Obama: We owe the public an up or down vote on this bill that the public hates

posted at 3:35 pm on March 3, 2010 by Allahpundit

You’re welcome, America.

So, no matter which approach you favor, I believe the United States Congress owes the American people a final vote on health care reform. We have debated this issue thoroughly, not just for a year, but for decades. Reform has already passed the House with a majority. It has already passed the Senate with a supermajority of sixty votes. And now it deserves the same kind of up-or-down vote that was cast on welfare reform, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, COBRA health coverage for the unemployed, and both Bush tax cuts – all of which had to pass Congress with nothing more than a simple majority.

I have therefore asked leaders in both of Houses of Congress to finish their work and schedule a vote in the next few weeks. From now until then, I will do everything in my power to make the case for reform. And I urge every American who wants this reform to make their voice heard as well – every family, every business owner, every patient, every doctor, every nurse.

Missing from this passage, just as its missing from the entire speech? The word “reconciliation.” As you’ll see below, via Greg Hengler, The One’s affecting righteous rage to intimidate Democratic fencesitters but the fact is he can’t even muster the balls to call this procedural travesty by its name. That’s not surprising, as reconciliation actually polls worse than ObamaCare itself, but it does underscore what a pure, sweet fraud his professions of innocence about the politics are. He understands the consequences perfectly well — as does Mitch McConnell — which is why the takeaway line here is “I know it’s right.” That’s the signal to Blue Dogs to vote for the greater good and let the political chips fall where they may. It’s a kamikaze mission, in other words, ordered by yet another prominent Democrat whose own ass conveniently isn’t on the line in November. Amazing how bold he and Pelosi are in asking centrists to ignore their constituents and volunteer for an operation they themselves don’t have to take part in. Chickenhawks!

Exit question: How many times does he have to repeat this crap before the ungrateful thick-headed public “knows it’s right” too? Exit answer: Thirty-five and counting.

I think this is where they plan to abuse the reconciliation process. To pass a separate bill that “reconciles” the law of the senate bill the house will try to pass.

And as other posters have mentioned before, this has not been done before.

So, yes they are making this up as they go along.

meandchi on March 3, 2010 at 4:52 PM

Remember the democrats whining and crying about giving Bush’s judicial nominees and up or down vote?

If they use reconciliation I hope the Republicans fry their asses with it. Simple majority for everything after they win … all judges and dismantle every democrat socialist program.

When we march on D.C. our signs should call for impeachment and imprisonment and protection of the unborn, so help us God.

Berri told the bankers in early ’09 that he is the keeper of the torches and pitchforks … let’s rack up another lie for him and show him who really decides about where the torches and pitchforks belong.

We should also surround the Congress and White House and none should pass. All of D.C. should come to a screeching halt, because the employers (that’s us!!) have finally shown up to stop the employees from ransacking the business (our Nation and our lives!!) and destroying it.

Even if impeachment is not legislatively possible at this point, one million Americans marching on D.C. calling for berri, Nancy and Harry’s downfall would be positively riveting – worldwide embarrassment for little berri, planetary leader; and complete paralysis and abolishment of obamascar.

I know we’re tired, but they’re not. Why should they have the last say and persevere beyond us?

Berri and his forces of evil will not back down; ever. He is counting on us not rearing up and putting him down IN TIME, once and for all. BUT WE MUST.

WE HAVE TO GIVE IT ALL – THE TIME IS NOW OR NEVER –

WE HAVE TO MARCH ON WASHINGTON – NOW!!!!

They know we have scheduled an April 15 march, and of course they will have passed this thing before then. However, we have an imminent nuclear explosion on our hands NOW and we need to be flexible, turn on a dime and show up NOW.

If the tea parties have any idea of the tsunami headed our way, they should be calling for the march NOW.

I don’t have any connections to the greater tea party movement, I’m just one small voice, but I hope others see this and we can get to Washington before April 15, because if we wait until the damage is done, I for one will not march after the fact, like a dummie who has been rolled in the worst way for the final time.

If we march AFTER this goes down, we may as well all carry signs reading, “Congratulations berri, we let a loser like you control our lives, shred our Constitution and help you kill babies. We let a loser like you get ahead of us and what does that make us?”

God Almighty help us. This. Cannot. Happen.

Stupak’s interview with in-the-mud Matthews jist now left me convinced that Stupak is NOT going to budge on the current Senate language concerning abortion.

