Open thread: Oscars
posted at 7:05 pm on March 7, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
I gave up watching the Oscars a few years back, not because of its politics but because of its excruciating boredom. Football and baseball games keep running over their allotted television time too, the result of packing more and more ad time into game breaks (and crotch-scratching time in baseball by pitchers and catchers), but at least they have a point other than self-congratulation. One might think that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences might try whittling down the number of awards given out at the big bash — they do have another ceremony for most of their technical awards — but instead, they’ve doubled down by expanding the number of nominees in the Best Picture category from five to ten films.
How’s that for listening to your audience? It’s akin to solving the problem of a large, bloated federal government by spending more money and expanding Leviathan exponentially. Which, actually, most of Hollywood thinks is a super-great idea, too.
Unlike some years, I’ve seen quite a few of the nominees, although not all of them. A couple of the nominees are a surprise; District 9? Avatar made a ton of money and wasn’t a bad film, but the Academy already gave a bunch of Oscars out when it was done the first time as Dances with Wolves. The Blind Side is a great, feel-good movie with a surprising jolt of self-reflection, but its true story will be too politically incorrect for a win; it’s lucky to be nominated. Inglorious Basterds was a strange feast of vengeance porn and a weird choice for this list, although it had some excellent performances. Up may be the most emotionally resonant animated film I’ve ever seen, and it has some homages to Spencer Tracy and Kirk Douglas — but it’s still animated, which is a kiss of death.
If I had to pick one from the films I’ve seen, it should be either Up, The Hurt Locker, or Up in the Air. Hurt Locker had some momentum until a few recent comments about how it didn’t reflect precise reality, which is usually SOP for Hollywood. Up in the Air starred George Clooney and was a brilliant but depressing look at social isolation and how it impacts even those who claim to cherish it. It didn’t wimp out and fall for a happy ending, either, which greatly disappointed the friends with whom I saw it, but instead it opted for honesty. I’m rooting for The Hurt Locker (especially since The Stoning of Soraya M didn’t get noticed by Oscar this year), but if Up or Up in the Air win, I’ll be happy. If Avatar wins, I’ll post the South Park takedown of it tomorrow.
Which film do you want to see win? Take the poll. And by the way, The Stoning of Soraya M gets released on Blu-Ray on Tuesday. Mine is already on its way.
Update: Should have been Dances with Wolves, not Dancing. Sorry about that.
Update (AP): Bumping this up top as tonight’s ceremony approaches…

Anyway, Clooney lost. That’s all that matters to me.
Marcus on March 8, 2010 at 12:06 AM
I liked Streep in Julia, but she should have been nominated for supporting actress. The other woman was in it as much or more than Julia.
sandee on March 8, 2010 at 12:06 AM
Thank God Avatar didn’t win any of the big awards. Decent movie, but how in the hell has it made over 2 1/2 billion worldwide?!
The best movie of 2009 IMO was Inglorious Basterds, but since I knew it didn’t have a prayer of winning, The Hurt Locker will suffice. At least nothing as bad as Crash was nominated this year.
Doughboy on March 8, 2010 at 12:07 AM
I doubt she put in any money…the financing for these movies can be complex, but i doubt she was out much out of pocket. She might have negotiated a fee based on the movie receipts.
Chudi on March 8, 2010 at 12:07 AM
OMG! Hollywood done lost its mind! YESYESYESYES! I’d love to see vidoes of our troops enjoying this!
katy the mean old lady on March 8, 2010 at 12:08 AM
I gotta go bed, will check tomorrow some of the buzz. Glad this will make our troops happy.
ProudPalinFan on March 8, 2010 at 12:08 AM
Avatar was terrific, but not best picture kind of stuff. I think it really fell in between categories.
AnninCA on March 8, 2010 at 12:10 AM
I actually know the Tuohy family (and Michael Oher) and can attest that Sandra Bullock nailed her portrayal of Leigh Anne. For those who don’t know, the Tuohys are some of those heartless conservatives. Oh, they’re Christians, too.
flyfisher on March 8, 2010 at 12:10 AM
Did it make enough money at the box office? I don’t think so.
Now, the investment can be recouped, and all those who need to get paid will be happy. That should be enough. This Oscar will assure everyone of that.
newton on March 8, 2010 at 12:10 AM
Lord, you are cranky!
katy the mean old lady on March 8, 2010 at 12:10 AM
Because of the maturity of the special effects. It was nearly flawless.
The story, hey…sort of Pocahontas.
But the actual technical abilities was truly astounding.
AnninCA on March 8, 2010 at 12:11 AM
When I get the chance, I’m watching it. It has been highly acclaimed in Christian circles everywhere.
newton on March 8, 2010 at 12:11 AM

Tuohy who?

