Inevitable: Palin working on second book

posted at 8:32 pm on March 3, 2010 by Allahpundit

I wanted to kick this off with the most recent figures on how many copies “Going Rogue” has sold, but believe it or not, I can’t find a solid number. ABC reported way back in December that she’d sold 2.7 million copies, but that was surely a mistake. I wrote a post the same day noting other reports that she’d moved a million units; I think it was the print run that had been bumped to 2.7 million, not the actual purchases (yet). Anyone know the exact sales numbers?

Long story short, she’s got a money machine. And HarperCollins is ready to switch it back on.

Publisher HarperCollins announced Wednesday that the former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate is working on a “celebration of American virtues and strengths.” The book is currently untitled and no release date has been set.

Palin’s memoir, “Going Rogue,” released last fall by HarperCollins, has sold more than 2 million copies. Her new work will “include selections from classic and contemporary readings that have inspired her, as well as portraits of some of the extraordinary men and women she admires and who embody her love of country, faith, and ,” the publisher’s statement reads.

Sounds a lot like some of McCain’s books, actually. Odds on a release date shortly before the Christmas shopping season gets going: High.

Update: Politico says she’s sold more than 2.2 million copies. For comparison purposes, Bill Clinton’s memoir has reportedly sold 2.25 million. Belated exit question: Will Dubya’s book sell more or less?

Blowback

Good move Sarah!

AP is wrong to say this is all about money. Sarah is already set for life (1st book sales, Fox gig, umpteen speaking fees).

This reminds me of JFK writing his “Profiles in Courage” book. Sarah wants to “Lift America’s Spirits” and this book will be an excellent opportunity.

sarahpalinfan99 on March 3, 2010 at 10:31 PM

Hannity is on TV in the background. I just heard him tell Juan Williams that Palin was a lot smarter than Obama. Juan fell out of his chair with utter disbelief that anyone, anyone would challenge the Bamster’s intellectual superiority. It was beautiful.

Yet Barry won’t release his transcripts. Maybe he doesn’t want to embarrass the rest of us.

Palin wants her share of the GOLD-line.

2 – Ideology
3 – Policy

Spirit of 1776 on March 3, 2010 at 8:46 PM

Makes perfect sense to me. And it seems other politicians have followed this trend quite frequently, so why the fuss?
I will be buying Dubya’s book, too.

Buckeye Babe on March 3, 2010 at 10:51 PM

Good for her and her family. I hope she sells millions of them. I want Trig to be a very happy man.

Mirimichi on March 3, 2010 at 10:52 PM

I wonder will she mention anything about lower taxes and supporting the troops. Just not enough talk of that.

Decider on March 3, 2010 at 10:54 PM

Is this one A) going to be written by her and B) going to be non-fiction this time?

She did write the last book moron. Wrote it using journals she has kept all of her life.

Obama is having Bill Ayers write him a book, too.

Working Title:

Yeah, it’s terrible. She’s being manipulated by the publishers. Heartache.

Spirit of 1776 on March 3, 2010 at 8:46 PM

Once again the “experts” are confounded. “How did she wind up at the top of the leader board” the political pundits mused shaking their heads. ” She’s too stupid. She’s too shallow. She’s too polarizing.”, they cried in unison. “Well, she’ll never get elected, she didn’t follow any of our advice.”, they opined to an ever diminishing audience.

davo on March 4, 2010 at 12:13 AM

I just noticed that Palin’s book sold in 4 months what it took Clinton’s “My Life” 6 years to sell.
Gee, she is so irrelevant. Right Allahpundit??

LeeSeneca on March 4, 2010 at 12:35 AM

allah the king of double standard.

comments show alot of people do not understand it takes alot of money to run a campaign. The question you should ask yourself do you want someone indpendently wealthy running or someone beholden to speciual interests and their money running.

the fact that Palin is now independent wealth gives her more freedom to tell it like it is. She needs to bow to no person unlike Obama and Soros.

Is Sarah Palin going exposure crazy?

sonnyspats1 on March 3, 2010 at 11:21 PM

Yeah because she really needs to spend those millions during the campaign to get her name out there so people know her instead of on her policy and ideaology.

Here is a tip while maybe 10% know who Danials , Tpaw, Jindal, thune are 90% know who Palin is. that is something that cost millions upon millions during a campaign something which Palin does not need to do. She is starting 90 yards ahead of almost everyone else in a 100 yeard dash.

ah of course. Allahpundit cannot post a single topic about Palin without denigrating her. Even with one word. The word is not ‘money’ AP, you ignorant slut. It is ‘politics’.
She’s going to plunk a book all about traditional American values right smack in the Donk’s laps at the height of the campaign season. But all you can see / assert is ‘money’.

Here’s to Mrs. Palin being the Presidential candidate of the Tea Party in 2012! And then those of you who don’t like her can still support Romney or Huckabee or whomever as the Republican candidate. With two strong, anti-Obama candidates like that, the Democrats will be lucky to eek out 40-45% of the vote.

factoid on March 4, 2010 at 8:08 AM

IMHO – Palin is not running for any political office in the near future.

