Glenn Beck: Sorry for wasting your time with Massa, America

posted at 7:42 pm on March 9, 2010 by Allahpundit

A complete debacle, and completely riveting. If you missed it, make time for Mediaite’s two highlight reels below. Glynnis MacNicol is spot on:

I think the short version is that the Massa that showed up at Glenn Beck’s desk is definitely not the Massa that was on the other end of Beck’s telephone yesterday. Something that began to be clear to Beck around the 20 minute mark, after Massa refused to get into specific about the corruption of the Dems generally, and Rahm Emanuel specifically. At about the 25 minute mark Glenn Beck starts getting mad. If you ever wondered what Glenn Beck looks like when he realized he’s been had that’s a good place to start.

Precisely. The big sell in having Massa on was that he was, supposedly, about to roll over on Pelosi, Hoyer, etc, for backroom dealings. Instead, this:

Beck finally says, “I don’t want to be a defender of the White House… is there anything SPECIFIC that you have?” Massa still can’t point to any specific examples of Democratic leadership arm-twisting or bullying. Massa finally tries to blame the House Whip for pressuring him to change his vote and likens it to bribery: “I don’t know how to be specific… Its called Whipping!”

Massa can’t seem to come up with any better examples.

Follow the Mediaite link and watch the “bullcrap” clip embedded there. When pressed on corruption, all he could do was blow smoke about how super-keen he thinks the tea party is, etc. In fact, not only didn’t he dish new dirt, he cleaned up some of the dirt he’d already dished: In the first clip below, he dismisses the suggestion that the Dems had forced him out unfairly for his behavior. “I forced myself out,” he says — i.e., he deserved to go. Good work, Massa.

Don’t miss him showing off his “crossing the line” scrapbook. A golden television moment, my friends. Exit question: What exactly was Massa’s goal here? He evidently BS-ed Beck with tall tales of corruption in order to land on the show … but to what end? So that he could mumble about “tickle fights” and pander transparently to Beck about his pet issues? At the very least, you’d expect him to claim he’s being railroaded and didn’t deserve to be pushed out, but he’s not even saying that. What’s the frequency, Kenneth?

A bad opinion, yet one of many. How is this bad for Beck? Did he get suckered into getting too close to Massa that further revelations harm Beck or the broader battle against Obamacare? No. Beck kept his distance, and called him out, and engaged his audience openly at the end in admitting that the interview was a waste of time. Did Beck make Massa the face of GOP opposition against Obamacare? No. All the hand wringing was for nothing. Does this help Massa’s political future? Nope. The guy looks even nuttier now. So how exactly was this bad for Beck, Conservatives, or the battle against Obamacare?

Weight of Glory on March 9, 2010 at 8:22 PM

I take just about everything Beck says with a grain of salt.

Doesn’t everybody?

Beck clearly let himself be set up though. He was obviously expecting something far different…

Massa is a two-bit, pervert, political hack. Nothing will change that. He was also a first term Congressmen. Congress doesn’t reveal its secrets to first termers. It takes years embroiled in the corruption to be able to see where the bodies are buried.

I was afraid that would happen.

He didn’t sound like the same person as yesterday.

Beck wasn’t hurt by this Jerry River’s Vault moment. The same cannot be said about Massa.

My guess is we are at the front end of a super nova of exploding text messages and Mark Foley meets Tiger Woods disclosures without the brilliance.

The man was utterly incoherent: a fiscally conservative progressive who favors a single payer system that presumably covers tickle-fests with grown men and chest pokes.

I attribute his ramblings to his hypoxic state as the air got sucked out of his life, career and marriage.

A navy guy who “saw his best friend die in front of him?” this claim will probably flame out within 12 hours.

Big Orange on March 9, 2010 at 8:28 PM

See? Having him on was completely harmless to the conservative cause.
He wasn’t embraced, he’s nobody’s hero, his story is as out as it’s going to be, and we can move on.

There was no reason for people to be afraid of this, or tell Beck not to do it.

neurosculptor on March 9, 2010 at 8:32 PM

Beck reached out and got bit. At least he tried and as HOTAIR pointed out around the halfway mark you could see him deflate as it sunk in he wasn’t going to get anything new.

