ESPN: Obama may ban recreational fishing or something

posted at 6:26 pm on March 9, 2010 by Allahpundit

I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that he will not, in fact, ban fishing, but the meta-narrative is so irresistible — elitist President Arugula coming to grab the bitter-clingers’ rods and reels! — that it simply must be blogged.

Odds of a Palin Facebook comment: High.

The Obama administration will accept no more public input for a federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing the nation’s oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters…

Consequently, unless anglers speak up and convince their Congressional representatives to stop this bureaucratic freight train, it appears that the task force will issue a final report for “marine spatial planning” by late March, with President Barack Obama then issuing an Executive Order to implement its recommendations — whatever they may be.

Led by NOAA’s Jane Lubchenco, the task force has shown no overt dislike of recreational angling, but its indifference to the economic, social and biological value of the sport has been deafening…

As ESPN previously reported, WWF, Greenpeace, Defenders of Wildlife, Pew Environment Group and others produced a document entitled “Transition Green” shortly after Obama was elected in 2008. What has happened since suggests that the task force has been in lockstep with that position paper

“With what’s being created, the same principles could apply inland as apply to the oceans,” he said. “Under the guise of ‘marine spatial planning’ entire watersheds could be shut down, even 2,000 miles up a river drainage from the ocean.

“Every angler needs to be aware because if it’s not happening in your backyard today or tomorrow, it will be eventually.

Granted, it’s worrisome that environmentalists seem to have captured the task force, but follow the link for details about how many jobs are at stake if angling gets scaled back dramatically to please the greens. Think The One’s going to hand Republicans that talking point in this political climate? How excited do you suppose red-district Democrats will be to see the White House bring down the hammer on fly fishermen with an election eight months away?

Sport Fishing magazine asked his campaign about new restrictions in September 2008 and got the following answer:

My administration would place the emphasis in fishery management where it belongs: in ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of stocks through the use of effective and appropriate conservation measures. Such an approach would not provide a preference for one management tool, such as a marine reserve, over another. Given sufficient management controls and data, a fishery can meet conservation objectives through a variety of catch controls and habitat-protection measures, including gear restrictions, bag limits or closures. In some cases, additional conservation measures may need to be taken to ensure a positive recreational marine-fishing experience for future generations of Americans. Recreational fishermen have not shirked from embracing such measures when needed to achieve long-term stock sustainability, as long as measures are matched to the problem. While marine reserves may be an effective means of achieving important goals, their use and design must be based on an assessment of impacts and balanced by a strong respect for the ability of recreational anglers to practice their sport. In my view, we need to be open to the use of a variety of innovative conservation tools and be prepared to use them if the science justifies their establishment, and if it has been determined that less-restrictive options will not achieve critical goals like rebuilding fish stocks. The decision to establish marine reserves should be made as a result of a transparent, science-based process and be the least intrusive possible to get the job done. Such a process should include outreach to the sport-fishing community to explain both the scientific basis for the action and the expected conservation benefits to future fishing generations if it is to gain the community’s active support.

That bit about “balance” is an official Barack Obama campaign promise, baby, which means you can take it to the bank. Seriously, though: Given the backlash British pols faced a few years ago when they banned fox hunting (the sport has since flourished and the Tories say they want to repeal it) and given the deep but as yet unfounded suspicions about The One’s designs on guns, why would he pick a completely needless fight with rural voters? Explain to me how this makes sense for him.

Sure, it probably won’t happen. But I’m not comfortable having an administration where something like this is even within the realm of possibility.

I doubt it will be a ban but a new regulation on fishing. Just another charge added to your license to create a larger slush fund for the Feds.

Obama doesn’t want to ban sport fishing, he wants to manage it.

The enviro’s and the EPA have already shut down farming in favor of the Delta Smelt, so what do you thing will come out of this? Only certain, favored groups will be allowed to fish for sport, and only under certain restrictions. It pays to be a well connected, loyal democrat with a fat bank account.

Even as a near critical mass of people have only begun to galvanize and coalesce around the reality of the need to actively resist Obama’s agenda, this would truly be the thing that united Americans against him.

