Dem congressman: We may have as little as 201 votes for ObamaCare

posted at 7:35 pm on March 8, 2010 by Allahpundit

Big news, especially now that it looks like Reid has 50 for reconciliation. I’m not sure where he’s getting this number, actually. It may be that he’s simply basing it on Stupak’s claim about having 15 Democrats ready to vote no over abortion, but whatever the actual total, Cleaver sounds pretty sure that they’re short of 216 at this point.

Today’s head count? Ed already mentioned Dan Lipinski’s no vote. Kathy Dahlkemper, who was rumored to be part of Stupak’s coalition of no, now confirms that she is. Suzanne Kosmas, a Florida Dem, hasn’t committed yet either way but Geraghty makes the case that she’ll have no choice but to stick with no. Another fencesitter, John Adler of New Jersey, told ABC yesterday that he’ll have to vote no again too unless the House and Senate can work something out on cost containment. (A down note: In the same segment, Jason Altmire made it sound like he might tilt to yes.) Artur Davis was always planning to vote no given his run for governor in Alabama, but he confirmed today that he’ll take a break from campaigning to come back to D.C. and cast his nay. And then there’s this:

President Obama made an in-person push for health care reform in the Philadelphia suburb of Glenside today, but Hotline OnCall’s Reid Wilson notes that some vulnerable Democrats from Pennsylvania were not in attendance for his speech.

Democratic Reps. Patrick Murphy, Chris Carney, and Tim Holden did not attend the event. Meanwhile, Senate primary combatants Arlen Specter and Rep. Joe Sestak were there.

If red-district Dems are too afraid to have their picture taken with him, I don’t know where they’ll find the balls to vote for his bill. Anyway, here’s Cleaver; click the image to listen. Exit question: Did Scott Brown inadvertently make it easier to pass ObamaCare? I’m going to say no, but different media outlets deal with their grief over Massachusetts in different ways.

Update: Another admission. We don’t have the votes yet, says Anthony Weiner.

Exit question: Did Scott Brown inadvertently make it easier to pass ObamaCare? I’m going to say no, but different media outlets deal with their grief over Massachusetts in different ways.

I’m going to say no. Because House Dems don’t trust Senate Dems. And the abortion issue is real. House Dems don’t trust the Senate Dems to rework the abortion language — which may or may not be a reconcilable issue anyway (budget issue or policy issue). Indeed, Scott Brown probably made a lot of House, blue dog Dems more afraid to vote for ObamaCare as they now understand how unpopular it is.

My Gawd. I drank pretty good after Scott Brown and I’ll drink even more when this monstrosity is finally put down.

solidaction on March 8, 2010 at 7:43 PM

Reid’s 50 may be mostly “open to the process” of reconciliation, but have not signed on to any specific reconciliation legislation, in part because no such legislation has been written yet.

And since the Senate probably knows Obama would sign he Senate bill and walk away saying, “Thanks, suckers” to the House as he pivots to jobs and shamnesty, coming out for reconciliation is safe because you know you’ll probably never actually have to vote on it.

Wethal on March 8, 2010 at 7:43 PM

No way this crap sandwich passes. Now the work begins. Republicans take back Congress and work on the fixing the budget which is a train wreck. It’s immoral what we are leaving to our grandkids.

You will know it when they have it, since December 25 all they had to do is vote.

I wonder how the double cross is going to work out for them. You know that once they vote on the Senate bill it’s ballgame over. Rush was all over this today, and I have been there since December.

We’re kind of a little bit burdened by the idea that there is not an actual document,” he said. “So it’s kind of hard to rally the votes without a specific bill.”

Critical bit from Weiner. No one knows what reconcilation would actually say, so no one wants to commit to a vapor bill of vague goals.

If they somehow avoid passing this POS we may end up with a more or less equally devided house, but even then I think that the Republicans will narrowly control the house. Just MHO

President Obama made an in-person push for health care reform in the Philadelphia suburb of Glenside today, but Hotline OnCall’s Reid Wilson notes that some vulnerable Democrats from Pennsylvania were not in attendance for his speech.

