Good news: Left working hard to ensure GOP blowout in Arkansas

posted at 10:09 pm on March 4, 2010 by Allahpundit

Why post on something this parochial? Three reasons. One: It’s an excuse to show you Lincoln’s new ad, which I dig. Amusing, creative, and memorable (and a none-too-subtle shot at Obama and her party). But judge for yourself. Two: Lincoln was, as I’m sure you recall, the 60th vote for cloture on Reid’s bill and she’s been taking a beating for it in polls against hypothetical Republican challengers ever since. The left’s way of saying thanks? Primarying her, of course:

Virtually overnight, outside groups have erased the seemingly insurmountable financial advantage Lincoln brought to the contest. On Tuesday, an umbrella of four labor groups that have long been frustrated over Lincoln’s refusal to support card check legislation — the AFL-CIO, Communications Workers of America, AFSCME and United Steelworkers of America — jointly announced they were each pledging to spend $1 million in an all-out effort to dislodge Lincoln.

By Wednesday morning, a coalition of liberal organizations led by MoveOn.org — which blasted out a fundraising appeal calling Lincoln “one of the worst Democratic senators” — had raised an eye-popping $1.1 million for Halter, Arkansas’s lieutenant governor, who announced his candidacy Monday…

The progressive Netroots, for its part, has embraced Halter, with Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas writing, “Bill Halter will rescue the Democratic establishment from itself and help us hold a seat Lincoln is guaranteed to lose.” Firedoglake blogger Jane Hamsher prominently featured Halter in fundraising appeals on her site and blasted Lincoln as a “corporatist.”…

“Blanche Lincoln has become the living, breathing symbol of a politician who represents the interests of their corporate donors over those of their constituents,” said Hamsher, whose Accountability Now PAC has endorsed Halter.

Three: Make a mental note of the “reality-based community’s” strategy here for the next time some concern troll on MSNBC or the New York Times op-ed page starts fretting about the conservative base’s “purity tests.” Centrist though she is, Lincoln is probably too far left to survive the red wave this November given the realities of her state; by backing a candidate even further left than she is, the nutroots is either (a) engaged in a fiendishly clever strategy to make Lincoln look right-wing to Arkansas voters by contrast or (b) all but conceding this seat to the GOP and using the primary as an opportunity to flex their muscle by bludgeoning a moderate Democrat. My money’s on the second theory. In fact, I suspect this is their way of indulging their id by trying to beat a conservative-ish candidate in an election cycle in which they know real conservatives are going to stomp them into dust. But I digress. Offhand, I can’t think of an example of the famously pure tea party doing something as stupid and self-destructive as backing a far-right candidate in a blue state just to show how “principled” they are or whatever. In which case, your exit question: Which side is the one that’s truly reality-based?

1) You’re not sure.

2) I’m pretty sure she would have… since we’re speculating and all.

MeatHeadinCA on March 4, 2010 at 11:49 PM

Scuzzy wasn’t clear if she would or would not vote for the PelosiCare but when the bill became unpoplar I’m sure the GOP leadership could have moved her to a “no.”

terryannonline on March 4, 2010 at 11:57 PM

Hoffman .. New York?

crosspatch on March 4, 2010 at 11:51 PM

:) Like I said earlier, I thinks we’re going to win this seat back. Ain’t nuttin but a hiccup. Here we come!

El_Terrible on March 4, 2010 at 11:58 PM

She would have voted for Obamacare. Her husband is a union guy. She has strong ties to unions. Scozzafava is pro-abort, embraced same-sex marriage and a number of economic positions that put her politically to the left of Owens.

Demoncrat Owens is to the right of the genius candidate that local GOP establishment gave us.

antisocial on March 4, 2010 at 11:55 PM

Yeah, this is what I heard too… Now, let’s see if NY conservatives can take back the 29th and the 23rd

Why are you so sure? You give no evidence of this power that the GOP has of making people go to the right.

