Open thread: Oscars
posted at 7:05 pm on March 7, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
I gave up watching the Oscars a few years back, not because of its politics but because of its excruciating boredom. Football and baseball games keep running over their allotted television time too, the result of packing more and more ad time into game breaks (and crotch-scratching time in baseball by pitchers and catchers), but at least they have a point other than self-congratulation. One might think that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences might try whittling down the number of awards given out at the big bash — they do have another ceremony for most of their technical awards — but instead, they’ve doubled down by expanding the number of nominees in the Best Picture category from five to ten films.
How’s that for listening to your audience? It’s akin to solving the problem of a large, bloated federal government by spending more money and expanding Leviathan exponentially. Which, actually, most of Hollywood thinks is a super-great idea, too.
Unlike some years, I’ve seen quite a few of the nominees, although not all of them. A couple of the nominees are a surprise; District 9? Avatar made a ton of money and wasn’t a bad film, but the Academy already gave a bunch of Oscars out when it was done the first time as Dances with Wolves. The Blind Side is a great, feel-good movie with a surprising jolt of self-reflection, but its true story will be too politically incorrect for a win; it’s lucky to be nominated. Inglorious Basterds was a strange feast of vengeance porn and a weird choice for this list, although it had some excellent performances. Up may be the most emotionally resonant animated film I’ve ever seen, and it has some homages to Spencer Tracy and Kirk Douglas — but it’s still animated, which is a kiss of death.
If I had to pick one from the films I’ve seen, it should be either Up, The Hurt Locker, or Up in the Air. Hurt Locker had some momentum until a few recent comments about how it didn’t reflect precise reality, which is usually SOP for Hollywood. Up in the Air starred George Clooney and was a brilliant but depressing look at social isolation and how it impacts even those who claim to cherish it. It didn’t wimp out and fall for a happy ending, either, which greatly disappointed the friends with whom I saw it, but instead it opted for honesty. I’m rooting for The Hurt Locker (especially since The Stoning of Soraya M didn’t get noticed by Oscar this year), but if Up or Up in the Air win, I’ll be happy. If Avatar wins, I’ll post the South Park takedown of it tomorrow.
Which film do you want to see win? Take the poll. And by the way, The Stoning of Soraya M gets released on Blu-Ray on Tuesday. Mine is already on its way.
Update: Should have been Dances with Wolves, not Dancing. Sorry about that.
Update (AP): Bumping this up top as tonight’s ceremony approaches…

Apparently they value that culture so much that they would rather see black children grow up in abject poverty or as wards of the state than be adopted by whites who want to care for them. That’s sick!

Hurt Locker would have never won a thing if President Bush was still in office.

Also, good to hear The Hurt Locker beat out the Space Smurf movie for best film and director.
Yakko77 on March 8, 2010 at 1:55 AM
“Hurt Locker” screenwriter Mark Boal, who won the Oscar for original screenplay, thanked Bigelow, calling her an “extraordinary and visionary filmmaker,” and dedicated his Oscar win to the troops still in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with those who did not make it home. Boal also affectionately recalled his father, who died a month ago.
Bigelow also added a prayer for the troops.
“I’d just like to dedicate this to the women and men in the military who risk their lives on a daily basis in Iraq and Afghanistan and around the world,” Bigelow said. “And may they come home safe.”
Good to see the people who made The Hurt Locker genuinely care.
Eat S#!t Michael Moore.
Yakko77 on March 8, 2010 at 2:03 AM
I and many other black people I know have no problem with black children being adopted by whomever, as long as they’re good people. I remember years ago, a group of black social workers coming out against whites adopting black kids, but I have no idea if that is still their position. As usual, it seems that it’s more so the liberal/pseudo intellectual/elites that generally take that stance. At least from what I’ve seen.

What is Beck talking about in this tweet?
I could’ve sworn there were posts here or at Big Hollywood saying the same thing as Beck but then I see all the praise Hurt is getting in this post.

From what I gather Hurt beat out Avatar.
MeatHeadinCA on March 8, 2010 at 2:24 AM
OK, so the other day when I’m doing my dishes, I heard Jerry Rivers interviewing some guy that seemed to be complaining that Hurt Locker’s producer’s owed money to vets… It was Jerry, so I wasn’t really paying attention. Anyone know anything about this?
MeatHeadinCA on March 8, 2010 at 2:25 AM
Yup…..Hurt locker got the prize…
dec5 on March 8, 2010 at 2:32 AM
Wow, I haven’t seen any of those except District 9. I watched the first hour of Inglorious Basterds but couldn’t finish it, I thought it was horrible yet it had one of the most powerful opening scenes I had ever seen.
I just couldn’t bring myself to see Avatar, I knew the preaching would be too much for me and the movie didn’t appeal to me anyway other than the 3D special effects. I’ll just see Clash of the Titans and the new tron for my 3D fix.
I thought District 9 was exceptional and if Avatar can be nominated, why not D9?
Looks like I should check out The Blind Side and Up in the Air. Sandra Bullock usually makes sappy romantic comedies so I figured this movie was another one of those and George Clooney movies just aren’t that good to me. I didn’t like any of the Oceans movies, the only movie of his I like is From Dusk till Dawn, that rocked.
I’ll have to check out the Stoning of Sraya this tuesday, I’ve been waiting for that one. That’s probably the true best picture of the year from everything I have read about it.

They also were pissed that a war movie won anything and called the USA the United Sh!T of America.

that their propaganda viewpoint has hit the tipping
point, and Americans are fed up with it!
Its time for Hollywood to define who the hero and the villian is,and take a stand and pick a side!(sarc).

I knew when all of the negative stories about Hurt Locker hit last week that they had won and the Lib MSN couldn’t let it go without adding something negative to tarnish the narrative and to diminish the boost in viewers that an Oscar win will earn a movie. In other words I knew that the winners had been leaked before the awards!
/no sarcasm this is a true conspiracy and should be looked into.
Gwillie on March 8, 2010 at 7:54 AM
I didn’t watch a second of the awards. I was sure it would be one long Avatar love fest. I am so glad The Hurt Locker won.

Yeah, I did get a little motion sick from Pelosi’s ups and downs.
The President should have gotten an Oscar last night for this 4 minute lie. I’m surprised the Academy didn’t have a little Oscar for the One and his face flashed on the big screen.
yoda on March 8, 2010 at 8:23 AM
Best part of the ceremony was the ‘Score’ category. The music accompanied by a beautiful exhibition of dancing and human movement. The acceptance speech for that category delivered by Michael Giacchino I argue was the most memorable. Succinct I might add – “if you want to be creative, get out and there and do it: it’s not a waste of time”
PunditFight on March 8, 2010 at 8:35 AM
I wouldn’t be so quick to attribute THL’s Oscar night success to there being a conservative or rightward movement in Hollywood. The Oscars are as much egalitarian as they are merit based.
THL was a great movie though. Sad to see that District 9 came away empty. First movie I have seen in the theater 2x in a long, long time.
