Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on March 8, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

One might think that a President running a war (two wars, if one believes Barack Obama’s rhetoric) would take security rather seriously. Instead, when rapper Jay-Z and singer Beyonce Knowles toured the White House, the staff photographers made sure to capture this moment for posterity — and publicity for Obama. CNN, which has an afternoon show called The Situation Room, wonders what the White House was thinking:

Allahpundit says that any publicity shots involving celebrities in the Situation Room during the Bush administration will now almost certainly surface if they exist at all. (One shot of Bush putting his feet up on the Resolute desk in the Oval Office did surface after people criticized Obama for doing that during a staff meeting.) If they do, that doesn’t make Obama right, but both Presidents wrong. Somehow, I’d like to think that Obama’s predecessor took access to secure areas of the White House a little more seriously.

If Obama needs some celebrity shots to bolster his popularity, maybe he should just stick to White House dinners and Las Vegas fundraisers, and let the national-security team use the Situation Room for its intended purpose.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Historically, the Situation Room requires a high level of clearance due to the presence of sensitive information. “I believe the only exceptions had to be okay’d by either the chief of staff, national security adviser or the deputy chief of staff,” the Bush official wrote in an e-mail.

An e-mail to the White House asking if the pictures do in fact show Jay-Z in the Situation Room has not been returned.

The Bush official, who was present for a remodeling of the Situation Room in 2006, added, “We made very few exceptions to the rule, usually a visiting foreign dignitary attending a meeting there or someone without a clearance who needed to be briefed in that facility for some reason.”

Sensors were installed in the ceilings to detect cellular signals to prevent unauthorized communications and bugging by mobile phones, personal digital assistants, and other devices.[2] Before the renovation, the Secret Service confiscated phones but had no other means of preventing smuggled communication devices.[2] The new complex includes a lead-lined cabinet near the reception area for the deposit of personal communications upon entry.[3] Close by are glass-encased booths (which the Associated Press described as “retro-looking”) for secure and private telephone calls.[3]

Doesn’t that sound like the camera never should have been in the room? Especially if it was a phone with camera capabilities?

Who scrubbed the room/ these yahoos for security purposes before/afterwards?
Who allowed them in the room?
How much did they donate to Obama’s 2008/2012 campaign?
Who was babysitting them while they were in the room?
Where are the rest of the pics?

They all add up to be the death of a thousand self-inflicted paper cuts.

I really do wonder what happened to all the anti-war protesters every Friday down at the end of the block…the same wars are going on — the same people dying — but there are no protesters.

Every nuance of Bush’s behavior was subjected to scrutiny — and most of them were innocent. This wasn’t. Before these people were allowed to enter, all real work in the Room had to stop; any classified documents on tables or easels had to be covered up or secured, no classified conversations were permitted. At least that’s what would happen if proper security procedures were followed…

Of course we might all be making a big mistake. These people may merely be another version of Elvis Presley, selflessly offering their services in the defense of our country….

Did you see Streisands demeanor last night, when the woman director for The Hurt Locker praised the troops? If looks could kill, that woman would have dropped dead right on the stage. Some background on Shawn Corey Carter, AKA Jay-Z

Jay-Z Pleads Guilty To Stabbing, Faces Three Years’ Probation

Jay-Z pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to stabbing record producer Lance “Un” Rivera in December 1999 and is expected to be sentenced to probation.

He faces up to three years’ probation for the third-degree assault charge, according to a spokesperson for the Manhattan district attorney’s office.

The incident took place December 2, 1999, at the Kit Kat Club on West 43rd Street in Manhattan, at a listening party for Q-Tip’s solo album Amplified. Jay-Z, who had performed earlier that night at a separate party for his own then-new album, The Life and Times of S. Carter, had denied any wrongdoing from the start (see “Jay-Z Turns Himself In To Police For Questioning, Denies Involvement In Stabbing”).

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 6.

Defense attorney Murray Richman had no additional comment, and prosecutor Joan Illuzi-Orbon didn’t return calls by press time. Spokespeople at Island Def Jam and Roc-A-Fella, the label Jay-Z co-founded with Damon Dash, couldn’t comment by press time, and a spokesperson for Rivera’s label, Untertainment, did not return calls.

Before the plea, Jay-Z faced up to 15 years in jail on charges of felony assault in the second degree if found guilty at trial.

Rivera had drafted a civil suit against Jay-Z following his arrest but didn’t file it after they settled the matter out of court for between $500,000 to $1 million, according to the Associated Press.

The criminal case had been rescheduled numerous times since Jay-Z’s arrest on December 3, 1999 (see “Jay-Z Charged With Felony Assault, Lawyer Maintains Rapper’s Innocence”).

A day before the guilty plea, a separate gun-possession charge against Jay-Z was dropped, according to a Manhattan district attorney spokesperson. The rap star, bodyguard Hamza Hewitt and two other men were arrested April 13 when New York police found a loaded .40-caliber Glock in Hewitt’s waistband (see “Jay-Z Arrested On Gun Charge”).

Hewitt admitted sole ownership of the firearm, and Judge Charles Solomon dismissed the charges against the other three men. Hewitt will be sentenced for criminal possession of a weapon on December 4.

Welcome to the White House, Mr. Carter.
