New Palin “scandal”: She supports Canadian socialized medicine or something

posted at 5:31 pm on March 8, 2010 by Allahpundit

Let’s see how well this one follows the Palin “scandal” template. Step one: Some provocative yet murky detail emerges about something she said or did. In this case, that’d be her admission that as a kid her family once crossed the border to seek medical care for her brother in Canada. Step two: The media assumes the worst and beams out the shocking allegations. Can it be true? America’s conservative champion bypassing the 45-minute trip to Anchorage so that her brother could indulge in some freebie socialized medicine 15 hours away?

Step three: The truth. First, the full quote from her speech:

“My first five years of life we spent in Skagway, Alaska, right there by Whitehorse (180km away. see map). Believe it or not – this was in the ‘60s – we used to hustle on over the border for health care that we would receive in Whitehorse. I remember my brother, he burned his ankle in some little kid accident thing and my parents had to put him on a train and rush him over to Whitehorse and I think, isn’t that kind of ironic now. Zooming over the border, getting health care from Canada.”

And then the inconvenient part:

Little did these bloggers know that the source from which they were quoting either deliberately or unintentionally left off the fact that Palin clearly said that the story emanated from when her family lived in Skagway. Skagway is pretty close to Whitehorse [Canada]…

According to the summary of Canada’s health care system by Health Canada, it was only until 1972 that Yukon “create[d] medical insurance plans with federal cost sharing.”

So the day-long Yukon trek to feed from the socialist trough turns out to be a short drive to a nearby hospital where they paid for the treatment. Given her age at the time, why this would constitute a scandal even if her parents had gone there for free care is beyond me, but per our template, “too good to check” is the guiding principle in all things Sarahcuda.

But wait. An emerging scandal from the non-scandal?

Palin has also told an alternate version of the story that had her family traveling south by ferry to Juneau from Skagway for treatment of her brother’s burned foot, rather than to Canada, according to a 2007 report posted by the Skagway News.

Palin caught lying red-handed? Or Palin maybe having had her memory refreshed about her brother’s hospitalization in the course of talking to her parents while writing her book? We’re on the cusp of step two!

Exit question: Why on earth would she even talk about her family crossing the border to get treatment for her brother? Doesn’t she know that the left’s going to do this to her?

One thing’s for sure, she always thinks ahead. That palm writing strategy has played out to her advantage, and it’s unfolding now on several levels.

I wonder if she wanted the left to hang her with something, so it would highlight how Obama just never knows about these unsavory blips from his past. Rezko, Ayers, Van Jones… all the Rev. Wright hate rants. Obama said the ‘activity’ of William Boom Boom Ayers happened when he was but a mere child, so why should he be judged by that. Then the Apologizer goes overseas, basically telling foreign leaders that some such event happened before he was born.

Obama and the truth. Separated at birth.

This isn’t as bad a scandal as the time she gave differing accounts of when she thought her daughter Malia had meningitis. The press really crucified her on that one

Funny thing about the left, Obama can tell a story about people losing their feet because of a doctor, or a story about how someone dies because of lack of insurance- and all those turn out to be complete fabrications.

Hell, he even lies about his own kid! He said Malia had meningitis when she was a baby, Michelle later refuted what he said, and then he repeats the lie AGAIN in SOTU speech! Yet no one bothers to call him on it. Palin, OTOH, gets raked over the coals. Unbelievable.

NoLeftTurn on March 8, 2010 at 9:58 PM

Isn’t it ironic? Zooming across the border with Canada for medical treatment, I mean. The sitting Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador has run into some criticism for zooming across the border to the US, for some medical treatment, but for some reason the media would rather let the dog lie sleeping.
No such organ as FNC up here north of the 49th, btw, but I’m glad I don’t really have to thank Al Gore for the internet.

Interesting tidbit about when that area actually introduced socialized medicine.

However, the question? Come on. She doesn’t mind if the liberals wee-wee all over themselves.

She’s way past that. She’s playing with them, now.

AnninCA on March 8, 2010 at 10:44 PM

The real gist of this story was that the press actually bugged the hospital for information.

How young are these reporters, anyway? Don’t they have a clue about medical privacy laws?

AnninCA on March 8, 2010 at 10:45 PM

Don’t they have a clue about medical privacy laws?

And hospitals don’t keep patient records forever. They wouldn’t have a clue about someone treated in the 60′s.

Yep, trying to summarize this “scandal” and this is what I gathered.

Basically, 40 some years ago, Palin at the age of 5, remembers her brother was treated at a Canadian hospital.
And as we know this was BEFORE Canadian FREE medical treatment.

Meaning her family had to pay for the treatment.

It is also true that Canadian FREE medical treatment doesn’t apply to Americans.