The trouble is that Massa had a point. He tells Glenn it is all corrupt. He tells Glenn they spend half their time groveling for cash and actually getting points on how to do it more effectively from the “head office”. Beck seemed to blow past this because we all know they do it. Then he talked about the arm twisting and again Beck blows by it.

It was like if Glenn was trying to interview a mobster and was saying, “Okay beyond the murder, kidnapping, drug dealing and extortion, what do you do that’s criminal?”

Massa looked confused, as the mobster would be. Glenn was looking for something specific that Massa mentioned and refused to talk about today. Glenn mentioned that there could have been four criminal counts brought against Rahm after conferring with Judge Napolitano. I had this happen to me more than once, a CI comes in with a great story we get all excited because it can break the case wide open and then we realize he’s only trying to get from under his own troubles by using us.

Glenn Beck is not a cop. He didn’t see it coming, he only saw the opportunity to break the case. It happens.

I went back to work before Rush could figure out if he had ever mentioned Massa on the show during that time (or ever in fact), but not before Rush played some crappy you tube audio of Massa challenging him to a showdown way back then.

Key here though, is that Michelle brought Rush up to speed on this guy… Just like she did Beck. Pay. Attention. Please… Word to Michelle..

Michelle was wrong too. Beck though Massa was going to spill the beans about insider Dem corruption, all it was was Massa backtracking on yesterday. Michelle thought this would be some kind of death blow to the conservative movement, all it was was Massa backtracking on yesterday.

The only one who walked away from this looking like a moron was Massa.

uknowmorethanme on March 9, 2010 at 8:54 PM

I’d have to disagree that Beck having this guy on, bullcrap interview or not, was a mistake. Massa is newsworthy, and Beck is in the business of attracting eyeballs, whether it’s by using the Swedish Bikini Team, or slo-mo footage of a car wreck. Too bad folks, in this version of the slo-mo car wreck footage, we all missed out on the ‘brains on the highway’ everyone was hoping for, Well shucky-darn.

Beck may have been ‘suckered’ by Massa feeding him a lot more specifics during the booking telephone call, that Massa failed to deliver – but that’s the way it goes. Maybe Beck should have recorded the call and played ‘gotcha’ or something. But that’s woulda, coulda, shoulda.

The glaring mistake, in my opinion, was letting the most incendiary of Massa’s publicized allegations – the Congressional Shower Psycho Scene – slip right by with out asking one very, very useful question – namely “can anybody corroborate this story”, to see if Massa would name any names. Beck definitely dropped the ball in that respect, letting Massa off by simply asking if he was ‘intimidated’ – not whether there was anybody that could back up what will now be described by the Progressives as “tall tale by a wounded man trying to save his own arse”.

I’ve also gotta mention that I do agree with Beck’s basic sentiment over the whole NOOOOO – Don’t embrace this guy schtick. Please – that may not have been the blood and guts headline generator that folks were salivating for, but Beck was nowhere near having anything like a love fest, or even tickle match, with this guy. Not much sympathy from my perspective. Point is, sometimes you have to work with what you have around to work with. Just because the raw material ain’t as pristine, perfumed, and tied up with a nice little bow as some might like, or they’re wrapped up in paranoia that the zombie ain’t really dead and may re-animate from the grave – if that’s what ya gots to work with, then THAT’s the material ya work with, the best you can. Hold your nose, or whatever. Prissiness over the dirty jobs involved with draining the swamps is putting forth less than a maximum effort, no matter how much lifting you’ve been doing or for how long. And berating people willing to make use of what’s at hand, to try and make a go at it – tell them to be careful, by all means, but don’t act like a bunch of British Firefighters standing around while a woman is trapped at the bottom of a well over concerns about the type of rope available to accomplish the task, please.

The glaring mistake, in my opinion, was letting the most incendiary of Massa’s publicized allegations – the Congressional Shower Psycho Scene – slip right by with out asking one very, very useful question – namely “can anybody corroborate this story”, to see if Massa would name any names.