MeatHeadinCA on March 4, 2010 at 11:59 PM

LOL. The Office Rocks.

terryannonline on March 5, 2010 at 12:03 AM

Uh huh… So the question is, was Cao in as moderately liberal a district as Deedee? /s (BTW, no)

Look, all everyone here is trying to point out is that DeeDee wasn’t your average Republican. She seemed to have ties to labor and such (aren’t they pushing for this monstrosity?). So would you prefer Deedee over Hoffman?

MeatHeadinCA on March 5, 2010 at 12:07 AM

MeatHeadinCA on March 5, 2010 at 12:07 AM

Geez, I’m a fiscally and socially conservative….what do u think the answer is?

terryannonline on March 5, 2010 at 12:13 AM

Honestly, from my conversations with you and from what I’ve seen you post, I would think you’d vote for Scozzafava over Hoffman. Am I right?

MeatHeadinCA on March 5, 2010 at 12:16 AM

I suppose the only way we will ever know is if and when one side has a significant victory of that kind…

DaveS on March 5, 2010 at 12:46 AM

There is still 1 option for Lincoln to save herself and get reelected.

become buddies with demint, switch party

voters do forgive mistakes. but you need some time to show you are serious.

and in the course of doing that, enjoy the sweet revenge.

mooseburger on March 5, 2010 at 12:56 AM

Winning isn’t everything but it sure beats second place.

Let the lefty grrlz froth and splash – it doesn’t matter.

platypus on March 5, 2010 at 1:01 AM

It is a good ad. The GOP will have to come up with an equally good counter to her lies.

atheling on March 5, 2010 at 1:37 AM

“using the primary as an opportunity to flex their muscle by bludgeoning a moderate Democrat.”

Why not? After all, it worked so well with Lieberman.

JimC on March 5, 2010 at 2:01 AM

Agree with those who say NY-23 was a very weird race. Hard to predict, hard to poll, just plain odd.

That said, if they voted over again next Tuesday I bet Hoffman would win.

Missy on March 5, 2010 at 3:19 AM

There is no way that anyone more Obamy than Blanche is going to win her Senate seat. Trouble is, most of the Arkansas Republicans are not much better.

Gilbert Baker, once touted as her main challenger, is a Republican of the church choir-director variety. He likes to be well thought of, so much so that he launched his campaign by calling for a State Legislature inquiry into baseless claims of discriminatory employment practices on the part of the State Government that had already been rejected by the Arkansas Supreme Court and Attorney General.

Mercifully, several real conservatives have entered the Republican primary to challenge Baker. This would not ordinarily happen in a state where finding even one Republican candidate for office is often a challenge. Thank you, Tea Partiers.

funny headline AP.

ted c on March 5, 2010 at 6:19 AM

That is ONE GREAT AD…
the GOP should do some with the same theme.

They should have a bunch of spoiled little brats in designer clothes screaming “we want OUR government healthcare.”

That’s exactly what Barry, Harry, and Nancy are… elitist, spoiled brats.

stenwin77 on March 5, 2010 at 7:00 AM

Blanche answers to Arkansas?

Excuse me, what was the question?

BigAlSouth on March 5, 2010 at 7:16 AM

I get all dewy when AP writes like this. Wait…I’m getting a little verklempt…

…ok, I’m better.

AFL-CIO, Communications Workers of America, AFSCME and United Steelworkers of America — jointly announced they were each pledging to spend $1 million in an all-out effort to dislodge Lincoln

This particular part leaves me dumbfounded. Of course, all you need to do to ensure that Lincoln is dislodged is…nothing. She’s toast. And yet these effing union mobsters are taking $1 million each out of their members’ hard earned dues and wasting it on pushing her out in the primary?!

Someone should sue them for unforgivable stupidity.

Jaibones on March 5, 2010 at 8:01 AM

Oh, by the way — ouch. That’s a brutal commercial.

Jaibones on March 5, 2010 at 8:02 AM

Hilarious ad! Thanks for posting, AP.

“Soylent green is made of people !!!!”

Markos Moulitsas – “Yeah; SO??!!”

dissent555 on March 5, 2010 at 8:33 AM

Desperately trying to save her ugly old ass.

