Massa: Dems railroaded me because I opposed ObamaCare bill; Update: Massa audio added
posted at 10:55 am on March 8, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
When allegations of sexual harrassment involving Rep. Eric Massa (D-NY) arose last week, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer claimed that he warned Massa’s office to forward them to the House Ethics Committee or he would do it himself, and that they duly complied. In an interview yesterday, Massa — who will resign from office today — claimed that Hoyer lied, and that he first heard of the allegations after Hoyer went public with them. Massa accused Democratic Party leadership and the White House of railroading him in order to get him out of the way of ObamaCare:
Roll Call reports this morning that on the local radio show he hosts in his district, Massa said he had not been informed of the sexual harassment allegations before they became public. He claimed that Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., spoke falsely when he said he had brought the matter to him previously, Massa said. “Steny Hoyer has never said a single word to me, at all, ever, not once,” Massa said. “Not a word. This is a lie. It’s a blatant, false statement.”
He also railed against Hoyer for discussing Ethics Committee business with the press. “Never before in the history of the House of Representatives has a sitting leader of the Democratic Party discussed allegations of House investigations publicly before findings of fact. Ever.”
Massa, who voted against health care reform in November, accused Democratic leaders of driving him out of office in the cause of passing health care reform. “With the departure of Congressman Neil Abercrombie (D), who is running for the governorship of Hawaii, and with the tragic and very sad passing of my personal friend Jack Murtha (D-Pa.), mine is now the deciding vote on the health care bill and this administration and this House leadership have said, quote-unquote, they will stop at nothing to pass this health care bill. And now they’ve gotten rid of me and it will pass. You connect the dots.”
The comment that landed Massa in hot water, he claimed, was a sexual proposition he made in jest at a table full of drunken male staffers at a wedding reception on New Year’s Eve. He also said that the complainant was not the man he allegedly harassed, but an offended third party who witnessed the incident.
If that’s true, then Massa has a perfect remedy at hand: don’t resign. After all, he’s under no particular requirement to do so, except for his own conscience. His resignation isn’t a necessity based on his decision to retire at the end of his term. Under the circumstances, his resignation looks more like an admission of wrongdoing (beyond that of making a crude joke at a cocktail party), and if that’s not the case, then he should rescind it.
Why did Hoyer and Pelosi make such a public spectacle of the ethics investigation? That may have a slightly less paranoid explanation. Charlie Rangel had just embarrassed the House leadership, and with a series of scandals threatening to turn 2010 into a rerun of 2006 from the opposite direction, both Hoyer and Pelosi certainly had enough motive to grandstand to the press. That may not have been motivated over Massa’s vote on ObamaCare, but just as a way to look proactive rather than reactive to the latest ethics eruption in the press.
Massa is ill with cancer and says he needs to leave Congress to focus on his therapy. That’s certainly understandable. But Massa can’t claim that Hoyer and Pelosi railroaded him out of office if he resigns on his own for health reasons. If he wants to be the “deciding vote” on ObamaCare, all he has to do is stick around. If he doesn’t, that’s entirely his decision, but it sounds like a smoke screen rather than an exposé. (via JWF and CentristNet)

Rahm does seem to be in the crosshairs, and his tenure at the WH is uncertain. BUT the WH’s short-term interest is passing Obamacare, and Massa’s allegations are not helping in that direction. So there is probably collusion going on, but I doubt it’s between the WH and Massa.

What I am still trying to wrap my head around is the community shower thing. I just do not want to think our Senators and Congressmen are all showering together. My gym has separate shower stalls with curtains yet the congressional shower area does not??????

I seriously doubt that Obama and Massa are in cahoots to exact revenge on Rahm Emanuel. This scandal hurts Obama as much as it hurts Rahm because it highlights (once again) the thuggish ways of his administration.
Obama cares about one thing: Getting his horrible bill passed, and he will do it by any means necessary, including getting Massa out of office.

Someone at NRO just posted an observation that Gov. Paterson and Rep. Massa are examples of what the WH will do to smear and destroy someone who gets in its way.
The WH has had this stuff on file, and just pulled it out when needed.

