Breaking: Pakistanis capture American-born Taliban commander? Update: AP, NBC reporting Gadahn captured; Update: CBS says not so fast
posted at 12:59 pm on March 7, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Well, maybe. NBC News apparently had this breaking on Twitter, but thus far none of the American wire services have picked it up as yet. Pakistan’s Dawn reports that their intel services, working with the CIA, seized an American-born Taliban commander. But is it the American traitor that we’ve come to know as Fat Bastard, Adam Gadahn?
Pakistani security forces along with help of US intelligence arrested Abu Yahya Mujahdeen Al- Adam, who is a close associate of Osama Bin Laden. Abu Yahya was arrested on Sunday from an area surrounding the super highway, on the outskirts of Karachi.
Sources confirmed that the arrested militant commander has been shifted to Islamabad for further investigation.
Pennsylvania-born Abu Yahya is a US citizen and assumed to be a commander of foreign militants fighting in Afghanistan against the US. He was living with Osama Bin Ladin after 9/11 attacks in New York. His name is included in the top ten wanted on the CIA list.
The CIA does not have a handy Top Ten list of wanted terrorists; hopefully, they want them all. The FBI does have a list of its top wanted terrorists, though, and has this listing for Gadahn:
Aliases: Abu Suhayb Al-Amriki, Abu Suhail Al-Amriki, Abu Suhayb, Yihya Majadin Adams, Adam Pearlman, Yayah, Azzam the American, Azzam Al-Amriki
Coincidentally, or perhaps confusing the reports, Gadahn has a new tape out today as well. He wants Muslims in the American military to follow the example of Nidal Hasan and start committing massacres on bases:
Al-Qaida’s American-born spokesman on Sunday called on Muslims serving in the U.S. armed forces to emulate the Army major charged with killing 13 people in Fort Hood.
In a 25-minute video posted on militant Web sites, Adam Gadahn described Maj. Nidal Hasan as a pioneer who should serve as a role model for other Muslims, especially those serving Western militaries.
“Brother Nidal is the ideal role-model for every repentant Muslim in the armies of the unbelievers and apostate regimes,” he said.
Gadahn, also known as Azzam al-Amriki, was dressed in white robes and wearing a white turban as he called for attacks on what he described as “high-value targets.”
Is this the man whom Dawn reports has been captured? Gadahn has been the subject of unsubstantiated rumors in the past. US forces thought they’d killed him in a rocket attack several months ago. He survived that attempt, but has not usually been considered a “commander” in the military sense, more of a propagandist. We’ll see if Dawn’s report is true, but at least one detail would be wrong if it’s Gadahn; he was born in Oregon, not Pennsylvania. This could be another American traitor, or a confused and erroneous report.
Update: NBC now reports that the Pakistanis have Gadahn:
The word came from sources cited by The Associated Press and Pakistani news Web sites.
An intelligence source confirmed the reports to NBC News, and photographs supplied to NBC of the detained suspect corroborated the accounts.
Gadahn was detained in Sohrab Goth, a suburb of Karachi, and was later moved to the capital Islamabad, the source added.
The AP has followed suit:
Pakistani intelligence agents have arrested Adam Gadahn, the American-born spokesman for al-Qaida, in an operation in the southern city of Karachi, two officers and a government official said Sunday.
The arrest of Gadahn is a major victory in the U.S.-led battle against al-Qaida and will be taken as a sign that Pakistan is cooperating more fully with Washington. It follows the recent detentions of several Afghan Taliban commanders in Karachi.
Gadahn was arrested in the sprawling southern metropolis in recent days, two officers who took part in the operation said. A senior government official also confirmed the arrest.
Gadahn should be tried for treason, and if convicted, hung at the gallows. Let’s hope the Obama administration understands that.
Update II: Just a thought; it seems as though Pakistan has suddenly become a lot more effective at finding high-value targets in the Af-Pak theater. Has the ISI decided to stamp out the Taliban and/or al-Qaeda? If so, what’s changed? I’d be happy to give Obama credit for it if it’s something the US did.
Update III: Bill Roggio’s sources say that it really is Gadahn this time.
Update IV: I have a fresh post on this, but just to make sure it’s noted here, CBS reported this afternoon that it’s not Gadahn.

