Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on February 26, 2010 by Allahpundit

“Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa at the the London School of Economics and Political Science correlated data on these behaviors with IQ from a large national U.S. sample and found that, on average, people who identified as liberal and atheist had higher IQs. This applied also to sexual exclusivity in men, but not in women. The findings will be published in the March 2010 issue of Social Psychology Quarterly…

“‘The adoption of some evolutionarily novel ideas makes some sense in terms of moving the species forward,’ said George Washington University leadership professor James Bailey, who was not involved in the study. ‘It also makes perfect sense that more intelligent people — people with, sort of, more intellectual firepower — are likely to be the ones to do that.’

“Bailey also said that these preferences may stem from a desire to show superiority or elitism, which also has to do with IQ. In fact, aligning oneself with ‘unconventional’ philosophies such as liberalism or atheism may be ‘ways to communicate to everyone that you’re pretty smart,’ he said…

“Religion, the current theory goes, did not help people survive or reproduce necessarily, but goes along the lines of helping people to be paranoid, Kanazawa said. Assuming that, for example, a noise in the distance is a signal of a threat helped early humans to prepare in case of danger.”

***
“The jury may be out on whether conservatives are less intelligent than liberals, but there’s evidence that they may be physically stronger. Last year, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences published a fascinating paper by Aaron Sell, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides of the Center for Evolutionary Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The authors measured the strength of 343 students using weight-lifting machines at a gym. The students also completed questionnaires designed to measure, among other things, their proneness to anger, their history of fighting and their fondness for aggression as a way to solve both individual and geopolitical problems.

“Sell, Tooby and Cosmides found that men (but not women) with the most physical strength were also the most likely to feel entitled to good treatment, anger easily, view themselves as successful in winning conflicts and believe in physical force as a tool for resolving interpersonal and international conflicts. Women who thought of themselves as pretty showed the same pattern of greater aggression. All of which means that if you are a liberal who believes you’re smarter than conservatives, you probably shouldn’t bring that up around them. You might not like them when they’re angry.”

I don’t like to argue in circles and I have seen entire threads destroyed by TerryAnn.

HornetSting on February 27, 2010 at 12:30 AM

Yes. Which is why I said this: Moreover, in the process, you are marginalizing yourself. Which is a pity, in my opinion, because I think you have more to offer then being a broken record. I don’t want to think of HornetSting as the commentor that always posts on TA. You turn one wasted post that way into two wasted posts.

Now, we have taken up enough of this thread with your coat over the water puddle.

HornetSting on February 27, 2010 at 12:40 AM

I would be interested in a study that looked at which side of the spectrum were better with money – that is control of their finances and debt, etc. It should be across all incomes.

How about a study that looks at which side has a better family life.

How about a study that looks at which side are more honest.

Johnny 100 Pesos on February 27, 2010 at 12:40 AM

HornetSting on February 27, 2010 at 12:40 AM

If you want to move from the principle to my motivation, I’m happy to oblige.

I care because it’s a community. TA has had some worthy things to contribute over the years. For example, there is one particular topic, immigration, where she and I don’t agree but discussing it with her did help me understand the mindset I needed to be able to communicate to. I don’t try to talk to her about Beck or Palin, but she is a solid contributor in other areas. And moreover, which maybe an artificial value I place, she’s a long-standing veteran here from the days when AP would come down and chat with us. So I philosophically disapprove of trying to badger her into not posting comments.

In the grand scheme of things, IQ means absolutely nothing. It is perhaps the most worthless measure of a person’s intelligence.

It is how one thinks that is important and that is where Conservatives have the lead.

“Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa at the the London School of Economics and Political Science correlated data on these behaviors with IQ from a large national U.S. sample and found that, on average, people who identified as liberal and atheist had higher IQ.

“Religion, the current theory goes, did not help people survive or reproduce necessarily, but goes along the lines of helping people to be paranoid, Kanazawa said.

This is without doubt the most transparent ranting of pretentious, elitist, gasbags I have ever read.
So the conclusion of these intellectual liberals is that they are smarter than everyone else. Why am I not surprized.

And here Joe Klien proudly proclames that he doesn’t even have to have seen the Health Care Summit to know exactly how it turned out. Who was brilliant (guess) and who was stupid and obstructionist.”Reading between the lines, you can conclude that the Republicans had nothing very interesting, or clever, to say (and were never able to get the President’s goat)”

Both sides are brimming with stupidity. Conservative ideologues want to promote elimination of entitlements instead of reforming them. Libs lack basic math skills in figuring out that all the free stuff they want costs a hell of a lot of money that we simply do not have, and that our current debt path is not sustainable.

Southernblogger on February 27, 2010 at 12:54 AM

Don’t be dense – it’s unattractive. The reason to end entitlements is to end the bureaucracy. Otherwise, reform is just a synonym for window dressing. Once entitlements are ended, decent needs-based safety nets can be put in place.

BJ Clinton knows this script since he was forced to go along with welfare reform in 1996.

Elimination at the federal level. States are where any entitlements should be, not least of which because states cannot create money and cannot bankrupt the nation with expenditures that can rise as high as one would allow. There is no limit to how much one can spend on entitlements, if one so chooses. States can be generous, to attract people, but they have to live within their means or suffer, without taking the whole nation down.

Yes, she is not like the others you have mentioned. As she herself has acknowledged, she does tend to have a knee-jerk reaction which, again, she is working on. She’s a commentor who is growing into her political ideology and she works on it outloud in the comments sometimes. No biggie.

