New Palin “scandal”: She supports Canadian socialized medicine or something

posted at 5:31 pm on March 8, 2010 by Allahpundit

Let’s see how well this one follows the Palin “scandal” template. Step one: Some provocative yet murky detail emerges about something she said or did. In this case, that’d be her admission that as a kid her family once crossed the border to seek medical care for her brother in Canada. Step two: The media assumes the worst and beams out the shocking allegations. Can it be true? America’s conservative champion bypassing the 45-minute trip to Anchorage so that her brother could indulge in some freebie socialized medicine 15 hours away?

Step three: The truth. First, the full quote from her speech:

“My first five years of life we spent in Skagway, Alaska, right there by Whitehorse (180km away. see map). Believe it or not – this was in the ‘60s – we used to hustle on over the border for health care that we would receive in Whitehorse. I remember my brother, he burned his ankle in some little kid accident thing and my parents had to put him on a train and rush him over to Whitehorse and I think, isn’t that kind of ironic now. Zooming over the border, getting health care from Canada.”

And then the inconvenient part:

Little did these bloggers know that the source from which they were quoting either deliberately or unintentionally left off the fact that Palin clearly said that the story emanated from when her family lived in Skagway. Skagway is pretty close to Whitehorse [Canada]…

According to the summary of Canada’s health care system by Health Canada, it was only until 1972 that Yukon “create[d] medical insurance plans with federal cost sharing.”

So the day-long Yukon trek to feed from the socialist trough turns out to be a short drive to a nearby hospital where they paid for the treatment. Given her age at the time, why this would constitute a scandal even if her parents had gone there for free care is beyond me, but per our template, “too good to check” is the guiding principle in all things Sarahcuda.

But wait. An emerging scandal from the non-scandal?

Palin has also told an alternate version of the story that had her family traveling south by ferry to Juneau from Skagway for treatment of her brother’s burned foot, rather than to Canada, according to a 2007 report posted by the Skagway News.

Palin caught lying red-handed? Or Palin maybe having had her memory refreshed about her brother’s hospitalization in the course of talking to her parents while writing her book? We’re on the cusp of step two!

Exit question: Why on earth would she even talk about her family crossing the border to get treatment for her brother? Doesn’t she know that the left’s going to do this to her?

I applaud her reasons for stepping down. The lawsuits, one after the other were monopolizing so much of her time, and tax dollars, she felt it was better for the state, to step down.

Perhaps the msm will send busloads of reporters up to Canada to dig up the facts. I hope it takes them a long, long time

Maybe the LSM won’t send busloads, but in the PuffHo story, they reported that none of the Whitehorse area hospitals would issue a statement. I guess someone thought they’d get a scoop.

Are you serious? Palin points out what 40 years of socialized medicine has done to Canada, flipping the roles of people going to Canada for healthcare now fleeing Canada from its healthcare and you think she did something wrong?

The left just gave Palin another layer of teflon. thank you lefties. keep it up and by 2012 Palin could kill someone be found over their body with a smoking gun and no one would believe the MSM.

JetBoy on March 8, 2010 at 6:07 PM

She couldn’t take advantage of Canada’s free health care, because as an American citizen it wouldn’t be free for her.

That’s in addition to the fact that Canada’s health care system was just being put into effect at the time.

And the fact that she had nothing to say about where her parents went for health care.

As to her brothers injury. It is entirely possible that he was taken to Whitehorse for the original injury as it was closest, and later went to Junea for further checkups.

Some people are just pathetically desperate to find something… anything to attack this woman with.

Are you guys freaking kidding me? You’re actually going to blame HER because other people did something bad by not doing minimal research to find out what the actual deal was? What? I don’t understand you guys, I really don’t.

We all know what the deal is. It’s Sarah Palin. She could invent a cure for cancer tomorrow and the left would find some way to turn it against her. It’s typical political BS. And you know that AP. I’m just trying to figure out what your beef with Palin is, because it’s becoming annoying.

Funny thing about the left, Obama can tell a story about people losing their feet because of a doctor, or a story about how someone dies because of lack of insurance- and all those turn out to be complete fabrications. Yet Palin recounts a story in which her brother needed emergency care and had to be transported to the closest hospital, in Canada, and all of a sudden it’s a scandal. My God, it’s getting quite pathetic.

And keepthechange, how many times have we heard those ridiculous overused talking points? Get real.

ROFLMAO!!! Excellent response!

I find it funny. This happened in the 60′s. I believe Palin was born in 64. If so, that would have made her anywhere between 1, and 5 when this happened. So are people on the left, honestly going to hold her, a child at the time, responsible for a decision her parents made? My God, do they let their own toddlers make their medical decisions for them? No wonder they want so much dependency on government. They don’t have the brains God gave them, to take care of themselves.

Scientists tell us that the simplest explanation that covers all the bases is the correct one.