Crissy asked him twice if he was willing “to bring down the house” because of his personal convictions of pro-life and Stupak did not bat an eye saying its up to Reid and Pelosi to change not me.

Does Obama mean we’re owed a vote on his bill like we’re owed one on the Republican’s conception of health care reform?

Or maybe he means we deserve an up-or-down vote like George W. Bush’s appointments for federal judges were, or his nominees for cabinet positions?

Never mind, we all know the answer: The only votes a leftist like Obama thinks we’re owed are the ones he’s rigged so he’ll win.

Socratease on March 3, 2010 at 5:19 PM

That’s why Pelosi wants a signed statement by 51 Senators that they will vote for reconciliation. She does not trust Harry to just promise the votes. She wants it in writing befor she puts the Senate version up for a vote.

Otherwise Obama, who wants any old bill, would sign the Senate version. He’s not up until 2012.

Wethal on March 3, 2010 at 3:57 PM

If she were smart, she’d have Barry sign a piece of paper promising to sign the reconciled bill into law as well. Otherwise, she’s going to be left with egg all over her face when he “decides” that the people really only want what is in the original Senate bill.

What we need — and it is every bit as constitutional as Osama Obama’s totalitarian “health” “care” atrocity — is an up-or-down vote of no confidence aimed at the Chicago Jesus, Pelosi, Reid, Rangel, Schumer, and the rest of the traitorous thugs in Congress and the White House who are hell-bent on destroying this nation.

MrScribbler on March 3, 2010 at 5:26 PM

When all of this started many moons ago, the economy wasn’t as much of a pressing issue, now it is, and aside from the freedom and liberty eviscerating effects of such a takeover, we now have the addition issue of it breaking the bank.

Forget about the fact that the far-left national socialists want to destroy the best healthcare in the world, forget about the absolute control they will have over everyone’s life, we simply cannot afford this.

Why can’t our “ruling elite” get that through their thick skulls?

This is a frenzied effort to preserve their welfare state. Revenues to the treasury have gone over the waterfall, so they need cash right now. I will be surprised if a single dime is ever be spent on actual health care for the presently uninsured.

flyfisher on March 3, 2010 at 3:57 PM

That would surprise me not at all. I’ve always been suspicious of the 4 years of taxes being collected before any benefits are paid out. It seems like a convenient way for Obama to soak the middle class and small businesses without officially raising income taxes.

Doughboy on March 3, 2010 at 4:00 PM

I think the bill’s true intent is hidden in plain sight.

From Whitehouse.gov:

Protect the Social Security Trust Funds.
The President’s Proposal provides that, if necessary, funds will be transferred to the Social Security Trust Funds to ensure that they are held harmless by the Proposal.

Social Security tax collections have, here-to-date, been sufficient to meet current obligations. However, we have known for years that the day would come when that would not be the case, ergo the repeated calls from conservatives, including President Bush, to fix the system. Well, thanks to this Democraptastic economy, less people are working, more people are taking early retirement, and average hours worked has dropped, thereby accelerating the Social Security insolvency schedule.

A few years ago .gov said the program would be insolvent in 2017. Last year the trustees shortened their estimate by a year, claiming insolvency would come in 2016. But conditions are such that I believe insolvency will come much sooner than 2016, almost certainly before Obama’s first time is over.

Why do I believe that? For starters, the trustees based their estimates on unrealistically low unemployment rates. They estimated a rate of 8.2% for 2009 and no more than 8.8% for 2010. (Their long-term analysis was based on an insanely low 5.5% rate for the next two generations.) They also underestimated the number of early retirees.

Back to my point, I think they see the writing on the wall. Foreign countries will not loan us money to fund these deficits forever and Barry and the libs know it. Heck, our creditors don’t even have enough in reserve to be able to keep funding our deficits, so .gov is desperate for cash.

When you combine all of that with the cratering revenues to the general fund (as opposed to the fictional Social Security “trust fund”), I believe this is an insane attempt to keep the welfare state afloat (God forbid they level with the citizens) for a few more years until they can get their other socialist money grabbing schemes in place, like cap and tax. Soon they will rollout some sort of plan to steal IRA and 401(K) assets under the guise of protecting people from market risk. They simply must have way more money than they are taking in and they will stop at nothing to get it.