And somehow this makes Palin a hypocrite?
Really?

All this was some 40 years ago.
How bout something a little more current like the Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams traveled to the United States in February 2010, to undergo heart surgery.

The 59-year-old millionaire is set to spend over three months in America recovering from the operation.

Why is this Canadian politician running away from FREE Canadian medical treatment to get care in the USA?

Me think the situation TODAY is a little more important than the 40 year-old memory of a 5 year-old girl, don’t you?

The point is that Sarah grew up traveling to and from Canada naturally as part of life. And one of the big complaints is that she had no international experience. But her normal Alaskan life was so international she didn’t even consider it international. It is ironic.

Chuck Heath Responds To Canada Story

Palin’s father said his family probably boarded the train for the Whitehorse hospital only twice — once when a daughter had rheumatic fever, and once when his son, also named Chuck, severely burned his leg and an infection set in.

“We much preferred to use our facilities because my insurance didn’t cover anything in Whitehorse. And even though they have socialized medicine, I still had to pay the bill, being an American citizen,” Heath said.

Heath worked part-time for the White Pass & Yukon Railroad and had a pass allowing him and his family to ride for free.

The train in the 1960s often was the only option for getting to a doctor, Skagway Mayor Tom Cochran said.

There’s now a road to Whitehorse about 112 miles away, but people still take advantage of Whitehorse dentists or doctors rather than flying to Alaska’s capital, Juneau, 90 miles to the south.

“If you can’t fly to Juneau — and a lot of times you can’t, especially in the winter — they’re going to get you to a medical treatment facility if it’s an emergency, and that’s normally where Whitehorse comes into play,” Cochran said.

Cochran has lived in Skagway since 1968 and his family knew the Heaths. His own child needed help a decade ago.

“It was probably 10 years ago, anyway, two of my kids were in a four-wheeler accident, and one of them was hurt pretty badly, so we medevaced them to Whitehorse via ambulance,” he said. “It’s usually emergency situations when people go up there.”

Maybe Sarah and Todd had a rough year in business and did the common sense thing by using something that could help them out. Being a self employed businessman myself, getting insurance at all is no piece of cake. The left wants you to get union supplied insurance and the right wants you to work for big business to get it. Kind of leaves individual entrepreneurs out in the cold. What if the Canadian services were much closer than what her home hospital was? They do everything they can to hurt this woman and she’s still standing. They FEAR her, thus the garbage. To believe Sarah supports ANYTHING socialist is, well, you don’t have to have a PhD for that line of thinking. These strawman arguments and hypotheticals are insane. Shows you the commies have nothing and the “Hope and Change” are really “Hopeless and Change to Chicago Thug politics. Thank God the anti-Christ, sorry, President Teleprompter is only a one termer and both Houses of Congress go anti-Commie in November. I don’t think Sarah is the best Presidential candidate for 2012, but she would be way better than the Marxist in Chief who’s there now destroying the U.S. I agree she’s playing them all the way. She’s making coin now, which she deserves as an American Entrepreneur, and keeping them guessing the whole time. They waste much effort trying to tear down someone who will more than likely not even throw the hat in the ring this time, leaving a Dark Horse(shoot, I’m a Racist. I said “Dark”)to slide in with a landslide. Boy, Lefty Commies are really stupid being inflexible in their thinking with their ideology.

Sorry this was a bit long, just wanted to point out the stupidity the left is stuck with….

Thanks for posting that. I figured it was more a matter of logistics than anything to do with whether the care was better or free — which, of course, it wouldn’t be for Americans, even today. It works in reverse too. My friend was dating a Canadian guy for a while and he was able to get treated here and have it billed to his national healthcare. Stands to reason an American in Canada seeking medical attention would have to pay for it or submit the claim to insurance if the policy covers you while you’re out of the country.

Obiviously the effete liberals and RINOs trying to make hay out of this have never lived out in the hinterlands. If they did, they would know that the most convenient or accessible medical facility is not always the one most logical geographically.

NoLeftTurn on March 9, 2010 at 9:08 AM

It wasn’t Sarah and Todd taking their own kid to the doctor in Canada; it was Sarah’s parents taking her brother, and she was only 6 years old.

40 years ago, Alaska was even more rural than it now. This was long before the North Shore oil revenue started pouring in. How many hospitals were there in rural Alaska at that time anyway?

MarkTheGreat on March 9, 2010 at 9:25 AM

I was here in Canada in the summer. We were considered foreigners as we had been out of country for 6 years and did not have OHIP cards. We had to pay $350. before seeing a doc in emerg. Later, we paid $50. before we could see a doctor in an office.

The left are assuming that the Canadian receptionist in the 1960′s was such an idiot she completely forgot to ask for payment from Palin’s parents. Oh, yes, let’s not forget the fact that she was five and these were her parents acions.