I can’t possibly imagine this gaining any legitimacy, no matter what the heck executive order he signs. People won’t heed it. They’ll just laugh at him if he tries. States will tell him to get a life.

Fishing is a non-partisan activity. Take it from me. I fish leagues and tournaments, and spend at least 2-3 days a week on the water angling and joyriding with the family from the week the ice melts in the spring until it threatens to reform in the fall. Democrats love to fish every bit as much as Republicans, maybe more in some regions.

For the people who truly love it, it is a way of life, far more than just a hobby. If he were to try something like this he would put the final nail in the coffin of his mandate to govern. People who have been straining to give him the benefit of the doubt would finally recognize the illegitimacy of his agenda, and they would simply refuse to obey, refuse to comply, and local governments would refuse to enforce.

He would have as much success enacting this as he would telling people they could no longer attend the church of their choice.

Thing is, regardless of what State laws say, or where the water is located, the federal Government, through various agencies claims absolute jurisdiction over ANY body of navigable water. The claim extends to anything that can be used by a kayak, or even an inner tube. If you can use it to go from one point to another, then the Feds claim jurisdiction over it.

Up here in Maine, it’s getting worse every year for fishermen of all types.

AW1 Tim on March 9, 2010 at 6:34 PM

Such a process should include outreach to the sport-fishing community to explain both the scientific basis for the action and the expected conservation benefits to future fishing generations if it is to gain the community’s active support.

They need outreach to come up with some BS about what they are doing.

Nothing about getting feedback.

These wackjob groups do more damage.

The arrogance is ridiculous. Sportsmen know damn well how to fish/hunt responsibly and benefit future generations.

We certainly don’t need the government, acting on behalf of these WWF, IFAW nuts to tell us what to do.

I don’t understand the question. If you mean it’s unlikely he’ll do stupid things that make him look bad, then just start with buzzing NYC with AF1 and work your way up to his leaving the US to bring back the Olympics. If you’re saying he wouldn’t risk hurting his party’s chance in reelection in 2010 and 2012, well, you know that’s not the case. If you’re saying that he wouldn’t do anything that would hurt him politically, he’s already said he could care less about being reelected if it means the nation could experience all of his awesomeness in on term. So what do you mean, “how it makes sense for him.”

Maybe it is a big dog and pony show. This will give the blue dogs an opportunity to yell and scream, he’ll back down, and it will be a (very weak) effort to show that these blue dogs are independent thinkers and Obama is capable of being persuaded by them.

I know I go fishing in Stupak’s district, and I am sure this is a big recreational activity in many of these southern blue dog districts also. If there is any truth to this, it almost has to be just an opportunity for some key reps to demonstrate some level of independence. They wouldn’t really go through with something like this, would they?

Fred 2 on March 9, 2010 at 6:43 PM

Why would he try to take over healthcare or propose cap and trade? He wants to control every aspect of our lives. Do you think he isn’t arrogant enough to do something like this? Ask Michigan about the great concern the ONE has shown about the Asian Carp that are in the Chicago Canal and are on the verge of invading the Great Lakes. That alone will destroy the fishing industry and the $7 Billion fishing and boating industry. He has shown every indication that he doesn’t give a flying flip about what we in the flyover zone who cling to our guns and religion think. We are too stupid to know what’s good for us and he about to show us what civilized people do.

It doesn’t make sense to normal people. In the broad AGW, and Green/Liberal/Progressive it is part of the continuing attempted power grab. If you actually look at the recommendation, it is a massive power grab, taking control of rivers, lakes, and coastal water away from states, and giving the lordship to appointed federal bureaucrats. But maybe Obama is just a naive cherub with bad advisors.

The only thing that the Chicago crowd use Lake Michigan for is to take the bodies to Gary,IN and dump them with cement overshoes. The word “manage” is the give away. It happened in New Jersey (bear hunting),California(Mountain Lion),Michigan (dove hunting)etc. Management is another word for non-scientific eviro-crazies platitudes about sustaining the resource. No environmentalist has ever saved a species or helped the habitat. It’s been the hunters and fishers that have paid for and protected the small and large game and through scientific methods, those game animals and fish have flourished.

katy on March 9, 2010 at 6:54 PM

This is sinister, just like the western states federal land grab. Redstate has a good post on the topic:

Guess what old Barack (I’ve never had a fishing rod in my hand a day in my life) Obama has been up to since last year? Plotting a Federal takeover of all our bodies of water (freshwater…saltwater…doesn’t matter), in an effort to set up MORE bureaucracies and circumvent the rights of the States to determine fair use and access rules amongst themselves based on the local interests of everyone involved.