Glenside is in Murphy’s district. Murphy had a scheduing conflict; he was giving a community some federal grant money. Sort of thing that could easily have been re-scheduled if Murphy really wanted to be seen with Obama at an Obamacare rally. Murphy won by about 800 votes in 2006. Not sure what the margin was in 2008, but it wasn’t much better.

joedoe on March 8, 2010 at 7:57 PM

There are two paths which are both certain to result in Obamacare being passed into law, and thus the beginning of the end of the Republic:
1)”Oh well, they have the votes, let’s focus on trying to reverse the abortion after the placenta leaves the womb.”
2)”It’s dead, it will never pass the house.”

No,no, and no!

Continue to drive a stake through it’s heart, stuff garlic in it’s mouth, bury it upside down (but not in it’s native earth)and burn a cross on it’s chest.
Do not consider this dead until Obama is no longer President. The man is worse than a rabid dog w/r healthcare. If he could put troops in the streets to ram it though (Rahm it through??? Sorry, Blonde moment), I truly believe he would.

Reconciliation – Smoke and Mirrors

If the House Democrats who originally voted “no” on Health Care Reform, are sold by the President on changing their vote to “yes,” with the understanding that the bill will be sent to the Senate to “fix” it, they are being sold a multi-trillion dolllar bill of goods!

Why would the President, whose centerpiece of his presidency is health care reform, pursue a “fix” in the Senate under Reconciliation, when all he needs to do to have government controlled health care is to simply sign the bill passed by the House, given that the bill would have already passed both houses of Congress? In fact, Senator Kent Conrad, wrote on Saturday in the Washington Post, “Reconciliation is not being considered for passing comprehensive health-care reform. Major health-care reform legislation passed the Senate without reconciliation on Christmas Eve. If the House now passes that legislation, it can go immediately to President Obama’s desk to be signed into law. The Wall Street Journal corroborates this view today, stating:

“After all, the White House would much prefer the Senate bill, because by its lights the cost-control programs are tougher than what the House prefers. And from a political perspective, a bill that can be signed immediately and that the press will portray as an historic achievement is far better than the drawn-out and gory battle that would be reconciliation. Republican Senators will have many procedural knives at their disposal, and the process will force Democrats to cast further votes and spend more months debating a deeply unpopular bill.

In other words, perhaps Mr. Obama has embraced this reconciliation two-step only to renege as soon as the House gives him what he wants. While some House Democrats would be furious, they’d soon be defending the Senate bill by necessity against the GOP. The moderates who vote for it might be collateral damage, but the White House has already concluded that this is the price of building its cradle-to-grave entitlement citadel.”

Remember the content of the Senate version of health care reform. It encompasses the following:
1. $400 billion in Medicare cuts

2. Establishes a government board to decide heath care benefits included and covered by all insurance policies

3. Creates a health care exchange controlled by the government

4. Requires the States to expand Medicaid to cover uninsured citizens at State expense, which means increased taxes.

5. Excludes Nebraska, and Louisiana from paying for Medicaid expansion in their states. Florida and Conneticutt also received favorable deals in the Senate bill.

6. Increases the deficit by $300-500 billion.

7. Raises taxes on medicine, services, and medical supplies.

8. Exempts members of Congress from having to participate in this program.

9. Will increase premium prices on existing policies, given that the individual mandate will not be enforced, which would otherwise legally compel young people to buy policies and offsett the cost of premiums overall.

10. Will allow government-subsidized abortions for the first time in 33 years.

Some may doubt, that the President would “double-cross” House Democrats about sending the bill back to the Senate to gain their support for passage of the Senate bill. However, Speaker Pelosi, of course, could simply send the Bill, passed by both the House and Senate, to the President – and the President need not sign it, as any bill sent to the President which he does not sign or veto, becomes law after 10 days.

This is ‘Chicago-style” politics! And President Obama has said repeatedly, that if he can be an effective one-term president, that is acceptable as opposed to being a two-term president. He will do this; and so will Speaker Pelosi. They will sacrifice everything, including a few of their own House members, to take control of health care in America.

NOW is the time folks. We are at the moment of truth for America’s future. Why isn’t some prominent Republican politician, or conservative media figure, calling for a march on Washington to save this country from socialized medicine, and a financial catastrophe?

He can’t refuse to talk to them, but he still has to know this deal will never become law, as once the House passes the Senate bill, it’s over. Harry, Nancy and Obama will find excuses why there is more important work to be done, and they’ll get to it in due course.

