GOP rep: Obama’s “bipartisan” bill has less substance than … “Jersey Shore”; Confirmed: Obama to endorse reconciliation tomorrow
posted at 6:24 pm on March 2, 2010 by Allahpundit
Actually, he went even further than that. And if you’ve seen this clip, you know just how far he went. Good lord.
There are some insults, my friends, that even the left doesn’t deserve.
U.S. Representative Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) released the following statement after President Barack Obama announced his intentions to incorporate only four minor Republican ideas into the 2,000-plus page health care bill:
“I don’t know if we should be insulted or humored at the President’s feeble attempts to incorporate Republican ideas into his latest health care proposal. Snookie, from the Jersey Shore, has more substance than President Obama’s offer.
“Instead of listening to the American people, the President has once again demonstrated his arrogance and ignorance about what the nation expects from its leaders. This is “The Situation,” Mr. President: the American people do not want unconstitutional mandates and job-killing tax increases. They are concerned with the costs of premiums, the quality of their health care and ensuring their children and grandchildren are not left with the bill. If you want to govern with the consent of the governed, you need to scrap this government take-over plan and embrace more of our commonsense solutions that protect the vital patient/doctor relationship and decrease the costs of premiums without adding to the national debt.”
Cantor made the same point today, albeit sans guido flavor. Kudos to Broun for his shameless genius in choosing a metaphor that guaranteed every hack in the Beltway corridor (starting with yours truly) would be writing about his boilerplate press release tonight. Coming soon: Biden ruins the GOP’s attempt to obstruct reconciliation by summarily ruling their amendments out of order and then taunts McCain with, “That’s one shot, kid!”
Ah, who are we kidding? Even Slate knows this show’s getting canceled in the House. Estimated date that it’ll be placed on permanent hiatus: March 20.
Update: You’re in good hands, liberals.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi held an unexpected press conference today, where she acknowledged–unsurprisingly–that the divide between Democrats and Republicans on health care reform is unlikely to be bridged. But, when asked if and how she can cobble together the votes within her own caucus to pass a bill with controversial abortion and immigration language in it, Pelosi had no answers.
Update: I feel like that kid who got knocked out by Ronnie.
The president will outline the plan to pass the bill, including having the House of Representatives pass the Democratic Senate health care reform legislation as well as a second bill containing various “fixes.”
He will say that if Republicans refuse to allow and up or down vote in the Senate on the fixes to the bill, Democrats will use the reconciliation rules.
He will argue these rules are perfectly appropriate because the procedure is not being used for the whole bill, just for some fixes; because reconciliation rules are traditionally used for deficit reduction and health care reform will reduce the deficit; and because the reconciliation process has been used many times by Republicans for larger legislation such as the tax cuts pushed by President George W. Bush.

And if Nancy has trouble with her caucus, she can blame Rangel in part for diving it ofver his ethics violation. Dems are coming out to say he should resign his committee chairmanships.
If she can’t stop that, she has less clout in other areas. They know they are likely to lose the House in the fall, so she won’t be in charge come January if Hoyer mounts a coup.
She’s almost a lame duck.

We could scale back Medicaid to the point where it is a privately administered program at one-tenth the cost offering only catastrophic and wellness coverage to the real poor on a budget that they can’t go over. Then do all the things on the GOP playbook verbatim and we’d have achieved real reform in the health care system i.e. lower costs for the empowered American consumer.

All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state. The keystone of the Fascist doctrine is its conception of the State, of its essence, its functions, and its aims. For Fascism the State is absolute, individuals and groups relative.

Couple of things: Each state now controls it’s own insurance laws, including which insurance co’s are licensed to practice in each state. Some states let a lot of co’s in, some few. AS for health insurance, each state determines what types of policies can be sold, what must be covered, etc. For ex. here in NY, all plans must be cadillacs, and there are few ins. co’s offering health ins. So everybody is covered for everything from pregnancy to sex changes. Such plans cost a fortune! Other states have less inclusive options for people who want less and want to pay less–like me. If I could buy a policy from a state that allows plans w/ fewer options, I could save money on premiums. My ideal play would be catastrophic only–I’d pay all my day-to-day bills by myself.

If under Bush with the economy hoping and 5% unemployment, the fifty trillion total of then current and future debt obligations was unmanageable, we couldn’t pay that much debt off in the best of times, how does 110 trillion of total current and future obligations (before adding corruptOcare) during the worst of times, 17% unemployment under Obama square a damn bit better?

From what I understand, each state sets up their own requirements for what must be covered by health care in their states. Then they contract with insurance companies(regardless of where they are headquartered) as to the cost the insurance companies must charge for that coverage. Some states are so stringent that very few insurance companies find it profitable to write policies in the state. If insurance companies could write policies across state lines they could presumably adjust rates because there would be a bigger pool of insured giving them more flexibility.

If they rammed this down our throats, we need a march on Washington April 15th, July 4th, September 12th, and Nov 4th. We need marches on every state capital in the country. The people need to get the attention of these folks somehow before its too late. We need to demand the repeal of this legislation for the sake of future generations. We are bankrupt already and Obamacare will accelerate the demise! On top of this, they’ll ram through amnesty and cap and trade. They are adamant about their agenda, seeing the writing on the wall.
We need to let them know that this election will be titanic like one that has never been seen before for any member who voted for this bill. I say the Dems lose 100 seats in the House and the lose the Senate if they ram this thing through with no measurable improvement in the economy.

I looked into a catastrophic health insurance policy with a $5K deductible for my 25 year old son and premium was $16.40 a month. I heard Gov. Daniels say today that when they first offered Health Savings Accounts to state government employees they have 7% participation and now have over 70%. That’s very impressive.