Has anyone even DRAFTED a version of a reconciliation bill that can start going through the process yet? Because if not, it’s going to take a heck of a long time to get that going. And you just know that Barry will tell Congress that they can’t be “wasting time” on something as minor as a reconciliation bill while people don’t have jobs and the economy is in the toilet.

I hope someone is explaining this to the members of the House…

A couple of things to remember and to remind others of:
.
These Congressmen and Senators have either stolen money from us, essentially by accepting a monetary deal (of US Government money, i.e., taxes) for their constituents in exchange for their vote, or have created benefits for their constituents by signing everyone else up to a titanic loan.
.
While the Congressmen and Senators may think that even if they fall on their swords to pass ObamaCare and fail to get re-elected, getting a job with a prestigious law firm or lobbying firm, or other protected career source will be their reward, they’re wrong.
.
They and the private firms, may be effectively untouchable, but their major clients are not.
.
.
We can boycott the firms that retain, use, contract with, or otherwise have some sort of business relationships with these outgoing Members of Congress. Or their children. Or their grandchildren. Or any members of their immediate and extended families. For the next 50 years.
.
They did not hear us; there is no reason we should hear them.

Anyone remember Sarah Palin being mocked for her description of the duties of Vice President? The media sneered that “President of the Senate” was just a ceremonial title, with no real duties other than an occasional tiebreaker.

That’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout.

P.S. if our GOP reps have the spine, then they will stop ALL legislation completely until the berri and his fellow travelers back off and lay down – flat.

And I have a feeling the American people would love nothing better than to see the Congress that they loathe be brought to a standstill. We won’t miss their crime-of-the-century theft of the Treasury (filled with OUR money and trillions in nation-destroying IOU’s, in our name and several future generations’ names), not to mention their thousands of useless and restrictive “laws”.

Tonight, Barack Obama will host ten House Democrats who voted against the health care bill in November at the White House; he’s obviously trying to persuade them to switch their votes to yes. One of the ten is Jim Matheson of Utah. The White House just sent out a press release announcing that today President Obama nominated Matheson’s brother Scott M. You know what scares me almost as much as reconciliation? The apathy of the average American.

The folks I see day to day–even if this passes, even if they’re disgusted–will shrug and hope for the best. I think the Dems know this. I think they’re banking on it.

That said: what Americans DO respond to is scandal. If this thing blows into a Constitutional crisis, then, yeah. Maybe American apathy will finally die a very timely death.

I hope the GOP is thinking of this, and I hope they’re planning to push this to scandal level. I hope they won’t stop until they do.

Until then, I’m praying Americans finally wake up.

But we can’t pay for any of the entitlements, not the old ones, and not this new one. On a certain level, what’s the difference what some deranged coot like Obama promises if there’s no money to pay for it, or if it’s a “law.” When there’s no more money, there’s no more money. At some point, nobody will buy US treasuries, so eventually, there’s a limit to how much they can spend. Similarly, there’s only so much money they can print. So my point is, that this new entitlement will destroy our economy, and steal any money you may have saved, but it certainly won’t last long.

That’s not surprising, as reconciliation actually polls worse than ObamaCare itself, but it does underscore what a pure, sweet fraud his professions of innocence about the politics are…

…Amazing how bold he and Pelosi are in asking centrists to ignore their constituents and volunteer for an operation they themselves don’t have to take part in. Chickenhawks!

Such never before encountered arrogance and tone-deafness/ideological drive against those who pay the bills must be, and will be, PUNISHED.

I believe millions of Americans owes the Congress a final vote on November, 2010! There are more of us, so we trump you!

How about an up or down vote to outlaw the Democrat/Progressive party?

Just a thought. F**k you too, Obama.

from WSJ “Best of the Web”

Obama’s Discarded Wisdom
Breitbart.tv has a terrific two-minute video featuring clips of Barack Obama commenting on the need to build consensus before attempting to enact major social legislation. (If the above link doesn’t work, try this one.) As a public service, we’ve transcribed the Obama comments:

• “My understanding of the Senate is, is that you need 60 votes to get something significant to happen, which means that Democrats and Republicans have to ask the question: Do we have the will to move an American agenda forward, not a Democratic or Republican agenda forward?”–CBS-TV election night interview, Nov. 2, 2004

• “The bottom line is that our health-care plans are similar. The question, once again, is: Who can get it done? Who can build a movement for change? This is an area where we’re going to have to have a 60% majority in the Senate and the House in order to actually get a bill to my desk. We’re going to have to have a majority, to get the bill to my desk, that is not just a 50-plus-1 majority.”–Change to Win convention, Sept. 25, 2007