Ace headline says that Stupak thinks they can work this out…

d1carter on March 8, 2010 at 8:53 PM

AoSHQ is reporting that the Dems have apparently come close to meeting Bart Stupak’s price for the Big Cave-in.

This steaming dungheap is nowhere near dead, despite months of Ed and AP trying to insist it is.

It will be dead when Reid, Pelosi and Osama Obama are perp-walked out of D.C. Unless/until that happens, it seems more and more likely that we will get what the President-for-Life wants: more socialism, more totalitarian government control of our lives and a total financial meltdown.

Enjoy your popcorn and pudding. You won’t be able to afford it when the Traitor-in-Chief is done with us.

I think I hear a large lady warming up her voice…

d1carter on March 8, 2010 at 8:59 PM

Stupak supposedly cannot be changed in reconciliation, as it is a policy matter, not a budget matter. So they have some kind of amending legislation?

The Senate would have to pass this and need 60 votes. Do they think they’ll get some RINO votes? They can agree in principle on language, but how do they change the Senate bill the House must first at least vote on?

Wethal on March 8, 2010 at 9:01 PM

Rep. Bart Stupak said he expects to resume talks with House leaders this week in a quest for wording that would impose no new limits on abortion rights but also would not allow use of federal money for the procedure.

“I’m more optimistic than I was a week ago,” Stupak said in an interview between meetings with constituents in his northern Michigan district. He was hosting a town hall meeting Monday night at a local high school.

“The president says he doesn’t want to expand or restrict current law (on abortion). Neither do I,” Stupak said. “That’s never been our position. So is there some language that we can agree on that hits both points – we don’t restrict, we don’t expand abortion rights? I think we can get there.”

This is what Stupak actually said.

Easy, if you think of it in the Obama Way: tell Stupak if he’ll just go along (and here’s a little something for the folks back in the district, BTW) we’ll be sure to address your concerns once the bill is passed!

All Osama Obama has done for his entire adult life is lie and connive to get his way. Why should we expect anything different now?

MrScribbler on March 8, 2010 at 9:04 PM

What is the majority now that Massa is gone? Still 216 or down to 215?

txmomof6 on March 8, 2010 at 9:05 PM

So Stupak is presumably talking about modified abortion language in a reconciliation bill, right? Because the House has to vote on the Senate bill as is before and modifications in recoonciliation can be discussed.

That’s a pretty big leap of faith since Zero can just tell them all to pound sand once they pass the House bill.

216.

They all know that. They may think the voters don’t know that. They would blame any failure of reconciliation on the GOP in the Senate.

Wethal on March 8, 2010 at 9:03 PM

Problem for Stupak is that the only option for the House is to vote on the Senate bill first with no change in the language at all. Then hope the Senate will change the language later. Not gonna happen, there are not enough votes in the Senate. Don’t fall for it Stupak.

The thermometer is going lower, more than it went higher before.
Time there was warmth and plenty, but that cup soon runneth no more.
Though we could not caution all, we still might warn a few:
Dont lend your hand to raise no flag atop no Ship of Obama Fools.

Ship of Obama Fools on a cold cruel sea
Ship of Obama Fools sail away from we.
It was later than we thought, when we still might have believed as you,
Now we can no longer share your delusions, Ship of Obama Fools.

The Stupak news is confusing. He can ageee on whatever language pleases him, but neither the House nor the Senate bill can be changed at this point. If they are agreeing on new language in a reconciliation bill, then prepare to be screwed, House. Have fun.

joejm65 on March 8, 2010 at 9:17 PM

They still don’t have the votes, otherwise this bill would be on the floor of the House right now for a vote.

GarandFan on March 8, 2010 at 9:23 PM

But they are not going to stop trying to push this junk through.

Blake on March 8, 2010 at 9:59 PM

This will be a hellacious couple of years. The great news is…we aren’t going any where either. So back the eff up Dems and get out of our way. Grab your sporks and let’s roll!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Cracked myself up! “They” will eat their young to get this bastardization of HC through. I truly hope they fail, the maneuvering alone is enough to do anyone in. What we all know is that they will not give up and there is always something else on the horizon. On guard everyone and keep your noses in the air!
