You know what America needs now? A brutal political battle over amnesty
posted at 8:25 pm on March 5, 2010 by Allahpundit
Ever vigilant, the boss emeritus urges us to prepare for Grahamnesty. These stories about the White House’s big new immigration push pop up every few months, and invariably they’re forgotten a few days later as The One returns to his all-consuming health-care obsession.
But maybe this time is different.
Obama took up the issue privately with his staff Monday in a bid to advance a bill through Congress before lawmakers become too distracted by approaching midterm elections…
Participants in the White House gathering also pointed to an immigration rally set for March 21 in Washington as a way to spotlight the issue and build needed momentum.
Though proponents of an immigration overhaul were pleased that the White House isn’t abandoning the effort, they also want Obama to take on a more assertive role, rather than leave it to Congress to work out a compromise…
But with the healthcare debate still unresolved, Democrats are wary of plunging into yet another polarizing issue. “Right now we have a little problem with the ‘Chicken Little’ mentality: The sky is falling and consequently we can’t do anything,” Rep. Raul M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) said in an interview.
If anyone can deliver immigration reform to America, it’s an “assertive” president with a 45 percent approval rating who’s lost three big state elections in a row. The goal apparently is to move the bill by early May per the logic that congressmen will be too focused on the midterms after that to take on an issue as divisive as this. Which is hilarious, because if you think they’re not already focused on the midterms after the water torture of this endless ObamaCare process, you’re an even bigger chump than the amnesty shills who think The One’s finally ready to go bat for them. Or are you? Graham is apparently on board, which means they may have 60 votes even if the rest of the GOP votes as a bloc. Then again, there’s zero chance that Blanche Lincoln’s voting for amnesty this year, so that puts them back at 59. And in this case, given the mistrust in the House towards the Senate over O-Care, Reid really would have to go first; there’s no way Pelosi’s going to force imperiled Blue Dogs to vote on an amnesty bill unless Senate Dems have already proved they can get their own bill through.
The wild card is the GOP. Obama obviously wants to use this as wedge issue, to try to cut the Dems’ losses in November by reminding Latino voters that Republicans are “nativists” or whatever. That’ll create huge pressure among moderates like Scott Brown to join with the Dems, which means it may fall to the House GOP to make a tough decision. Do they bite the bullet and vote for amnesty this time, if only to preserve their chances of taking back the House in November, or do they hold out as a bloc in the knowledge that there may be enough red-district Blue Dogs forced to vote no that the bill will not only go down, but go down with bipartisan opposition?
My sense of this has always been that The One expects a new immigration effort to fail and is only interested in placating amnesty groups by showing them that, hey, he tried. But if that’s true, why on earth would he push ahead with it this year? If the bill fails because of Blue Dog opposition, the suppressed turnout among Latinos could make the midterms a Category 5 hurricane for Dems. Exit question: When McCain inevitably votes no on this to prevent Hayworth from using it to destroy him, what’s his excuse going to be?

Doubling a poll result, especially when he’d be running against people like Palin and Romney, would require a miracle.
Everyone will be running on fiscal responsibility and small government in 2012, and a chunk of them will actually have a small government record.
If it’s a choice between a small government conservative who’s strong on national defense and doesn’t have Truther/newsletter baggage, or one that’s fiscally responsible but can’t carry strong defense cons, the latter will have one hell of an uphill battle.
I don’t mean to cut out early on you, especially since this has been a civil dialogue, but we have family coming in tonight. And for some reason my better half won’t tolerate my butt being in front of the computer. So until tomorrow…

Obama thinks he’s being clever on this push. The dumb ass doesn’t realize that this is a sword that cuts BOTH ways. Amnesty failed last time when the economy was good. What makes him think things will go better this time?

Doubt Lincoln would be the only Dem no vote. Byrd, Dorgan, Melson, Pryor and Webb all voted against amnesty last time (there were also several far-left Dems who voted against it because it didn’t go far enough, altho they’d probably be on board an Obama-supported bill). Dorgan used to attack amnesty on Lou Dobbs. Maybe now that he’s retiring he’ll join Dobbs in flipping on it. And maybe Nelson will flip because he figures he’s toast now anyway due to health care. But the Dems would probably lose at least one or two votes besides Lincoln.

