Video: Reid celebrates “big day in America”

posted at 10:48 am on March 5, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

If Harry Reid wasn’t already finished in politics, this clip would absolutely bury him. As it is, it suffices as an example of the blindness of Beltway living. Celebrating the loss of 36,000 jobs in the American economy in February may be one of the most clueless political statements ever seen:

We lost 26,000 in January, which means the rate of job loss per day went up rather significantly. That qualifies as a “big day”? Is this what Democrats see as an improvement? It certainly speaks to the expectations they want to set with the American people, and should win the George Orwell Award.

The biggest day in America will be when Dingy loses in a landslide this November.

Knucklehead on March 5, 2010 at 10:54 AM

Its entirely feasible that every single job in America could be lost, meaning 100% un-employment, and Reid would happily approach the microphone and say:

Great news! Job losses in the last month dropped to zero. Its workng! All praise Obama!

Clueless does not describe those in leadership positions in Congress. Vapid? Vegetative state? Sleep walking?

BobMbx on March 5, 2010 at 10:55 AM

It’ll be a big day on November 3 when this tool loses his job.

Rocks on March 5, 2010 at 10:55 AM

I am in shock. Just in shock. Between this and the Dingell piece from Headlines, it really is just seeming like there’s not even a milliliter of common sense anywhere in the Democratic Party. The Democrats were bonkers weird during the Clinton years, but they did occasionally make sense and not completely insult the intelligence of the American people every time they opened their mouths. But this new group is literally incapable of telling the truth, or saying things in a way that shows they have even the slightest respect for the people who put them in office.

Despicable, the whole lot.

The heartless and cruelness of this, is beyone my comprehension. Mr.Reid, does it not occurr to you that adding those thousands to the already high number of unemployed is nothing to celebrate?

WHERE ARE THE JOBS???? Oh that’s right. They’re in the health care crap! *sigh*

capejasmine on March 5, 2010 at 10:56 AM

Only 36,000 lost their jobs TODAY! That would be a rate of over a million per month. Over 13 million in a year. In what possible universe can that be “good”? Is “good” defined only by the fact that it could have been worse?

Kissmygrits on March 5, 2010 at 10:58 AM

Okay Okay…We all hate Harry.

I saw this on Drudge too.

But can I see this in it’s entirety so I can justify my rage at this idiot. It’s only 8 seconds.

Does he say well we didn’t lose 100,000 but we only lost 36,000 so it ain’t as bad as it could be.

Oh Hell, I can’t defend him….I was trying to be non partisian. He’s an idiot.

And yet, during the Bush years when millions and millions of jobs were actually being created, the Democrats and MSM thought it wasn’t good enough.

UltimateBob on March 5, 2010 at 10:59 AM

Like I said in the other thread, truly depressing and frightening stuff when the Dems are so numb to the idea of tens of thousands of Americans losing their jobs every month, that 36,000 jobs lost in 28 days is considered a good thing.

yubley on March 5, 2010 at 11:00 AM

Why do I get the distinct feeling there are 36,000 former
workers out there who would very much like to see this man’s head handed to him?

I mean, does this fool even hear the things that are coming out of his own mouth these days? Is he that damned dense?

pilamaye on March 5, 2010 at 11:00 AM

Daveyardbird on March 5, 2010 at 11:00 AM

If one measures success by the amount of lessening failure they’ve inflicted, then, yes, a grand day.

I suspect that Tuesday, November 2, 2010 will be a big day in America.

juanito on March 5, 2010 at 11:01 AM

From the labor report:

In February, the number of unemployed persons, at 14.9 million, was essentially unchanged, and the unemployment rate remained at 9.7 percent.

Nearly 15 million Americans are unemployed, Congress and the filthy lying coward in the White House are more concerned about healthcare reform. This is Harry Reid’s idea of “big day.” Each of those 15 million Americans is a person and the tone-deaf Congress only sees them a numbers.

UltimateBob on March 5, 2010 at 11:01 AM

Only from the lips of a liberal/democrat is the loss of jobs something to celebrate.
If ever there is a debate as to how the dems feels about the citizens they represent…here is the only clip or quote that one needs to state to win that debate.

More scary is the fact that chief propagandist Robert Gibbs will be out there this afternoon explaining that it would have been 70,000 jobs lost if it were not for the brilliant actions of the filthy lying coward in the White House.

I can deal with the jobs created lies but it really irks me that this administration doesn’t equate those numbers to real people. It is a deafness which, I sense, most Americans have begin to recognize.

One has to wonder if Harry, “the war is lost” Reid even has a clue how many Iraqis will celebrate the right to vote (again) in a nation that just a few years ago lived in tyranny……

…….or, how many will truly celebrate when Harry joins the ranks of the unemployed.

15 million Americans are having a grand old time.

If I were a Dem running in the November elections, the best spin I could do with this is to point out that thanks to Dems and President Obama 15 million Americans got the opportunity to spend quality time with their families. Time that wasn’t available during the Bush years.

highhopes on March 5, 2010 at 11:10 AM

Well that’s all they can do. They have 2 cards they know how to play: “Blame Bush” and “things would be worse if not for Porkulus”. Both are tired and unconvincing, but what’s the alternative? I remember during the Bush years that all economic data was spun in the worst light possible. I wasn’t interested in politics at the time, I didn’t even own a computer, but I was always able to find a job somewhere. Construction and manual labor mostly, but it put food in my stomach and kept my bills paid.

If I had listened to the economic news coming out of the boob-tube I would have probably despaired.

These days you have to actively search for bad news on the economy. I tend to believe that the media wouldn’t even report these statistics if they could get away with it.