The Toronto Star is also carrying this story, because the lame-o left here are also puppets in the service of liberals. Yes, we have to read leftist American talking points as well. The sad part is, we should expect Canadian reporters to know Canadian healthcare history, and not the garbled American version of it. The dumbing down of the electorate is on both sides of the border apparently, (although liberals here like to think that they are even smarter than the American elite.)

Either a 5-year-old girl doesn’t remember something clearly, or maybe her father took his injured son to the fastest medical treatment he could find, regardless of cost. Five-year-old girls don’t usually make medical, political and financial decisions concerning their older brothers, so why is this held against her NOW?

How many five-year-olds really remember everything clearly, and understand WHY their parents made decisions as adults? Didn’t Sarah Heath have a right to be childish as a child?

If we’re going down this road, then Barry Obama Soetoro is to blame for attending a Muslim school in Indonesia, and secretly wants to convert America to Islam.

Or maybe we can let kids be kids, and let their parents take responsibility for them.

RomneyCare isn’t big government either. It didn’t establish any new bureaucratic departments, and it didn’t compel obedience at every level either. And there is no state health care program that people must join.

Romney’s plan simply required you to get health care from any private insurer you want or pay your own way. Moreover, nobody gets a free handout on insurance. If you can’t afford healthcare, the state will chip in some money to help you pay. That’s it.

As for federal money, every state in the U.S. gets federal money. Mitt simply used the money the state was already getting and redirected it help people to pay their private insurance companies.

Interesting.

I guess you’re fine with keeping things they way they are in that taxpayers (who pay their insurance) are paying for the healthcare of everyone who doesn’t have insurance.

Essentially, the taxpayer is subsidizing, via the government, the freeriders and illegals who refuse to pay their own health care insurance.

What’s wrong with making everyone pay their own way?

Maybe they could get Andrew Sullivan on as their first guest.

I think BobAnthony may know the people who wrote this…

Govt men in black are breeding superaggressive black Bronx squirrels originally to control pidgeons and rodents but now to control poverty births. Muffled black AWACS helos drop them into homes and babies disappear to Nellis AFB, Groom Lake, NV. These squirrels have eight instead of the usual four (A,G,C,T) DNA base pairs, because the UFO-derived bases of hazinine, vudanine, quikunine and shugimine are included. UFOs also passed on their W and Z heterogametic chromosomes to snakes, birds and moths. Translucent blue-skinned, pointed-ear, subterranean reptile-human-hybrid aliens (aka subters), whose white-hair-covered elders are mistaken for sashquatch, also have these eight base pairs, and it was by experimenting with them that the squirrels were developed. These subterraneans were bred by the reptoids from fallen blues, from which commonly known as angels or fairies. The fallen blues were sent to help humans ascend to a higher plane but instead conspired with the reptoids and became what we commonly think of as demons and witches. These subterraneans have a complex underground world of tunnels which connect them to major secret underground archives of many powerful organisations. Their central offices are in fact hidden unerneath Vatican Hill and connect to the Vatican archives, where cloaked aliens are mistaken for apparitions of dead popes. The pyramids of Egypt have long been laboratories where they experiment on humans. The aliens thusly manipulate Vatican, White House and Kremlin archives to control world events. Their peculiar-shaped single eye, surrounded with pyramid-like horn-bone structure has served as the symbol for the masonic and illuminatist movements, whose highest-ranking members attend the councils of the subterranean masters. The horn-bone is also the basis of the unicorn myth. They had also fooled the Jewish people into thinking they were a tribe, and so actually form the mythical “lost tribe” of Israel, as well as the supposed lost continent of Atlantis. Petroleum is actually synthetically produced from their sewage and they pipe it into reserviors we mistakenly call oilfields, and by manipulating the appearance of oil, they further control world events by sending oil mostly to Islamic countries succeptible to subterranean-inspired superstitions – The famous meteor of Muhammad was actually fired by the reptoids to help the subterraneans do so. Common UFO drones are greys which were bred to serve the reptoids, and some have been bred for earth and disguised as some, but not all, monkeys. The monkeys which spread AIDS to humanity were actually greys, as were the Ashanti who sold African slaves to the West. The fallen blues fought a nuclear war with the reptoids on earth which led to the extinction of reptoid-derived dinosaurs, allowing humanoids to first settle the earth. The time-travelling Pleiadians are the source of Judeao-Christian deity, and the Haryapans (commonly called “Aryans” and after whom Harappa was named) are the source of Hindu-Graeco-Nordic deity. Humanoids from Sirius are the combined source of the Mongolian, Shinto and AmerIndian deities, and those from Vega are the source of African animist deities.
