Shooting at Pentagon: Two cops injured; Update: Suspect identified
posted at 8:29 pm on March 4, 2010 by Allahpundit
Lots of e-mails flowing in about this, although details are sketchy. Two officers down, the suspect in custody, the Pentagon on lockdown, and little else:
The shooting occurred at the Pentagon Metro Station, which is just outside the Pentagon’s main entrance. The shots were fired at about 6:35 p.m. ET.
The officers belonged to the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, the Defense Department said in a statement. One was apparently hit in the lower part of the body, according to reporters there. He appeared to be alert when he was loaded into an ambulance.
The good news, per Major Garrett, is that the injuries aren’t life-threatening. A Pentagon official tells NBC that the shooting appears to be “random” and not some sort of terrorist attack, but they said that initially about Joe Stack’s missile into the Austin IRS office too. Stand by for updates regarding motive; “teabaggers” aren’t typically associated with antipathy to the military, but don’t underestimate the conclusion-drawing power of Frank Rich when he’s crashing on deadline.
Update: The shooter’s name: John Patrick Bedell.
The man was calm as he approached the officers at the main entrance around 6:40 p.m., Pentagon Police Chief Richard Keevil said at a news conference. The officers asked to see his pass to enter the building; he started shooting without saying a word.
“He reached into his pocket and they assumed he was going to get out his pass and he just started shooting,” Keevil said. The officers were only “grazed” and immediately fired back.
The cops were grazed but a Fox source says Bedell was shot in the head.

The two officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, but the suspect is worse off.

Also, if it happened down in the Metro Station (full public access), “at the Pentagon” is a little misleading.

I find myself in the unlikely position of agreeing with you wholeheartedly; that was my first thought when I realized no civilians were hurt besides the sadsack who did this.
Those cops must have been extraordinarily well-trained — to have returned fire while wounded and not have “collateral damage”. My understanding is that two police were shot and three returned fire.
To the Pentagon Police officers: Well done and get well. soon.

The Pentagon Metro Station is not underneath the Pentagon building. It is below what used to be the bus terminal just outside the building. The bus terminal was moved away from the Pentagon by 300 feet in 2001. The long escalator which used to connect the Metro station to the second floor of the Pentagon was also removed in 2001. There is no longer a direct connection between the station and the interior of the Pentagon.

2nd person scrutinized in Pentagon subway shooting
By DEVLIN BARRETT and MATT APUZZO
Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) – Law enforcement officials say they’ve got one person in custody and are investigating whether a second was involved in a shooting at Pentagon subway entrance
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still unfolding.
They say there’s no immediate signs of terrorism but, with information coming in quickly, they haven’t ruled anything out.
Two police officers were shot and critically wounded in the shooting.

If this is accurate, the Metro reference is misleading, this is the security checkpoint (for Pentagon badge) one goes through before they ever get near the building. The Pentagon Police would be somewhat suspicious because NOBODY and I mean NOBODY “is looking” for their badge as they queue up here.
Glad that the good guys were not killed and the shooter has life threatening injuries.

So crazy! My brother was there at the time. He was trying to change from the metro to a bus at Pentagon but there were announcements over the loudspeakers advising people that due to “police activity” they should stay on the metro platform underground but that they were free to go up “at their own risk”. He ended up just getting back on the next train and catching a bus from the next station. How crazy. I’m glad that it sounds like the officers are going to be alright.