Mr. Grump on March 5, 2010 at 8:56 AM

Hoffman .. New York?

crosspatch on March 4, 2010 at 11:51 PM

Hoffman was a red candidate in a red district.
Scuzzy was further to the left than the Democrat who was running.

MarkTheGreat on March 5, 2010 at 8:57 AM

Not to mention the lightning fast race in the few weeks after Hoffman actually got noticed. Had he had more time to spend the money dumped on him from around the country, he could easily have picked up the 2% he lost by. That was a very unique race.

The comparison here being to the likes of longshot like Halter in AR, Hoffman is no Halter, and Lincoln is not the mirror image of Scozzafava.

Pablo on March 4, 2010 at 10:49 PM

Not to mention the RNC dumping almost a million dollars on Scuzzy, which she spent attacking Hoffman, instead of the Democrat.

Then in the end, she very publicly endorsed the Democrat when it became obvious she couldn’t win.

MarkTheGreat on March 5, 2010 at 9:03 AM

chewing up and spitting out Ojesus supporters with nary a thought to the blood and Gore to be cleaned up later…

hillbillyjim on March 4, 2010 at 10:58 PM

At this late date, I doubt it’s possible to clean up Al Gore.

MarkTheGreat on March 5, 2010 at 9:05 AM

NY-23 was moderately Republican. I think national Republicans should have stayed out of that race and let the locals decide for themselves.

terryannonline on March 4, 2010 at 11:04 PM

So the RNC shouldn’t have sent all that money to Scuzzy?

MarkTheGreat on March 5, 2010 at 9:06 AM

You think Scozzafava would have won this race? I doubt it.

antisocial on March 4, 2010 at 11:23 PM

Scuzzy was trailing even before Hoffman caught fire.
Once he did, she dropped to a distant third place in the race.

Anyone who thinks that Scuzzy would have won that race if only we hadn’t backed Hoffman is smoking something illegal.

MarkTheGreat on March 5, 2010 at 9:09 AM

If Scuzzy was too left then why did the voters of that district elect someone to the left her?

terryannonline on March 4, 2010 at 11:21 PM

They didn’t. Of the three candidates in the election, Scuzzy was the most liberal.

MarkTheGreat on March 5, 2010 at 9:11 AM

Proving my point the district: The district is not conservative…it’s moderately liberal one.

terryannonline on March 4, 2010 at 11:37 PM

Any district that has some liberal Republicans in it, is by definition at least a moderate liberal district?

MarkTheGreat on March 5, 2010 at 9:12 AM

I find it very interesting that even Democrats are running against the Democrat party this year.

I’m also wondering how Blance managed to vote against cap and trade, when it hasn’t yet been brought to a vote in the senate.

MarkTheGreat on March 5, 2010 at 9:19 AM

I like the ad but Sen. Lincoln is not very pure. In the original “Jobs” bill, before Sen. Reid gutted it, this was her price.

http://wsbradio.com/blogs/jamie_dupree/2010/02/jobs-bill-as-poultry-bailout.html

Jamie Dupree is a really good “local” reporter in D.C.

Cindy Munford on March 5, 2010 at 10:41 AM

It’s the Second Coming of Ned Lamont! Same backers, same reliably left wing candidate and, inevitably, same result.

Hucklebuck on March 5, 2010 at 12:31 PM

That’s a good ad.

Not sure about the “Tough” lady bit. I think “level-headed” would have fit the purpose of this ad better.

She might actually be able to save her seat.

If the Democrats actually succeed in defeating her in a primary… heh.

Sackett on March 5, 2010 at 12:58 PM

It does seem like a Democratic move that assumes a latitude the party doesn’t have.

That said, you never know. There’s no accounting for what goes on in Arkansas. (Full disclosure: this reader is an Okie born.) Lincoln is peppy and sensible-looking, not one of those Dems who are the names and weathered faces of Everything That’s Wrong Right Now.

She could well survive the primary challenge, and the Arkansas GOP can’t just run any old moderately-warm body against her. Rogering all you say, AP, I wouldn’t guarantee the Red Wave is going to take her down.
