Unions outraged at Obama’s endorsement of mass firing at RI school
posted at 2:55 pm on March 3, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
If nothing else, this New York Times report on the impotent anger of the unions towards Barack Obama serves as an instructive reminder at just how badly the labor movement has botched its strategy over the last few years by aligning itself with the hard Left of the Democratic Party. When Obama endorsed the mass firing of union teachers at a failed Rhode Island school, they seethed over his common-sense reaction, but what can they do? They have nowhere else to go:
The nation’s union leaders said on Tuesday that they were “appalled” at remarks made by President Obama condoning the mass firing of teachers at a Rhode Island high school.
Coming the day after union presidents sharply complained to Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. over stubbornly high unemployment, stagnant wages and the administration’s failure to do more to create jobs, the statement — voicing a rare vehemence toward a Democratic president — underlined the disillusionment of an important Democratic constituency.
Because unions have been so crucial to the Democrats election after election, political experts say labor’s ambivalence, or worse, toward the Democrats could greatly deepen that party’s woes this fall.
“Labor is very disappointed, whether it’s about card check or the effort to tax Cadillac health plans,” said Charles E. Cook Jr., publisher of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, referring to a bill that would have made it easier to unionize and to tax high-cost health plans that many union members have. “They’re really disillusioned. I think one by one unions will start getting engaged and helping out the Democrats, but it could be half-hearted.”
What happened in Rhode Island was a local version of Reagan vs PATCO. The union refused to budge on a plan from the school board and superintendent to reverse a disastrous track record in serving the community. The failure rate was astronomical, and the plan called for additional tutoring (compensated ) and a longer work day — by 25 minutes — in order to get more resources to the students. Bear in mind that the average salary for teachers was three times that of the household income for the community in which they worked. The union said “no dice,” and the town fired every last one of them to start over from scratch.
When Reagan did that with the air-traffic controller union, it pushed most of the labor movement permanently into the arms of the Democratic Party. They have skewed more and more radical since that time, for many reasons, not the least of which is the need to get the federal government to force more workers into unions to address the crises in their underfunded pension plans. However, it’s becoming more and more clear that the unions have both marginalized themselves with the electorate with their radical agenda and reduced their political power with their blind loyalty to the Democrats. Workers don’t want them in the workplace, and Democrats don’t have to worry about losing their support any longer. Like Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman, they have nowhere else to go.

I must say…someone had told me that by electing Obama, the country would end up letting the Democrats rampage each other…I would never have believed it. There still is potential for damage to our country, but as long as we can avoid that aspect this sure has been fun to watch. Blue on blue crime!!! LOL

My idea of what a union does is seen through one of my friends. He’s a talented guy, able to fix many mechanical things. He works in a union shop. The shop went through 6 other people before he hired on and management (non-union) said he’s the best they’ve had. They wanted to bump up his pay and give him a bonus. The union leadership fought against it and he got nothing. “He was too new!” was the reason.
Unions hide the ones that excel and shield the bums.

He had to take this position because he just came out with a plan to spend billions to curtail high drop out rates. Part of his plan is to fire principals and half the staff, or, bus the students to another “high achieving” school. Of course, unlike the proposed R.I. solution, neither of those options will do squat, and the busing option will only serve to ruin the school the deadbeat kids of deadbeat parents are being bused to.

When I taught, I never joined the teacher’s union. I saw it as a waste of my money. We worked on a pay scale determined by the years of teaching experience and had decent insurance. They try to sell you on joining the union on the chance you might get sued. I figured if I did my job, I was good to go. So, I just did my job as best I could.

The union activists love to claim that any working conditions that aren’t up to US standards are by definition “sweat shops”. But the reality is that people flock to these so called sweat shop jobs because the alternatives are so much worse.
The unions are not interested in improving the lot of foreign workers, they want to make them unemployed, so that the union guy doesn’t have to worry about the competition.

Especially because these companies are specifically hiring these people because they’re cheap. Take away that incentive, and the jobs might go as well.

Speaking of union thugs, you would think with CA on the brink of bankruptcy (if not already there), the public employee union might tone it down a bit… but no… they are calling on a massive strike and protest tomorrow (March 4) to “defend education”.
Just like the Greek unions who are rioting and demanding more, more, more as their country burns to the ground, the CA unions are apparently going to do the same thing.
Check out their website. It is straight out of Lenin’s Russia. (Hmmm, interesting, When you google “march 4th defend education”, tons of socialist websites pop up… yes, they actually have the word “socialist” in their website url… and they are all supporting the March 4th protest, shocka!)
http://www.defendeducation.org/?cat=12
After you check out the union thugs’ website, watch the Reason TV video detailing how public unions put CA into it’s current debt-death spiral one protest, one strike, one nickel at a time. High quality, entertaining and eye-opening video!

Unions and other entitlements have ruined many a company and institution. For example look at the state of our educational system where both unions and seniority privileges have led to declines. When you take performance out of the equation for job longevity everyone suffers.

The Administrator was in her right to fire them, they just thought she would cave to whatever demands they made more compensation they make a high salary for a less than wealthy district. If the kids are failing anyway why not higher teachers that will work for less and maybe get better results? In this economy with the amount of people we have out of work? The teachers really don’t think they can’t be replaced?
