Heart-ache: Not Gadahn?

posted at 5:43 pm on March 7, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Whenever it comes to Adam Gadahn, appearances are always deceiving, it seems.  First he’s dead, then he’s alive; then he’s out of the Taliban leadership, then back in.  Now it seems that despite earlier reports, the Taliban commander captured by the ISI is not Gadahn, at least according to CBS (via JWF):

An “important Taliban militant” was arrested today in Pakistan. But that is where the confusion started.

Earlier it was reported by Pakistani media that intelligence agents had arrested Adam Gadahn, the American-born spokesman for al Qaeda, in an operation in the southern city of Karachi.

It was further reported by the Associated Press and Reuters that Gadahn had been arrested, sourcing security officials.

CBS News was told by sources in the Pakistan government that it was Gadahn, even after U.S. officials refused to confirm it was the California native for whom a $1 million reward has been posted.

Now, CBS News’ Farhan Bokhari in Islamabad writes that earlier reports the detained individual was Gadahn proved false. According to a Pakistan security official who spoke with CBS News on condition of anonymity, the arrested individual is in fact “a Taliban militant leader who is known as Abu Yahya.”

Maybe we should have asked Radar Online?

However, don’t lose hope. Apparently, this Abu Yahya is still a big enough figure to be an important capture, if it’s not really Gadahn.  CBS also warns that it still could be Gadahn, but that we won’t know until Pakistan produces the detainee publicly.  When might that be?  I’m going to keep a close eye on Radar to find out.

Update: CNN at 6 pm ET reports that a “senior Pakistani government official” insists it’s Gadahn.

Update II: So does McClatchy at around 7 pm ET, citing multiple Pakistani sources.

Yep. But it won’t be long until we all get banned and there’s nothing left here but dipsh!ts like this rjl character. I wouldn’t be surprised if Chuckles isn’t offered a blogging spot here, eventually.

FB is simple enough that a caveman can do it. Come on over neurosculptor your presence and contributions would be greatly welcome. HA is about to squish in on itself.

I don’t know what the hey went down here tonight, but if JiangxiDad is banned from this site this is my last comment here.

Guy commenting on HA for who knows how long deserves better if that is the case.

If the HIG is spotted departing for Pakistan with an ACLU lawyer and a stack of Rights Warning forms, it is Gadahn.

Holy schmolly! Sure didn’t see J-Dad’s comment @6:19 which has disk-appeared, amazingly enough. Must of missed quite the dust up, can anyone provide any detail? He’s one of the most reasoned, thoughtful posters here…IMO.

OT:, but not…I’m on FB, and am “friends” with lots of y’all there, but I still don’t get it.

I missed the offending comment, and any discourse between JianxiDad and AllahP, but if, judging from subsequent comments, a incitation to violence was made, then I must point out that AllahP – at least twice, has warned against such posts recently.

Since I didn’t see it either, I can’t comment, but I guess simple little Chewy (who does ride the short bus), is a little confused how you can “Threaten violence” over the internet.

I get that you shouldn’t call names, discuss harming people, and generally being mean, but none of that is J-Dad’s M.O., and if it amounts to maybe a little bluer version of the phrase, “Pound sand,” count me among the confused.
Were folks’ sensibilities offended? Was someone truly threatened? Or, was the language so offensive as to warrant banning? Only the second and third options, per the rules of this site would be legitimate.

C’mon! Get a grip, I truly do understand the difference in the the right to speak freely and the abuse of that privilege, but, holy schmoke! Don’t call yourself a conservative website and figuratively “off” a long-time, reasoned, rational contributor without at lease alluding to the reason for the rest of your, um, CUSTOMERS. Not saying it wasn’t justified, but I find it hard to believe.
Again, I didn’t see the offensive post, but if there was only one????? Just sayin’.

Chewy the Lab on March 7, 2010 at 9:51 PM

Chewy the Lab on March 7, 2010 at 9:51 PM

Yes, that’s why I pointed out that I missed the relavent posts, and judged by the posts that others made, afterwards.

I also believe that only a threat to ban was made, and JianxiDad departed of his own accord.

As to the offending post, I think it was general, in nature, and AllahP has repeatedly warned about inciting/proposing insurrection, etc.

Exactly, I’m not feeling the great vibes that used to be HA…and we don’t know where the quicksand is…

Not right to leave us without knowing what was wrong, when a valued contributor is banned…

I am a firm believer in the rights of the moderators, but WTF happened???

lovingmyUSA on March 7, 2010 at 10:03 PM

Wild guess here.

Yes they got him
BUT
They, the White House doesn’t know what to do with him.

So we get the conflicting ping-pong “yes we do” “no we don’t”
AKA Not ready for Prime time Admin of Obama!

lovingmyUSA on March 7, 2010 at 10:24 PM

Yes, it is a bit puzzling, at times. I’ve always understood the “pitchforks and tar” references to be a euphemism for strong feelings about perceived injustice, rather than a direct threat to harm some-one. Being an old, unused punishment, it doesn’t carry the weight of a more common method, and can be taken as a description of feeling, rather than intent.

At least, that’s the way I judge such comments.

OldEnglish on March 7, 2010 at 10:33 PM

There has always been a lack of consistency in defining the rules of conduct. It is completely subjective on the part of the mods. I assume the new business model may be playing some part.

OK…wtf happened here? Doesn’t sound like AP banned him…did JiangxiDad swallow the poison pill? Say it ain’t so, Dad!

Jaibones on March 8, 2010 at 9:09 AM

If he’s an American jihadist who looks like Ghadan and has a name that sounds like Ghadan (according to last night’s MSM report) captured by Pakhistani forces who have identified him as Ghadan, that’s who he most likely is.

How inconvenient for Obama’s administration would it be to drag out another DISTRACTION slowing/halting his domestic agenda?

Try Ghadan for treason in the US while attempting to reform McCain’s Comprehensive Illegal Immigration Package into law?

Not to mention this capture distracting from passing Obama’s HealthCare.

maverick muse on March 8, 2010 at 10:27 AM

did JiangxiDad swallow the poison pill? Say it ain’t so, Dad!

Jaibones on March 8, 2010 at 9:09 AM

Possibly, but his post was deleted…which makes it look like more of a ban…

Ed and Allah get to make banning decisions, of course. But in the case of longterm commenters like JiangxiDad, I’d hope a little fair warning could be part of the process.

Missy on March 8, 2010 at 10:58 AM

Missy on March 8, 2010 at 10:58 AM

Is anyone sure what makes a poster bannable? I’m not, and I was here long before Morrisey. I’ve seen some pretty vile wish lists on methods of execution for someone like Gadahm without a murmer out of AP regarding violence. When someone falls due to the ban hammer and management refuses to discuss it with the posters and just eliminates the evidence, it creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and rumor. This wasn’t handled well.