If he was out to ban recreational fishing this piece would be easy enough to write; scream a little, stomp my feet, vow he’ll have to pry my fishing rod from my cold dead hands, etc…and be done with it. Problem is, this is much darker and more corrupt than that.

The White House plan would establish 9 regional planning bodies (bureaucracies) whose job would be to bring “Federal, State, and Tribal Partners together” to look for ways to “decrease user conflicts; improve planning and regulatory efficiencies and decrease their associated costs and delays; and preserve critical ecosystem function and services.”

Any hopes of drilling for oil in these places are dead.

It’s also another overreach of the federal government to control EVERY aspect of our lives.

conservative pilgrim on March 9, 2010 at 6:55 PM

Because, as we’ve been telling you, it’s not about popularity or reelection, it’s about destroying the economy to bring the country down. You talk about him giving a job loss talking point to Republicans? You say that as if you really believe he intends to create jobs (beyond the phony recovery we’ll see this year when they spend the other 2/3 of the stimulus and hire millions of TEMPORARY census workers).

I know you refuse to answer questions about this and just paint some of us as conspiracy theorists, instead of acknowledging the facts we present… So I’ll throw something else out this time. Obama promised during the campaign that his cap and trade system would cause energy prices to “necessarily skyrocket”. Knowing that, how naive are you that you find this fishing thing so hard to believe? I’m not even saying he’ll go along… Just trying to understand (all other examples of deliberately destructive actions aside) how you can look at things he has done, and say there’s no way he’d do this. Again, this goes back to your being in denial or intellectually dishonest as it pertains to the debate of whether his actions are deliberate or stupid/wrong

notagool on March 9, 2010 at 6:58 PM

I am an avid boater and saltwater fisherman. Purely recreational. Health issues have kept me off the water much of the last few years so I’ve been a bit out of touch on with the community.

Anyway, I got a call from some of my fellow boaters/fishermen the other day asking me if I heard that we are going to start needing saltwater fishing licenses because of some executive order Obama signed. I laughed it’s such an UnAmerican notion. I heard nothing about it. No way it could be true. Then I googled it and sure enough, starting in 2011 you’ll need a FEDERAL saltwater fishing license for recreational fishing.

Not to be outdone, Obama’s pal Deval Patrick in MA has taken the opportunity to follow suit. So, starting in 2011 you’ll need 2 different licenses if you want to fish off the coast of Massachusetts since it’s impossible to know what side of what invisible line you’ll be fishing at any given time. Take a popular fishery in MA Bay called Stellwagen Bank. It is considered a national marine sanctuary and good luck knowing what waters you’re in from minute-to-minute when out fishing so you’ll need 2 licenses.

The Coast Guard and MA Environmental police are going to spend all their time chasing boats and looking for fishing poles and checking licenses I guess.

This is part of the stuff that has the people of MA in the streets and electing people like Scott Brown.

I find it hard to believe that he’d try something THAT stupid….But, hey! It’s Obama, remember?.

GoldenEagle4444 on March 9, 2010 at 7:04 PM

Explain to me how this makes sense for him.

Well hell….he won! But I digress.

The problem here is that the Won is sooooo much more intellectual that the rest of us Heathen. It’s more of a religion, is it not.

“Have faith in me oh ye heathen. I shall lead you out of the land of milk and honey, and shall give you a prison of my own choosing. You shall praise only me, as I know that I am right. I am He.

The WON!

Think The One’s going to hand Republicans that talking point in this political climate? How excited do you suppose red-district Democrats will be to see the White House bring down the hammer on fly fishermen with an election eight months away?
Yeah, but he’s got such a tin ear, it’s impossible to rule it out completely. I mean, if this kamikaze jockey is still trying to push through his ObamaCare turd, who the hell knows what he’ll do?