She is the lightning rod that will draw the left ire. She will continue to make her speechs and the left will continue to focus on her instead of the conservitive canidate for 2012.

She is both the catnip and the wolvesbane for the hate monsters on the left. And I think she knows it.

Which would be a plurality, and they would win.

Not gonna happen. The GOP is smart enough to see that the Tea Partiers are a core constituency. Most of the Tea Partiers are smart enough to realize that splitting the vote on the Right ensures victory for the Left.

skydaddy on March 4, 2010 at 9:38 AM

I think she is entitled to make all the money she wants just like everyone else in America. Those who think otherwise are petty.

tinkerthinker on March 4, 2010 at 9:50 AM

None of this makes sense.

Who a.) makes a well-received speech at a national party convention, then b.) writes a book then c.) another book? No one like that will ever become president.

rjkitch13 on March 4, 2010 at 9:51 AM

You’re not looking at the whole picture. Palin is just repeating a winning formula – write a book that her adoring masses will buy like it contained the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.

If she’s not raising PR and $$$ for her 2012 run, she’s at least cementing her fanbase very well.

I’m ready to hear more about her policy issues. I do think she’s got more depth than we get to see right now.

That just is logical, frankly. TV exposure is great, but you’re limited to soundbites.

Dark-Star on March 4, 2010 at 10:33 AM

The opportunity was there, and she took it. As she would say, “God opened a door.”

The frivolous ethics charges in Alaska nearly bankrupted her, so she made the move to media. If you can’t beat them, join them.

There is no reason to rule out a presidential run, though it’s too early to make any announcements. Her opponents are terrified that she might, so the fascination continues. She is laughing all the way to the bank.

When life hands you lemons, you hollow them out, glue doll-eyes to them, and make Crazy Lemon Marionette Theater 3000.

chunderroad on March 4, 2010 at 10:40 AM

Ok listen up everybody. I will explain to you the media and the left’s fascination with Sarah Palin. I know you all think its because they are terrified of her, and they must stop her from running for president because they all know she’s gonna swoop in there and clean up Washington and put all them darn liberals in their place, you betcha! But here is the real reason behind the fascination:

Sarah Palin is a friggin’ moron and its fun to see what kind of nonsense is gonna spew out of her piehole every time she speaks. that’s it. Seriously. No one is afraid of her, I promise you. The left hopes to god she runs because she doesn’t have a change in hell of winning. Not a chance. It would be great to see her win the primary though, just to get to she trounced in the general. Sadly, I’m afraid there just aren’t that many mouth breathers in the flyover states. (Although reading all the comments on this site gives me a little hope.)

Seriously though, we are talking about a woman who thought Africa was a country. A woman who thinks humans roamed the earth with dinosaurs. A woman who couldn’t name one single magazine she reads, or one single Supreme Court decision she agrees with. A woman who thinks her state’s proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience. I could go on and on. But you get the idea.

So please Sarah, please run for president. Times of been hard for Stewart and Colbert since Bush left office.

Erock on March 4, 2010 at 12:22 PM

No one is afraid of her, I promise you.

Of her, no.

Of what she’s likely to do if elected POTUS, you’d better believe people are scared!

Sarah Palin might be deploying a good strategy by saving money in the future by getting her name out there now rather than spending millions to get her name out there during the election…

…but that strategy might back fire. Its called over saturation. Too much media attention will result people tuning her out because they see her too much on television.

As a result of over saturation, people may not want to vote for her in 2012.

So, showing herself too much might backfire on her. It depends on how she plays her hand and where the line is of where people want her and where they get sick and tired of her.

Are you aware that a brief Google search would debunk every single point you just made? No, prefer to believe the common media narrative, do you? Spiffy.

And AP, I appreciate your skepticism of Sarah Palin’s credentials. I do not appreciate your consistently cynical tone. I can tell whether you or Ed wrote a Palin post just by the title. Keep asking tough questions, but please stop snickering in our faces: it’s getting tiresome.

Erock on March 4, 2010 at 12:22 PM

No, thank you. As for you, it is better to keep silent than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.

chunderroad on March 4, 2010 at 4:20 PM

I’ve been turned around on this. I thought it would be hideous and couldn’t imagine reading such a book. But I do agree that for her to announce a policy book at this stage would draw such an army of factcheckbots and their lies onto the media stage that it would outweigh any message she chose to send. Better to take salami slices at her standing in the public eyes by releasing an oblique book that shows her thinking and indirectly states her goals and ideas. The policy book can wait.

As for the Alaska show, it sounds brilliant. A palate cleanser after the gloom and doom of Odumbo and his drones. A reminder of America’s beauty and natural strength. And a chance to show the public that the glaciers haven’t disappeared, nor the ice, nor the polar bears.

I just hope she gets a good budget in order to do it properly. These kinds of shows used to be what made Discovery Channel great and people loved them. But Discovery have lost the art – it’s too expensive to do it right. Hopefully Palin et al can reverse that thinking.
