Open thread: US vs Canada for hockey gold; Update: Canada wins in OT

posted at 2:00 pm on February 28, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The US hasn’t won Olympic hockey gold since the Miracle on Ice in 1980.  Canada last won the gold in 2002 — by defeating the United States in the final.  Canada has lost once in the Olympics, to this same US squad, while the Americans have gone undefeated.  This may well be the most dramatic competitive moment in the games, at least for television viewers.  Who will win — the commanding Americans or the Olympic hosts?

When Team Canada faltered in the first round of the Olympic hockey tournament, the nation that prides itself on having invented the game held its collective breath. Not to worry: a romp over Germany and a rout of Russia put this star-laden team back on track.

Or did it?

Canada barely hung on to defeat fast-closing Slovakia in the semifinals and secure its place in Sunday’s gold medal game at Canada Hockey Place. Adversity could bring the Canadians closer — or exhaust them.

The U.S. has run the table, relying on perseverance to subdue the stubborn Swiss in the quarterfinals and using physicality and speed to embarrass Finland in a 6-1 blowout. They have no gamebreakers — the closest to that is Hawks winger Patrick Kane — but their teamwork and energy have fueled their success.

I’m putting my money (figuratively speaking) on the US, but I’m glad that my favorite two teams made it into the finals.  The game starts at 3:15 ET and will get televised live.  USA! USA!

Update: Team USA scored a goal in the final 24 seconds to send it into OT, but Team Canada won in sudden death, 3-2.  Congratulations to our cousins north of the border — it was a classic Gold Medal finish.

I want to see the USA win this. I am definitely cheering them on!

cubachi on February 28, 2010 at 2:06 PM

Um, why would this be another miracle, there pros against our pros. The 1980 “miracle” was our amateurs against the USSR’s stacked, world class, premiere team. USA was the big time underdog, not so today.

exdeadhead on February 28, 2010 at 2:07 PM

Boy, should have proofed that one.

exdeadhead on February 28, 2010 at 2:07 PM

Canadians are getting insufferable with all their golds. GO USA!!!!!

As a Wing fan, wouldn’t it be great if Rafalski messes up pretty boy Crosby? Bettman would cry.

dIb on February 28, 2010 at 2:09 PM

Think of it this way: It’s the team from Harper’s conservative government vs. the team from Obama’s socialist banana republic.

No matter who wins, there will be some definitely awkward moments……WHEN THEY ALL GO BACK TO PLAYING FOR THE NHL!

No matter what, this doesn’t rise to the symbolic power of the US v. USSR miracle of 1980.

No comparison to the “Miracle.” Russian pros versus our college guys, classic David and Goliath type mythos. Now it’s our NHLers vs. their NHLers.

Will be exciting to watch though.

Death to Canada!

Okay maybe not. Still I hope the U.S. kicks some serious butt and takes home the gold.

Right-brained on February 28, 2010 at 2:18 PM

In the name of all that is good and kind, let NO ONE ask Obama to make a pick. The man is a human jinx, and I want the USA to win!!!!!!!!!!!!

varnson on February 28, 2010 at 2:18 PM

The US has to score first. Get the crowd out of the game and put the Canadians on their heels. If they can get the Canadians to press they just might pull this off.

Look for Chris Drury to have a big game.

I wish it would get started, this cross country ski event is about as exciting as watching grass grow.

conservnut on February 28, 2010 at 2:30 PM

Not that this has much to do with this game or it’s possible outcome.

Why on earth is the Olympic Hockey tournament being played on an NHL size rink as opposed to an OLYMPIC sized rink?

Jim708 on February 28, 2010 at 2:33 PM

Goal tending will probably be the difference. Canada will likely get more scoring chances, but Miller can win it if Luongo lets in a few.

Heatly and the San Jose line have looked great, and Crosby always plays well in big games contrary to the belief of some poorly informed hockey fans. Should be great.

jpmn on February 28, 2010 at 2:30 PM

Since they’re playing at GM Place (home of the Canucks) they decided not to spend the 10 million to change the ice size. Seems fair to me.

There are plenty of other rule differences that keep the sport different from NHL play.

thebrokenchair on February 28, 2010 at 2:39 PM

As a hockey lover I can’t wait for this game. USA! USA! USA!
Too bad it’s on NBC. They have made a complete clusterfark of the entire Olympic broadcast production and have especially treated hockey as an afterthought. NBC really, really sucks.

You guys are going to have to pardon my ignorance (I know, you always do) during this game. As a resident of the southern United States I am not a big hockey fan and know next to nothing about the sport.

So, when is the kickoff?

conservnut on February 28, 2010 at 2:44 PM

1980 was one of the greatest moments and biggest upsets in sports history; a stunner of epic proportions.

These are pros going against each other. Nice, but not 1980 by a country mile.

In any case….GO USA!

rickyricardo on February 28, 2010 at 2:45 PM

Will Obama lecture us on healthcare again before the game?

Wade on February 28, 2010 at 2:46 PM

The Olympic/NHL rules are different I agree but playing on a bigger surface (Part of the rule differences) puts much more emphasis on skating and passing rather than the physical part of hockey. Imagine playing the Superbowl on an Arena Football field.

jpmn on February 28, 2010 at 2:46 PM

thebrokenchair on February 28, 2010 at 2:39 PM

The only two differences I’ve noticed this year are the “no touch” icing (good rule) and no fighting (not so good rule). The rest seems to be the same including the automatic 2:00 for putting a puck over the glass from your own end, and the faceoffs coming back to the perpetrators end in the case of a penalty. Are there any other rules differences I’m missing?