I’d postulate that Sarah Palin said they went to the hospital in Canada in the 60′s because they went to the hospital in Canada in the 60′s. Uh, because that’s what happened.

It’s called the truth. And, the fact that she doesn’t spend a lot of time worrying about how her statements will be received but, rather, just says it and moves on, is one of the most refreshing things about her.

I doubt if she’d care one way or the other what the “left” might do with what she says. It happened. She said it.

That’s “The Sarah Way” which I just coined so anybody who picks it up has to send me a nickel.

I thought that as well but the attacks are not on her policies. They are about her “place” and her as if she doesn’t know her “place.” these are the same arguments that woman had to answer for the last 40 years. If the GOp elites and people like Allah don’t like her policies that’s one thing (and i await the time when they come out against small gov, liberty and freedom). If they don’t like her persona(charisma, TV appearance etc) that is also in the realm of things we can discuss. But Allah’s exit question, CK snide remark among others, is not even addressing those two things. They are attack ingher and her right to be on the national stage.

Palin has been a gov of a state, she is a best selling author of a politcal book either by themselves gives her the resume to be on the national stage irt to politics and/or polices and fiscal decisions. She is a mother of 5, she is a mother of a special needs child and a mother of a deployed soldier. any of these gives her the resume to talk about social issues.

she has every right to be part of the national discussion on pretty much any political topic in the field.

however, the right continues to question her “qualifications” that is sexist. there is no other reason that a person with 10′s of millions of supporters would be treated in such a manner.

I think it is past time that the GOP leaders stand up and apoloize to her for their sexist behavior

If she could, she would sink the tea party movement, just to sell 10 more copies of her latest book.

keep the change on March 8, 2010 at 5:53 PM

Sure. The problem with conservatives like you is that you think the Left would go easy on Conservatives if only Sarah would shut up and go away. You want someone who has style points and doesn’t get dirty. Get a clue; this is a brawl. It’s a fight for our liberties. The difference between Palin and the rest of the GOP is that she is not afraid to fight them, and fight them she does, and fight them she has been doing far longer than most of the Beltway GOP.

The Conservative Movement needs, first and foremost, someone who can lead. That’s Palin. She’s got that leadership gene down pat. I don’t see it in anyone else right now.

Long ago Palin learned that the Other Side learned their politics at the feet of Saul Alinsky. She decided to read his book. And Use It! That’s the difference between Palin and everyone else out there.

for someone in her unique position, if she thought about how the left would spin her words before she said anything, she, or anyone in her position, would go crazy.

in addition to this, when you intellectually know you haven’t done anything inconsistent with your beliefs, it’s usually unnecessary to think about how others will react. because you know you can respond to any and all criticisms. the benefit of having a clear conscience.

Well she can’t be guarded about everything… remember everyone; Clinton, Bush, Rove, Cheney etc. charge speaking fees but Palin’s are the only one highlighted ridiculed … Healthcare is relevant now especially since it is ironic that Canada went socialist with healthcare and now two of their top politicians have very publically come here to get good and timely medical treatment…

This gets to the main pont, methinks. Palin knows she’s going to get hit, so she’s playing the rope-a-dope. They will keep attacking, of course, and she hopes the Libs punch themselves out before 2012. It will go on so long, no one will think about believing them.

Let’s rephrase that: the abusive husband says: why on earth did she not sit down and shut up. She knew I was going to hit her. She should have just kept her mouth shut. Are you 100% sure this is what you want to say Allah? because the two phrases have the same meaning you know.

While the Messiah is threatening to take over 1/6 of the entire American economy, the world is focused on where a pre-school infant got her medical care between 40-45 years ago.

Believe me she knows, and it only makes her even stronger. Making the left get all “wee’d up” (See Leno Show – her words), has become a favorite past time for her. The left has thrown everything at her, and failed miserably.

Compare that to the left’s favorite 2012 GOP contender, who despite kid-glove treatment by the press is currently being outsold by 3rd rate sci-fi books on Amazon.com.

Skagway has a community road to Canada. This is one of the few places in the U.S. and Canada that share their stores and hospitals. They even go back and forth with Canadian and American money.

Allah, How about a post about Romney’s Fox News Sunday Interview. He called the Mass. health care system “the perfect conservative plan”. Mitt got destroyed by Wallace over RomneyCare.

I was so terrified my parents would find out I just about threw up in the car on the way home. When we got home, I jumped out, ran around the side of the house took one lick and threw it away.

Never stole anything again.

I had to take my niece back to the store with something she stole. She was blubbering the whole way. Shame is a very powerful tool to keep kids on the straight and narrow.

Exit question: Why on earth would she even talk about her family crossing the border to get treatment for her brother? Doesn’t she know that the left’s going to do this to her?