From California, and dead.
Years ago a nut case trying to get into the Pentagon was shot and killed. I remember at the time being surprised at how good the Pentagon police shooting was. This was just after some random shooting in a Pentagon parking lot slug line left a Pentagon worker.
Glad to know that both policemen will recover, and that they are still good shots.

unclesmrgol on March 5, 2010 at 9:08 AM
I agree with almost everything you relay here, but I want to clarify something.
Once you pass through the exit lanes of the Pentagon Metro, you have only 2 options, take the escalator left or the escalator right. One escalator dumps you at the Pentagon’s Metro entrance, which allows DoD employees, but also serves as the only entrance for business visitors and tours. The other escalator dumps you at its exit, which mainly serves for those exiting the metro to transfer to a bus. Either can take you to the bus terminal, which is technically over the Metro line.
It’s important to note that the bus terminal is almost directly over the metro line, and that the escalators servicing the ground level and hence the Pentagon are actually much closer to the Pentagon itself than either the bus terminal or the station.
This sounds as if the shooting began in the Metro and may have moved closer to the Pentagon entrance than originally reported. Otherwise, why allow bystanders to remain on the platform of the station?
PFPA does patrol the metro station, but I thought they patrolled past the exit and up to the entrances. They may in fact patrol the platform itself, but I thought jurisdiction of the platform was Metro Police.
AP, I’d like to see you update this story. I just heard on FNC that the shooter may be one and the same as some anarchist Truther who hated the military. They reported the FBI was looking into this to verify he is one and the same.
Now I don’t expect the drive-bys to highlight this, but I think after that little “teabagger” comment, it would behoove you to do so.
I’d also like to see you (or anyone on the “Right”) focus on the fact that this t()rd was violated MULTIPLE gun laws and discuss the following regarding his actions:
1. He drove across state lines, breaking G-d knows how many state and Federal laws, as well as the law banning handguns on the metro. Weapons (including 2-in knives and box-cutters) are also banned on Federal property, including those by law-abiding conceal carry holders. He broke that law too, based on the fact the shooting appears to have crossed up the escalators and into PFPA territory. He also broke Virginia laws, which do not require a permit for open carry, but ABSOLUTELY requires one for conceal carry (which he was).
2. He was NOT armed with ‘assault rifles’ or any Black Scary Rifle. This is such a STUPID term anyway, coined in the ’90s during the ‘Assault Weapons Ban’ (which banned based on the look of the weapon, not its destructive power). ARs, which are .223 caliber, are more varmint than deer rifles, which is why I think this is a ridiculous term.
3. Even the most lenient states (like Virginia) require you to be a resident of that state in order to purchase a firearm, so he most likely purchased his weapons in the great ‘gun-control’ state of California. This means he had no criminal record and no mental issues. If he did, he had to have purchased these handguns illegally. NO state allows for convicted felons or those with psychological problems to purchase firearms, and vendors in all states MUST conduct background checks on each person attempting to purchase firearms or they lose their license.
4. He may or may not have purchased his ammunition in California. If he did, he most likely had similar hurdles as one does in Massachusetts when buying ammo. In Mass, for example, one needs a permit issued by the state before one can purchase ammo, let alone weapons. If California is just as stringent as Mass, then fat lot of good those laws did in preventing this act.
It would be nice if someone actually understood weapons, the laws applicable to the sale, transportation, and use of firearms. I am SICK AND TIRED of all the bullsh!t the gun-control freaks throw out after such incidents, and nobody seems to know how to respond to their cries for more frickin’ laws. How many more laws to we need??? How many more laws, beyond the ones I know of, did he violate? How are those laws workin’ for ya????
Another point: After that Chicago teenager died from blunt force trauma resulting from beatings with 2x4s, where was the outcry to ban lumber? To register pieces of lumber purchased? To require permits to buy and carry lumber? I mean, for G-d’s sake, this is our Second Amendment Right that ‘shall not be infringed’ – are we fine with infringing on any other rights enumerated in the Constitution? If not, then why the 2nd?
We should be ready to accept infringement of all if we allow infringement on one, and we deserve such if we do.
Miss_Anthrope on March 5, 2010 at 9:35 AM
Where guns are legal, plenty of criminals will have guns.
unclesmrgol on March 5, 2010 at 9:46 AM
Here are some of the California gun laws…granted, these may have changed. These apply to handguns only:
California law requires a gun purchaser must submit a CADL or CAID and thumbprint in order to purchase a firearm.
All sales, including private, must go through a licensed firearm dealer.
Police record all firearm purchases.
CADOJ conducts background checks on all firearms purchasers.
Anyone moving into the state has 60 days to register their firearms.
There is a 10-day waiting period on all firearms purchases.
Possession of the firearm must take place within 30 days or the entire process must be repeated.
All persons must have an approved safety device to purchase a firearm from a dealer.
It is unlawful for any of the following persons to posses any firearm, including long arms:
1. convicted felon
2. drug addict
3. persons with psychological problems
4. persons convicted of certain violent misdemeanors (within 10 years of conviction)
5. juvenile offenders (until age 30)
6. minors (unless have written permission by guardian or supervisor)
7. minors under age 16 (unless accompanied by guardian or supervisor)
Miss_Anthrope on March 5, 2010 at 10:02 AM
And so will law-abiding citizens, who can protect themselves.
Where guns are ILLEGAL, only criminals will have guns.
So, what is your point???
Miss_Anthrope on March 5, 2010 at 10:03 AM
No, the government will have guns, too.

