CSM: Was the Truther Democrat who shot those cops at the Pentagon a “right-wing extremist”?
posted at 4:19 pm on March 5, 2010 by Allahpundit
Anyone who’s listened to Rush Limbaugh’s daily stream of hateful Democratic Truther talking points knows the answer.
John Patrick Bedell, whom authorities identified as the gunman in the Pentagon shooting on Thursday, appears to have been a right-wing extremist with virulent antigovernment feelings…
Details of Mr. Bedell’s case are still emerging. But writings by someone with his same name and birth date, posted on the Internet, express ill will toward the government and the armed forces and question whether Washington itself might have been behind the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
However, law enforcement officials have yet to publicly state their theories as to Bedell’s motives…
According to the Associated Press, an Internet posting made by someone using the name JpatrickBedell expressed a determination to see justice served in the case of Marine Col. James Sabow, who was found dead in his California home in 1991. Authorities have ruled this case a suicide, but it has become a cause célèbre among extremists who consider that ruling a coverup by the government.
No mention in the story of Bedell’s Bush-hatred or his party affiliation. It fell to the boss emeritus to dig that up, not for the purpose of indicting Democrats for what he did but to try to preempt the inevitable tedious attempts to lay this at the feet of conservatives. I don’t think she has much to worry about this time. It’s simply too far a logical leap to blame the military-loving mainstream right for an attack on the Pentagon, which explains why even noted “wingnut” critics like John Avlon and Sullivan staffer Patrick Appel are taking a pass on this one. If there’s any silver lining in the very dark clouds created by Bedell and Joe Stack (and even the Kentucky census worker fiasco), it may be that partisans on both sides have necessarily become more cautious about trying to divine coherent motives from incoherent minds. Not all partisans, natch, but some.
Your exit question: Is it possible to be a “left-wing extremist” anymore or do nuts who embrace some lefty ideas before launching an attack automatically fall under the broader heading of “anti-government,” a term that’s conveniently also used to describe conservatives’ opposition to statism? That’s why CSM ended up labeling him a right-winger, I suspect. Righties want a smaller federal government and Bedell hated the military and the military’s part of the federal government. Voila!

That was last night’s meme…
The going meme right now seems to be that “Right wing talk show hosts are inciting such divisiveness that mentally unstable men, like this poor ill man who was a 9/11 truther are pushed over the edge.”
And besides… everyone knows that 9/11 truthers are anti-government and, ergo, right wingers… /s

Walk it back. This is another example of the left attempting to frame the argument to thier liking. If they can set the conditions on the battlefield, they can control the battle. Nevermind that they completely discount differences between anarcist anti-government, pro-communist anti-constitutional government, anti-american anti-government, or pro-constututionaly restricted anti-big government. If the media buys the broad-brush anti-government smear as applied universaly to the political right, they can box the right in with it.
Do I expect the MSM to push the meme? Nah.

This has been going on since Oswald with these commies. Reading that “48 liberal lies” book and the good professor writes that the last thing kids read in their text books was that Oswald was a Communist left wing extremist. “That’s why CSM ended up labeling him a right-winger, I suspect.”
…….funny you should ask!
I had a Lefty at work explain it to me today!
He said that even though the Pentagon shooter was a Registered Democrat, Anti-Bush, Anti-Government, 9/11 Truther and a Pot-smoker, that fact that he entered a Government Bldg and used a gun, automatically makes him a “Right-wing” extremist!
Despite all the other stuff!
After trying to wrap my head around that completely insane argument, I asked the proud Lefty what about the University shooter from last month!
Since he couldn’t even attempt to spin her as a “Right-wing” extremist, he just concluded with “she’s a disturbed individual”, and walked away!
Lefty’s, are frankly, delusional and I think, serioulsy suffer from some sort of mass-projected Brain Damage!
Dale in Atlanta on March 5, 2010 at 4:39 PM
The phrase “Left Wing” has a meaning, refering to a spectrum of fundamentally statist beliefs ranging from welfare statism to full-blown Communism. “Right Wing,” however, has none, save that it includes all those ideas and/or individuals that have lost, or never enjoyed, the favor of the left. Libertarians? Right wing. Socialist third-world military juntas? Right wing. The National Socialist German Workers Party? Right wing. Today, two murders is all that’s required to transform one from a faithful “Progressive” one day to a “Right Wing Extremist” the next.
Blacklake on March 5, 2010 at 4:41 PM
“Right-wing extremist” used to mean nothing or more less than pro-life. Something strikes as odd that a pro-life person would go on a shooting rampage.

terryannonline on March 5, 2010 at 4:46 PM
Yes because lefties are gun-lovers who hate the government.
And I don’t understand how trutherism is even considered a leftist trait. There are plenty of right-wing truthers, see:Jerome Corsi, paulnuts etc….if anything trutherism plays right into the right wing’s hyper-paranoia about government action. Same with Bush-hatred…there’s a serious strain of Bush-bashing in the Tea Party movement, and on this website itself.
In contrast, aren’t us lefties supposed to be the “statist-sheep”? So why would we question and/or hate the big government we worship?
Maybe…just maybe…they’re right wing nuts! By god, that would explain it!

