Video: MSNBC host confronts tea partiers about their Nazi sympathies or something
posted at 7:13 pm on March 2, 2010 by Allahpundit
Dynamite grandstanding from a guy who’s practiced in the art. In his rush to holler at the wingnut hordes, though, he actually misses an opportunity. Instead of challenging Williams on some of the kookier things he’s said, which would have illustrated the point about occasionally blurry lines between the fringe and mainstream, Ratigan’s content to shout his way to morally righteous nirvana. Not sure why; the position of shrieking liberal on MSNBC has already been filled nicely, thank you.
Two questions that are never answered in these guilt-by-association harangues: What, precisely, does Ratigan want to see happen to condemn the racists in the group, and what does he suppose tea partiers gain politically by being linked to them? On the first point, there’s no leader or central authority to do the necessary excommunication; in fact, one of the key principles of the movement is to stay as informal and decentralized as possible. If a Klansman calls himself a tea partier, there’s not much one can do to “prove” he isn’t short of either surveying tea party organizers or self-styled tea partiers nationwide about whether they want scumbags in the ranks. I don’t doubt what the result would be (nor, in all likelihood, does James Carville), but I guess Ratigan does. On the second point, since the raison d’etre of the party is to exert pressure on politicians to shrink government, how on earth would the movement as a whole benefit from voluntarily embracing fringe characters? It would be self-discrediting and give big government proponents every reason in the world to dismiss them (which, of course, is why Ratigan, Frank Rich, etc. are so eager to talk about the fringier elements). Ratigan himself acknowledges at the beginning here that the tea party is based on some noble civic principles. In which case, what? They have a political death wish to sabotage those principles by holding keggers with Nazis? I don’t get it.
Then again, those ‘baggers do seem awfully confused lately. Why, just a few days ago, Jim Bunning’s office was the target of a bomb threat. I wonder which nefarious right-wing proto-terrorist outfit was responsible for that.

Why do those that are anti-tea party insist on saying tea partiers are racists? Honest question- and I am getting sick of reading letters to the editor calling us racists.

check out Glenn becks rant at the end today, on just why it is Dems would call Republicans nazi’s? Why because they are on the same side of the scale because of “Progressivism”. Later claiming support for the “Progressive” Patriot Act confirms it, moving both his Red/Blue lines on his diagram next to Mao, Stalin, Hitler, etc.
truly idiotic and ignorant segment. He had George Washington on the far Right. I wonder if he realizes what all George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson did under their Article II powers in the name of National Security? Are the Founders “Progressives”?

It has nothing to do with race. It has all to do with putting one’s opponent on the defensive, ridiculing them and making them live up to some false standard.
The thing Williams should have done was immediately point out MSNBC’s lack of diversity and ask if they’re really qualified to be talking about racism when they seem to be a hotbed of racism themselves.

Ratigan makes himself out to be a complete dolt.
I don’t even know any racist Tea Party people. If anyone should be gone after for not distancing themselves from racists it is Ron Paul – which is part of the reason I don’t support Ron Paul and don’t consider him a Tea Party candidate or many of his supporters Tea Party members. They would love the support and are vying for support but Paul’s isolationism and other extreme views are outside Tea Party views.
It’s not like Democrats don’t have their racists and other warts, either. In fact there is a long history of racism being embraced by the Democrat party. Hopefully we are all moving past those issues.
Mr Purple on March 2, 2010 at 7:45 PM
What lib group is he talking about? I know a lot of liberal Democrat groups are filled with wackos and racists, but I never heard him name a specific one.
Yeah, guilt by association, no matter how small must always be defended by any individual or group that is conservative.
Of course, Liberals and Democrats can associate with pretty much anyone they want, crime families, communist dictators, thugs, tax cheats, terrorists and the like and the silence is deafening.

I contend that neither party has a monopoly on intra-racial discord.

