Obama appoints SEIU boss to Deficit Commission
posted at 12:15 pm on February 26, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Perhaps Barack Obama picked Andy Stern for his bipartisan commission on the federal deficit just to get Stern out of the White House. After all, Obama may be getting tired of Stern’s weekly visits, but that hardly qualifies the SEIU chief to sit on a panel to make hard choices on federal budgeting. And with Stern on the panel, we can already guess how many job-cutting initiatives this panel will produce:
Honeywell International Inc. Chief Executive Officer David Cote and former Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Alice Rivlin were named by President Barack Obama today to serve on a commission on cutting the federal deficit.
The president also appointed Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, and former Young & Rubicam Brands CEO Ann Fudge for the panel, to serve on the panel. …
Obama last week named former Democratic White House official Erskine Bowles and former Wyoming Republican Senator Alan Simpson as co-chairmen of the commission. The White House appointees will be joined by 12 other panel members chosen by Democratic and Republican leaders in the House and Senate.
The 18-member National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility was created by Obama to come up with recommendations for steps to reduce the federal deficit, which is forecast to hit a record $1.6 trillion this year. The budget shortfall may be an issue in November elections that will determine control of Congress.
Alice Rivlin is also a big donor to Democrats. In the present and previous cycle, the Brookings Institute economist donated over $47,000 to various Democrats. For that matter, so is Ann Fudge, who gave over $36,000. In contrast, Stern gave less than $6,000. (Cote only made one donation to a partisan recipient, a Republican, for $1000.) Is this change we can believe in?
But the larger problem is that Stern represents the problem that Congress faces in making tough budget decisions — not the solution. He has a vested interest in keeping federal employees on the job, as his union mainly represents public-sector workers. If this budget commission recommended cuts to staff, his union will lose dues — which will reduce the amount of funds available for his union to donate to Democrats. Public-sector unions gave 89% of their donations to Democrats in 2008, and so far in this cycle, 91%.
This “bipartisan” commission looks pretty stacked to me, in favor of maintaining the status quo for public-sector growth and the flow of cash to Democratic coffers. We can expect that this panel will recommend tax hikes in order to maintain that cash flow and to subsidize Democratic power.
Update: Rob Port connects the dots to Obama’s efforts to force government contractors into unionization.
Update II: CentristNet wonders whether marrying himself so closely to an increasingly unpopular labor movement will damage Obama even further with voters. (Geoff tipped me to the story, and I forgot to hat-tip him on this one. Sorry!)

This gives the fraud someone else to blame when he announces across the board tax hikes – not to mention the creation of news taxes. “I didn’t want to do it….But,…But,…MY independent deficit control panel, made up of the biggest donor…..I mean, brightest economic minds in the world, said we have to raise elventy-leven trillion immediately or we’ll go bankrupt! And then he’ll blame George W. Bush.

The Government creates laws, lots of laws, to protect workers from their greedy employers that wish only to exploit them and often fail to provide them a with safe workplace.
With that in mind can anyone explain to me why government workers would need a union?
Isn’t the fact that most unionized workers are government employees an admission that the government cannot be trusted?
Hey, I’m just askin’.

If conservatives made a list of cuts to shrink government, you would go ballistic. Here’s an example of what we could cut immediately that I doubt you would accept:

Close the EPA.
Rescind the law requiring hospitals to treat illegal aliens without charge.

The Labor Movement on the global economies has the world stage at the White House. Outside of Obama, his administration is not even trying to hide that fact. Obama is an ccomplished liar and master at deception for those who can’t comprehend the reality of what is happening. This is truly the Civil War for global control. First the EU collapses and the next target is already in place. Every action he takes only reinforces that direction.

EPA is fine. They do a good job, mostly. The Dept. of Education addresses a legitimate issue that’s coming up. What goes on in Indiana is now national news. I watch stories frequently these days over local school decisions on national TV. People obviously want conformity of values.
It’s intersting. What some school districts think is OK is appalling to people from other areas.
Handcuff 3rd graders? Spy on kids via their webcam from the school-issued puter?
Privatize SS? Oh please, I’ve never thought that was smart. Still don’t.