In contrast to NY, Georgia seems to have a ton of options with everything from high deductible catastrophic benefits to full coverage. The only sticking point appears to be “pre-existing conditions”.

conventional wisdom in the swampland media is that failing to push through with reconciliation and git r done means leadership and failing to do it would mean the Dems cannot govern, that is how I think the Dem leadership is selling this to reluctant House critters..
we should stress to our Critters when we call them that if they DO ram this down, it is PROOF POSITIVE that Democrats cannot be trusted with a simple majority, they will have PROVEN they will disregard the will of the people when given a majority and it will ensure they are never given a majority again for GENERATIONS
No Dem will get my vote after this but Hill if they proceed with this madness
Judd Gregg just told Larry Kudlow the House members who believe they can pass the Senate bill which will then be law, then reconcile a fixed reconciliated Senate bill are rolling the dice (racist! cry all those who claimed Big Dawg was racist when he used this phrase, cough, cough MSNBC) since the GOP will do all they can to stop it

I grew up in Queens Village up on 211th and Hillside Ave. Dad was a bus driver, etc.
Last year, I had a premonition that NYC wasn’t going to be standing much longer. Although I took my son and Mom to NYC in Feb 2002 after the attack, he was young. He wanted to see it as an older male so I took him in April of last year. It is not the same place I grew up in. Nobody speaks the same language. People are in such a hurry; i-pods, no eye contact, no interaction.. Just rush-rush-rush.
When I lived there, me and my g’friends could catch a cab from Queens to Manhattan, spend the day and get back home. Back then, they spoke English. They were older guys who were protective of their “cargo”.
I will always love NYC, but what I saw, I will never go back to willingly. My son is hungry for the big city life so, we’ll see where that takes him. My only job is to make sure that his life will be secured in freedom, that he can find a job suited to his talents, and that he can prosper using his God given gifts.
Right now, I’m not that certain. But I know in my heart and soul that We will rise to this occasion and we will be better for it. I”m glad McCain didn’t get elected (although I voted for him) because otherwise, we never would have known about all those worms underneath our carpets that were chewing at our freedom and… almost.. took it.
Good luck to you, Obama. Feign illness and step down before you are taken down by the electorate of the greatest Country that has ever existed on this Planet.
/rant. off.

This isn’t about health care, but you all know that. What some may not fully recognize is that with unemployment raging and boomers retiring, federal revenues are going over the cliff while spending is through the roof. And with foreign countries distancing themselves from our debt, the liberals know spendapalooza is coming to an end if they can’t figure something out. I think their pushing this as hard as they are because it will give them an immediate abilty to get their hands on new money. They know our social welfare state is in trouble and they are desperate to preserve it. So, in the end, it’s completely about maintenance and growth of liberal power.

Okay jumping in on the preex issue as a medical claims examiner of 20+ years,
firstly let us all keep in mind that the Kennedy Kassenbaum act HIPPA allows credit for those who move from one group plan to another as long as their drop in coverage doesnt exceed a certain window, generally 60 days..
folks who have chronic conditions are used to picking up medicaid or a high deductible catastrophic individual plan to cover any lapse over 60 days, I do it as matter of course, maybe there are millions of people who dont get how insurance works, like Obama with his failure to get COLLISION COVERAGE! OY!
Anywho, this ability to carry over coverage, or get medicaid for the gap in coverage so there is NO gap beyond that allowable 60 day window, this was the Portability part that made it doable for millions of Americans who have preex
the unemployed can go onto Medicaid for that uninsured window, medicaid counts as continuation coverage and you arent preexed at your next group plan
the talking heads have blown it waaay out of proportion
what is needed the fix for the individual market and high risk pools adding a way for people to find coverage

As health-care negotiations inched along at the end of last year, Emanuel grew impatient about addressing national joblessness concerns. One Democratic senator who wanted to pivot to unemployment said Emanuel shared his thinking. ” ‘I understand, I understand. We have to get to jobs,’ ” the senator, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations, recalled Emanuel commiserating. In a meeting with the president and chief of staff, the senator stated his case, but Obama decided the priority was seeing health-care reform through

It’s not like this is the only industry that’s regulated at the state level but it apparently is the only one where you are prohibited from purchasing on the interstate market. Can anyone explain why that is?

Thank you for the simple explanation on health insurance portability. It is extremely troubling that so many people in positions of power (Obama) are so dreadfully misinformed.

Hah. If only they were as aggressive with muslim terrorists.
Their epic downfall will be the stuff of legend. We’ll be telling people in our familes 2 generations from now about this.

Yep. And after some a-hole gets him, Biden waltzes into office.
Way to go Barry-O. Puts gasoline on a housefire.
Idiot.

I wake up every morning grimly wondering what new form my government’s contempt for us all will take, what new strategies my government is conceiving and deploying to further disempower me and darken my life in the name of control and power. It’s an astonishing and depressing feeling. I can’t be alone. How many other Americans are feeling this too?

What the country NEEDS now is John Brown and the federal armory at Harper’s Ferry.
This power grab could light the fire of a riot somewhere.
LA riots over again.
What a complete selfish thug we have as a POTUS.

This bill reminds me of a big excrement sandwich that the president is making for America to eat. But in the spirit of bipartisanship, he is letting the Republicans throw in a couple of their condiments. I hope that good people come together to defeat this Government power grab.

rrpjr: Lots. Some of us were talking this afternoon about our new country, in which we recognize the government as our enemy. It is quite a change.

A lot more than yesterday and the day before and the day before that.

This will be a governmental coup.
Our rule of law has just been replaced by a Soviet style dictatorship.
What can we do about it?