Beck did ask that. Massa said that he didn’t remember who else was there – as he was trying not to look at people and Beck just let it move on.

Abu Dhabi is future base for News Corp: Murdoch

Murdoch said News Corp would headquarter its Middle Eastern global online advertising operations in Abu Dhabi, and move a number of satellite television channels to the capital of the United Arab Emirates from Hong Kong.

“We will (also) establish a production office here for one of our documentary film-making companies,” he said.

“When we look to the future, News Corporation is betting on the creative potential of the more than 335 million people who make up the Arab world,” he added.

News Corp has already established strong links with the region, last month agreeing to invest 70 million dollars in the Rotana Group, which is controlled by Saudi tycoon Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, after buying a 9.0 percent stake in the firm.

Alwaleed’s Kingdom holding company also owns around 7.0 percent of News Corp’s class B common stock.

Beck did ask that. Massa said that he didn’t remember who else was there – as he was trying not to look at people and Beck just let it move on.

neurosculptor on March 9, 2010 at 8:57 PM

Well, if Massa wasn’t willing to offer corroboration, everybody might as well let the whole naked Rahm story go. Completely. Has to be labelled as likely BS, publicly, without regret, and dropped.

Because maintaining that Massa is a lying dirt bag about everything, to include his shoe size, but, oh, we believe the salacious bit about the Chief of Staff, because we really loathe him – that’s gonna fly about as well as a brick. That ain’t got no gas. And at least TWO well known conservative pundits publicly adopted that line; Malkin and Goldberg at NRO.

Squeamish about going near a radioactive Massa, but no qualms undermining their credibility and handing the left ammo. Great job.

Wind Rider on March 9, 2010 at 9:19 PM

I caught a couple minutes of Lawrence Odonnell on MSNBC gloating over Beck’s program tonight – botoxed out of his mind, I might add. Verrry creepy.

Dork B. on March 9, 2010 at 9:20 PM

I’m thinking Massa found a horse head in his bed this morning when he woke up on the day of this interview. His tune changed pretty dramatically from one day to the next — Chicago political tactics at work.

I wondered if anyone knows where Massa’s kids were. Showereing with Rahm?

Wind Rider on March 9, 2010 at 9:19 PM

Good point, but Massa did dig in on the shower scene story, flatly stating that the White House was lying in their denial. Nothing wrong with having the White House and a nutbag dem telling diametrically opposed stories and both calling each other liars. It’s like the Iran-Iraq war. Let them beat each other senseless and fling accusations back and forth.

Personally, I don’t think the shower scene is a big story. The nudity isn’t a big deal, in a gym shower, and Rahmbo trying to be tough isn’t illegal or anything, but if the White House and Massa are going to go to blows over the story, let her rip!

Score a point for Michelle. She said to Beck ‘why are you having this stooge on your show?’. Much like BHO saing he would talk to Iran without preconditions.

Beck was so seduced by what MIGHT be instead of being more skeptical that he missed the larger point – Massa is a BS artist taking advantage of the healthcare vote debacle to let him skip on the ethics investigation.

Beck just had his ‘Capone vault’ moment. I have to say at least he was man enough to own up to it at show’s end.

ArmchairEnergist on March 9, 2010 at 9:25 PM

One of these days, some Democrat will spill the beans. However, I don’t know how we will know the truth because I don’t think there is one Democrat with any credibility. By the way, Levin has chosen to begin his show by once again trashing Beck. I think Levin is more concerned about the demise of Glenn Beck than anything else.

Mwahahahahahahaha….

…..looks like someone fell for a troll. And I’m not referring to either Beck or Massa. (Nah, who am I kidding? AP just wants the hits, and Beck–with or without Massa–provides those hits).

Obvious entertainment TV is obvious.

Thanks for the links!

I hope Beck books some of Massa’s male staff members so he can get to the bottom of all this “salty language”.

Dork B. on March 9, 2010 at 9:27 PM

Thanks Glenn for bringing him on. Up close & personal, this guy is a snake oil salesman. Didn’t get past twenty minutes or so of watching. During the first 10 minutes or so I read this guy like a book. Must be the Mom in me. I know BS when I hear it. Thanks to Glenn we all know it now for ourselves, without the WH BS spin. Sadly, The WH sounds just as sleazy when they start their BS.