“it seems as though Pakistan has suddenly become a lot more effective at finding high-value targets in the Af-Pak theater.”
In the context of the Mumbai attack, these terrorist operations have now become a potential strategic security threat. They have moved from being an international “irritant” and criminal issue to being a force that can start a nuclear war between states.
Pakistan has traditionally seen the Taliban as a security asset. Having “friendly” elements in control of a large area of Afghanistan provided “defense in depth” for a lightly defended Northwestern Pakistani border. This is now offset by the security threat they pose both internationally and domestically.

If Obama had anything to do with this good on him, credit when due. I believe that the Pakistanis should sell raffle tickets to allow 3 Americans to spend 5 minutes in a locked room with this asshole. They could raise a tremendous amount of money and three lucky folks could have the time of their life. Anger relief through violence can be very soothing.

Good question. I’ll offer that it is several things combined to cause it:
– Musharraf replaced by popularly elected politicians that want to keep their careers
– Attacks within Pakistan by the Talib/AQ nexus
– Uproar over attacks and the failure of the radical Muslim street.
– Success breeds more success.
I don’t know whether some at ISI have been replaced over time, but that might also have something to do with it.

The question remains whether or not Pakistan will hand him over to US authorities. I hope so – he is a US citizen and has few recourses.

Kinda. Right-winger doesn’t necessarily mean an advocate for limited government. The “right wing” does traditionally include fascists, monarchists, and theocrats.

As he is an American citizen, I doubt that Gadahn will be tried via a court martial. Besides, it is a civilian court that has indicted Gadahn for treason:

{unclesmrgol on March 7, 2010 at 2:05 PM}
So, what are the chances the WH told the Pakistanis that they needed a terrorist for a civilian trial and asked them to deliver Gadahn?
Dusty on March 7, 2010 at 2:10 PM
Notice the trend…
Pakistani intelligence is going after FOREIGN Al Q and Taliban types.
They are not going after their own citizens… sounds to me like they finaly figured out that if they get the Foreigners out, we’ll quit playing in (and blowing up) their yard…

ted c on March 7, 2010 at 2:36 PM
I’m sure you know about this, and you’re just being obtuse for fun, but the left-right political axis gets the name due to political affiliations during the French Revolution, when the Aristocracy sat on the right side of the Speaker and the “commoners” sat on the left. Originally the “Left” included support for civil liberties and republicanism. Now the “Left” stands for control of society, as you pointed out.
Liberal used to mean advocating free markets. Now it means worshiping at the altar of ManBearPig.
Our labels that we’ve taken from 18th century France are grossly insufficient, to say the least.

+1000. We are badly in need of updated terminology to address both the time gap and the national differences…but that is a monumental task. Every politically-oriented book and article for the last several generations would be made obsolete by such a change, and that’s just for starters.

It does seem that the Pakistanis are doing a better job of rounding up the terrorists hiding in their country.
My take is that after the election of Obama, knowing that he is weak, they knew that they couldn’t count on the support and help they need from him.
Since the terrorists have designs on taking over the Pakistani government and so get control of their nukes, they are smart enough to see that they can’t trust Obama to have their backs.

Personally, I think it was ISI complicity in the bombing that killed those CIA agents in Afghanistan. No way the Taliban ran a months-long, sophisticated double-agent program. No way. That operation was conducted by a professional intelligence agency.
So, confronted with evidence of their complicity, the ISI decided to play ball rather than be annihilated.

Well, I didn’t know that before now. I have often wondered where this convoluted and ill-defined concept of political ‘left’ and ‘right’ came from.
I agree that the terms are useless for intelligent discussion and I try never to use them. Most of the time they seem to mean whatever the speaker/writer wants them to mean.

Okay. Let’s see . . . a ‘good’ Muslim lives for: the Glory of Allah, submits to the ‘will’ of Allah in all things, and places the well-being [and success] of the Ummah before all other things.

If this guy is an American, then I fully support hauling his duff into federal court under the charge of treason. This is the case that should go before Americans, this is the case that should be shown to this country, this is where a jury of *his peers* ought to be able to deliberate and consider the evidence, and, if necessary, have that evidence put into the public domain. This is what some call a *teachable moment*.

Your post further illustrates the problems inherent in our confusing and out-dated Left-Right poltical axis.
Monarchists/theocrats have been defined on the “Right” since the origin of the term in 18th century France.
Collectivism is not the sole province of the Left. Nor is collectivism vs. free markets the only defining feature of the left-right political axis. Yes, many on the modern Left are collectivists. And many on the modern Right are against collectivism. Nonetheless, one can be a collectivist and be on the “Right.”