I’ve been saying this since November 2008.
A) Cram health care entitlement through at any cost.
B) Cram amnesty through at any cost.
C) Millions of new Mexican-American citizens voting for the people who gave them health care and citizenship
D) Perpetual entitlement-enthralled majority = Socialist transformation.
I know, I know. It sounds almost too diabolical and far-fetched to be true. But based on the reckless abandon and seemingly illogical march forward of the Socialists, I’m beginning to fear that they are contemptuous enough of the American people to try.

We also have a huge influx of Muong immigrants here also. It is a big burden on our local resources in many aspects.
wi farmgirl on March 5, 2010 at 9:37 PM
True, but the Shamnesty rationale was there were all these jobs going begging because Americans wouldn’t do them, and the illegals would. So just to get the work done, the employers had to hire illegals. The law needed to be changed to meet this “economic reality.”
Yes, it’s lousy logic, but that was basically the rationale last time they tried Shamnesty.

FIFY
When will these idiots, especially Grahamnesty and McCain, realize that REWARDING illegal aliens with their ill-gotten goods – residency – will only greatly INCREASE future illegal border crossings – no matter how many walls we build?
Put yourself in the position of a Latin American (or Asian or Swede or whatever) contemplating illegally entering our country – would the hope of amnesty encourage or discourage you from crossing?
Duh.
We need to stop all rewards, benefits, and handouts to illegal aliens, and especially eliminate the possibility of amnesty, to discourage illegal border crossings.
It’s so obvious to anyone who thinks with their brain instead of their heart.
And if you feel sorry for poor folks in other countries – push for a Marshall plan to help those countries help their own citizens – don’t import their problems to our country.

with the current mood of the electorate, i see no downside to opposing this amnesty crap with everything we’ve got. not only are republicans in a fighting mood, but there are many, many independents and democrats who are not, at least in this economy, in favor of amnesty for a bunch of illegals. that ship sailed a couple of years ago. i truly believe there are enough people who may have once been in favor of amnesty but are now opposed to it because of the economy and because of obama’s push to ruin this country.

As I keep trying to explain to you, The Precedent doesn’t care if he can delvier anything. He doesn’t care one whit whether any legislation passes, or not. All The Precedent wants is to cause chaos through the process. If he can pass awful legislation and speed America’s ruin through that, then he’ll be doubly happy, but he is quite satisfied tearing America apart merely through the process, and by abusing those processes (as with health scare) to turn them into something they have never, ever been.
The Precedent is driven only by the desire to harm America. Trying to push awful legislation which will tear the GOP (and the Dems, incidentally) apart is exactly what he is aiming for – whether anything passes or not.

The SW mainly has Mexicans, Guatamalens, Hondurans, etc. BIG difference in levels of poverty, education and legality.

The last time McCain brought this issue up, the ugliness was astounding and drove people away from conservatives.
It is, indeed, a wedge issue, and that’s the point.
As for his willingness to divide the country more, that’s predictable with Obama.
He’s been doing this since the primary, and pundits wrote accolades about how brilliant his campaign was.
It remains highly chaotic, divisive, and disgusting.