• “You’ve got to break out of what I call the sort of 50-plus-1 pattern of presidential politics. Maybe you eke out a victory of 50 plus 1, but you can’t govern. You know, you get Air Force One–I mean, there are a lot of nice perks, but you can’t deliver on health care. We’re not going to pass universal health care with a 50-plus-1 strategy.”–interview with the Concord (N.H.) Monitor, Oct. 9, 2007

• “You know, one of the arguments that sometimes I get with my fellow progressives–and some of these have flashed up in the blog communities on occasion–is this notion that we should function sort of like Karl Rove, where we identify our core base, we throw them red meat, we get a 50-plus-1 victory. But see, Karl Rove doesn’t need a broad consensus, because he doesn’t believe in government. If we want to transform the country, though, that requires a sizable majority.”–Center for American Progress, July 12, 2006

Although the site that originated the video seems to be anti-Obama in orientation (it’s called Naked Emperor News, presumably meant to compare the president to the character in the fable), we must say that most of what Obama said back then is eminently sensible. He explained almost as well as we can why what he is doing now–pushing Congress to “transform the country” precisely via a “50-plus-1″ strategy, is so foolish and dangerous.

Observers will disagree over what combination of ideological radicalism, egomania and sheer cynicism is motivating him, but what is clear is that President Obama is quite different from what Candidate Obama advertised.

Barry ! You do not owe the public an up and down vote on a health care bill it indicated in no uncertain term that it does not want. You owe the tax paying public a lot of money for all your incompetence and misspendings. You owe the public your resignation.

I see your point in that even if it passes it will destroy our economy completely so it won’t last long – but if that’s right then we could say that the same thing should have happened in Cuba – they are broke since forever and the people are forever saddled with horrendous socialist “healthcare”. The point is that we will lose the ability to bring it out of govt. control and back to the free market in whatever form it devolves to because we are a collapsed economy.

P.S. I agree with your take that once obama gets the House to pass the Senate bill, he will stab them in the back and just shoot it through the Senate. He is nothing, if not a consummate liar and betrayer.

The man is many things but not dumb.
He is a committed Marxist. Look who he surrounds himself with.
To say he is dumb is to diminish the danger.

This man is very effectively SPENDING us into socialism.
Once he so overwhelmes the system that it collapses turning all our savings into monopoly money and making us all equal, he thinks a bunch of people will beg the government to take care of them.
So many will beg for it that socialism or marxism will result.

We will all be equally poor and dependent upon Government.
At this he has been very effective, he must be stopped.

OK, I’m freaking out too…but we must remember: IN GOD WE TRUST. Oblahblah has no idea what those four words mean. He hates this country and therefore he hates us. We’ve always played by the rules while he and his ilk work to circumvent them.

This is his plan – to agitate us, to stir us up, to keep us off balance. He is an evil man. We must remain resolute in our goal and our purpose. We know our country and our beliefs and ourselves. These three things mean nothing to him.

This is what we do:
*burn the phones to every (D) representative in our respective states and tell them exactly what we think about their vote for this;
*tell them that we will NOT forget their vote for this socialist agenda;
*tell them how quickly they WILL be on their asses in November; and
*tell them that we WILL take an ‘up or down’ on impeachment (beginning at 12:01 AM on November 3, 2010).

They are either with us or against us, it’s us versus them, and they’d better make sure their comfortable with the side they’ve chosen.

When I read, “If reconciliation fails, then Obama will sign the Senate version,” I get all confused. If reconciliation “fails,” presumeably because Obama doesn’t have the votes in the House, aren’t we back to the 60 vote threshold? Is the Senate bill ready for the president’s signature as presently consituted? I can’t even remember what happened to the Senate bill anymore–all the kabuki, and scaled down bills, and threats of parliamentary tactics that nobody is talking about–did the Cornholing happen before Brown 41 or after? Did Nelson’s desire for pizza overcome his desire to “make history”? I thought that after Brown got elected, immediately work on the Senate bill stopped, and then all the juking, jiving and kabuki-iving began. And wasn’t the Senate debating a bill that wasn’t really written yet? Somebody set me straight. Is “the Senate bill,” assuming such a thing actually exists, ready for the president’s signature?

