. there are a lot of idiots in Washington who need to be watched. Having today’s evidence should warn us to not turn our backs on these jerks.

3. politicians aren’t in office for the people. They are in office for themselves.

Heaven help us all. We’re at the mercy of the idiots in Washington and the uninformed electorate.

Beck seemed to have been expecting Massa to be one of the “inside the beltway” people caught up in the shenanigans who would turn towards his/the call for basically honorable politicians or staff and/or bureaucrats to do the right thing and turn into a whistle blower.

Obviously, Massa never caught those earlier Glenn Beck shows covering whistle blowers who would ultimately be backed up by the voting public for standing up and joining the fight against those who seemed to be engineering and/or profiting from the destruction of the U.S.A.

Apparently, Massa’s only purpose in going on Beck’s show was to finagle an opportunity to jump in front of the rumors and allegations in order to paint himself as a victim of his own party’s machinations and the beltway’s culture of character assassination which befalls those who go against conventional wisdom, aka: party politics.

KendraWilder on March 9, 2010 at 6:29 PM

This was no different then all the Rod Blagojevich interviews. Beck, Hannity, and O’Reiily did those. They were all a waste of time too. It’s all about ratings. I still don’t see why Michelle and others thought this was a bad idea. It was a waste of time but nothing more.

Angry Dumbo on March 9, 2010 at 6:33 PM

Why does anyone even think this was a waste of time? It exposed Massa for what he is. What’s wrong with that? Glenn was on a fact-finding mission and he did the best he could.

This is not a bad reflection on Glenn Beck. It could have been some fluffy interview like some media types do.

I get more dirt out of my colostomy.

But we were treated to how much of a victim Massa is for suffering from terminal cancer for…11 years, how we, the people need to get involved and call our Congressman, how the ‘system’ is bought and paid for by the unions, lobbyists, that both parties are equally to blame and that Rahm Emmanuel was apparently neither threatening or intimidating with his finger poking – and that one man, even a Congressman, can’t do anything about any of the BS going on in Washington so it’s best just to give up.

Oh and that Massa did nothing criminal or really innappropriate other than a “tickle party”, but that was cause enough for him to resign his seat and that Massa takes full responsibility for what he did, even though what he did wasn’t really that bad if all he did is what he’s implying he did – or didn’t do.

Yeah, this Massa guy, really a paragon of integrity and principles…

Maybe next time Glenn won’t overhype the interview and just take it as it comes. Glenn is always looking for someone to “save America.” This reminds me of the last time he interviewed Sarah Palin. His questions were more his talking points rather than what Sarah had to say.

sarahpalinfan99 on March 9, 2010 at 6:44 PM

flash044 on March 9, 2010 at 6:21 PM

1. In a breaking story like this, you don’t have time to vet. If you can get the interview, you book it. And Beck got it first. What broadcaster wouldn’t have wanted first crack at this guy? And who else would be considered a failure if the guy doesn’t dish?

2. From what I gather, based on a brief conversation with Massa, he thought he could get the guy to flip. He didn’t. Oh well. I’ll refer back to my second comment on the thread, quoting Beck:

“I think it’s safe to say I have absolutely no idea what’s going to happen.”

You can’t win if you don’t play.

That said, dedicating the hour didn’t work out well.

Pablo on March 9, 2010 at 6:46 PM

Tyra Banks could have done a harder hitting interview…

ninjapirate on March 9, 2010 at 6:48 PM

Beck needs to explain something to me, why is he so critical and skeptical of Mossa resigning…but doesn’t put forth the same skepticism to Sarah Palin? Mossa said the same thing she said, that he couldn’t make much of a difference from the inside, but Beck is critical of one and accepting of the other. Mow I am a huge Palin fan, but she still hasn’t given a coherent explanation for her resignation and Beck’s treatment of her, compared to Mossa, was only highlighted in this interview which was a big waste of time.

Everyone can make mistakes though, but this is like Obama going to Copenhagen befoere having the Olympics in the bag. I thought for sure Beck had gotten something juicy out of this guy, and verified it, before the interview. What the hell was this? Michelle was right, thankfully I don’t think this does any damage other than embarass Beck for a day.

Daemonocracy on March 9, 2010 at 6:49 PM

Malkin called it: The weasel had absolutely no intention whatsoever of doing anything but trying to whitewash his own sleeze. And Beck fell for it hook, line and sinker.

There was no problem whatsoever having the guy on the show. As long as he had the same deal every guest gets: His ugly mug stays on TV for as long as he has something to add to the discussion — and his ass gets kicked off the second he goes off topic.

Guaranteeing this slimewad a full hour ahead of time was exactly the same as giving him a twenty-million-dollar infomercial, free of charge.