I have a different take: Obama and his hard-left entourage came to give us all a sense of wonder by remaking the country in their dark utopian image, but faced with certain overwhelming Congressional upheaval in November, time is running short.
I look forward to Obama’s media blitz on this bill, whether a new 1000+ pager, or the shriveled corpse of the last monstrosity. It’ll be a masterpiece of racial resentment stoking that may push an already financially strapped populace over the edge into violence.
If it passes, a great victory and a Democratic voting majority forever. If it loses, Republicans will gleefully be painted as nasty, bigoted racists, helping to bolster his image among the perennially angry left and minorities for the recently begun re-election campaign. Win-win, for him now, and in the future for a permanent left Democratic government. The country be damned.
Nichevo on March 6, 2010 at 4:12 AM
Obama wants to turn the USA into a socialist country one way or another. If not with socialized medicine, with legalizing anti-American socialist block of people who will be a PERMANENT democrat voting block. The GOP is fooling itself if it thinks that latinos will ever vote for them in large #s. That was proven by Mr. Amnesty himself, MCCain. So, since latinos are not going to vote republican anyway, why cater to them? IF Latinos vote for republicans that is because thy have become conservatives and woke up, rare event. They will not vote for republicans because they are supposedly social conservative, as African-Americans are way more conservative in that respect as shown by Prop 8 where latinos voted almost like whites and black people voted 70% for prop 8, thus, the more socially conservative group of the 2. And even though African-Americans are more socially conservative than latinos and whites, they still vote democrat. What does that tell the GOP? They need to stick to principles and stop trying to destroy the republican party permanently. They must be SUICIDAL!
immigrantchick on March 6, 2010 at 8:29 AM
The reason I know latinos are largely a pseudo-socialist group is that they mainly come from countries like that. Just look at LAtin America, it is all commie or socialist. When you are raised with that mentality, even if not socialist yourself, you are used to the idea of government running almost everything and hence, you don’t get immigrants who believe in individualism and small non-intrusive government. The only way that happens if the country is so oppressive, like Cuba and Venezuela, that you get turned off of the whole government idea.
immigrantchick on March 6, 2010 at 8:33 AM
AS somebody who has personal experience with lots of immigrants and even illegal immigrants, I know for a fact that once they get legalized, they will stop working for the smaller wages, demand larger wages and benefits and then the greedy businesses that hire illegals will demand more illegals. What then, legalize them too? This country is becoming a mish mash full of uneducated people who can barely read and write in their own language. This is not the way to build a strong country. This is a way to destroy it. We should only allow immigrants in who are persecuted or are educated and we need them. Of course, with unemployment the way it is, we need to first look to Americans. If n American is available to do a job, then they can give a visa to someone else, but not permanent status. That should be reserved for rare occasions at this time, people need to assimilate first. And again, I can say this, I am an immigrant. And I cannot tell you how many countless immigrants I have seen, legal ones and illegal ones, who simply take advantage of the system in this country, it is disgusting.

By legalizing the twenty million law breakers, Obmam can announce the immediate creation of 20 million new jobs, on the books, at the same time
I await the lawsuits to transfer Social Security contributions from the illegally used numbers, to the new numbers issued the twenty million new citizens, since these people have done no harm, and broken no laws the President cares about.
As victims of unjust border and immigration law, they will seek reparation
Meanwhile everytime I hear the word ‘amnesty’ the ugly head of L. Graham pops out of his rathole to talk about mean spiritedness. Wherever L. Graham is, the long arm of J. McCain is always in hand shaking range
McCain is if nothing else a professional, and he has created a camo using new and shining stars, launched by himself, to deflect folk from remembering what havoc he has wreaked. Graham is the reminder of the real McCain, fighting mean spiritedness that comes whenever people want the law followed

Obama’s only priority is to get healthcare passed. Since 1944 that has been the goal of the communist and socilist; to get a nationlized health bill passed. They have said for decades that it was the only way that they could get passed the American peoples rejection of socialism. Obama has been groomed to do that since he was a child, by the best communist and socialist living in our country. Once he has accomplished that goal,it does not matter what he does, or what happens to the democrates now in office. The government they represent will be changeing as the consitition becomes irrelevent since centralized government which defines a democracy, which is a requirement of socialism, is not supported by it. If he fails they know that short of creating as much conflict and division as possible, there will not be another chance.
Covering every American with “basic” healthcare where each gets a “limited” benifit is the wolf in sheeps clothing but the depth and wording of the bill, one they don’t want anyone to read or fully understand what is in it, is the danger. It creates a new government with hidden laws and open interpetations that differ from implied intent. It is effectively a socialist constitution.

Now the other thing is, how WILLING are they to give up some of their habits and culture to blend in here; how willing are they to not be so proud as to refuse to learn English? Why? Because they want the whole enchilada of the US to speak Spanish. I speak from experience. And not here!

ITA-I wanna know the amount of Latinos registered to vote; or how many Mickey Mouses will vote. We Latinos are a stubborn bunch. Ask Mr. PPF!
ProudPalinFan on March 6, 2010 at 6:51 PM
Mr. PPF told me he used to do farm work for other properties when he was a student, of course that was way minimum to cover some student expenses. Why don’t we tell our teenagers to get off their butts and Wiis to run a John Deere?

Jay Severin–talk radio host out of Boston–has been predicting this as a next step for Obama for quite a while now. According to Jay (if I’m remembering him correctly) Obama has been losing the white suburban Catholic vote in droves and he knows that without them he cannot–he will not–win re-election. However, if he can legalize all the illegals in this country and thereby get their votes he’ll easily win in 2012.
He doesn’t want to be a one-termer–all of that talk about being a good or great one-term president is crap. He wants that second term and he’ll do whatever he has to do to get it.

