ObamaCare: the Democratic manhood contest?

posted at 10:12 am on March 5, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Normally, when party leaders need to whip recalcitrant members to get on board a controversial bill, they apply sweeteners and threats in the needed proportion to gain the votes they need.  Unfortunately for Nancy Pelosi, she can’t allow changes to the Senate version of the ObamaCare bill, so she can’t offer Cornhusker Kickbacks like Harry Reid did to get a floor-vote victory.  Democrats will instead get a solid dose of arm-twisting, and Byron York gives readers some insight into what fence-sitters in Pelosi’s caucus will experience:

I called a Democratic strategist with a question: Say I’m a moderate Democrat. I voted for the House bill last November, but I’ve seen the polls, I know a majority in my district opposes the bill, and I feel certain that voting for final passage will end my time in office. Why should I vote yes?

“Look, you voted for it before,” said the strategist, who asked to remain anonymous. “You should have thought about that then. You’re stuck with the vote, it’s around your neck, you’re going to wear it like an albatross. The ad that’s going to run against you is going to be the same whether you vote for it now or not.

“The Republicans are going to be able to frame what you did their way, and you’re going to need to be able to frame it a different way, to say that you fought to make health insurance more affordable and insurance companies more accountable.

“And if you’re a bedwetting crybaby, you should just go home right now.”

If you get the idea that, in private at least, Democrats are going to make this vote a serious test of manhood, you’re right.

“You big weenie, you know what I’d like to say to you?” the strategist continued. “You sit there and you’re willing to go send an 18-year-old to go fight for his country, knowing he might die, and here you are unwilling to take a tough vote on an issue that you promised your constituents and you voted for once before? You don’t deserve to be here!”

If you get the idea that, in private at least, Democrats have lost their minds, you’re right.  The problem isn’t that the House members holding out on ObamaCare are doing so because they’re looking for a Cornhusker Kickback.  For most of them, it conflicts with their principles, especially on abortion.  In fact, that kind of argument could work better in convincing progressives to vote no than on pro-life moderates to vote yes.

Besides, it’s a bit difficult to cajole Democrats into bravely falling on their swords for their President when the President himself has hardly shown any leadership at all on the issue.  The Hill asked contributors whether it’s time for Obama to start sounding like a President rather than a law professor stuck on the wrong campus:

Bernie Quigley, Pundits Blog contributor, said:

Is Obama weak? By no means. He has strengths and he is as smart as Romney or Bill Clinton. But he may not be cut out for the task at hand. As others have said, he is more a law professor. …

Glenn Reynolds, Instapundit blogger, said:

Yes, Obama is weak. When he brought in Rahm Emanuel, I hoped that it was to have someone tough to resist the impulses of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. But when it comes to congressional pork, Obama has been enabler-in-chief. Though he blusters and bullies from time to time, when push comes to shove he is not acting, but acted upon. Turning over leadership to the worst Congress in my lifetime is likely to prove a disastrous mistake for His Presidency, even if — as seems unlikely — he somehow manages to sneak this healthcare bill through. …

Peter Navarro, professor of Economics and Public Policy at U.C. Irvine, said:

The first big mistake Obama made in his presidency was to turn over the fiscal stimulus to Reid/Pelosi. They botched it. His second big mistake is to ASSERTIVELY and Quixotically pursue health “reform” in the face of sure political catastrophe in November.

One dissenter, Joe Madison of the Black Eagle radio show, attempts a defense by criticizing George Bush:

President Obama is thoughtful, intelligent and insightful. These are traits of a strong president, not a weak one. He cannot be led around by the nose and the smell of public opinion. We forget that during Bush’s two terms in office, most Americans questioned who was running government, the president or the vice president.

Thankfully, no one thinks that Joe Biden is in charge, but most people already know that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have run the agenda for more than a year.  Obama tried to take charge this week on health care by offering his own smaller plan to provide a fresh start.  Remember when the White House promised that?  Instead, Obama fell in line with Pelosi and Reid by backing reconciliation on the long-existing versions that have become electoral poison to Democrats.

Another indication that Obama has all but abdicated leadership was his pathetic plea to Congressional Democrats to save his presidency, as Slublog notes in the Green Room:

President Obama’s message to progressives who are dissatisfied with the Senate health care bill is two fold: First: Don’t forget about the uninsured. Second: Don’t forget what failure to pass this bill would do to the party and my presidency…

…Obama reminded the assembled Democrats that doing nothing would be politically disastrous. “To maintain a strong presidency we need to pass this bill,” the President said, according to Grijalva.

So, despite the haranguing of Democratic strategists, it’s not about courage or fatalism.  Heck, it’s not even about health care.  It’s about rescuing Obama from the debacle in which he’s been led by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.  If this is “a serious test of manhood,” then Obama’s failing it.

That sounds like a very good reason to vote against this bill now, instead of going along with the Obama disaster.

Demonrats being bullied by their leadership into commiting political suicide? Don’t they realize that there is 400,000,000,000 left in the stimulus that will be pumped into the economy prior to the election to make the lemmings think everything is wonderful and they were right all along until after the first of the year. And why would they? They crammed down the car bailout just the week before, and that one was pretty hard to swallow.

Pelosi/Reid are the absolute worst two things that have happened to our country. Obama places third. What’s really sad is that few Americans have any reason to trust our government to do the right thing. Few elderly Americans can have hope for their future under this administration. The youth of this country already have a terrible burden to bear once they do become employed, and these people aren’t even finished with their agenda!

We did NOT need the stimulus. It achieved absolutely none of it’s stated goals, in fact it was off by an order of magnitutde in it’s predictions. All it managed to accomplish was rescue bloated states budgets that rightly should have been cut, and pushed those cuts into the next year.

Heck, there is still half of the emergency bill funds laying around for bribe purposes for this election cycle. Half of the money was never even obligated. How the heck did that “fix” the economy? I don’t buy the “well if we didn’t pass it, it would be much worse” argument. I argue that it might be better right now if it was never passed.

As Governor McDonnell pointed out, education is about the only place that hasn’t been cut to the bone already.

The scare tactics being used by the Virgina Education Association are despicable. I dare say that you could fire one in three “administrators” in every district throughout the commonwealth and realize all the savings necessary with an additional surplus to boot and zero impact on the children. But, of course, that would mean highly-paid unionized bureaucrats would be out on the street and the labor union couldn’t have that.

I agree with the criticism that this “crisis” of confidence goes back to the stimulus bill.

Everyone I knew, anyway, knew exactly what that bill was and wasn’t. The incredible speeches Obama gave about how this was building America’s infrastructure struck nearly everyone I knew as incredibly disingenuous.

It was his downfall. Not that HC bill. That actually makes sense.

It was the stimulus bill that undid his administration, and he’s not going to recover.

Why?

He BS’d. And did so without even looking different from when he might have been telling the truth.

That means: No trust.

That means: Loss of confidence.

Also tell him if he helps pass it losing his seat won’t be the most painful experience, coming home to face his neighbors will be.

Democrat manhood, now that’s funny

No, it’s an oxymoron.

SeniorD on March 5, 2010 at 11:49 AM

Even the Democrats don’t trust HIM. HE’s asking them to jump off the cliff so that he can live. Leadership. Courage. LOL

d1carter on March 5, 2010 at 11:50 AM

Dang, in a test of manhood, I’ll be the President is wishing he picked Silky Pony instead of Biden. At least there’s something to show…

Jim Jones had much the same problem and look how that turned out.

highhopes on March 5, 2010 at 11:58 AM

Help me … have I lost my way here?

Every morning, now, I wake up and I find myself secretly hoping the Democrats will “go for it” – and pass the bill.

There’s a part of me that says – if they fail to do this – they’ll look like idiots but Americans will keep them around because they’re too impotent to cause damage – but can yet be a “balance’” to a resurgent GOP.