It’s pretty obvious Glen Beck was by no means the first guy to get screwed by Massa. But this has to be the guy’s biggest conquest yet.

Is it possible that this whole Massa thing is a fabrication and Massa is getting some kickback from his party?

Electrongod on March 9, 2010 at 6:50 PM

beck just said he wasted an hour and is apologizing.

Emily M. on March 9, 2010 at 5:54 PM

I appreciate the apology but WE TOLD YOU SO! Sheesh, that’s an hour of my life I’ll never get back. I give Glenn credit for owning up to the clusterfark but he should have known better. I think he booked Massa thinking “Wow! This is going to be Van Jones on steroids!” but after the truth started to come out he he couldn’t bail on a show he himself was touting and tried to salvage something that wasn’t salvageable. It was painful to watch.

Why did you watch it?

Pablo on March 9, 2010 at 6:52 PM

I am a huge Palin fan, but she still hasn’t given a coherent explanation for her resignation…

Daemonocracy on March 9, 2010 at 6:49 PM

How can you be a Palin fan and not know why Palin had to step down?

Electrongod on March 9, 2010 at 6:52 PM

Beck did a great job in proving that politicians in general are corrupt self serving a$$holes. We have always known it, but to watch it unfold in front of your eyes is truly sickening.

To any of you, this includes MM, Ed, and their shills, thought that this was going to be an indictment against the dems or to prop up the republicans, you are ignorant of Becks goal. Beck is exposing the culture of corruption in professional politicians. This wasn’t just preaching to the choir. I’d bet thousands of people who normally do not watch his show tuned in today. They got to see the complete immorality of politicians first hand. This guy not only made himself look like a despicable jerk, but he disparaged his family too. Most of us know these minions of Satan don’t care about anyone else, but now the uninitiated have seen that these guys will tie their families to the tracks in order to save their own a$$es.

Expect a huge surge in Tea Party attendance and political activism because of this show.

GREAT JOB GLENN!!!

Hey Beck. Michelle wins!

Decider on March 9, 2010 at 7:07 PM

The debacle was entirely Becks fault, because he’s a lousy interviewer. A good interviewer could’ve either illuminated Massa as a truth-teller or destroyed Massa as a liar. Beck did neither, because Beck doesn’t know how to interview.

RBMN on March 9, 2010 at 6:14 PM

I don’t know. I think Beck has had the two most famous interviews of the last few months. It got all the way to him before that truther lady in Texas was exposed. He made it abundantly clear today that the Massa creep is a creepy creep.

She got part of it right, but here is where she is an ignorant boob.

If you ever wondered what Glenn Beck looks like when he realized he’s been had that’s a good place to start.

Beck was had. He played this the right way and came out a winner. The dems, and politicians in general, will embarrass their families on the second highest rated show on cable in an attempt to save face.

Well played Glenn! How many fence sitters tuned into your show today and saw this first hand and will now get politically active? Thousands I bet.

The wife and I watched her resignation speech live and we both found her reasons to be coherent, straight-forward, refreshing, and honest.

Of course the wife and I are imbeciles.

Beck WASN’T Had.

jnelchef on March 9, 2010 at 6:50 PM

YOU thought that is what it would be. ANYONE who actually listened to what Beck said on the leadup to this realized that Glenn expected nothing except for this guy to be the typical weaselly politician. Considering the thousands of people who tuned in that never have before, that was an eyewitness account of what we all know about politicians but rarely get to see.

The only one that should be embarrassed is you for missing it completely.

csdeven on March 9, 2010 at 7:17 PM

I don’t get why people are so spun up about this. It was a long-shot that Massa was going to really incriminate anyone. The guy’s got lawyers, doesn’t he?

Beck had to give it a shot anyway though, even if the odds were long. It would’ve been stupid not to. And Beck stayed on him to the point where it was clear that the guy either had no smoking gun or was unwilling to produce one.

The loser here isn’t Beck. It’s Massa. Beck handed him one of the biggest megaphones in the business, and Massa failed to make his case. He leaves the political arena with his tail tucked between his legs and under a cloud of suspected perversion.

Generalities, while interesting, aren’t enough to securely claim corruption. Without a “who, what, where, and how”… Massa looks like a noob who couldn’t stand up for himself, rather than a guy who was the victim of attempted political extortion.

Murf76 on March 9, 2010 at 7:19 PM

50 year old men have ‘tickle’ parties? O.o No. That doesn’t sound at all cringe worthy.

His poor family.

I agree that the story needs to be pushed from the Dems cover for corruption if you give them what they want, and destroy you for it if you don’t angle. It really is the point.