Exactly! The man has to be mentally ill. Not to mention most of those brain dead liberals.

New public service ad. This is your brain. (Shows a human brain) This is your brain on drugs. (Shows a picture of Pelosi)

This F’in guy thinks that he is King!

thomasaur on March 9, 2010 at 6:47 PM

The punishment for hunting the King of England’s lands or cutting his trees was death.

There is a fishing show on the radio on the weekend. They have been riled up about this for over a month. Do not mess with the fish people. Listening to this show, I realize that people of all ages, of all races, all ethic groups, and all economic levels are into fishing. They can form the mother of all coalitions.

An angler on Lake Zurich landed a 22lb (10kg) perch after, as he subsequently bragged to a local paper, a ten-minute fight. Zurich citizens complained and the state prosecutor passed the case to Mr Goetschel, who had to determine how long an angler can struggle to land a fish before it becomes an act of cruelty. Fish-rights supporters opened a Facebook page for the dead perch — 6,000 “friends” made it probably Europe’s most popular fish — while the anglers argued fiercely that the fish felt no pain.

Related to that, one of the favorite “games” the Wisconsin DNR has played over the years to gain control over drainage ditches is to wait until near the end of a histroic rainstorm, drive over with an empty canoe, float said empty canoe in the ditch, and claim that, because the flooded ditch was able to float an empty canoe, it is a navigable waterway and thus can’t be altered without the DNR’s consent.

The list of things to undo by executive order by the next President grows longer daily…

katy on March 9, 2010 at 6:54 PM

or Sarah could just make a wide ranging executive order that basically says everthing that obama said, forget it

ConservativePartyNow on March 9, 2010 at 7:07 PM

Quick, we need some stories about homeless, minority, and laid-off fisherpeople.

GaltBlvnAtty on March 9, 2010 at 7:08 PM

Apparently Obama heard the old story about how if you give a man a fish you feed him for a day and he will depend on you tomorrow. Teach a man to fish and you have fed him for his entire life and he is self sufficient.

Obama needs dependency.

These morons deserve to starve to death. They are mentally ill. That’s what happens when Hollywood brainwashes generations that even inanimate objects have human emotions.

TheBigOldDog on March 9, 2010 at 7:10 PM

The governemt has been after commercial fishing for years. It is the most socialized industry in the United States.

lostinjrz on March 9, 2010 at 7:11 PM

I’ll tell you what, these radical environmentalists and animal rights groups are totally out of control. I work sometimes at a retirement community and I actually worried about the safety of one of the residents when she was leaving to go to church…in a white fox fur coat her husband had bought her 50 years ago. The poor woman is in her 90s and probably had no idea what these freaks would do to her seeing her in that coat. Luckily we live in a small community.

scalleywag on March 9, 2010 at 7:11 PM

Killing an animal is a powerful thing; you have to be right with yourself to do it.

I, of myself and personally, don’t step on ant mounds between the cracks of the sidewalk. This is the way I live my life, for myself and personally for my own way of living.

But I believe, just as truly, that hunting and fishing are fully legitimate sports, for those who indulge. I do not, but that’s me.

What Obow is trying here is the same as me telling every other sportsman what he/she CANNOT do, and that’s not what liberty is about.

Again, I have to ask: Is there no place where this overreaching clown won’t try stirring his greedy little fingers?

unclesmrgol on March 9, 2010 at 7:06 PM

I believe they have a referendum coming up there, to allow animals to have the same rights in court as humans. With the animal rights groups appointing the lawyers, of course.

Correction: they had a referendum this month, it got shot down.

bikermailman on March 9, 2010 at 7:12 PM

Explain to me how this makes sense for him.

It doesn’t, but when does Obama care about making sense, public approval, the constitution, etc. America is concerned about the economy but he still is driving his poll numbers into the grave with health care. Obama is a tyrant. He will do whatever he thinks he can get away with. And one of the key moves of any leftist revolution is to cause turmoil. Famine causes turmoil. FDR killed livestock and burned crops during the Great Depression. Obama could make a play for recreational and commercial fishing. Under the guise of green motives Obama is lining up a huge land grab, end of fishing, and most likely some assault on agriculture.