I thought Ratigan was pretty good on Fast Money…Is he trying to pay off gambling debts or something??? Why is he working for the nuts at MSNBC. He’s selling his soul for a paycheck for whatever reason…The lefties are trying desperately to “Palinize” Tea-Partiers…Stop talking to them and police your own ranks, i.e. weed out the nut-jobs. And, some of the nut-jobs will be paid by Moveon.org. Even more reason for the Tea-party movement to remain truly a grass roots campaign of average Americans. The shriller the left become, the more we know it is working…

I used to watch a trading show on CNBC that had DR as the host and he seemed to have a sense of humor and a more even keel approach.
This person now seems “disturbed”, as in off his meds, or just informed of a pink slip in his near future.
I think there’s a little too much RED BULL flowing at MSLSD.

Alinsky tactics in action: pick a target, frame it, isolate it.
George Soros orders them and they do what he says.
dthorny on March 2, 2010 at 7:55 PM
What’s truly maddening is that the Left has imbued their propaganda into the culture so much that is they who can be racists and national socialists without any consequences.
Meanwhile, Conservatives are constantly on the defensive for just being Conservatives.
Chip on March 2, 2010 at 7:55 PM
A foundational belief of Leftism is that underclass whites will be better off under Leftist policies, and that this is so manifestly true that even the underclass whites themselves cannot possibly fail to realize it. The only way the Right ever wins elections, in this view, is because it uses racial and religious identity politics to convince underclass whites to act against their economic self-interest. Read Thomas Frank’s What’s the Matter with Kansas for a full treatment of this notion… or rather don’t read it, because it’s a titanic bucket of codswallop.
At any rate, yes, Ratigan absolutely, fundamentally, unshakably believes that the Tea Party movement doesn’t merely embrace kooks but actually depends upon them for its success. Exposing that connection is a win-win for him: Either the Tea Party disavows the kooks and thus alienates underclass whites, or it fails to disavow the kooks and alienates educated voters. That the kooks are entirely irrelevant to the Tea Party’s success is simply inconceivable to Ratigan.

I agree. Many on the left wage their whole wad on the inflated canards about the right, especially race, gender and sexuality issues.
The Race Card on March 2, 2010 at 8:05 PM
The left WANTS The Tea Partiers to be Nazis because they dont want to have to compromise or defend their positions. They just want it to be OK to hate them and racism is the only sin left that allows them to do so. Really, it’s nothing more than lazy hatred.

That’s an interesting way of expressing that but I would agree.
I submit that it is the left that keeps the race issue alive for their own benefit.
It would be really nice if we could just judge people on their character and not on external appearances that are out of their control.

The Dems are trying to smear the Tea Partiers as racists. Who wants to join or support a racist organization?
Tea Party representatives need some canned responses to counter this kind of smear, like “We condemn racism and welcome all black, white, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American patriots who care about liberty and fiscal responsibility to join us in fighting the government overreach and reckless spending that threatens ALL our futures.”

First, I didn’t hear what the dip from the Southern Poverty Law Center was claiming prior to Mark coming on…but the Ratman was acting like it was common knowledge that the Tea Parties embrace racism and anti-semitism (both tools of the left) and that people are carrying signs that say they want to kill blacks and Jews. I think he was trying to act like Ogreman…probably hoping for a big raise or either on some serious drugs…maybe both!
Finally, as I was walking past the TV a few minutes later, I heard the tailend of more ranting from him about the Tea Parties, but I didn’t hear what all was said…will search for a video update. What a putz!

How many Black Panthers have you encountered in your life? When was the last time either of these groups made any news? I can’t remember anything since Holder dropped the investigation into BP polling place antics. Black Muslims are not newsworthy just because they happen to be black and call a loony-bigot “prophet.”
News is not a game of tit-for-tat. TP protesters have captivated the attention of pundits, newsies and newsers. Though somewhat strained, the coverage, bias aside, can be justified.

If you are asking if there are racists in the Tea Parties and/or Republican party then the answer is obviously yes. There are also I am sure cannibals. I don’t know Jeffrey Dahmer’s party affiliation. If it turns out to be Democratic do we get to call them the Cannibal Party?
If not, then perhaps we should look at the party platform and their conduct rather, than individual members that neither party has any control over.
If we do that it is clear that the Democrats pander to race extensively, and many of their leaders are in fact racist.
