It begins: House Dems backing away from Obama’s deadline for ObamaCare

posted at 4:51 pm on March 4, 2010 by Allahpundit

So how long did Gibbs’s “March 18 or bust” ultimatum last? Four hours maybe?

Decide for yourselves what this means. Either Obama’s own caucus no longer takes him seriously or he’s so removed from the political realities of this vote in the House that he’s placing literally impossible demands on them. “Both” is an acceptable answer.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said the Democrats would like to get a final vote by Congress’ Easter break, which begins March 29. But he also said “the world doesn’t fall apart” if that timeline isn’t met — a nod to the many missed deadlines that have characterized the health overhaul effort so far.

Democratic leaders are contending with a host of undecided lawmakers who want to see the fine print before making a decision. Hoyer said final language and a cost estimate should come back from the Congressional Budget Office by the end of next week.

“At this point in time we don’t have a bill,” Hoyer said. “It’s a little difficult to count votes if you don’t have a bill.”…

“Every legislative lift is a heavy lift around here,” Pelosi said.

Here’s Madam Speaker in Baghdad Bob mode this afternoon, assuring the 34 percent or so of Americans who like the bill that, oh yes, it shall be passed. Not pictured here: Her lie about what Reid’s bill does to abortion funding. Speaking of which, the leader of the House’s pro-choice caucus insists that Stupak is bluffing about having the votes to sink the bill, but I’m getting a distinct Bob-ish vibe from her too. Quote:

“He says he has 10 or 11 people who will vote no, but a lot of those people voted no the first time, but there are also a lot of other people who voted no the first time who now want to support the bill,” she said.

Er, no, not “a lot of those people” voted no the first time. In fact, none of them did. But never mind that. Who are these many no votes she claims are now ready to flip to yes? Give us one name. One.

Blowback

Is this what Americans want?

US dollar set to be eclipsed, World Bank president predicts

United States would be mistaken to take for granted the dollar’s place as the world’s predominant reserve currency, says Zoellick

The United States must brace itself for the dollar to be usurped as the world’s reserve currency as American dominance wanes in the wake of the financial crisis, the World Bank president, Robert Zoellick, warned yesterday.

Speaking ahead of the World Bank/IMF annual meetings in Istanbul, he said it was time for a “responsible globalisation”, in which decision-making was shared between the old powers and developing countries such as China and India.

Ever since the post-second world war Bretton Woods agreement, which cemented the dollar’s ascendancy over sterling, Americans have been able to rely on borrowing cheaply from the rest of the world as governments banked on the dollar as a safe bet. But Zoellick said the greenback’s status could be under threat from the growing strength of the Chinese yuan and the euro.

Delaying this monstrosity until the recess arrives is hugely important. It gives members of Congress a chance to go home and get their a$$e$ handed to them by constituents at town hall meetings (if members of Congress have the guts to hold any, that is). This is what the WH is trying to avoid. Another 24/7 news cycle and few dozen viral youtube videos showing angry citizens screaming at their elected officials would be a disaster for Nobama.

Yes, they are talking about the House passing the Senate bill. But then, there is an assumption that the Senate will make changes in reconciliation to that bill, even though it could be sent straight to The Precedent, as is.

Of course, the House knows that after they pass the Senate bill, nothing is going to be changed, but the idiocy continues, anyway. The House is asking for a signed statement by 51 Senators promising that they WILL make such changes in reconciliation and then pass that through the Senate … LOL.

Perhaps I wasn’t clear…what I at least (thought) I heard was that the rhetoric that has been coming out of the WH since BHO announced his “new plan” is something to the effect that, it’s already received super majority votes in both the house and senate, ergo, no cloture vote is needed in either chamber. They have said that it would just take a simple majority to pass either the senate bill in house, or house bill in senate, BECAUSE WE SAY SO. (Sorry for the caps.)
They are talking about changing the very rules to meet their needs, not adhering to the law, the constitution and the rules in reality.
At risk of ban hammer–I just can’t think of any term that says it better than, “Batchitty.” I know it’s nuts, but this man is seriously, psychotically delusional…I’m not sure they wouldn’t try it.

Again, I so much hope that I’m wrong!

Is this a side-effect from the Botox?

So can we see the bill they sent over to the Obama stooges at the CBO?

Could this have anything to do with the hurry up and wait strategy?:

U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal will delay his resignation from Congress by three weeks, citing intense pressure from House Republican leaders to remain and vote against President Barack Obama’s plan to overhaul the nation’s health care system.

The thinking is that it would be easier to get 51 votes in the senate than a majority in the house…please tell me that they can not do this…Yes, I understand they can’t do it legally, but when has that ever stopped this bunch?
Honest to Pete, I want not only y’all, but a card-carrying troll to tell me this cannot happen.

The Senate could pass the House bill unchanged, but it would need 60 votes to get past cloture. And I’m not sure the House bill is now unchanged. I thought Reid took the House bill, amended it to remove the House version and then amended again to insert the Senate bill. (The “shell bill” technique.)

The House could pass the Senate bill unchanged (Cornhusker Kickback, Lousiana Purchase, no Stupak), and that would go to Obama for his signature. Then it would be law and could be reconciled. Assuming that Obama would care at that point. He has a final, passed bill. All he wants is sa ibll, any bill. The real health care changes kick in in 2013, after the election.

The second is what the House Dems fear. That they’ll have to vote on the Senate version and never get a chance to reverse their votes in reconiliation. They have to run for re-election, having voted for all the stuff in the Senate bill.