On the other hand – what if they actually “go for it”? What if they succeed? A part of me says that Americans will banish them forever – and it could be an end to their party or, at the very least it will chase every single moderate out of it.

Part of me says that if Americans are really, really, really angry – then this is it for the Donkeys. Move the pendulum a little – and it swings a litte. Move it a lot – and it swings a lot.

I hate to see them win one – and I know it’s going to cost a LOT of money – right into the toilet … but I don’t see how they survive if they spoon feed this dog feces to the American Voter.

Pelosi may not be able to buy votes with Obamacare Pork, but she surely can offer pork deals on other legislation for voting for Obamacare.

It’s not magic, just look at what the other hand is doing…

drfredc on March 5, 2010 at 12:01 PM

Don’t forget what failure to pass this bill would do to the party and my presidency…

The situation that Obama finds himself in is of his OWN doing.

Presidents have survived, even thrived, after losing a political battle. Clinton lost his Health Care battle and Bush lost his try at privatizing Social Security. It was a death knell for either man because they knew when they had lost and when to cut their losses.

For Obama – that time was last August – that’s when he lost. That’s when he should have walked away from this.

At this point, he thinks a phyrric victory will save him.

It won’t.

Michelle, with her claws of steel, has already emasculated Obambi–now he can’t even write his name in the snow….

lovingmyUSA on March 5, 2010 at 12:14 PM

but most people already know that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have run the agenda for more than a year.

This is true, but Obama agrees with them.

And not just on the policy issues; he has shown time and again that he likes bully tactics.

So he agrees with them on the methods, too.

Furthermore, he is also quite happy to have them out in front so that he can foist all the blame onto them if anything goes bad. Because he is a dick, not a leader.

I’d guess that the only problem he has with them and any of the things they have been doing is that so far they have been unsuccessful.

Obama a real man? Hardly

As a matter of fact I made a video on Obama’s manhood.

I think Obama should always have the man purse I drew like Clinton had the bra.

HI NO NIKS–11:37 AM. A cute video–but somehow I don’t think it helps. I don’t like Comrade Obama’s (PBUH) actions–but it is better to attack his failed actions and policies–not his manhood.

As far as children brought up by a single female parent–how the kids turn out probably depends more on the toughness, smarts, ethics, morals, and strong religious values of the Mom than on other things.

Remember the old Reagan era joke, “Why doesn’t British PM Margaret Thatcher ever wear short dresses?” The answer was, “So her B**LS won’t show!” A lot of these ladies are tough as hell when it comes to being right.

Wait, wait, wait… wait. By voting yes the first time, it’s an albatross around their necks, and the only thing that will cure it is voting yes a second time?

Sparks are sputtering out from the cognitive dissonance machine.

When did the lunatic left become “most Americans”?

MarkTheGreat on March 5, 2010 at 10:57 AM

Mark, your question is incomplete, should read “when and where”
Answer: Every night, MSNBC

JusDreamin on March 5, 2010 at 12:44 PM

“Look, you voted for it before,” said the strategist, who asked to remain anonymous. “You should have thought about that then. You’re stuck with the vote, it’s around your neck, you’re going to wear it like an albatross. The ad that’s going to run against you is going to be the same whether you vote for it now or not.

Just pull a John Kerry

“I actually did vote for the $87 $870 billion before I voted against it.”

That seemed to work for him…

Americans who rely on the Federal government for basic necessities tend to vote Democrat.

If the Democrats pass this, they lose an election cycle or maybe two…but win the war.

Republicans don’t roll things back once they are put into place.

This “professor Obama” meme is the biggest load of crapola. He was never a professor - he occasionally taught a class. He went through no rigourous and competitive hiring process, he never published in law journals, he wasn’t evaluated for tenure or promotion. It was a part-time gig while he played in the state senate, probably cynically undertaken to create the meme that has overtaken the media now about intellectual, learned and wise he is. In other words, its nothing more than another myth he’s perpetuated to create a false aura about himself.