When I say ‘no biggie’ I mean it does not bother me if TA expresses her opinion in a comment thread, because I think she will come to a more full conservative position by expressing opinions about things and getting responses.

Very rarely does a man or a woman acknowledge (or even be aware) of an opinion change in one day based on another person’s opinion. Sometimes thoughts have to marinate.

If you say “Lets cut fraud, waste and make these programs work efficiently”, then you have a winning platform. People want solutions, not slogans and half-assed rhetoric.

Well of course, you realize, this means your IQ is sub standard./s

And, I would never sting a platypus.

HornetSting on February 27, 2010 at 1:05 AM
That’s a relief. Don’t hurt him too bad, though. I know if you wanted, you could make him wish he’d chosen Gitmo.

platypus on February 27, 2010 at 1:10 AM

This place has turned into a liberal commune. Everyone pouring out their feelings and protecting each other.
I hope 1776 feels all warm and fuzzy in his defense of someone that causes a dogpile every time she comes around and posts her ‘common sense’.
ANd, I hope terryann learns to fight her own battles soon.

HornetSting on February 27, 2010 at 1:14 AM

Can you clarify the 2nd part? the school stuff.

Spirit of 1776 on February 27, 2010 at 1:14 AM

It’s a slang.

MeatHeadinCA on February 27, 2010 at 1:15 AM

Sigh… I admit it. I’m stupid. Really. So… I don’t know. I’m trying to get outraged over this, but somehow it’s not surprising

MeatHeadinCA on February 27, 2010 at 1:11 AM

It really comes down to two things: whether “intelligence” correlates with correct opinions and whether “unconventional” beliefs are correct and advance society in and of themselves.

darii on February 27, 2010 at 1:15 AM

One comment and you lose your flippin’ MIND!

Ah, so are you saying this is not a pattern of behavior?

That’s constupider

MeatHeadinCA on February 27, 2010 at 1:11 AM

LOL. That’s catchy. I’d crack up if the lefties scanning this site didn’t pick that up and start running with it. I mean, they just spent all that effort to come up with “Coffee Party” (ROFLMOA) … “constupider” would be a big step up for them.

Dude. That makes a lot of sense. Wow. My puny conservative mind can’t handle all this… oh no, whenever I learn something, I lose something.

Folks, (not to sound like BOR), but I’ve seen this place descend into the best whiskey, sexual position….
I’d rather be talking about ‘best trip to the dentist’ than this bullsh*t. But……

HornetSting on February 27, 2010 at 1:16 AM

Thanks, platypus. That’s very kind of you.

neurosculptor on February 27, 2010 at 1:08 AM

I’d say it’s a no-brainer but we already have one in the WH so it’s not funny to say that any longer.

Now this is very smart, and I believe is what Reagan was pushing ffor.

Southernblogger on February 27, 2010 at 1:17 AM

I come from a family of engineers and scientists with advanced degrees, each one conservative, each one Christian. The stupidest people I know (I’m in the music business) are liberals.

As for atheists, my feeling is that most of the time, they aren’t as smart as they are arrogant. (Speaking of arrogant, obnoxious atheists, Michael Newdow was invited to the White House today.)

Anecdotal, but there it is. Makes you wonder who conducted this study. I’ll just take a guess: liberal atheists.

Sometimes we just have to set the rules. Perhaps if we started referring to ourselves as evil geniuses we’d get our intelligence back (we’ll always be stuck with evil)

Spirit of 1776 on February 27, 2010 at 1:15 AM

Sure it is…if someone posts something coughed of limited intellect, there’s a dogpile. That’s the way it goes around here. Come around some night when a drug legalization thread comes up and I’ll show you an attack.

HornetSting on February 27, 2010 at 1:18 AM

People want solutions, not slogans and half-assed rhetoric.

Southernblogger on February 27, 2010 at 1:14 AM

The difference between actual policy and guiding principles. Nothing wrong with wanting to dismantle entitlements, but you can’t get there in one step. Electing ppl who will reform and pair down these things is a step in the right direction indeed.

OK, here’s something to ponder

The trolls must be pretty smart because they realize if they came on this post, they’d definitely disprove this IQ claim.

MeatHeadinCA on February 27, 2010 at 1:23 AM

More brilliant minds at work!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_university_cuts_protest

UC Berkeley students don’t like tuition hikes, so they fight back! By breaking windows, spraying graffiti, and destroying campus property which they’ll probably pay for through more tuition hikes. Brilliant I say!

El_Terrible on February 27, 2010 at 1:23 AM

Come around some night when a drug legalization thread comes up and I’ll show you an attack.

I have no qualms about anyone attack anyone else’s ideas. What I am suggesting to you is that you marginalize your own value as a contributor when you focus on the person, not the ideas. Having said that, you have a cheering section, so perhaps some people are entertained by that, so it maybe be personally valuable. I don’t believe, however, it will ever change TA’s position if you harass her personally. And as such, I don’t think it helps you get the party where you want it to go. You say that she’s not conservative, I’ve been here from the first, she does have some strongly held conservative values – I would like to see them spread consistently through the rest of her views. So I want to see her work through them.

Spirit of 1776 on February 27, 2010 at 1:24 AM

I can’t help it but since reading the last few pages, a phrase keeps popping into my head….

Snotty, condescending, egotistical Prick…

Strange…..
