Senate candidate faces bank seizure
posted at 12:00 pm on March 4, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
In 2004, the Republican nominee for the open Illinois Senate seat, Jack Ryan, had to withdraw after having his divorce records exposed over the summer, revealing some rather exotic lifestyle choices. That left the Illinois GOP with only Alan Keyes in a carpetbagging bid to beat a junior state Senator making his second run at Capitol Hill for the Democrats … and we all know how that turned out for Illinois, and the nation. Now the shoe may be on the other foot, as the Democratic nominee admits that the feds may have to seize his family bank due to bad business decisions (via Big Gov’t):
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias sought to blunt a potentially damaging political issue today about questions regarding his involvement in his family’s struggling bank, which he said he expects will likely fail in the coming months.
But questions were still left unanswered following a more than 70-minute meeting with the Chicago Tribune’s editorial board. Among them were exactly what Giannoulias knew about convicted bookmaker Michael Giorango’s criminal past when he received loans from Broadway Bank, and how many of the bank’s troubled loans were made while Giannoulias was working there.
Giannoulias also sought to explain nearly $70 million the bank paid out in dividends to him and his family in recent years, saying $29 million of that was taken out of the bank to diversify the family’s investments.
That $70 million would have come in handy now:
He said he would be willing to help the bank but also estimated that any money he could provide would be “under $1 million.” The bank must raise $85 million by April, according to a consent order with state and federal regulators.
Er, let’s look at that again. This is his family’s bank, which paid the family $70 million over the last few years. Now that the bank is in trouble, the best the family can do is to cough up something less than a million dollars to rescue it? Where did the money go?
The feds might like an answer to that question, too — and not just the FDIC. I’ve written about Giannoulias on a few occasions, both here at Hot Air and at Captain’s Quarters. The family bank made a series of loans to Michael “Jaws” Giordano after the latter got convicted on federal charges relating to bookmaking and prostitution in 2004. The loans paid for a casino fleet in Florida in 2005, an odd risk to take for someone who had a record as a pimp and a bookie.
Despite this odd history, Illinois Democrats continued to push Giannoulias for higher office. Democrats gave him a high-profile speaking slot at the 2008 convention. Even while some Democrats in Illinois expressed serious reservations about climbing into bed with a pimp’s banker, Barack Obama kept backing his one-time fundraiser.
Now the big-time fundraiser has run out of money to fix the problems he created at the family business. Illinois voters should take a lesson from this and keep an incompetent from handling taxpayer money, but more importantly, something smells very fishy about Giannoulias and the irregularities at his bank.

The call for Giannoulias to pull out will have to come from the White House, as Alexi is one of Obama’s buddies whom he pushed hard to become Treasurer of Illinois against the state party’s wishes.

Giannoulias has also given different statements about his knowledge of Michael “Jaws” Giordano background. In 2005 he admitted to knowing what “Jaws” did. In 2010, he claimed he did not know. The WGN report than noted his 2005 statement. Giannoulias than said he had no firther comments because he did not want to further contradict himself. Comedy Gold!
Exit Question: Will the Dems push Giannoulias out if the seas get to rough?

Now I have a question. Is it possible that Obama’s hand may be dirty in some of this? Why would he have pushed so hard for this guy to get the Treasury dept, with all this corruption around him? Did this man help Obama? Maybe Obama’s the one who ordered the investigation into the bank? To keep this guy out of D.C.?

I would venture to guess that Giannoulias was nominated by the Dems for the State Treasurary office by Michael Madigan. Obama is probably just a friend of Giannoulias. madigan, though, probably wanted to reward the Giannoulias family for past donations.

One of the real hilarious things about the modern Democrat party is that so many of them, including Obama, consider themselves “Progressives.” One the points of early 20th century progressives was there desire to get rid of party machines, political bosses, and stuff like that.
Good to see it’s all working out so well for them. Real hope and change..

Full disclosure: I’m a former OCC examiner.
That said, I’m not sure who was regulating Broadway Bank (I don’t believe it’s a National Bank so it wouldn’t have been the OCC), but dividend payments of $70 million should have aroused SOME interest on the part of the regulators. I mean, if this is an independent community bank then $70 million has to represent a pretty significant chunk of its capital, even over time.
I’m thinking this may go a little beyond “bad business decisions.”

Oh, and don’t overlook Broadway, when Alexi was there, washed Rezko’s federal minority housing grant money, turning it into campaign contributions to a wide range of politicians including (wait for it) Barak Obama, who endorsed AG for Treasurer, a job this silver spoon was woefully inept at. Yeah BO kept his campaign fund there. Small world.
AG’s election team is furiously trying to paint Mark Kirk as a liar who will say anything to get elected, in contrast to the virtuous Alexi. AG has stayed out of public sight as much as he can.

Get a life. Kirk was targeted by, and kicked, Rahm and the democrat national party’s ass twice in house elections, holding a seat in a D district for 10 years. He’s a naval intel reservist who serves weekends in the Pentagon helping kill bad guys after serving two active duties. Public unions targeted him for the last three election cycles and couldn’t beat him. Clueless dead-ender wingnuts smeared him during the primary and got their asses handed to them. Andy Martin (Anthony Robert Martin Trigiona) already tried to out him as queer, and got his ass handed to him. Now AG, and the dem machine is doing whatever they can to smear Kirk out of desperation. AG is hiding, and will get his ass handed to him if he ever debates Kirk.
He’s a moderate who will win even when Obama comes to campaign for AG, which he probably will: it’s “his seat”.

I heard him give a speech recently and he mimicked Obama’s speaking style complete with pauses and gestures. Full on parroting Obama. It was actually kind of creepy. And he oozes slime ball. I’m sure he’s parrots Obama in other ways too. Expect people who could connect him to criminal behavior to start killing themselves and dragging their own corpses to the river.

Kirk voted for Cap and Trade. He says he’s changed his position. He will be the most ardently pro choice Republican in the Senate. He is endorsed by Planned Parenthood and NARAL. He’s not bad on national security or fiscal issues. Somewhere to the left of Scott Brown and the right of Dick Durbin.

Didn’t read the other comments. sorry if this is a repeat:
