New Palin scandal: Leno might have piped in some laughter for her jokes

posted at 5:36 pm on March 5, 2010 by Allahpundit

Can you believe it? Next thing you know, we’ll be told that she doesn’t even write her own lines. Come to think of it, we were already told that. And that was treated as a “scandal” too.

This is the second day in a row that Mediaite’s gone for a goof on Palin and then had to walk it back.

Maybe Sarah Palin wasn’t quite the hit on The Tonight Show the other night that everyone thought she was! A contributor over at Daily Kos — who provides some impressive sound bona fides — says he attended the Leno taping on Monday and that the audience was not nearly as welcoming as it sounded to TV viewers later on that night.

And the inevitable update:

Update: A reader writes “I was there while visiting my sister in CA. He’s wrong, people were laughing and I didn’t notice anything strange. The sign was turned on when we were supposed to applaud and laugh.”

Media outlets are already starting to pick this up. Here’s the dKos piece laying out the shocking allegations about canned laughter at a hammy late-night comedy show that literally cues its audience to clap at the right moments with a giant sign. I’m going to quote at length because I want you to see what qualifies as credible-ish reporting on Palin:

After sitting through the taping of the show in the studio I can recount many portions where there was little or no laughter or response, but at the later broadcast they are smoothed over with applause and laughter that WERE NOT THERE at the taping. Groans, hoots, grumbling, or just dead silence – all missing…

(In the interest of disclosure my wife and I created a parody “Going Rouge: The Sarah Palin Rogue Coloring & Activity Book” http://goingrouge.net and have sold many copies. It was featured in the Washington Post, AP, The New York Times, Buzzflash, Entertainment Tonight broadcast the cover repeatedly pre-Christmas, and in general it’s been happily received. Even right wingers have purchased copies, and loved them.)…

From my seat to the right of the stage, by the band, I could tell that an average of 70% of the audience did not like Sarah Palin. Many literally sat on their hands. This is LA and I wondered when we went in, just how many people would be into Palin here. C’mon, this is LA, man! Make no mistake, the national figure for nutjobs were represented, the same insane 30% of the country that always believe in racism, GWBush, War, Torture, the Libertarians, Teabaggers were there too, and quite vocal. Throw in a shotgun microphone and you’ve got yourself a laugh riot with these guys…

But when Jay brought out Sarah Palin, she was completely nerved. Watch the video, check out her breathing, she’s Freaked and talks a mile a minute. Both my wife and I agreed – when you actually get close enough, she’s just plain Creepy, and those yech vibes filled the room…

And while NBC Sold Palin, she sold her body, jiggling, teasing, pushing the cutesy-pie, what we used to call in the military, a “prick tease”. She short circuits brains, deflects the fact that most of what she says is nonsense or hateful, as lizard layers of right wing men’s brains hum a sexual fantasy tune, and women who have thrown all sense of propriety to the wind, watching her strip, want to be just like her. Rich. Stupid. The sweet “Bite Me” bitch attitude she’s honed to an art form. No, she doesn’t just “wink” – she uses her whole body to sell the package. Turn off the sound, just watch her body language. I find it whorish, repulsive, and I’m no prude.

So there you go. A guy who created an anti-Palin coloring book (not this book, despite the similarity of the name) due in part to the “yech vibes” he gets from Palin’s “whorish” body language saw people literally sitting on their hands in Leno’s audience. Follow the link and read the whole post or else you’ll miss the part where he and his wife are waving copies of their coloring book at her, and not only does she see them but she totally recognizes the book and is pissed ‘n stuff. (“[S]he looked us in the eye. Sarah doesn’t like us much.”) Coming tomorrow at Mediaite: A Firedoglake diarist claims Palin and her daughter Willow carjacked him after the Leno show. Can it be true? Stay tuned.

Oh, by the way: Here’s the shocking. true. story. of what really happened when Palin and her “entourage” descended on that Oscar gift suite. Brace yourself.

jeanie on March 5, 2010 at 5:41 PM

Obviously, if the crowd didn’t lynch Palin, just on principle, out of righteous anger at her evil anti-progressive rhetoric, then obviously Leno had them chained to their seats in order to prevent it. No?

Rule #1 with all allegations Palin:

Rule #1 (corollary) with all allegations Palin:

Whatever is being hurled against Palin is likely true of her attackers.

It’s a sad day when the Onion News parody stories can actually compete with Actual news agencys for facts….and come out ahead.

Nice to see them using such credible sources.

Next: Palin to get blamed for the applause and laughter signs that Tina Fey had on SNL.

LibTired on March 5, 2010 at 5:45 PM

And if you read their twitter comments, as they wrote about in the daily kos post–(we told everyone on twitter she bombed and was horrible and no one laughed!)–was a lie. Their twitter comments only say “if you hear derisive laughter at the wrong time, that was me!”

They seem to be upset that their inappropriate behavior was not on the broadcast. They never wrote she bombed, or that people weren’t responding well to her comments with applause and laughter.

The Palin Derangement Syndrome is strong with this couple to travel 3,000-6,000 miles just to see someone they loathe.

Enoxo on March 5, 2010 at 5:45 PM

One last thing, should this scandal gain any momentum, look for Jay to come forward to throw water on it. Having canned applause does not reflect well upon his new old program.

turfmann on March 5, 2010 at 5:46 PM

“…most of what she says is nonsense or hateful…” projecting much? btw, do these people have names we can reference for later catches?