Too bad I can’t work as a translator over there. Yeah there’s lots of Mexicans in NW PA, E of OH too. Land owners pay them “under the table” and keep them low so nobody notices them.
Because there’s been more interventions, etc., these farmers are very careful now. But for whatever reason these Mexicans think that I am around to catch them.

I like this photo of Barrack: He looks pensive, but I know he is just getting ready to pick his nose when he thinks people are distracted.
What a perfect juvenile!

I don’t care how they spin shamnesty, they can’t get around this statement with 85% of the voters of any political stripe:
Seal the borders, process the legal immigrants, then maybe we will talk about letting people with no regard for our laws become citizens.

Good analysis, AP. Thanks.
My bet: Obama can’t resist rolling it out as a wedge issue. Blue Dogs will jump ship, and Obama will have another disaster on his hands.
Bring it on, Barry! Community organize this one for us.

Despite horror stories of too-young workers running heavy equipment, most companies would never allow a modern teenager to run something like a tractor…and can you really blame them?
I ran a front-loader on my uncle’s farm and did darn well for 5 minutes of training (although playing tank simulators helped a bunch), but the market is flooded with displaced people who are certified and/or have years of experience.
Too many jobs have been replaced by robots, machinery, or illegals and we’re really up a river now.

If you’re not a total knucklehead, you’ll notice Obama is going to try for amnesty to increase the numbers of immigrants both legally and illegally to permanently change the demographics. Why? Most GOP voters are White, Some minorities vote Republican, especially Hispanics. The GOP tried and still wants to pander to immigrants with Welfare programs, bilingualism, identity politics, etc. The Karl Rove, George Bush, John McCain style of GOP politics. Which is neither Conservative nor American in my opinion. Anyway it wasn’t even that successful, they never got a majority of their vote. So what do we need to do? We need assimilation for immigrants obviously! Which means you need to cut the numbers coming in. Drop it from a 1.5 million legal/illegal a year down to 300,000. We had 1 million immigrants come yearly from 1890-1920. Even though it was skilled, legal and assimilation was promoted throughout our society, the numbers still impacted our society, due to ethnic enclaves forming, animosity amongst natives and foreigners due to non-assimilation. Anyway the numbers were cut for 40 years creating the “melting pot”. In 1965, all of this was repealed and the Hart-Cellar Act changed the demographics and the numbers of who was to come here. To Continue: Enforce our interior laws, Build a border, then enforce it. English made the official language, American culture promoted and practiced everywhere. There was just an article on Rick Perry recently, he’s another guy that has Conservative positions until you hit immigration. He gave a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of San Antonio in FEB 2008, chastising people against illegal immigration as having hateful rhetoric? While Mr. Perry was playing footsie with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce he didn’t mention the nationalism and racism promoted by the Mexican government to indoctrinate their citizens to come to the USA illegally. This issue will expose him eventually. The speech is on Rick Perry’s governor’s website. If you want Hispanics or anyone’s vote for that matter, approach them as Americans and as a Conservative. If that still doesn’t work, If we’re still at 44% then So be it. We could do more with that 44% based on Conservative principles then with a majority of 56% bought and paid for with non-assimilation and an even more expanded welfare state.

Well, Obama DID say he wanted to ‘transform’ America; well, he’s DOING it! Our country is going to be SO diverse with all the different languages, cultures, religions and holidays that America as we USED to know it will be no more – it will be ‘transformed’, including our way of living – SOCIALISM.

Heck I am ticked off and I want Puerto Rico to become the 51st. State Of The Union! Imagine born American with everything, get sent to war, shed blood for this country, and NOT be able to vote for Obozo.
How’s 2nd American Citizenship workin for us? What hurts me the most, is that Andrew Card, both Bushes supported statehood for us, can’t remember Clinton (perhaps) b/c he took good care of us. That’s why Hillary won in PR in the primaries for POTUS. Now this is awkward. We have a say on who the POTUS will be on the Democrat side, but not on the Republican side.
Any change to the rules, and more TLC to Puerto Rico? That’s except of sending a dumb letter to PR or send Andy Card himself to read the letter? They are only seeing one side of the coin (of course, thousands of us want statehood).
Republicans better pay closer attention to US Territories as well. Most of them think that POTUSes don’t care about the islands.

It makes no sense to vote against all Republicans because of someone like Graham. He needs to be taken care of by his constituents.
