White House bars media from event, puts out own video instead

posted at 9:36 pm on March 4, 2010 by Allahpundit

I could have sworn that they pulled something like this before and that we blogged it at the time, but an archives search turns up empty, alas. Team Barry assuredly has barred the press from some White House events — including events dedicated to … the press — but posting their own homemade media coverage may be a new step. Any theories on why The One might not have wanted to deal with reporters’ questions today? Hmmmm:

Freezing out TV cameras and reporters ensures that Obama won’t be asked nettlesome questions–say, about the very delicate state of health care reform on Capitol Hill. (The major networks have a generally-observed policy of not permitting their cameras into an event without a reporter or producer present who can choose to ask a question if he or she sees fit.)

Sometimes allowing a White House camera to capture an event gives the public a window on moments that the press didn’t see, but it also gives the White House great latitude to manipulate the president’s images and words as his aides see fit. One other note: White Houses have used military personnel to take official videos of events for decades, but such images were rarely, if ever, released in real time. The Obama White House has a staff videographer who came over from the campaign and produces material for use on the White House website.

Tony Fratto, Dubya’s former deputy press secretary, claims that the news networks refused to air this footage tonight lest it compromise their integrity. As amusing as we may find the idea of major media balking at coverage that’s too slanted towards The One, can anyone confirm that? Anyone seen bits or pieces of this footage on the tube tonight? The bill was the “Travel Promotion Act,” so it’s not like Brian Williams was going to bump ObamaCare coverage for it anyway.

Update: No wonder I had deja vu — they have indeed done this before.

I’d be OK with never seeing this guy on TV ever again.

Besides, nothing he says means a damn thing anyway, he just changes it later if he feels like it and then claims that he didn’t say what we all knew he said.

At least it was bipartisan.

I do seem to remember them barring press from taking photos and released their own of some WH event but I can’t remember the specifics.

Are we thinking of when the White House wouldn’t let Fox be part of a live feed for something and the rest of the press then pitched a fit in support of Fox?

I may be wrong but didn’t they ban the press when The One was shooting hoops w/college stars? Or something along that line

Aw, Barry signed the bill with four different pens so they’d be “authentic.” So thoughtful.

Watch it without the volume. Painful. There is a lot of tension in the room. Does Obama ever look at the camera?

conservative pilgrim on March 4, 2010 at 9:46 PM

they are afraid someone might ask him about his earlier opposition to reconciliation.
Just a thought:
Are you thinking about the white house barring the media from a conference on transparency and ethics, that was a couple weeks ago.

rob verdi on March 4, 2010 at 9:46 PM

So the White House is cutting out the middle man and just releasing the Propaganda to the masses themselves.

uknowmorethanme on March 4, 2010 at 9:46 PM

This is after only a year. Even Hitler’s breakdown didn’t take place this quickly – and he was under a lot more pressure.

It won’t be long at all before Obama goes from figuratively barricading himself inside the White House to to doing it literally.

Who cares. It’s nothing more than a backdrop for a talking head reading the White House Press release.

How is it any different if the networks have their own cameras? They are still reading the White House Press release and pretending it’s news, or they are just repeating what some White House press aide whispered into their ear.

Tapper Thumper: Is Obama ‘Preventing Actual Reporters’ From Covering White House?
By Warner Todd Huston | Sat, 05/23/2009 – 06:35

On May 20, ABC’s Jake Tapper asked a few salient questions about coverage of an April 27 incident at the White House basketball court, a sort of event after the event that the White House press corps was barred from covering. Tapper wondered then why the president barred the press but it later became clear that Team Obama was creating its own little media report “complete with cuts, interviews, and chyrons identifying who’s speaking.”

Tapper subtly warned that the president’s penchant for controlling the message smacks of an Obama Ministry of Propaganda styled effort that excludes “actual reporters” from covering the White House and leaves the country with faux news that is free of any “uncomfortable questions” asked by probing journalists.

jukin on March 4, 2010 at 10:52 PM

Obama’s staff has very cleverly learned how to effectively use diversionary tactics when they want to redirect the media’s focus away from a potentially sizzling hot issue:

The video posted on the White House website runs less than two minutes and contains banter between Obama and the bipartisan Congressional group which pressed for the Travel Promotion Act, a bill that sets up a new entity and fee mechanism to encourage foreigners to come to the U.S.

The diversion? Lock out the media, especially the White House Press Corps.

The real issue which could have become a hot item for criticism that they wanted to avoid becoming the focus for the MSM, and especially conservative bloggers? The Travel Promotion Act, which was not published in advance for the American voting public to read before Congress voted on it, and which, by signing it into law, creates a new government agency which will require funding and a new layer of bureaucracy which will need taxpayer funded federal employees to man.

On top of that, the bonus is a bit of payback to the WHPC for all the grief they’ve been giving Gibbsy lately. During Republican WH administrations such as Reagan’s and Bush’s, the WHPC became something of an elite media guard, with all the airs and attitudes that often accompanies such select groups of people. Obama has essentially telegraphed a message to them that they’re no better than the beat reporter on the street.

So what’s the rule going to be when material shot by this “videographer brought over from the campaign” starts showing up in Obama 2012 campaign materials?

Jason Coleman on March 5, 2010 at 7:18 AM

You know, when I was in J-school, they proffesors in several of my courses used to make a big deal out of this – when Bush did it.
The Bush Admin. used to do pre-packaged videos as press releases and would release them to the press at times. The professors and some journalists would whine that “hey, this isn’t news. This is propaganda.” Of course, they were right. But that was then, when Hitler was in charge.

They’re likely teaching the same classes now that this is what the government is supposed to be doing, and sometimes the information fed to the press directly from their favorite cronies in government is of great value and more factually accurate than, say, Fox News.

Funny.