Shouldn\’t this be a “pink-on-blue” story?
It could very well be he’s sour graping because the democrats were too happy to throw his gay ass under their bus, and the thought of circling the wagons to mindlessly defend him, like they constantly do with Rangel (a black man), never even crossed their minds. They didn’t even tacitly defend him by pretending they knew nothing of the accusation, so they could do their usual nothing about it, and let the dumber segments of the population forget all about it.
As for taking back his writ of resignation, remember the last guy that did that (who, coincidentally, was under a similar pink cloud with a rainbow through it)?
The GOP ran him out on a rail, and rightfully so. He’s lucky he wasn’t tarred, feathered, then pitchcapped.
However, if this guy wants to go that route and face a similar fate, I’m all for it. We don’t ger to see enough democratic liberal socialist party cannibalism. This’ll be one for the Discovery Channel (and not just because Massa wanted to grab a male intern and do it like a mammal).

He should retract his resignation, vote against the bill, switch to the republican side, then resign and have a republican appointed.
Then he’s on the same level playing field as the scumbags Emmanuel and Obama.

I’m all about another no vote on Obamacare but don’t mistake that for endorsing Massa.
The reason he is against the current Obamacare plan is:
In other words he didn’t think it went far enough.
Massa is also a “Move ON” fellow traveler and a vociferious critic of both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Washington, DC – A coalition of health care reform advocates rallied outside the Ritz-Carlton hotel today to protest the health insurance lobbyist conference taking place inside. Congressman Eric Massa (D-NY29) joined Health Care for America Now (HCAN) and its coalition partners from the AFL-CIO, the American Medical Students Association (AMSA), and MoveOn.org along with The Vineeta Foundation, DC for Obama, DC Fights Back, and the Leadership Conference for Guaranteed Health Care and its coalition partners from California Nurses Assoc., Physicians for a National Health Program, Healthcare-NOW and Progressive Democrats of America to demand lobbyists stop the rhetoric and start supporting true quality health care for all.
“This is America’s time – at long last the US Congress will soon enact legislation giving every American the right to quality health care,” said Congressman Massa. “People will no longer suffer and die because they cannot buy necessary health care. This will be done, it must be done, and done now!”

Just when I think I can’t be surprised any more by the tone the liberal mainstream media is taking on this event, MSNBC has a full page on their site presenting his words in context and worth investigation. The same network that employs Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow.
On the other hand, CNN is – I would say they were carrying the Obama administration’s water but that implies enough intelligence to co-operate – going with a FIVE LINE blurb that makes this out to be a housecleaning done by the Most Ethical Congress Evah™.

As far as shower stalls and curtains–the U.S. Army had none when I was a G.I. in 1964–1966. The 5 or so gays had their group shower time alone, and the other 295 straight guys had their longer group time shower use–without the 5 gays.

Riddle me this…why Reagan’s fixes harmed people? I was cornered yesterday b/c a relative lost his job. My gosh they badmouth and hate Reagan.
I was a teenager in an island, unknown to his policies/politics. I mean it turned me into a depressive soul! It’s right when Dems or libs change faces and turn into such hatred is amazing…it does hurt when relatives you care about do this to you.
But when “history seems to repeat itself” by people losing jobs by the thousands-like their situation-they are incredibly misinformed or just don’t care. So for the sake of the family relationship I cannot discuss politics, or like “Survivor” I will be “out of the

Via Jay Cost, Pennsylvania Democrat Kathy Dahlkemper will switch her vote from “yes” to “no” on health care because of the Senate bill’s provisions to spend taxpayer money on abortions:
While Mrs. Dahlkemper campaigned as a supporter of health care reform and made an impassioned plea on the House floor in July, citing access as the problem that demanded action from Washington, she’s made it clear since the House acted in November that the key issue for her is abortion.
Her office confirmed that recently when her spokeswoman said that Mrs. Dahlkemper could not support the Senate’s language “period.”