Hawthorne on March 5, 2010 at 4:46 PM
Frustration that The One and a fillibuster-proof congress couldn’t deliver the fantasized Utopia. The fundamental belief of the left is that the natural state of man is one of inate equity and happiness, and that if there is a source of discomfort in the world, it’s not a natural condition but somebody’s fault. The correct role of the government, then, is to seize control of the situation and keep those preventing happiness from having their (evil) way. Unfortunately, now that the Enlightened have control of the government, discomfort is not only continuing, but in many ways increasing. That’s resulting in some fundamental cognitive dissonance.

But if we’re really so anxious to connect politicians to extremism, here’s one for you:
Wow–that sounds like he was urging al-Qaeda to assassinate a federal employee! Why, you’d almost think Delahunt were a right-winger!
Ironically, his DA career began by covering for the left-wing nutcase killer Amy Bishop as a political favor. By leaving her free to kill again, she has now ended his career. Karma, dogma.
Noel on March 5, 2010 at 4:54 PM
Anything that causes him to fall into disfavor with the left would make him a “right winger.” Libertarians, monarchists, or anybody who pursues the implentation of full-blown socialism via any prescription other than that in favor with The Left at the moment falls under the vacuous verbal umbrella of “right wing.”
Blacklake on March 5, 2010 at 4:54 PM
crr6,
If there is any common thread among pretty much all of the right wing factions, it is a respect for the military. We might not trust our civilian government, but the military is honored and respected for the role they play and the sacrifices they have made. No right wing nutjob would attack the military. They would attack the civilian government.

Honey, a little advice:
Put down the Chunky Monkey; Ben & Jerry’s donations to Saving The __________ , are no way to rationalize your ever-increasing, Gaia-destroying girth.
Lose the Garafalo-Glasses; they don’t make you look one IQ point more intelligent, or serious, or authentic, or don’t give a damn about the patriarchy… they make you look like Garafalo, and that ain’t good.
Socks and Birkenstocks; yeah, nothing quite screams “I know I’m not sexually desirable!” like this combo, for women or men.
And yes, you really do need to shave them. And there. And there, too.

Conservatives are not anti-government. We just don’t want government deciding what kind of light bulb we can buy or what kind of car is socially acceptable. We don’t want the government to tax individual products (sugar, tans-fats…) or industries because the left deams them evil. We also feel the government should enforce some current laws they already have on the books (deporting illegal imigrants when the law states it)

The Left-Right political spectrum is filled with problems.
Being on the “right” doesn’t make you anti-statist or anti-government. You can be for very, very big government, like a fascist, for instance, and be on the “right.” You can also be a monarchist, and be on the “right.”
The current Tea Party, AFAIK, embraces a mainly anti-statist approach, wishing to have government be less intrusive and destructive to wealth creation.
This Truther that opened fire at the Pentagon was certainly not part of the Tea Party Movement, nor was he on the “right” in any significant way. Seems to be more of an anarchist/pot-head type. Although, he was an “anti-government” Democrat.
Labels are tricky, and this Left vs. Right spectrum doesn’t really make things any clearer in contemporary politics.

This is what I had written in the headline threads on Bedell:
Well, clearly this guy was on the right, in terms of his philosophy of governance (limited government, private property, sound currency – going by one of his internet postings) but the motivating factor for his act was 9/11 trutherism, which finds no acceptance among any but the most extreme of the right – which is a tiny number. He might have gone to Tea Parties, but if he pulled his truther crap, he would have been shunned and driven away. The only place truthers find widespread, and mainstream, acceptance (and encouragement) is among the left, and even mainstream dems. He was far more likely to be seen being open and vocal about his anti-military, truther stance at a dem rally or an anti-war rally than anything else. In this pathology, he was clearly with the left – or even just the mainstream dems.
—————————————–
Trutherism has a tiny following among the extreme right, but they can only publicly express these ideas and find acceptance and public support among the left, and they find it among the mainstream left (Michael Moore, Matt Damon, …). Trutherism is a creature of the left, and a creature of the mainstream of the democrats.