Bedell died, and the police are recuperating well at home.
Link to Patterico to follow what Ace noted.
The amazon identity links Bedell to Austin, but the media reports he’s from Orange County, CA.
Bedell used violence to petition his grievances in such a way that he knew he would be shot dead.
But I do not believe that reading literature and listening to a “guts is enough” radio host is what sent Bedell into criminal insanity; he was an unstable personality pot smoker protesting government control of substances and focusing upon life’s interpretation through an irrational response to research. Even those elements combined don’t send a rational person on a violent spree without someone in his personal life knowing what is happening, whether egging on the outburst by acknowledgment or by disagreement fueling the outrage. Bedell lived with his mother; so will she be prosecuted by the officers shot–replicating the convolution in Austin’s plane crash?
Who could Bedell have approached to bring him calmly back from violent insanity? It isn’t as if his insanity is due to his research, or that the literature he viewed is to blame for his crime. Rather, what Bedell made of his research, his choice of conclusions, and how he chose to enforce his own measure through his active participation in the taking of life (his own while threatening others) expressed criminal insanity.
Since the comparison was made in this thread’s article, consider a contrast between the IRS plaguing a non-compliant businessman, and the military that had no personal connection with Bedell. Bedell was not drafted nor enlisted in the military that he chose to target. The media account today is not suitable evidence in a court of law, relaying that Bedell supposedly wrote a message that a Marine’s death would explain Bedell’s Pentagon “attack”. Furthermore, the IRS violence in Austin could have been circumvented had the man with tax problems approached Tax Masters for defensive advice handling his financial affairs. “Don’t go to the IRS by yourself” makes a good ad. But exactly what legitimate business advertises to defend those who attack the United States Government and Military (besides AG Holder’s law firm). What business advertises to protect you from the government prior to your personal acts of criminal violence that would qualify a citizen as an enemy of the state? Mental Hospitals known to abuse patients.
This audacious episode did not help anyone except the Statists. So idiots presuming to “fight” abusive and unconstitutional authoritarianism in this criminally insane manner play into the hands of their tormentor as the very tools to augment authoritarianism.
Apologists for the Left and mortified Republicans alike should refrain from smearing legitimate Constitutional issues and those who support the Constitution simply because of Bedell. If someone reads the Constitution and other literature and then commits violent crime, it wasn’t the Constitution, economic studies or the intriguing Bush family history that made Bedell shoot police guarding the Pentagon. After all, was Salinger to blame for John Lennon’s murder?
First it was the “Miss Me Yet” Bush billboards. Yesterday, the abusive Republican Party PowerPoint exposition. Now (Patterico) the condemnation of anti-Bush literature for causing/marking insanity. Consider the sources and research the opposition before reaching educated opinions aka conclusions.
BTW, no one at HotAir has ever explicated the Misus Institute.