He’s a loon-toon.

AprilOrit on March 9, 2010 at 9:30 PM

you know, I watched the whole thing and in real time, yeah you could see Beck getting mad and frustrated, and Massa twisting himself inside out to not say what he was saying, and Beck was spot on about the other shoe to drop and the texts, but on further reflection, he exposed, or really Massa exposed, Massa as a liar. . . but more importantly, Massa, without wanting to really do so, exposed the Dems as rotten to the core, so perhaps it was a worthwhile, if frustrating, exercise.

Willie on March 9, 2010 at 9:31 PM

Rush’s mistake was in his about face on that. GOP participation in the health scare summit was what brought the zombie health care carcass back to be dragged through Congress once again.

The GOP never should have participated in that fiasco. If they had stayed away, we likely wouldn’t be dealing with Dems trying to decide if they’re going to vote for anythign about it, now.

neurosculptor on March 9, 2010 at 9:10 PM

What you said isn’t factual; it’s your opinion, and I believe it is as misguided as MM’s was today in regards to Beck in the exact same way. You don’t understand the concept that the best defense is a good offense.

The Republicans won the day just by appearing and debunking 0bamessiah’s claims that they were the uncooperative “Party of No” with no ideas to share. On top of that, they smoked the Dems in the debate. A complete victory! :)

Out of curiosity, AP: do you also watch Springer and wonder, “that guy that was cheating on 3 girls at once: what was his goal? He evidently BS’d his way to Springer… …but to what end?”

His goal is the same as Massa’s is the same as Beck’s….which, btw, is the same as Hot Air’s, for posting this.

CatsGodot on March 9, 2010 at 9:33 PM

I’m just waiting for the soapy shower scene starring Rahm the ballerina and Massa the liar.

Along the lines of ‘Nailin’ Palin.’

*shudders*

Seriously, I listened into this craptastic interview….he’s a democrat…he’s a rat….what more did you expect.
At least Beck showed him for the louse that Massa is.

In a town, and a job, where image is 95% of the game, being able to label Rahm as “irate naked shower finger poker” is fairly significant. Purile, juvenile, salacious – absolutely. But a purile, juvenile and salacious tidbit capable of bringing an unconscious snicker anytime ‘serious Rahm’ is the subject.

Perhaps you’re right – that the damage is done. The likely SNL skit on this will probably do more to entrench it in the minds of the country than anything Eric Massa might say, short of naming a witness. Still, lacking corroboration, it’s just an anecdotal partisan fairy tale, in which form it will become a downsized version of the ‘all about sex’ wail during the Clinton impeachment.

Either way, it’s likely to be a factor (unspoken) for what I believe is likely to happen if Obamacare truly founders – that Rahm and Dave the Astroturfer will be the underbus victims to be the scape-goats for the failure. I say Axelrod, too, based on the profile piece this last weekend, and the ‘don’t give a flying eff’ line and the defeatist ‘maybe next year’ line. He might as well have been doing a karaoke version of “I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me”. When the Dems realize they can’t get this passed, those two’s days on the job will suddenly be into the double or maybe even single digit range.

This is exactly what I predicted would happen in the other thread this afternoon. It was easy to see coming. Beck built Massa’s story up, even though he had no idea what it was, and Massa took him down. Beck believed Massa because of his own confirmation bias, offered up a whole hour without corroboration or secondary sourcing, and found his own credibility swinging in the wind after Massa failed to deliver the goods on TV.

How anyone can say Beck wasn’t damaged by this I do not know. Because he most certainly was. And if you don’t believe it, wait until Jon Stewart and SNL get a hold of it.

It’s really a shame, because I feel like Beck’s passion for returning to our country’s original traditions is so important. But tonight is a perfect example why the movement can’t be tied to somebody so willing to shoot so dangerously from the hip.

Sorry, GB, we tried to warn ya.

Caustic Conservative on March 9, 2010 at 9:39 PM

I’m pretty sure it was harmful to Beck’s career.