It is not my dislike of Obama that has made him seem weak, it has been his own words and actions.
Do you dispute that the terrorists would like to overthrow the government of Pakistan and have access to their nuclear weapons?
When Bush was president, the world was content to let him fight this so they could sit back and criticize. Under Obama they don’t have quite the certitude that the US will move to protect them.

A couple of far left loons on the jury, and he walks. Then Obama gets to say, “We could have convicted him, if not for George Bush….” Law and order is pretty much dead in this country, particularly when it comes to Islamofascism. Photos of WHOM? addresses written on the back perhaps? Afghanistan and Pakistan want us out. Code Pink and Obama want us out. Obama has given us a timeline for getting out. If these leaders aren’t caught/killed etc then how can he say in 2011 that the time is right for us to get out? Someone has decided that it is better to give up the top 50 minus a few and have the remnants disburse and regroup somewhere else. And if he can bring the troops home and have caught the top 25-50 then he will sell that in 2012 he can concentrate on the economy and please just reelect him and be patient.

Since they fit so well on the right, why did the Isalmiats side with the Nazis during WWII? Why does the koran express the same philosophy as Mein Kamph?
Nazis were socialists, loved muslims. Both hate jews.
The whole left right thing is a misdirection begun during WWII with the rise of the Communists – on the left was USSR, on the right was Nazi Germany. The communist spin was that this mirrored the left and right side of the Bench in the English Parliament, and so today many came to believe that this has something to do with US political parties.
As long as people keep arguing left right in US politics, the waters remain muddied and the real communists can move freely. Most people today are so poorly educated that they can see nothing different between a Republican, a Democrate or a Communist. Nor do they have the faintest idea how those parties came to be or waht they stand for and against.
However, since the modern Democratic Party folded US Communists into it back in the 80s, it has become more and more difficult to tell which Democrate isn’t a communist or pushes the same ideas.
There’s a Communist Living in the White House

His original last name was Pearlman which is typically a Jewish name, not Arab. What little research I have done shows that his family were pro-Israel and Christian. He lost his way as an adolescent.
He was indicted for treason in 2006 by a federal grand jury meaning he will be tried on the federal level. Punishment is either death or life imprisonment. I say he goes to SuperMax, fed pork at least twice a day and piped in Christian music 24/7. He will wish he was dead.

You are correct that the Left-Right political spectrum is outdated and unhelpful. It is better to not use the terms at all, as they do nothing to bring clarity to discussion, and, as you pointed out, create a great deal of confusion.
July 10 on March 7, 2010 at 4:30 PM
It is difficult, but made slightly simpler by keeping in mind that the left-right paradigm means something different in the US than it does in Europe and the rest of the world.
In American terms, you can’t just say theocracy=rightist, because American leftists support various Middle Eastern theocracies in their wars against what leftists perceive as rightist hegemony in the US and Europe. That’s just one example.
It’s never going to fall together in neat packages, anyway.

The media in US has COVERED the increasing frustration and dislike the Pakistani mullahs have voiced against US /NATO actions in Af-Pak region .
What they have COVERED-UP is the reasoning behind those voices of frustrations.
In pakistan, there is this debate going on if their collaboration with US has yielded them anything ?
Pakistanis have died or injured and yet they don’t have Kashmir yet. They know that as long as they have foreign troops in that region, they can never divert their forces to take Kashmir. Thats why the Pakistanis are grabbing all foreign taliban, who just happen to be in Karachi and Faisalabad and Rawalpindi, but they are not touching Pakistani taliban.
Its like that Pakistanis want all foreigners to GTH out of there so they can get on with killing Hindus and taking Kashmir, which is what their mullahs want. And with the taliban still under their “custody”, they can be activated anytime to take the territory of Afghanistan too. But first US forces have to leave. And Hussain is playing along……
macncheez on March 7, 2010 at 4:49 PM
The “Left’s” tacit or blatant support of various theocracies is an excellent example of hypocrisy, but does little to move “theocracy” on the traditional Left-Right political spectrum.
If theocracy is not on the “Right” than the Left-Right political spectrum is completely meaningless. (Which, come to think of it, is what I’m trying to say.)