Only in Washington DC does it take 18 people, including legislators and union
thugsbosses, to come up with ideas on how to curtail deficit spending.First order of business: create a task force to research all available options and then give a no-bid consulting contract to a relatives firm to submit long-winded reports that end up suggesting to raise taxes on everyone (for the nominal fee of $500k).
Meeting adjourned, for three months because getting 18 busy individual executives/politicians in the same room is nearly impossible unless they are paid to be there or TV cameras will be present.
Reconvene and take consulting firms proposal and get the congressional printing office to reprint it 700 times with embossed lettering hardcovers and distribute them to the media, and uh, the President I guess.
President humbly says “Listen, the only way to cut the deficit by 20% over 15 years is to raise capital gains and income taxes on everyone who produces jobs in this country. Turn to the right. Doing so will thus create more jobs as people find new ways to make money without hitting 55% top marginal tax rates and still manage to pay for their government health insurance mandated coverage bills.”
Problem solved!

This budget commission is a farce in the first place. The Senate rejected this commission because THIS RESPONSIBILITY falls on the House and the Senate. While the commission’s “recommendations” are binding or not, President Obama spit in the face of the legislative process, further turning his back on the constitutional seperation of powers. In Honduras this would be grounds for expulsion. It’s no wonder Obama refused to recognize the decisions of the Honduran Supreme Court or the peoples justification for exiling Zelaya.
Packing this commission with cronies like Andy Stern further underminds the public trust in our government with labor unions calling the shots on our economy—especially when they’ve played a strong part of the problem.
This move shows the level of desperation of a one term less than mediocre president.

The very creation of this farcical commission demonstrates how adept our elected representatives are at shaking off responsibility to exercise control and restraint on federal government spending. The continual chant by these nominal leaders of, “The problem’s too big, there’s nothing we can do about it”, testifies to how unsuited they are to be in their elected positions.
Take the health care debate, for example, where these folks wail on and on about how spending on health care is breaking the federal budget. Rather than question why such spending is subsidized by the federal government and isn’t rightfully done away with altogether, their solutions seek ways to take on more spending in this area. They should be introduced to the idea of “core competency” so they can begin to reduce the federal government’s involvement in society only to those areas where it performs competently and in accord with the Constitution.

Putting Andy Stern onto any commission with the word “deficit” in the title might be an unforeseen strategem: having the other commission members rub elbows with that steaming turd will convince them of the gravity of the problem at very least….
…hmmm…does a turd have elbows? I digress….
Andy Stern and unions, public sector unions especially, are the colonic blockage in the body politic, and the imagery there is intentional.
…OK…enough digestive references…I’ll start doing fart jokes next….
He may be there on a twisted “fox to guard the henhouse” rationale, but it’s probably (trying to be fair to Obama is exhausting and, frankly, disingenuous on my part) doing what he’s shown us is his M.O. from day one: pander to the most reliable supporters of his rapine of the nation and shredding in the national constitution.

Terry wasn’t young. I put his age at the time as 50-ish. And my shock was that he called the USSR as oppressive. That was…ummm…unexpected! LOL
But I learned from that, having been a teenager at the time and quite liberal. I liked the honesty, though I had quandry between by liberalism and the patriotism my dad instilled in me.
Over time, I became a Reaganite and still am to this day.
Looking back on that prof, and comparing modern American liberals to him, the present Left doesn’t even measure up to Marx. Oh, they might perchance mention Marx but in the end have nothing to do with him. Marx is restrictive, which the modern Left doesn’t like any more than they like the Bible you and I both know.
I mean, if Marx is so perfect, why did people like Alinsky need to ‘expand’ on him?
Modern libs have nothing at all to do with Marx, realistically. They just covet and nothing more.
That’s all they are, all they do.