smellthecoffee on March 3, 2010 at 10:33 PM

The only way to stop this open bribery is for our State AG’s to announce that if a vote changes after something like this is announced that they will bring both the person getting promoted, the Congressperson taking the Bribe and Potus up on charges.
journeyintothewhirlwind on March 3, 2010 at 7:15 PM

petefrt on March 3, 2010 at 10:40 PM

We’d better start looking for ways to undo this debacle or to re-make it so it won’t break the bank down the line busily covering 30 million (one tenth?)of our population. When you consider that all? of the states already have Medicaid programs by various politically correct names, I fail to see why we even need much of this. It’s not going to slow or turn around the present health care escalations. As soon as all this money becomes available, the health care industry will most certainly find one way or another to cash in. They always have and they always will. I’m going to be a little tongue in cheek here and say ‘that’s the American way’ whether Obama and company like it or not.

I always thought that when the National Debt became irreversible that I would see a government takeover and acquisition of National Resources, as in energy and agriculture etc….

But I guess I was thinking a little ‘old-school’.

Taking over a fifth of the economy, by the Health Insurance Hi-Jack, then squeezing the blood out of America, is just as good, I guess.

Nice Job, Obama.

Had a dizzy Dem tell me this AM that she has Medicare and she likes it so why shouldn’t everybody have it. It wasn’t even worth answering. If this is the way these folks think then there’s no way out. The best we can hope for is our brand of hope and change down the line. We’ve got to modify this back breaking plan later.

jeanie on March 3, 2010 at 11:04 PM

the president urged them to ignore the politics. “I do not know how this plays politically, but I know it’s right,” he said. “Let’s get it done

Also this quote from a WSJ article on Drudge kind of says it all. He knows it’s right and He is never wrong and anything we dim wits might think out here in America is a product of manipulation by the right wing media. This man is just plain mentally ill!

jeanie on March 3, 2010 at 11:28 PM

Dear Mr. President;

Please do not rush the vote on Health Care Reform, as an American voter I can wait. Please dont rush on our account.

A final vote on the House Bill, the Senate Bill, Your own Bill #1, Bill #2, Bill #3, Bill #4, Bill #5 can wait until 2011 or 2013. Really, what is the rush?

America as a nation has done well, so far, without your Reform Bills, we can wait a year, or two, or longer for it. We dont need Christmas in July this year.

Take your time, relax, have a beer and a smoke, think about it a little.

Hey, lets pass it when the Cubs win a Worlds Series again. That would be a fine celebration.

wi farmgirl on March 4, 2010 at 6:39 AM

I love what I heard on Mark Levin’s show last night……

“What can be done with reconciliation can be undone with reconciliation.”

Suppose socialized medicine is passed soon via reconciliation, and Republicans sweep the House and Senate. And suppose Obama vetos repeated attempts to roll back socialized medicine. How hard can it be for Republicans to say “Increase our majorities and remove the veto-monger, and we’ll roll back socialized medicine!” Hell, they can nominate a chimpanzee and get away with that strategy.

olesparkie on March 4, 2010 at 7:14 AM

I suppose Barry will misinterpret the relative silence as acquiescence. Another miscalculation…

JiangxiDad on March 4, 2010 at 7:24 AM

Tell me, what do you guys think about this?

What if this healthcare plan being jammed down our throats is an attempt to make sure the Dems don’t lose the house?

What’s more important to Obama? Agenda or ego? If it was ego, he wouldn’t let the poll numbers drop as far as they have.

Now, if the Republicans take back the house, he can’t finish working on his agenda. Remember, he said he’d rather be a successfull one-term president than do nothing in two terms. Success to him would mean getting his agenda through. He can’t do that if the Republicans take over in November.

Enter healthcare. The public hates the bill. The numbers don’t look good. If it goes through the public will vote the Dems out in retaliation.

What if Obama and Pelosi are making themselves out to be the villans on purpose, pretending to ram an unpopular bill down out throats, so that if/when the bill fails in the house the Dems who voted no can go back to their constituants as heroes who stood up against an unpopular president and defeated an unpopular bill? This way the public (who Obama and Pelosi would hope they have short-term memories) would vote them back for a new term and the Dems won’t lose the house.

Why else would reconciliation be such a buzzword if the bill’s gotta go thru the House first anyways? Because the people don’t want this bill and they don’t want it thru reconciliation even worse. The Democrats have got to know that.