Hurt Locker pro military –1 :)
dec5 on March 8, 2010 at 12:12 AM
Who got best documentary?
newton on March 8, 2010 at 12:12 AM
It’s funny, all the constant whining here about Hollywood only favors the left, and the best film is a movie that recognizes the bravery of American soldiers and the best actor portrays the life of a drunken country music singer in a heroic light. Very liberal!
bayam on March 8, 2010 at 12:13 AM
Not really. i doubt it very much, unless it makes more money on DVD. The movie has probably lost money. It cost 15M to make and it has made 21M to date. I have to do a ton of business on DVD to recoup it’s money.
Chudi on March 8, 2010 at 12:13 AM
As Bob Dylan might say, “The times, they are a’changin”
well, well, well
The Academy finally sucks it up and picks the right movie for once. Now be truthful, who among you wasn’t surprised?
I am frankly amazed and overjoyed. When I saw Hurt Locker, I was overwhelmed at just how good it was. Thank the Lord I have my Blu-Ray copy, because now they will be as scarce as Conservatives in Hollywood.
gordo on March 8, 2010 at 12:14 AM
Done and over with. The Hurt Locker.
They’re already swimming in champagne out of that place…
newton on March 8, 2010 at 12:14 AM
The Cove. I take it’s about dolphin fishing?
AnninCA on March 8, 2010 at 12:14 AM
Even funnier are the people that make blanket statements about people that post here.
daesleeper on March 8, 2010 at 12:14 AM
Don’t forget Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side. I guess this is the year Hollywood went red(as in conservative, not commie).
Doughboy on March 8, 2010 at 12:16 AM
Dolphin fishing?!?!?
newton on March 8, 2010 at 12:16 AM
I’m realy hoping you misunderstood. I;m thrilled about that award.
katy the mean old lady on March 8, 2010 at 12:16 AM
Well, this is fun. I have 3 movies now on my Must See list.
Hurt Locker, Bullock’s film, and Crazy Heart.
AnninCA on March 8, 2010 at 12:16 AM
The movie The Blind Side is about the Tuohy family, a wealthy Memphis white family, who adopted an impoverished black boy named Michael Oher. Michael starred at Ole Miss and now plays for the Baltimore Ravens. Sandra Bullock played Leigh Anne Touhy in the movie.
flyfisher on March 8, 2010 at 12:16 AM
Wow…..even Hollywood is putting this stuff in movies again?
Election 2010 maybe a bigger Conservative shift then some may think…
dec5 on March 8, 2010 at 12:16 AM
I can’t believe Fisher Stevens is now an Academy Award winner. Ben from Short Circuit has an Oscar! Poor Steve Guttenberg and Ally Sheedy are still seeking their first.
Doughboy on March 8, 2010 at 12:17 AM
Avatar is the worst piece of garbage ever put on film. I jumped for joy that it failed.
YES! I hoped it would fail!
My son said The Hurt Locker was not realistic. But never the less, I enjoyed it as it fit my impression of our troops.
csdeven on March 8, 2010 at 12:17 AM
Yeah, dolphins are caught and sold. It’s a cove in Japan.
AnninCA on March 8, 2010 at 12:17 AM
Haven’t seen Hurt Locker and because of the so-so feedback I’m not sure that I will (didn’t some Iraq veterans basically say it was laughed at by alot of the troops in Iraq and those who had served there?). I saw Blind Side which was good. I still think Bullock was good but not great — should have been Meryl who — in spite of 16 nominations — has only won twice in the 80s. The Academy long ago turned their back on talent and it’s now just a bullsh*t popularity contest.
Republican on March 8, 2010 at 12:17 AM
Even Hollywood is moving to the Right.
The pro military movie beats out the anti-american/capitalism movie for best picture.
Best actress goes to the southern rich conservative white woman with compassion.
The drunken country singer wins best actor.
lavell12 on March 8, 2010 at 12:17 AM
“Hurt Locker” wouldn’t have won 2 years ago. For obvious reasons.
Marcus on March 8, 2010 at 12:18 AM
Thanks, I got them mixed up with someone else entirely. Never heard of the movie, the family, or Michael Oher… Hard to keep up when you don’t own a TV I guess…
daesleeper on March 8, 2010 at 12:18 AM
I think you guys make too much out of Avatar’s politics. It’s Pocahontas. LOL*
It was a terrific animated film that really appealed to adults as well as kids.

Inglorious Bastards was the best movie of the Year.

Best Supporting Actor. That guy did by far the best acting job of the year, too bad he couldn’t had won best actor.

It’s about dolphin fishing. They put nets up and hide it from the public.
I presume the documentary won due to something other than the topic.

Precious was a good movie. I liked it because it exposes the myth that the demrats handout to minorities is in their best interests.
It is a brutally disturbing movie and that is why it probably didn’t win.
csdeven on March 8, 2010 at 12:24 AM

newton on March 8, 2010 at 12:24 AM
Well, maybe I need to add 2 more to my list. Inglorious Bastards or whatever didn’t appeal to me from the trailers, but it appears to be a hit with a lot of people.
And the Hangover.

Another FYI about The Blind Side…the primary money behind the movie was the film company owned by Fred Smith, the Republican founder and Chairman of Fedex. His daughter Molly was the executive producer of the film (and they are basically neighbors of the Tuohys).

Inglorious Basterds was incredible. Tarantino’s take on the spaghetti western. The scene in the tavern is something I could watch on endless loop for hours. And Christoph Waltz portrayed one of the slimiest characters I’ve seen in a movie in a long time. A well deserved Oscar for him.
Doughboy on March 8, 2010 at 12:29 AM
I only kept up with that movie because I know the Tuohys. I usually could care less. I just want someone wake me when they make another decent western.
flyfisher on March 8, 2010 at 12:30 AM
Well, it seems like this year was actually pretty decent for Hollywood. Last year was palty, in terms of real talent, etc.
This year seems to appeal to people more.
AnninCA on March 8, 2010 at 12:32 AM
Go see The Hangover with an empty bladder or you’ll piss yourself from laughing.
Inglorious BastErds was great! (don’t know why “basterds” is spelled with an “e”) The great thing about NAZI killing films is that you can be as gruesome as you like and no one will ever complain. lol

Since this is a political website, I will bring up a political issue. Until the movie The Blind Side came out last fall, I had no idea just how controversial it is among blacks for white families to adopt black kids, at least among a certain segment of the black population. I don’t know how pervasive the antagonism is, but it’s very real.