Sarah knows that she is controversial because of who and what she is, when the real enemies of our American values were not controversial enough for the American electorate to recognize their danger.

But Americans are fair. As they see the lunacy of her critics, she gains credibility. Whether she uses it for her own benefit, or the benefit of others, I don’t care. As people put their trust in her that she is a “regular” person, hopefully they will distrust the members of both parties who talk down to Americans and Canadians because they think we need their insight to have a great country.

Palin rocks because she lives life. she wasn’t such a drug-head that she can’t remember her childhood. Compare to our current President,
Palin has great-grandparents whose lives she knows about.
She actually went to the doctor with her brother. What kind of house does he live in today? I bet she knows.
The whole world knows which college she went to and how she gained admission.
Her early career as a sportscaster is clearly documented; none of her former coworkers has to say “I have no idea what she actually did for 8 hours every day.”
She wasn’t late for the great majority of her committee meetings as an elected official.
She actually held meetings on the issues that she was responsible for.
Her husband still had to earn a paycheck after she was elected; he didn’t wait until he was given a cushy PR-job to make a speech about being proud to be an American for the first time in his partially-native American life.
She paid full price for her home.
Their developer did not go to jail with overwhelming evidence against him.

She is remembered for starring on her high school basketball team instead of riding the bench and whining about getting more playing time simply because the achievers had built a big lead.

She remembers going to Canada for medical care before their med was socialized. Obama remembers being a “3-point bomber” on the basketball team before the 3-point shot was introduced to high school ball. Whose memory is worse?

She has never told a crowd that her daughter shouldn’t have to be punished for making a mistake and getting pregnant.

These are just some of the ways in which Mrs. Palin has already passed the “Skeleton-in-the-closet” test. At this point, she should be free to live her life and dare the idiots–or the whimpy conservatives who couldn’t build a great country anyway–to criticize her.

The left has given Palin one of the greatest freedoms of all–freedom from fear. So just like Rush, she has earned the freedom to rub their face in it. But she is much more gracious than he is. I just hope she inspires a few more conservatives to grow a backbone.

When it comes to the Left and Sarah, it’s usually helpful to think of the Roadrunner metaphor, with Sarah as our hero, the Roadrunner.

For the left, every attack they use is the exploding box of ACME dynamite, every boulder on the catapult lands on their heads.

They will keep doing this to Palin. They can’t help themselves. It is in their nature.

If you actually watch the tape of the interview, you’ll discover that the only major difference between RomneyCare and ObamaCare that Mitt could point out is that one is state-run and the other would be national. He even admitted that the reason it isn’t running a bigger deficit is because of federal co-funding.

But, Mitt did manage to sell Chris Wallace a used car and a vacuum cleaner after the interview.

I think it’s rather stunning that the front-runner for the 2012 Republican nomination called RomneyCare the “perfect conservative plan.” It’s even more stunning that there hasn’t been any coverage of it. The establishment GOP is protecting him, and the liberal MSM is ignoring it because they want him to win the nomination. If he was a threat, every lamestream media outlet would be talking about this debacle of an interview 24/7.

takeamericabackin10 on March 8, 2010 at 7:54 PM

When Sarah Palin was 6 years old, her family went to Canada for health care–before health care was nationalized.

When Algore was sixteen, his grandfather filibustered against the Civil Rights Act of 1964–when segregration was a way of life in Tennessee.

bw222 on March 8, 2010 at 8:06 PM

Are you serious? Why mention her personal experience of going to Canada for family health care? When Canadian politicians are in the news fleeing socialist health care by coming to the U.S. for treatment today?

It’s called a negative object lesson- “folks, let’s learn from our neighbors’ mistakes.”

Who gives a damn about a half-remembered visit to Whitehorse?

The real Palin scandal is about to break.

AshleyTKing on March 8, 2010 at 8:12 PM

“Why on earth would she even talk about her family crossing the border to get treatment for her brother? Doesn’t she know that the left’s going to do this to her?”

Sure. She is setting them up, like writing “hi mom” on her hand.

Here’s the thing. At that time Canadians and Americans could freely cross each others borders. Whitehorse would have been the next largest hospital closest to them. They probably did other business in Whitehorse, too, as the population of Skagway is today about 800 people. I have no idea what it was in the 1960′s, likely a little higher.

crosspatch on March 8, 2010 at 8:15 PM

If you look up Skagway, it had about 900 residents in 2000. It probably was even smaller in the 1960s. In her book, Palin mentions that there were no sidewalks and gravel roads. I doubt there was a Mayo Clinic in town. When a child is injured, parents are looking for the closest medical facility.

Growing up in a border city in the 1970s (long before the WOT), people were going back and forth all the time and border security was non-existent. We were always going to Canada because (at the time) that’s where the best hockey rinks were.

bw222 on March 8, 2010 at 8:21 PM