Yeah there is and worse. I saw a website that had Sarah Palin’s child with photo’s of vegetables asking which was smarter. This was taken down within a week, but it shows there is no bottom for some people.

I have no doubt this story is bullsh*t, but even if it’s true, so what?
So she’s not hilarious–do we need that in our future 45th President?
Not really.
Although I still find her very funny as well as smart as a whip and beautiful.

I’m no Palin fanboy, but what the heck is with the Left? They’re still going after Palin…in the fashion they know best–by making stuff up. And it’s getting worse week by week.

The only thing I can think of is it’s an attempt at “preemptive” mud-throwing, assuming she runs for POTUS.

And the Left wouldn’t be doing this unless she did pose some sort of threat, as the Palinistas are always saying, and are probably right about, given stories like this.

JetBoy on March 5, 2010 at 5:51 PM

Funny. They simply are furious that she did so well.

Seven Percent Solution on March 5, 2010 at 5:52 PM

The left is simply deranged whenever it comes to Governor Palin, and cannot simply be decent or objective.

Take a look at this blog. This lady wrote a previous post about running into Governor Palin, and having a thoroughly enjoyable experience meeting her (even though the writer is a liberal, and is polar opposites of everything Governor Palin is).

Seen in the first link, the writer is somewhat shocked by the liberal vitriol and hate-full response towards her just because she said Governor Palin was pleasant and nice, even though she disagrees with her politics.

Expect the shrill screaming to get louder and more delusional the more appearances she makes that make her seem “normal” and “likable.” The unwritten implication is that she could be a contender in 2012 as things stand now. My wife and I attended two sitcom tapings – the last show of the season for “2 1/2 Men” and the next to the last episode of “The Drew Carey Show” They had comedians warm up the audience, gave instructions on how to laugh (and a lot of encouragement to REALLY yuck it up). They filmed each scene at least twice and had microphones hanging down above the audience. But when we watched the shows, the laughter didn’t sound anything like what we heard at the taping.

The laughter on TV was much more enthusiastic than what I heard from my seat. Maybe adding all of the microphones together makes it seem different.

darwin-t on March 5, 2010 at 6:06 PM

I thought she had packed the audience with Palinistas. It turns out Leno just cranked up the laugh track. Face it people, she is not that popular, with any political group, and not that funny, or that smart. She needs crib notes on her hand, and fake laughter on her jokes.

Forget about the Left. Ask yourself why so many right-wingers have such a low opinion of her. And it ain’t because she is too far right.

Media outlets are already starting to pick this up. Here’s the dKos piece laying out the shocking allegations about canned laughter at a hammy late-night comedy show that literally cues its audience to clap at the right moments with a giant sign.

I don’t know if it’s still like this, but, in 1999-2003 while I was in NY for college, I went to multiple tapings of the Daily Show.

At the time, they also had an applause sign.

I think it’s fairly standard for comedy/interview shows. It certainly doesn’t force the audience to laugh. And, it doesn’t stop them from laughing when something else strikes their fancy. However, it does give the audience an indication of when the producers definitely want to have laughter.

JadeNYU on March 5, 2010 at 6:09 PM

I used to scroll through Kos semi-daily or so just to see what they were up to. There is a huge difference in that site and here in the tone.

Yes, we make fun of the opposition, give them cutesy names (Silky Pony, for example), and have funny pictures caught at the wrong moment. But overall, Hot Air does not personally go after members of the opposition like they do. Post after post, the same hateful, vile, name-calling (in a nasty way), and flat out lying over and over again. Got to where I couldn’t even scroll through it to see the topics. You think the regular stories there are nasty, you should read through some comments. Regularly the sort of stuff that even Ace would ban for with little or no notice.

Has anyone actually checked to see if The One isn’t injecting applause tracks into his appearances?

And what about Pelosi’s piped-in facial silicone?

They just aren’t showing up if they are more then one line.

And while NBC Sold OBAMA, HE sold HIS body, jiggling, teasing, pushing the cutesy-pie, what we used to call in the military, a “flykiller”. HE short circuits brains, deflects the fact that most of what HE says is nonsense or hateful, as lizard layers of LEFT wing WOmen’s brains hum a sexual fantasy tune, and MEN who have thrown all sense of propriety to the wind, watching HIM strip, want to be just like HIM. Rich. Stupid. The sweet “I WON” attitude HE’s honed to an art form. No, HE doesn’t just “wink” – HE uses HIS whole body to sell the package. Turn off the sound, just watch HIS body language. I find it whorish, repulsive, and I’m no prude.

Quite sexist isnt it?

I thought she had packed the audience with Palinistas.

Weird…I’ve had comments take a minute or so to show up sometimes, delayed for some reason…see if yours are showing up

Applause signs in a studio are nothing new. Hell, SNL hasn’t been able to survive without them lately since the show hasn’t been funny in 10 years.

But having watched countless Palin appearances on TV and attended the Perry/Palin rally here last month, trust me when I tell you the woman doesn’t need any assistance from the editing crew when it comes to working a crowd.

Are you trying to quote the banned words from the article?

Also try to clear your browser cache as I ran into a problem once with that.
